With the continuous expansion of petroleum exploitation, a large amount of petroleum hydrocarbons has leaked into the Earth’s soil, which seriously threatens ecological health. Hence, a series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of natural attenuation (NA), rice husk (RH), and biochar derived from rice husk (RHBC) in enhancing the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil. When the biodegradation time reached 100 d, the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) biodegradation amounts of NA, RH, and RHBC were 3688.2, 4557.9, and 5913.3 mg/kg, which was equal to the biodegradation efficiency of 32.8, 40.6, and 52.6%, respectively. Compared with NA and RH, the biodegradation efficiency ofn-alkanes C11–C15(C11representsn-alkanes with 11 carbons, namelyn-Hendecane) C16–C29, and C30–C40in RHBC increased to 69.7~82.5%, 42.4~81.5%, and 30.2~48.1%, equivalent to 12.2~34.5%, 6.9~31.2%, and 13.5~37.1% more than NA and RH, respectively. Moreover, the half-life of biodegradation in RHBC was shorted to 83.3 d, equal to 49.7 and 67.9% of NA and RH, respectively. Furthermore, the application of RHBC could improve the dehydrogenase activity in soil and promote the growth and reproduction of petroleum-degrading bacteria (PDB), which enhances the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons. This study exhibited that biochar formed from biomass pyrolysis is a potential biostimulator in enhancing the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil by indigenous bacteria.

Water finding, collection and retention are important issues in drylands because of the rareness and high evaporation of water. Efficiently and fully utilizing water for photocatalytic hydrogen production is thus a challenge in desert areas. Inspired by the decent water absorption and retention properties of super absorbent polymers (SAPs), it is a bracing idea to use SAPs for water storage and hydrogen production reactors to enable full use of precious water for light-driven water splitting. Herein, for the first time, we have prepared a self-assembling solid-state hydrogen source (SHS) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In the SHS, Pt/TiO2 and NiB/CdS nanocomposites were used as solar-driven and visible-light driven hydrogen production model catalysts, respectively, integrated with commercial agricultural acrylamide-acrylate copolymerized crosslinked SAP (AAC). It exhibits hydrogen production comparable to that of a typical suspension system, is reusable, and can be more readily recycled than conventional powdery catalysts, because of its monolithic structure. All water molecules in the SHS can be used to produce hydrogen. Accordingly, the SHS developed in this work offers a strategy for integrating SAPs with catalysts that would be practical in water-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in drought regions.

Water scarcity poses a critical global challenge, particularly in arid and off-grid inland regions. Solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) offers a promising solution to freshwater shortages; however, existing systems are hindered by two key limitations: suboptimal material adsorption/desorption performance and inefficient thermal management in device design. To address these challenges, this study presents a hydrogel composite-based SAWH device featuring an optimized thermal insulation structure. The composite sorbent, rGO@Cur-LiCl—synthesized by integrating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with lithium chloride (LiCl) and bio-derived curdlan (Cur)—exhibits exceptional adsorption-desorption kinetics and high water uptake capacities of 1.74 and 3.01 g g −1 at 30 % and 60 % relative humidity (RH), respectively. The designed passive SAWH device incorporates a dual-chamber thermal insulation configuration, a dual-layer acrylic radiative-convective barrier, and a modular adsorbent bed, enabling two full daily cycles. Under one-sun irradiation at 30 °C and 30 % RH, the system achieves a remarkable water yield of 2.33 L m −2 day −1 , outperforming state-of-the-art counterparts by 2–5 times. This work advances a sustainable strategy for decentralized freshwater production in water-scarce regions.

Efficient freshwater production techniques are urgently required to address the global water-scarcity problem. The solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology, which can capture water vapour from ambient air and release it under sunlight, is a sustainable and feasible strategy for obtaining fresh water. The key to achieving high water harvesting lays in the dynamic adsorption properties of the material and the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the device structure. Therefore, this paper reports a core-shell structured material, UiO-66@MIL-101(Cr) (U@M), where the outer layer exhibits excellent water-adsorption characteristics under arid conditions, and the inner layer exhibits high water-adsorption characteristics under high humidity conditions. These inner and outer layer materials are assembled into a core-shell structure while considering the water-harvesting features of both sides, achieving synergistic enhancement of the AWH performance at low relative humidity (RH). Experimental results demonstrate that at 25°C and 30 % RH, the novel core-shell structured material achieves a high water-harvesting capacity of 0.408 g g −1 and excellent stability in 50 operating cycle tests. At the system level, we have developed a solar-driven AWH device based on the synthesised core-shell material. Daytime and night-time experimental tests were conducted in outdoor environments, resulting in a water production rate exceeding 1.336 kg m − ² day − ¹, with the collected water meeting the standards for laboratory-grade pure water. The research findings can be applied to alleviate water issues in arid regions, such as residential water supply, industrial electrolysis for hydrogen production and other fields, showing broad application prospects.
