Two-dimensional (2D) layered group-IV monochalcogenides with large surface-to-volume ratio and high surface activity make that their structural and optoelectronic properties are sensitive to air oxidation. Here, we report the utilization of oxidation-induced gradient doping to modulate electronic structures and optoelectronic properties of 2D group-IV monochalcogenides by using SnS nanoplates grown by physical vapor deposition as a model system. By a precise control of oxidation time and temperature, the structural transition from SnS to SnSO x could be driven by the layer-by-layer oxygen doping and intercalation. The resulting SnSO x with a graded narrowing bandgap exhibits the enhanced optical absorption and photocurrent, leading to the fabricated SnSO x photodetector with remarkable photoresponsivity and fast response speed (<64 μs) at a broadband spectrum range of 520–1550 nm. The peak responsivity (7294 A/W) and detectivity (9.54 × 10 9 Jones) of SnSO x device are at least two orders of magnitude larger than those of SnS photodetector. Moreover, its photodetection performance can be competed with state-of-the-art of 2D materials-based photodetectors. This work suggests that the air oxidation could be utilized as an efficient strategy to engineer the electronic and optical properties of SnS and other 2D group-IV monochalcogenides for the development of high-performance broadband photodetectors.

Rare-earth compounds have been emerging as promising materials for infrared radiative cooling in electronic devices, owing to their exceptional thermal stability, tunable optical properties, and unique phonon-mediated thermal emission within the atmospheric transparency window. This study investigates the infrared (IR) emission behavior of various rare-earth (REPO 4 ) phosphates, focusing on the influence of rare earth ion species, structural characteristics, and temperature effects on their spectral properties. Three distinct morphologies of REPO 4 (RE = Y, Ce, Sm) nanopowders were successfully synthesized via a precipitation method using citric acid as metal ion complexing agent. It is discovered that spherical YPO 4 particles enhance lateral IR scattering and promote IR absorption. Additionally, the IR emissivities of all three samples are significantly influenced by oxygen vacancies and the band gap. Oxygen vacancies increase the free carrier concentration, which enhances IR emissivity, while a reduction in the band gap lowers the energy barrier for electron transitions, facilitating IR absorption. The synergistic effects of these factors yield a remarkable broadband IR emissivity of up to 0.966 for YPO 4 . The composite film created by embedding REPO 4 into PDMS achieved a cooling effect of up to 8.1 °C at an input power of 8 W (power density of 5000 W/m 2 ), demonstrating its effectiveness for cooling electronic devices. These findings indicate the great potential of rare-earth phosphates in advancing sustainable radiative cooling technologies for next-generation electronics.

Developing a precise and reproducible bandgap tuning method that enables tailored design of materials is of crucial importance for optoelectronic devices. Towards this end, we report a sphere diameter engineering (SDE) technique to manipulate the bandgap of two-dimensional (2D) materials. A one-to-one correspondence with an ideal linear working curve is established between the bandgap of MoS 2 and the sphere diameter in a continuous range as large as 360 meV. Fully uniform bandgap tuning of all the as-grown MoS 2 crystals is realized due to the isotropic characteristic of the sphere. More intriguingly, both a decrease and an increase of the bandgap can be achieved by constructing a positive or negative curvature. By fusing individual spheres in the melted state, post-synthesis bandgap adjustment of the supported 2D materials can be realized. This SDE technique, showing good precision, uniformity and reproducibility with high efficiency, may further accelerate the potential applications of 2D materials.

Further minimizing the defect state density in the semiconducting absorber is vital to boost the power conversion efficiency of solar cells approaching Shockley-Queisser limit. However, it lacks a general strategy to control the precursor chemistry for defects density reduction in the family of iodine based perovskite. Here the alkaline environment in precursor solution is carefully investigated as an effective parameter to suppress the incident iodine and affects the crystallization kinetics during film fabrication, via rationale adjustment of the alkalinity of additives. Especially, a ‘residual free’ weak alkaline is proposed not only to shrink the bandgap of the absorber by modulating the stoichiometry of organic cation, but also to improve the open circuit voltage in the resultant device. Consequently, the certified efficiency of 20.87% (Newport) is achieved with one of the smallest voltage deficits of 413 mV in the planar heterojunction perovskite solar cell.
