In this study, an antifouling poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow-fiber membrane was fabricated by blending with silver-loaded graphene oxide via phase inversion through a dry-jet, wet-spinning technique. The presence of graphene oxide endowed the blended membrane with a high antifouling ability for organic fouling. The permeation fluxes of the blended membrane was 3.3 and 2.9 times higher than those of a pristine PVDF membrane for filtering feed water containing protein and normal organic matter, respectively. On the other hand, the presence of silver improved the antibiofouling capability of the blended membrane. For the treatment of Escherichia coli suspension, the permeation flux of the blended membranes was 8.2 times as high as that of the pristine PVDF membrane. Additionally, the presented blended membrane improved the hydrophilicity and mechanical strength compared to those of the pristine PVDF membrane, with the water contact angle decreasing from 86.1 to 62.5° and the tensile strength increasing from 1.94 to 2.13 MPa. This study opens an avenue for the fabrication of membranes with high permeabilities and antifouling abilities through the blending of graphene-based materials for water treatment. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fiber spinning methods determine the formation of the physical structures of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers which further affect stabilization reactions and the mechanical performances of the resultant carbon fibers. In this study, PAN fibers were prepared by both dry-jet gel spinning (g-PAN) and dry-jet wet spinning (w-PAN), and their stabilization behaviors were compared. While the stabilized w-PAN fibers show sheath-core structures, the stabilized g-PAN fibers exhibit relatively uniform stabilized structures along the radial direction. Additionally, the stabilization reactions of g-PAN fibers occur faster than that of w-PAN fibers, and the cyclization, oxidation, and crosslinking reaction activation energies of g-PAN fibers are lower than that of w-PAN fibers, respectively. Moreover, the carbon yield of g-PAN is higher than that of w-PAN fibers. We believe that above changes are possibly ascribed to the formation of different PAN sheath structures and oriented chain structures during dry-jet wet spinning and dry-jet gel spinning. It is concluded that gel spinning could significantly reduce the sheath-core difference of PAN fibers and the stabilized fibers as compared with wet spinning, which leads to a faster stabilization and more uniform stabilized structures. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diverse functional alginate fibers have played irreplaceable roles in life science, precision measurement, etc., drawing considerable attention from numerous researchers. However, further application of multifunctional fibers is greatly restricted by the preparation efficiency and the flexibility of equipment. Herein, modified anti-Rayleigh-Plateau-Instability sodium alginate solution filament and homemade piezoelectric ejector have been prepared to develop an efficient dry-jet wet spinning and encapsulating system for preparing functional fibers. This method has two working modes, which can readily realize the fabrication of conventional hollow fibers or fibers wrapping super large bubbles and functionalized fibers encapsulating reagents with on-demand size (ranging from 1 to 100 µm) and interval distance (ranging from several microns to a few centimeters) with excellent flexibility. Furthermore, the fiber size can be facilely tuned by regulating the flow rate and the rolling speed, up to 1 m s −1 , higher than all the wet spinning techniques ever reported. Functional reagents with different sizes and shapes have been encapsulated in fibers to verify the feasibility and practicality of this approach, demonstrating the potential for further applications in drug delivery, even cell encapsulation and culture.

Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is a serious complication of thyroidectomy. Here, the degradable poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) nerve guide conduits (NGCs) with microgroove or smooth inner surface were fabricated using a phase inversion-based dry-jet wet spinning method for RLN regeneration. The morphology and mechanical properties of NGCs were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a universal testing machine, showing that the porous NGC has good mechanical properties and is suitable for implantation. Further, in vitro PC12 cells cultured on the NGCs showed that microgroove conduit (GNGC) exhibited better cell adhesion, proliferation, and cell orientation. Both smooth and microgroove conduit (SNGC and GNGC) were transplanted into Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat models for assessing the repair effect on the 5-mm RLN gap. The results showed that GNGC was superior to SNGC in nerve regeneration and had similar effects to the autograft group in reducing muscle atrophy and restoring target organ function. Therefore, the degradable NGCs combined with groove structure could guide the regeneration of injured RLN, promote the partial functional recovery of target organs and prevent secondary surgical injury. This study contributes to the design and fabrication of nerve guide conduits and the application of tissue engineering in the field of RLN injury repair.

Ag-loaded zeolites were synthesized and embedded into the outer layer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) dual-layer hollow fiber membrane (D) using a dry-jet wet-spinning co-extruding technique. The distribution of the Ag-loaded zeolites in the outer layer was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was found that the D contained only 54% of the amount of Ag-loaded zeolites that were distributed throughout the cross section of PVDF single-layer hollow fiber membrane (S), as calculated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). However, D showed excellent antibacterial efficiency and resistance to bacterial adhesion because of the higher concentration of Ag + in the outer layer of the membrane. The surface morphologies , pure water flux, mean pore size, pore size distribution , and thermal stability of both PVDF membranes were also investigated.

Poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a widely used polymeric biomaterial due to its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradation. Asymmetric PLGA hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) have been extensively used as porous tubular scaffolds for tissue engineering , e.g. for nerve conduits and artificial blood vessels . PLGA HFMs are generally fabricated through a dry-jet wet spinning process, and the porous morphology of PLGA HFMs induced by polymer/solvent/nonsolvent ternary phase inversion plays a key role in their biomedical performance. In this study, PLGA was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the dope fluid, and deionized water with different DMSO contents was used as the bore fluid. The influence of bore fluid composition on the HFM morphology and performance was investigated by measuring phase separation time, porosity, mechanical properties , and in vitro hydrolytic degradation. The results indicated that with increased bore fluid DMSO content, the inner and outer diameters, as well as the wall thickness of the HFMs, decreased significantly; also, the inner surface became more porous and the inner surface pore size and porosity increased. Cross-sectional SEM images showed that the middle layer of the five-layered microstructure gradually changed from large voids to finger-like microvoids when the DMSO content in bore fluid increased from 0% to 60%. Furthermore, the HFMs resulting from higher DMSO content in bore fluid had a lower porosity, a faster degradation rate, a higher Young's modulus , and a lower suture retention strength . More importantly, the in vitro cell culture on the inner surface of PLGA HFMs showed that PC12 cells cultured on HFMs prepared with 60% DMSO bore fluid exhibited better cell adhesion, longer neurite length, and alignment along the HFM longitudinal axis. A ternary phase diagram and the Flory-Huggins theory were applied to analyze HFM morphological formation. The study contributes to understanding of the mechanism of HFM porous morphology formation and should guide potential application of PLGA HFMs as tissue engineering scaffolds.
