Flexible sensitive hydrogels gain comprehensive research interests in fabricating human-machine interfacial devices. However, they face a great challenge of incompatibility among high strength , ultra-toughness and good conductivity, and count on an external power supply. In the work, 4-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl-1- phenylene acid (MBA) and 1,4-(5-hexenyloxy) benzene (RM26) are synthesized as supramolecular crosslinker and inserted into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel. A series of conductive hydrogels (PVA-PMR-NaCls) are produced by salt immersion method. The optimal PVA-PMR-NaCl exhibits the toughness of 15.92MJ·m −3 , the elongation at break of 600%, the tensile strength of 5.61 MPa and the Young's modulus of 2.16 MPa. It withstands the side effect of saline ions because the defined molecules with flexible chain segment and rigid group intervene. The conductivity for PVA-PMR-NaCl is 3.0 S·m −1 prior to original PVA-NaCl owing to the carboxyl in network. It shows high gauge factor ( GF ) toward tensile strain , which achieves 6.24 above 200% strain. The PVA-PMR-NaCl sensor presents high sensitivity, stability and quick responsiveness during detecting human movement. Furthermore, the self-powered PVA-PMR-NaCl sensor by assembling with zinc foil and copper foil achieves the open circuit voltage of 0.809 V, and can likewise trace the stretching, bending and compressing movement according to current change. So, it will be a promising candidate as a self-powered multi-functional sensor.

Double-network (DN) hydrogels with high strength and toughness have shown their potential for applications in materials science and biomedical engineering. Biocompatible sodium alginate (SA)/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels are a promising class of DN hydrogels, which are typically cross-linked with calcium ions (Ca2+). However, the use of calcium salts typically induces structural inhomogeneity and reduces the mechanical properties of the resultant hydrogels, which limit their application in tissue scaffolds, actuators, and wearable devices. Herein, we fabricate a homogeneous polymer DN hydrogel by pre-seeding calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles into SA/PAM hydrogels, followed by the triggered release of Ca2+ from the microparticles in acidic solution. The acid-triggered cross-linking generates sacrificial ionic bonds capable of dissipating energy, which endows the Ca2+/SA/PAM DN hydrogels with high tensile strength (0.85 MPa), stretchability (1850%), and fracture toughness (6.4 MJ m−3). These properties can be easily adjusted by controlling the trigger time as well as the concentration of the CaCO3 microparticles. In addition, the Ca2+/SA/PAM DN hydrogel exhibits high strain sensitivity with a gauge factor of ∼8.9, a wide strain detection range (0.03–1800%), and excellent durability (500 cycles at a strain of 50%), which can be used as a strain sensor to monitor human motions with a fast response (∼0.02 s). Furthermore, the Ca2+/SA/PAM DN hydrogel as a sensor can monitor the pain signal induced by an in situ cascade reaction at a wound site in a diabetic rat model. This study provides a controllable strategy to engineer stretchable and tough DN hydrogels for potential applications in flexible devices.

Electronic skins (e-skins) have shown great potential in “bionic-machine” technologies. The development of bio-compatible e-skins that mimic the functions of the human skin, which is sensitive to multiple external stimuli, remains a challenge and a highly pursued goal. In this work, we report the synthesis, characterization, and performance-optimization of a thermo-sensitive and conductive hydrogel that displays multimodal sensing capacity. The optimal composition of a hydrogel with a volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) of 38 °C and a transition width of 15 °C was developed. This gel has an elastic modulus similar to that of the human skin, a large stretchability of 1900%, and a high gauge factor of 9.8. The gel is also puncture-resistant, self-healable, and self-adhesive. The as-fabricated hydrogel can sense multimodal stimuli, including force and temperature, with high sensitivity. We demonstrate that the gel possesses important attributes as a candidate for e-skin to monitor physiological signals including temperature, bending, and pressure in real time.

Stretchable organohydrogel fibers are attracting considerable interest for next-generation flexible and wearable soft strain sensors due to their excellent stability in harsh environments. However, due to the uniformly distributed ions and reduced number of carriers in the whole material, the sensitivity of organohydrogel fibers under subzero temperature is not desirable, which significantly hinders their practical application. Herein, a newly competitive proton-trapping strategy was designed to obtain anti-freezing organohydrogel fibers for high-performance wearable strain sensors via a simple freezing–thawing process, in which tetraaniline (TANI), serving as the proton trapper, and representing the shortest repeated structural unit of polyaniline (PANI), was physically crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (PTOH). The as-prepared PTOH fiber exhibited an outstanding sensing performance at −40 °C due to the unevenly distributed ion carriers and the highly breakable proton-migration pathways, with a high gauge factor of 24.6 at a strain of 200–300%. Moreover, the existence of hydrogen bonds between the TANI and PVA chains endowed PTOH with a high tensile strength (1.96 MPa) and toughness (8.0 MJ m−3). Accordingly, strain sensors made from PTOH fibers and knitted textiles could monitor human motions rapidly and sensitively, demonstrating their potential as wearable anti-freezing anisotropic strain sensors.

Herein, a novel three-dimensional nanocomposite aerogel (rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs) with outstanding magnetoresistance and piezoresistance was manufactured by the in-situ polymerized polyaniline nanoarrays (PANI NAs) surrounding magnetic reduced graphene oxide (rGO/Fe 3 O 4 ) aerogel that was prepared through the combination of hydrothermal method and lyophilization method. This rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs nanocomposite aerogel with 60 wt.% loading of PANI NAs well preserved the porous structure and gained a superior mechanical strength (121.04 kPa) compared with that of rGO aerogel, rGO/Fe 3 O 4 aerogel, and rGO/PANI NAs aerogel (43.54, 58.12, and 116.98 kPa, respectively). The rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs nanocomposite aerogel could hold its original state with almost 100% recovery ratio after cycling compression tests under 80% of deformation strain at a suitable compression rate of 5 mm min −1 . The introduction of PANI NAs into the rGO/Fe 3 O 4 aerogel also brought a satisfactory piezoresistive performance with a large gauge factor up to 2.83 and a superb stability for the electrical signal output (which was decreased only 5.80% after 500 compression cycles) to the rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs nanocomposite aerogel. The loading of Fe 3 O 4 and PANI NAs also provided rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs nanocomposite aerogel with a negative magnetoresistance value up to − 4.37%. The magnetoresistance was explained via the amelioration of spin transport in the material. The unique negative magnetoresistance and excellent piezoresistance make rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs nanocomposite aerogel a promising candidate for the development of advanced electronic devices. Graphical abstract A novel three-dimensional nanocomposite aerogel (rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /PANI NAs) exhibits amazing negative magnetoresistance and outstanding piezoresistive performance.

Simultaneously having competitive compressive properties, fatigue-resistant stability, excellent conductivity and sensitivity has still remained a challenge for acrylic-based conductive hydrogels, which is critical in their use in the sensor areas where pressure is performed. In this work, an integrated strategy was proposed for preparing a conductive hydrogel based on acrylic acid (AA) and sodium alginate (SA) by addition of carboxylic-cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-COOH) followed by metal ion interaction to reinforce its compressive strength and conductivity simultaneously. The CNC-COOH played a multifunctional role in the hydrogel by well-dispersing SA and AA in the hydrogel precursor solution for forming a uniform semi-interpenetrating network, providing more hydrogen bonds with SA and AA, more -COOH for metal ion interactions to form uniform multi-network, and also offering high modulus to the final hydrogel. Accordingly, the as-prepared hydrogels showed simultaneous excellent compressive strength (up to 3.02 MPa at a strain of 70 %) and electrical conductivity (6.25 S m −1 ), good compressive fatigue-resistant (93.2 % strength retention after 1000 compressive cycles under 50 % strain) and high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 14.75). The hydrogel strain sensor designed in this work is capable of detecting human body movement of pressing, stretching and bending with highly sensitive conductive signals, which endows it great potential for multi-scenario strain sensing applications.

Due to the constraints of photoinitiators and mechanical properties, vat photopolymerization 3D printable hydrogels are still the focus of current research. Drawing inspiration from the water-soluble modification of the photoinitiator diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO), a rapid and expedient UV-curable hydrogel with remarkable strength and toughness has been developed using polymerizable micelles . The incorporation of polymerizable micelles not only significantly enhances the solubility of TPO, an efficient commercial photoinitiator, thereby eliminating the need for specific organic solvents , but also serves as physical crosslinking points for polymer chains. Moreover, by harnessing the abundant hydrogen bonding present in glycerol and plant cellulose, the precursor hydrogel exhibits a rapid layer-by-layer printing capability of 6 s per layer, accompanied by an enhanced mechanical toughness reaching 4.55 MJ/m³. The hydrogel-based resistance sensor demonstrates wide-ranging detection capabilities and high sensitivity. It has the gauge factor (GF) of 2.28 within low strains (<100 %) and can maintain a high linear GF of 5.84 even under large strains (200–500 %). This allows the hydrogel-based sensor to have a significant change in relative resistance when detecting human limb movements. The lattice structure design imparts a notable pressure sensitivity of 1.13 KPa −1 . Additionally, the utilization of a glycerol/water binary solvent ensures excellent water retention properties. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibits significant advantages in capacitive sensors owing to its printed surface gradient bulge structure. Consequently, the hydrogel developed in this study possesses exceptional printing abilities, high strength, and impressive toughness, making it a valuable option for the design and fabrication of flexible electronic devices.
