Hydrogel-Based Network Metamaterials with Biological Tissue-like Poisson’s Ratio Behavior and Stress Response

Yisong Qiu,Hongfei Ye,Shuaiqi Zhang,Hongwu Zhang,Yonggang Zheng

Soft network metamaterials are widely used in fields such as flexible electronics, tissue engineering, and biomedicine due to their superior properties including low density, high stretchability, and high breathability. However, the prediction and customization of the nonlinear mechanical behavior of soft network metamaterials remain a challenging problem. In this study, a family of hydrogel-based network metamaterials with biological tissue-like mechanical properties are developed based on a machine learning-driven optimization design method. Numerical and experimental results explain the relationship between the mechanical properties of the designed metamaterials and their microstructural features and stretching ratios. The results indicate that the hydrogel-based network metamaterials exhibit J-shaped stress-deformation (σ–λ) behavior similar to biological tissues. This phenomenon arises from the transition of the deformation mode of metamaterials from bending-dominated to stretching-dominated as the stretching ratio increases. Based on the proposed design scheme, the Poisson’s ratio of metamaterials can be adjusted within a remarkably wide range of −1.06 to 1.34. Furthermore, through optimizing the design parameters of the metamaterial, the customization of network metamaterials with biological tissue-like zero Poisson’s ratio behavior and stress response is achieved. The potential applications of hydrogel-based network metamaterials are demonstrated through artificial skin and LED integrated device. This research offers novel insights into predicting, designing, and fabricating the mechanical behavior of soft network metamaterials.

Intelligent conductive hydrogels for wearable motion monitoring and stress-driven switching between electromagnetic shielding and conversion

Jinghui Meng,Ji Teng,Mengfan Ying,Panbin Zhu,Jiaying Jin,Mi Yan,Guang Liu,Chen Wu

Wearable electronics stimulate substantial demands for flexible hydrogels with exceptional softness and biocompatibility, but remain challenging to achieve multifunctional integration and intelligent function switching. In this study, conductive hydrogels enabling wearable sensing and switchable electromagnetic protection have been designed by incorporating LM and FeNi 3 @carbon nanotubes into the polyvinyl alcohol matrix. Benefitted from the cross-linked conductive networks induced by cyclic freezing-thawing, the hydrogel exhibits excellent flexibility, durability, and stability for real-time human motion monitoring and efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Stretching stress triggers an intelligent function switching from EMI shielding to wave absorption due to optimized impedance matching and enhanced attenuation, giving rise to a broadband electromagnetic absorption of 4.8 GHz. Space electromagnetic field and radar cross-section simulations unravel multiscale electromagnetic interactions, demonstrating the static shielding characteristic and stress-driven enhanced absorption. This work not only provides a novel strategy for the intelligent switchable electromagnetic compatible materials, but also advances insights into multifunctional wearable electronics for extended design in intelligent actuation, human-machine interaction, and healthcare.

Arbitrarily Shapeable Couplant with Fluidity Onset for Conformal Ultrasound

Jian Chen,Youlong Hua,Binjie Jin,Zhan Zhu,Mengru Zhang,Yuhua Zhang,Renan Jin,Xiao Liang,Ruijue Cao,Xinben Hu,Xingkun Man,Li Xi,Baochun Guo,Bingfeng Ju,Qian Zhao

Couplant is indispensable for ultrasound examinations. However, shape adaptability and operational feasibility, which are both crucial, cannot be provided conjointly by existing couplants due to their either liquid or solid form. Here an ideal couplant composed of fibers and dynamically cross-linked polysilicone is reported, which exhibits a unique solid-to-fluid transition upon application of stress exceeding a threshold. Together with the acoustically transparent feature, the particularity of the stress-triggered fluidity allows conformal adapting to arbitrary geometries under stress exertion and stable preserving for long-term and reliable ultrasound examination after stress release. Steeply curved geometries and pressure-sensitive tissues, which are extremely challenging for the state-of-the-art ultrasound modalities, are successfully graphed or treated. This couplant integrates the merits of liquids and solids, providing new opportunities for various ultrasound in industrial and medical fields.

Dual-trigger microcapsules for autonomous crack healing in marine concrete: Synergistic response to mechanical stress and chloride ions

Zhenxing Du,Chenglong Li,Penggang Wang,Zuquan Jin,Li Tian,Aoshen Wang,Min Zhang

To overcome limitations of single-trigger self-healing systems, this study developed microcapsules (MCs) responsive to both mechanical stress and chloride ions for marine concrete repair. Ethyl cellulose/nano-silica shells encapsulating epoxy resin were synthesized via solvent evaporation method, with PbSO 4 embedded for chloride activation. MCs exhibited optimal size (70–120 μm), thermal stability (>190 °C), and homogeneous PbSO 4 distribution. Increasing PbSO 4 content enhanced chloride responsiveness, forming pores that released healing agent via osmotic pressure, while improving MC stiffness. Additionally, the self-healing mortars demonstrate notable strength recovery, with the highest healing rate of 126.30 % under standard curing and 114.50 % under seawater curing, reflecting the MCs' robust performance in aggressive environments. Cracks up to 229.7 μm width were effectively healed within 7 days, with healing efficiency positively correlating with PbSO 4 content. The porosity reduction rate rose with the increase in PbSO4 dosage, reducing porosity by 9.42 %–26.71 % post-healing. Additionally, MC significantly enhanced the chloride ion permeability resistance of self-healing mortars, achieving a reduction rate of 67.37 %–84.90 %. This d ual-trigger system provides targeted, efficient self-healing for marine concrete infrastructure, significantly enhancing durability.

Engineering Stress-Potential Coupled Interface on Ultrathin Lithium Anodes Toward 450 Wh Kg−1-Level Long-Cycling Lithium Metal Batteries

Shaozhen Huang,Tianbao Li,Zhangdi Xie,Kun Li,Yuejiao Chen,Lin Mei,Gui-Chao Kuang,Zhibin Wu,Yu Zhang,Lin Gu,Libao Chen

Dendrite-free lithium anodes are crucial for developing practical high-energy-density batteries (>400 Wh/kg) with extended cycle life, but conventional interface design lack self-adaptive adjustment against dendrite growth during Li plating. Herein, we obtain a dendrite-free ultrathin Li@FcCHO anode by engineering a stress-responsive nano-interface on lithium strips via a mechanochemical reaction between ferrocene carboxaldehyde (FcCHO) and metallic Li. As proved by in situ Kelvin probe force microscopy and scanning electrochemical microscopy tests, the Li@FcCHO anode shows local potential response to the Li plating stress. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations show that the local surface potential change originates from stress-induced redistribution of anion-pair coordination. The stress-potential coupled interface layers induce uniform and dendrite-free Li deposition beneath the interface by suppressing dendritic Li from capturing Li + with the extra electric field. As a result, the Li@FcCHO anode exhibits ultralong cycling life over 5000 h under high areal capacity conditions, whilst a practical 452 Wh/kg pouch cell (9 Ah) based on the Li@FcCHO anode can survive over 470 cycles with capacity retention of 85.20%. This work pioneers a stress-potential coupled interface design to advance practical ultrathin Li anodes for next-generation high-energy-density batteries.

Preparation, self-assembly and performance modulation of gold nanoparticles decorated ferrocene-containing hybrid block copolymer multifunctional materials

Jian-Guo Zhang,Xue-Yin Zhang,Hua Yu,Yan-Ling Luo,Feng Xu,Ya-Shao Chen

Gold nanoparticles decorated stimuli-responsive copolymer hybrids, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate)- block -poly( N -isopropylacryamide) decorated with gold nanoparticles, were synthesized through two-step successive RAFT and ensuing in-situ reduction. The hybrids could self-assemble into interesting micelle structures from globular, wormlike to rodlike shapes by altering the quality and compositions of solvents and ionic strength, and exhibited multifunctionality including quasi-reversible electrochemical behavior, redox-stress responsiveness and temperature sensitivity. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties were modulated by tailor-making the system compositions and redox reaction. The copolymer hybrids were expected to broaden their applications in nanobiomedicine including targeted drug carriers and magnetic resonance imaging, optical, electrochemical catalyst, optoelectronics and sensors etc .
