Underwater adhesion plays an essential role in soft electronics for the underwater interface. Although hydrogel-based electronics are of great interest, because of their versatility, water molecules prevent hydrogels from adhering to substrates, thus bottlenecking further applications. Herein, inspired by the barnacle proteins, MXene/PHMP hydrogels with strong repeatable underwater adhesion are developed through the random copolymerization of 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate, and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide with the presence of MXene nanosheets. The hydrogels are mechanically tough (elastic modulus of 32 kPa, fracture stress of 0.11 MPa), and 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate (PEA) with aromatic groups endows the hydrogel with nonswelling property and prevents water molecules from invading the adhesive interface, rendering the hydrogels an outstanding adhesive behavior toward various substrates (including glass, iron, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), porcine). Besides, dynamic physical interactions allow for instant and repeatable underwater adhesion. Furthermore, the MXene/PHMP hydrogels exhibit a high conductivity (0.016 S/m), fast responsiveness, and superior sensitivity as a strain sensor (gauge factor = 7.17 at 200%–500% strain) and pressure sensor (0.63 kPa–1 at 0–70 kPa). The underwater applications of bionic hydrogel-based sensors have been demonstrated, such as human motion, pressure sensing, and holding objects. It is anticipated that the instant and repeatable underwater adhesive hydrogel-based sensors extend the underwater applications of hydrogel electronics.

The popularity of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensor research stems from their excellent strain responsiveness and efficient conduction capability. In this study, maleic anhydride (MA)-modified soy protein isolate (MSPI) crosslinked with acrylamide (AM) to form a hydrogel with a tensile strength of 225 kPa at an MSPI content of 16 %. Furthermore, the incorporation of 15 % of lithium chloride (LiCl) significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel (namely MSPI 0.16 Li 0.15 ), mechanical strength (tensile stress ∼ 238 kPa with a fracture strain of 241 %) and swelling resistance. MSPI 0.16 Li 0.15 presented a high conductivity of 2.8 S/m, surpassing that of a plethora of bio-based hydrogels. Additionally, MSPI 0.16 Li 0.15 was successfully employed to monitor the movement of fingers, elbows, knees and other joints, and can successfully maintain strain sensing under different pH conditions (pH 1, 3, 5, 9, 11 and 13) and organic solvents. It demonstrated distinct electrical responses to various strains, making it suitable for sensing human motion. This work contributes to the development of hydrogels with enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, promising applications in the field of flexible sensors.

Although flexible sensors have attracted considerable attention in emerging fields, including wearable electronics and soft robotics, their stability must be considered in practical applications, especially the effects of external factors on the sensing performance. Herein, a recyclable flexible sensor with superhydrophobicity and a highly sensitive strain response was developed by combining electrospinning and ultrasonication anchoring techniques. The constructed hierarchical network structure is composed of the fluorine-free superhydrophobic multiwalled carbon nanotubes and a porous elastomer membrane substrate reinforced by nanoparticles. The obtained sensor exhibited exceptional strain-sensing performance in terms of ultrahigh sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 12 172.46), a fast response time of 80 ms, and excellent durability (10 000 cycles). Based on these outstanding merits, the strain sensor can detect various human motions without being interfered with by harsh environments. Moreover, superhydrophobic membranes can be combined with electronic devices for weather monitoring and underwater sensing. Noteworthily, damaged sensors can be quickly dissolved by a small amount of cyclohexane, enabling material recovery. The recyclable multifunctional membranes could reduce the potential pollution to the environment and show highly promising applications in complex environments.

Ionogels exhibit outstanding ionic conductivity, thermal stability, and non-volatility, positioning them as highly promising for sensor devices rivaling hydrogels. However, the inherent limitation of most existing ionogels is that their strength and toughness are not ideal, which significantly hinders their widespread application. One possible method is using natural wood with anisotropic properties to reinforce ionogels. Herein, we reported a top-down approach to obtain a semi-dissolved wood template, in which the delignified balsa wood was heated and impregnated in an ionic liquid to partially dissolve the cellulose in the wood skeleton. Finally, acrylic acid was infiltrated into the wood template, and the wood-based ionogels with a dual network were successfully synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The prepared wood-based ionogels were significantly anisotropic with longitudinal strength up to 9.0 MPa and radial strength of 0.97 MPa. These wood ionogels also have translucency (53.9 %), anti-drying (remain stable at room temperature for more than 30 days), fatigue resistance (>500 loading cycles), and flexibility. In addition, they have excellent electrical conductivity (3.8 μS cm −1 ) with high sensitivity (GF = 8.6), making them ideal candidates for strain sensors capable of detecting a wide range of human activities. The preparation of gel using semi-dissolved wood as a template provides an advanced strategy for producing biomass-based flexible gel materials.

Abstract Novel, flexible, smart cellulose nanocomposite plates were fabricated by coating graphene nanoplate (GnPs) solution on the surface of cellulose sol, followed by hot pressing, in which GnPs was directly exfoliated and dispersed by PVP as exfoliating and dispersing agent. The structure, properties, and dual sensing (strain and pressure) of the resultant cellulose/GnPs nanocomposite plates (CGP) were systematically investigated. The formed conductive graphene network within the cellulose substrate, and the strong interfacial adhesion between cellulose and GnPs endowed the CGP excellent electromechanical properties, i.e. low electrical resistance (< 270 Ω cm), stable sensitivity on strain (GF 5.87) and pressure (S 0.037 kPa −1 ), good durability (> 1000 loading/unloading cycles). This work provided a green and facile approach to fabricate smart cellulose sensor responding to different external stimuli like stretch and compress by electrical resistance changes. Mussel-inspired conductive hydrogels are attractive for the development of next-generation self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors. However, despite extensive progress, there are still some daunting challenges that hinder their applications, such as inferior optical transparency, low catechol content (e.g., poor adhesion), as well as limited sensation performances. Here, we report a dopamine-triggered gelation (DTG) strategy for fabricating mussel-inspired, transparent, and conductive hydrogels. The DTG design leverages on the dual functions of dopamine, which serves as both polymerization initiator and dynamic mediator to elaborate and orchestrate the cross-linking networks of hydrogels, allowing for pronounced adhesion, robust elasticity, self-healing ability, excellent injectability and three-dimensional printability, reversible and tunable transparent-opaque transition, and thermoresponsive feature. These preferable performances enable DTG hydrogels as self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors for achieving multiple sensations toward pressure, strain, and temperature, even an extraordinary visual perception effect, making it a step closer in the exploration of future biomimetic skin.
