The brain serves as the central hub for both our physiological and psychological activities, and current research on the human brain mostly relies on electroencephalography (EEG) method. Hence, we have developed a flexible nanozymes/iridium-titanium dioxide (SAN/Ir-TiO
2
) dry electrode for collecting EEG signals. Due to the hygroscopic nature of SAN nanozymes, they facilitate the maintenance of skin moisture balance. Additionally, the combination of iridium nanoparticles with a titanium dioxide nanotube array enables rapid electron transfer, resulting in an average impedance of 14.2 kΩ in the no-hair region and 19.9 kΩ in the hair region for the electrode. Moreover, in experiments involving blinking, clenching teeth, and alpha wave blocking, signal collection correlation between SAN (single atom nanozymes)/Ir-TiO
2
and traditional Ag/AgCl electrodes is 97.1% to 99.5%, and the signal collection correlation between electrodes from the market and traditional Ag/AgCl electrodes is 95.5% to 99.2%. In Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) experiments with a 9-channel cap, stimulation frequencies ranging from 7.5Hz to 14Hz were recorded and subjected to frequency domain analysis. Within the range of 7.5Hz to 14Hz, the signal-to-noise ratio ranged from 7.5 to 14.1db, surpassing the performance in other regions. In an 8-command SSVEP classification experiment, the train accuracy and online accuracy were as high as 92.8% and 92.8% respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of using SAN/Ir-TiO
2
dry electrodes for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology.

The high impedance caused by the lack of interfacial hydrogel in dry electrodes seriously affects the quality of acquired electrophysiological signals. Although there are existing strategies to reduce impedance with micro–nanostructures, achieving stretchable and breathable electrodes while ensuring low impedance is extremely challenging. Herein, we successfully prepared a dry textile electrode (nanomesh film (NF)-ZnO–polypyrrole (PPy)) with low impedance, high stretchability, and breathability. Wrinkle-nanorod coupled microstructures are constructed to increase the effective surface area and roughness of NF-ZnO–PPy electrode, achieving an exponential reduction in impedance compared with the smooth textile dry electrode (15.64 kΩ·cm −2 at 10 Hz, approximately 1/6 of the lowest impedance of reported electrodes). Simultaneously, the wrinkled structure formed by pre-stretching improves electrode’s stretchability (up to 910% strain) and cycle stability (R/R 0 is within 1.08 after 1000 cycles at 30% strain). Furthermore, the NF-ZnO–PPy electrode has excellent breathability (2233.52 g·m −2 ·d −1 ) and good biocompatibility. Finally, as a proof of concept, the 16-channel NF-ZnO–PPy electrode can record electromyography signals in different states and parts of body for a long time ((22.03 ± 0.76) dB, which is twice that of the commercial electrode). Notably, we employ ZnO nanorods as a template to reduce impedance. This template strategy overcomes complex and expensive micro–nanomanufacturing technologies (photolithography, laser processing, etc.) and can be suitable for most flexible substrates, showing great potential in the field of soft electronics. The commonly employed wet and semi-dry electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes require the use of conductive media, resulting in issues such as reduced comfort, detached conductive coatings, and limitations in long-term wearing. In this study, we present a user-friendly dry EEG electrode made from conductive leather for long-term EEG monitoring. The conductive leather was obtained by in-situ synthesis of polypyrrole inside the goat leather, which could be further used as an EEG electrode. When positioned on the forehead, the interface impedance between the leather electrode and human skin complied with the international standard for EEG electrodes. The material's exceptional breathability enabled prolonged electrode wear. These leather electrodes facilitated precise monitoring of eye movement signals and α-wave activities in a relaxed state, laying the groundwork for extending their application to other brain regions. Furthermore, leather electrodes exhibited excellent performance even in the presence of sweat interference, thus confirming their advantages for long-term EEG monitoring. The leather dry electrode featuring superior wearability, portability, and long-term stability is expected to bring significant implications for future wearable technologies and monitoring devices.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a generally adopted method to monitor a person's brain activity. Traditional EEG recording usually uses wet electrodes with lower contact impedance due to conductive gels. Nonetheless, the conductive gel needs pretreated skin, which leads to allergies by long-term use. In this paper, a kind of barb micro-structured (BMS) dry electrode is presented. The coating, electrical, and electrochemical properties of the electrode are studied in detail. The EEG signals of calm and blinking eyes can be collected by placing the BMS dry electrode on the forehead of the human body. Compared to the traditional wet and planar dry electrodes, BMS dry electrodes do not need pretreated skin before use, and they have a stronger anti-hair interference performance. They also record high-quality EEG signals. Further, a mercaptan treatment is used on the surface of the electrode, which effectively improves its corrosion resistance rate (corrosion resistance rate of 26.78%), which is conducive to the long-term use of the electrode, and forms a research basis for the development of the intelligent wearable field.

During dynamic measurements, single-layer fabric biopotential dry electrodes are prone to slip between the electrode and the skin, resulting in more measurement noise. The double-layer structure of the spacer fabric (SF) reduces the relative slip between the bottom of the electrodes and the skin, and obtains better signal quality. In this study, low-slip, corrosion-resistant ECG signal acquisition electrodes based on double-layer SF were developed by silver plating, chlorination and thiol treatment processes. The effects of electrode structure, chlorination time and thiol treatment time on electrode performance were investigated. Compared with the single-layer fabric, the slip at the bottom of the double-layer SF was reduced by 84.6 % at a pressure of 70 cN and a motion displacement of 10 mm. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the electrode after the thiol-etching treatment was 70.8 %, and a stable ECG signal could still be obtained after etching with sodium sulfide solution.

Long-term biopotential monitoring requires high-performance biocompatible wearable dry electrodes. But currently, it is challenging to establish a form-preserving fit with the skin, resulting in high interface impedance and motion artifacts. This research aims to present an innovative solution using an all-green organic dry electrode that eliminates the aforementioned challenges. The dry electrode is prepared by introducing biocompatible maltitol into the chosen conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate). Thanks to the secondary doping and plasticizer effect of maltitol, the dry electrode exhibits good stretchability (62%), strong self-adhesion (0.46 N/cm), high conductivity (102 S/cm), and low Young's modulus (7 MPa). It can always form a conformal contact with the skin even during body movements. Together with good electrical properties, the electrode enables a lower skin contact impedance compared to the current standard Ag/AgCl gel electrode. Consequently, the application of this dry electrode in bioelectrical signal measurement (electromyography, electrocardiography, electroencephalography) and long-term biopotential monitoring was successfully demonstrated.

Current soft surface electrodes have attracted more and more attention owing to their potential applications in the fields of biological signal monitoring, wearable human–machine interface and internet of things. The paper presents that soft dry electrode based on PDMS-CB conductive polymer is designed and fabricated to continuous, long-term, stable electrocardiogram (ECG) signal recordings which is conformal contact with the soft skin surface. The wearable electronic platform based on the soft dry electrode is built up to collect the ECG data. Integration of the soft dry electrodes with wearable electronic platform would improve the wearability and adaptability of the soft electrode in biological healthy monitoring which represents the future application in ubiquitous healthcare. Experiments have demonstrated that ECG data from the soft electrodes are recorded with PQRST wave which are similar to ECG data from Ag/AgCl gel electrodes. Meanwhile, robustness and stability of ECG signal are validated by the soft dry electrodes with different body actions.

Single-mode sensors suffer from poor robustness and insufficient data features in facial expression recognition, so fusing multi-sensor signals is the key to improving the accuracy of expression recognition systems. Here, a biocompatible capacitive-electromyographic dual-mode sensor (CEDS) is presented, consisting of a capacitive pressure sensing unit and dry electrodes for electrophysiological signal monitoring, assembled in a 3D stacking fashion. A double-coupled microstructure is prepared and the electrical double-layer effect is realized by doping ionic liquid, which significantly improves the capacitive performance of the sensor. The application of dry electrodes effectively solves the problems of hydrogel electrodes that are prone to water loss and skin irritation. Besides, the good biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties of CEDS are verified through cytotoxicity and bacteriostatic tests. Based on the sensing of a single signal, a fatigue driving monitoring system and a manipulator control system are constructed respectively. By further integrating the capacitive and electrophysiological signal monitoring functions of CEDS, a 1D convolutional neural network-assisted facial expression recognition system is constructed, which effectively improves the accuracy of expression recognition and demonstrates the great potential of facial expression monitoring systems based on flexible sensor technology in practical applications.

Current soft surface electrodes have attracted more and more attentions owing to their potential applications in biological signal monitoring, human-machine interaction (HMI) and Internet of Things (IoT). The paper presents that soft dry electrode based on polydimethylsiloxane-carbon black (PDMS-CB) conductive polymer is designed and fabricated to continuous, long-term, stable electroophthalmogram (EOG) signal recordings for HMI applications. The features corresponding to the different eye motions are extracted from the EOG data via the soft dry electrodes. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) recognition algorithms are proposed to recognize eye motion behaviors for controlling the motion of the mobile robots. Experiment results have been demonstrated that LDA recognition algorithm achieves a relatively high recognition accuracy of 90.63% for recognizing four eye movements (‘Up’, ‘Down’, ‘Right’, and ‘Left’). The control commands are generated with different eye motions and transmitted to the mobile robot through WiFi communication unit, which the mobile robot is successfully controlled. The soft dry electrodes have the potential in a comfortable, simple, wearable and wireless control of rehabilitation devices.

Long-term epidermal electrophysiological (EP) monitoring is crucial for disease diagnosis and human–machine synergy. The human skin is covered with hair that grows at an average rate of 0.3 mm per day. This impedes a stable contact between the skin and dry epidermal electrodes, resulting in motion artifacts during ultralong-term EP monitoring. Therefore, accurate and high-quality EP signal detection remains challenging. To address this issue, a new solution—the hairy-skin-adaptive viscoelastic dry electrode (VDE) is reported. This innovative technology is capable of bypassing hair and filling into the skin wrinkles, leading to long-lasting and stable interface impedance. The VDE maintains a stable interface impedance for a remarkable period of 48 days and 100 cycles. The VDE is highly effective in shielding against hair disturbances in electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring, even during intense chest expansion, and in electromyography (EMG) monitoring during large strain. Furthermore, the VDE is easily attachable to the skull without requiring any electroencephalogram (EEG) cap or bandage, making it an ideal solution for EEG monitoring. This work represents a substantial breakthrough in the field of EP monitoring, providing a solution for the previously challenging issue of monitoring human EP signals on hairy skin.

Herein, we fabricated a flexible semidry electrode with excellent mechanical performance, satisfactory self-adhesiveness, and low-contact impedance using physical/chemical crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide dual-network hydrogels (PVA/PAM DNHs) as an efficient saline reservoir. The resultant PVA/PAM DNHs showed admirable adhesive and compliance to the hairy scalp, facilitating the establishment of a robust electrode/skin interface for biopotential signal transmission. Moreover, the PVA/PAM DNHs steadily released trace saline onto the scalp to achieve the minimized potential drift (1.47 ± 0.39 mV/min) and low electrode–scalp impedance (18.2 ± 8.9 kΩ @ 10 Hz). More importantly, the application feasibility of real-world brain−computer interfaces (BCIs) was preliminarily validated by 10 participants using two classic BCI paradigms. The mean temporal cross-correlation coefficients between the semidry and wet electrodes in the eyes open/closed and the N200 speller paradigms are 0.919 ± 0.054 and 0.912 ± 0.050, respectively. Both electrodes demonstrate anticipated neuroelectrophysiological responses with similar patterns. This semidry electrode could also effectively capture robust P-QRS-T peaks during electrocardiogram recording. Considering their outstanding advantages of fast setup, user-friendliness, and robust signals, the proposed PVA/PAM DNH-based electrode is a promising alternative to wet electrodes in biopotential signal acquisition.

Epidermal electronics have attracted extensive attention owing to their potential in personal healthcare and human–machine interactions (HMIs). However, their low conductivity and poor ability to conform to the human skin impede their practical application. Herein, a multifunctional flexible dry epidermal electrode for biopotential recording and muscle thermotherapy was developed based a conductive polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS)). PEDOT:PSS was modified using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with hydrophobic groups. The electrode is able to self-adhere to human skin through a hydrophobic interaction with the skin. Moreover, the hydrophilic groups can absorb the humidity under the skin and move it by the hydrophobic groups, which allows the electrode exhibits good gas-permeability. The ultrathin electrode conforms well to the topography of the human skin and, thus, can form a stable and intimate interface with it, resulting in a low electrode–skin contact impedance that allows the recording of biopotentials with high quality. Moreover, the electrode exhibits rapid Joule heating performance at a low voltage (up to 53.8 °C in 12 s at 1.5 V), which is suitable for the electrothermal therapy of muscle. On-body measurements confirm that our electrode could detect muscle fatigue via electromyography (EMG) and perform electrothermal therapy to relieve muscle fatigue. This study offers an efficient method for developing all-in-one wearable flexible epidermal electrode for biopotential recording and muscle theranostics.
