Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a typical two-dimensional (2D) material acclaimed for its layered structure and electronic properties, showcasing promise across various domains such as catalysis, CO2 reduction, and lubrication. In this study, g-C3N4 is synthesized as an oil-based nanoadditive within oleic acid (OA), exhibiting superlow friction coefficient (COF) within steel/steel contacts under high pressure. When dispersed g-C3N4 in OA at a concentration of 0.25 wt %, the COF is reduced from 0.077 to 0.022 compared to the base oil. The amino groups in g-C3N4 promote the formation of continuous friction films, creating a composite tribofilm made of carbon layers, carbon nitride, and iron oxides. This tribofilm effectively prevents direct contact between tribopairs, leading to significant friction reduction and enhanced antiwear properties. These findings offer insights into the design of lubricant additives for base oils and highlight the promising potential of carbon nitride in lubrication and tribology applications.

To realize the synergistic lubrication of micro/nano-cellulose and MXene in base oil. Herein, a micro/nano-cellulose confined MXene/polytetrafluoro-wax (NC-MXene/PFW @PDA) composite was prepared by one-step hydrothermal and in-situ loading methods. It was used as a lubricant additive of PAO based oil and achieved macroscopic super lubrication on the surface of engineering steel. The tribological properties of the NC-MXene/PFW@PDA lubricant on the surface of engineering steel were tested at various contents, different loads and sliding speeds. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate on the steel surface are reduced by 666.7% and 89.4% respectively compared with pure PAO lubricant. Finally, the synergistic lubrication mechanism was proposed by characterizing the wear surface and performing lubrication theoretical calculations.

Achieving superlubrication on engineered steel surfaces is critical to reduce friction and wear in mechanical engineering. Herein, a lubricant with rapid superlubrication properties is designed by phytic acid (PA) modified black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets (PA-BP) into a mixture of poly (aspartic acid) (PASP) and ethylene glycol (EG) solution (PASP/EG). It is able to achieve a superlubrication state ( µ ≈ 0.0048) at a high contact pressure of 710 MPa on the engineered steel surface and the time to reach superlubrication (tRs) is only 26 s. The addition of PA-BP could reduce wear rate by 96% on the steel surface (1.51×10 −10 mm 3 N −1 m −1 ) compared to the lubrication of PASP/EG. The surface analysis and molecular dynamics simulations show that PA-BP nanosheets are easily adsorbed on the steel surface to form an adsorbent tribofilm. These PA-BP nanosheets occur oxidation during the friction process, which could adsorb water molecules in PASP/EG to form a water layer with a thickness of 18 Å. This leads to the transformation of the shear interface into water layer with low shear strength, thus achieving the rapid superlubrication at high contact pressure. This work provides a new idea for the design of rapid macroscopic superlubrication on engineered steel surfaces for industrial applications.

Ambient environment has a crucial effect on the lubrication performance of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coatings. In this work, we fabricated porous MoS2 coatings via a facile optimized aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method. It is found that the obtained MoS2 coating demonstrates outstanding antifriction and antiwear lubrication performance with the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate as low as 0.035 and 3.4 × 10–7 mm3/Nm in lower humidity (15 ± 5)%, respectively, which is comparable to the lubrication ability of pure MoS2 in vacuum. In addition, the hydrophobic property of porous MoS2 coatings is suitable for infusing lubrication oil to achieve stable solid–liquid lubrication in higher humidity (85 ± 2)%. The composite lubrication system shows excellent tribological behavior in both dry and wet environments, which will alleviate the sensitivity of the MoS2 coating to the environment and ensure the service life of the engineering steel in complex industrial backgrounds.
