Tribological behavior of ZrO2/WS2 coating surfaces with biomimetic shark-skin structure

Xuemu Li,Jianxin Deng,Yang Lu,Liangliang Zhang,Jie Sun,Fengfang Wu

This study demonstrated the dry friction and wear behavior of sol-gel ZrO 2 /WS 2 coatings with biomimetic shark-skin textured surfaces. The effect of added WS 2 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrO 2 coatings was examined and the dry sliding wear and friction behaviors against commercial AISI1045 steel balls were investigated. After adding WS 2 , the micro hardness of ZrO 2 coating decreased by ~39% (from 23.7 GPa to 14.5 GPa), and the average steady state friction coefficient was decreased from ~0.43 to ~ 0.2. When the ZrO 2 /WS 2 coating surface was textured biomimetic shark skin, nearly 66% decrease of the average steady state friction coefficient and 82% decrease of ball wear rate were obtained as compared with the pure ZrO 2 coatings. The possible frictional mechanism of the biomimetic shark-skin structures was discussed.

Investigate on the dry friction tribological behaviors and mechanism of carbon quantum dot/polyimide composites coating

Enzhu Hu,Enhao Su,Ayush Subedi,Shusheng Liu,Jianping Wang,Hua Zhong,Kunhong Hu

The comprehensive utilization of biomass resources is to be prepared into functional nanomaterial . This paper prepared carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using citric acid . A new CQDs/polyimide composites (CQDs/PI) coating fabricated on the surface of steel disks, has been widely used in bearing sleeve material or coatings in marine equipment parts and aerospace industries. Tribological properties of coating materials were investigated at different loads and reciprocating speeds of 10 mm/s under dry sliding conditions using a UMT-2 tribometer and compared to those of commercial MoS 2 particles in PI composites. Scanning electron microscopy accompanied by energy spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and 3D laser scanning microscopy were used to characterize the morphologies of the abrasion marks to clarify the tribological mechanisms. Results show that different levels of CQDs can improve composite coatings' anti-wear and friction reduction properties. The tribological mechanisms of CQDs were attributed to the enhancement of the hardness of the polyimide coatings by the CQDs and the formation of a transfer film on the surface of the ceramic balls during the friction process reducing the direct contact at the friction sub-interface. 1

Dry tribological properties of textured PMMA composites by embedding microspheres with different thermal conductivities

Dapeng Gu,Hui Xie,Ziyu Liu,Suwen Chen,Zibo Wang,Siyuan Gao

Textured surfaces were prepared by embedding microspheres with different thermal conductivities of brass microspheres (BS), 304 stainless steel microspheres (SS), and polyoxymethylene microspheres (PS) on the surface of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The effects of surface texture and filling modification on the dry tribological properties of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites were studied by ring-on-disc contact. Based on the finite element analysis of friction heat, the wear mechanisms of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites were analyzed. The results show that regular surface texture can be achieved by embedding microspheres on the PMMA surface. The friction coefficient and wear depth of the SS/PMMA composite are both the lowest. The worn surfaces of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites are divided into three micro-wear-regions. The wear mechanisms of different micro-wear-regions are different. Finite element analysis shows that thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient affect the wear mechanisms of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites.

Investigate on preparation and dry tribological behaviors of onion-like carbon/MoS2 polyimide coatings

XingPeng Fei,Shusheng Liu,Ayush Subedi,Xinkai Ding,Enzhu Hu,Kunhong Hu

The development of biomass materials can effectively mitigate the scarcity of energy and minimize resource waste. In this work, onion-like biomass carbon nanoparticles (OLCs) were prepared using rice husk ash (RHA) which was subjected to a high-temperature graphitization reaction catalyzed by iron nitrate. OLCs/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) composite particles were prepared and incorporated into polyimide (PI), and a composite coating of OLCs/MoS 2 /PI with excellent tribological properties was successfully prepared. The tribological properties of coatings were evaluated using a controlled atmosphere tribometer (WMT-2E) under dry friction conditions. The related friction and wear mechanism of PI coatings including particles was clarified by the SEM/EDS, XPS, HRTEM and DFT theory. Results show that the wear rate of the three composite coatings of polyimide with OLC, MoS 2 , and OLC/MoS 2 particles were reduced by 52.9 %, 48.2 %, and 58.1 %, respectively. For the coefficient of friction, PI-0.20 OLC/MoS 2 coating material decreased by 16.1 %. Anti-wear and friction reduction mechanism is attributed to the presence of a transfer film on the surface of the steel balls. The addition of MoS 2 facilitated the deposition of nanoparticles, which further improved the stability and densification of the friction film, resulting in better protection of the metal surface against severe wear. Besides, the component structure changes of OLCs and MoS 2 and adsorption energy of friction products on the surface of tribo-pairs were also important reasons for clarifying the modification tribological behavior of PI coatings including three kinds of nanoparticles.

Influences of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane on the tribological behaviors of basalt fiber/acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber composites under dry friction and water-lubricated conditions

Yingzhe Li,Zhuo Li,Yang Gao,Lin Li,Yihan Yang

The weak interaction between the basalt fiber (BF) and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) weakens the BFs' effects on improving the tribological performances of the NBR composites. To solve this problem, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) was introduced via mixing into the matrix or grafting on the BF surface, respectively. The characteristics, mechanical, and tribological properties of the composites were evaluated, and the effects of the APTES and its introduction methods on the tribological properties were the main focus. The APTES mixed in the rubber matrix decreased the friction coefficient (COF) of the NBR-based composites under both dry friction and water-lubricated conditions. Especially, the APTES hydrolysis under water-lubricated condition was conducive to the formation of the water film and thus dramatically decreased the COF. The COF of the BF0-A3 and the BF12-A3 were 51% and 30% lower than that of the BF0-A0 and the BF12-A0 under water lubrication, respectively. The APTES grafted on the BF surface increased the wear resistance of the BF/NBR composites attributed to the improvement of the interaction between the BFs and the NBR matrix. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
