Dual-function ionic flexible sensors with linear humidity and strain perception based on grid weave structure

Huanyu Liu,Mingxin Wu,Jiaming Fan,Tingyu Xu,Yunhui Wu

Multifunctional flexible sensors capable of detecting strain and humidity are crucial for the accurate, stable, and safe information between individuals and objects in complex environments. However, achieving dual-function ionic flexible sensors (IFS) with linear humidity and strain perception remains an enormous challenge. This paper introduces a multifunctional wearable sensor based on ionic liquids (ILs) capable of simultaneously detecting humidity and strain. The sensor utilizes a grid-structured thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fiber via near-field electrospinning (NFS) technology, and encapsulates it with IL-bonded waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to achieve linear sensing of both humidity and strain. Owing to the grid structure design, the sensor exhibits high linearity in the detection of both humidity and strain. Moreover, the sensor exhibits excellent stability and mechanical flexibility, and a quick response to humidity changes, a short recovery time. Consequently, the sensor can successfully monitor human respiration with strain interference. Additionally, the mechanism of the grid-structured effect on sensing signals linearity is revealed. This research paves the way for dual-function flexible sensors and their applications in human movement, respiration monitoring, and human-machine interaction.

Stretchable, Multiplexed, and Bimodal Sensing Electronic Armor for Colonoscopic Continuum Robot Enhanced by Triboelectric Artificial Synapse

Yuyang Sun,Tao Chen,Dongsheng Li,Hanyang Li,Tianci Ji,Fengxia Wang,Lining Sun,Chengkuo Lee,Huicong Liu

Colonoscopic continuum robots often lack sensing capabilities, risking tissue damage. An ideal robot electronic skin should offer full-body coverage, multiplexing, stretchability, and multifunctionality, but integration is challenging due to the robot's elongated structure. This work presents a stretchable electronic armor (E-armor) with a 3D crosslinked structure that enables 300 mm full coverage while accomplishing multiplexed simultaneous tactile and strain sensing through bioinspired artificial synapse mechanisms. The E-armor integrates 48 tactile sensing points through bilayer co-electrode strategy, reducing wiring while combining triboelectric encoding intelligence with innovative stretchable triboelectric interlinked films (TIFs) to form a triboelectric artificial synapse that generates digitally encoded signal pairs upon contact. A convolutional neural network and long short-term memory network (CNN-LSTM) deep learning framework achieve 99.31% accuracy in identifying multi-point tactile signals. A sodium alginate/polyacrylamide/sodium chloride (SA/PAM/NaCl) conductive hydrogel serves as a strain sensing element, providing excellent stretchability and biocompatibility, and allowing precise inference of bending angles at 12 strain sensing edges. A compliance control strategy coordinates tactile and strain signals to autonomously adjust continuum robot postures while ensuring smooth operation. The digital twin-based 3D visualization interface enhances human–robot interaction by digitally reconstructing both tactile and strain feedback, enabling real-time visualization of the continuum robot's intracolonic posture.

Dual-parameter stretchable, transferable mesh piezoresistive sensor for electronic skin detection of strain and temperature changes

Chunhui Wang,Chaojie Xin,Qihang Song,Shuobang Wang,Siyi Cheng,Chao Shi,Dongyuan Zhao,Qingyuan He,Jie Zhang,Xiaoming Chen

Wearable sensors integrating multiple functions have great potential in artificial intelligence and flexible electronics at this stage and can perceive various external stimuli with high sensitivity and accuracy, such as strain, stress, and temperature. However, because multiple parameters do affect each other and reduce the sensing performance, making a single device that can detect multiple functions simultaneously is a huge challenge. In this paper, a strain-temperature dual-parameter sensor is developed with a planar structure design and used poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonic acid) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes polymerization materials to prepare a micron-sized film. The influence of two-dimensional structures on sensing performance is explored through simulation, and a structure with large deformation is selected to improve the strain detection range. The sensor can detect static and dynamic strain signals, and can maintain good linearity and response speed below 100 ms within a large strain range of 20%. In addition, the sensor also exhibits good temperature detection capability, with a temperature sensitivity of 18.2 μV K−1 and the ability to detect static and dynamic temperature changes with long-term stability. Finally, the sensor is tested in some actual scenarios, reflecting that the sensor manufactured has the dual-detection ability, showing sensitive strain monitoring and temperature perception decoupled between the dual signals. The sensor is realized with circuit board acquisition and wireless communication, combining multi-channel applications. Our research provides a feasible method for constructing multi-parameter human-computer interaction sensors.

Self-Decoupled 3D Motion Sensors for Body-Posture Reconstruction

Liangxu Xu,Fangfang Gao,Xiaochen Xun,Liubing Fan,Xinqin Liao,Ke Ren,Shuchang Zhao,Han Bi,Haoran Zhao,Lusen Gao,Xuan Zhao,Qingliang Liao,Yue Zhang

Wearable 3D motion capture is a critical technology that underpins human–machine interactions, metaversing, and telemedicine. However, most existing sensors face challenges in achieving accurate vector perception and efficient decoupling of 3D motion. In this study, self-decoupled 3D motion sensors are constructed by vertically integrating uniaxial pressure- and biaxial strain-sensing units based on ordered conductive fibers. The developed sensors can specifically perceive body movements and automatically decompose them into a normal-pressure component and two planar-strain components along three orthogonal axes, with the intensities of the three-axis signals indicating the motion amplitude and direction. Notably, the sensors exhibit a directional resolution of 2°, with detection ranges of 100 kPa for stress and 100% for strain, whereas the crosstalk between the two units remains at 2.08% of the full scale. Furthermore, a wearable 3D motion-capture system is developed, enabling the acquisition of comprehensive movement data, including amplitudes and directions, with an accuracy of 99% for recognizing motion modes. The real-time reconstruction and visual synchronization of body postures are demonstrated in the virtual reality environment. This study offers an alternative perspective on wearable 3D motion capture for widespread applications in intelligent societies.

Self-Adaptive Perception of Object's Deformability with Multiple Deformation Attributes Utilizing Biomimetic Mechanoreceptors

Waner Lin,Ziya Wang,Yingtian Xu,Zhixian Hu,Wenyu Zhao,Zhihao Zhu,Zhenglong Sun,Guoxing Wang,Zhengchun Peng

The perception of object's deformability in unstructured interactions relies on both kinesthetic and cutaneous cues to adapt the uncertainties of an object. However, the existing tactile sensors cannot provide adequate cutaneous cues to self-adaptively estimate the material softness, especially in non-standard contact scenarios where the interacting object deviates from the assumption of an elastic half-infinite body. This paper proposes an innovative design of a tactile sensor that integrates the capabilities of two slow-adapting mechanoreceptors within a soft medium, allowing self-decoupled sensing of local pressure and strain at specific locations within the contact interface. By leveraging these localized cutaneous cues, the sensor can accurately and self-adaptively measure the material softness of an object, accommodating variations in thicknesses and applied forces. Furthermore, when combined with a kinesthetic cue from the robot, the sensor can enhance tactile expression by the synergy of two relevant deformation attributes, including material softness and compliance. It is demonstrated that the biomimetic fusion of tactile information can fully comprehend the deformability of an object, hence facilitating robotic decision-making and dexterous manipulation.

A supramolecular biomimetic skin combining a wide spectrum of mechanical properties and multiple sensory capabilities

Lei Zhouyue,Wu Peiyi

Biomimetic skin-like materials, capable of adapting shapes to variable environments and sensing external stimuli, are of great significance in a wide range of applications, including artificial intelligence, soft robotics, and smart wearable devices. However, such highly sophisticated intelligence has been mainly found in natural creatures while rarely realized in artificial materials. Herein, we fabricate a type of biomimetic iontronics to imitate natural skins using supramolecular polyelectrolyte hydrogels. The dynamic viscoelastic networks provide the biomimetic skin with a wide spectrum of mechanical properties, including flexible reconfiguration ability, robust elasticity, extremely large stretchability, autonomous self-healability, and recyclability. Meanwhile, polyelectrolytes’ ionic conductivity allows multiple sensory capabilities toward temperature, strain, and stress. This work provides not only insights into dynamic interactions and sensing mechanism of supramolecular iontronics, but may also promote the development of biomimetic skins with sophisticated intelligence similar to natural skins.

Silk fibroin/polyacrylamide-based tough 3D printing scaffold with strain sensing ability and chondrogenic activity

Yanan Geng,Tiexin Liu,Menglu Zhao,Haifeng Wei,Xiang Yao,Yaopeng Zhang

Cartilage tissue plays an important role in our life activities. The poor self-repair capacity makes cartilage tissue engineering an urgent clinical demand. Among them, the development of tissue engineering scaffolds with both biomimetic features and microenvironment signal sensing abilities could significantly promote the development of cartilage tissue engineering. While most of the reported cartilage scaffolds have no intelligent sensing features. Herein, a ternary composite 3D printing scaffold with both strain sensing ability and desired mechanical property was developed, by using regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) and polyacrylamide (PAM) as main matrixes, and oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers (OBC) as filler. Then, the mechanical property, strain sensing ability and corresponding ectopic chondrogenic activity of the RSF/PAM/OBC 3D printing scaffold were comprehensively investigated and verified through in vitro and in vivo studies. Results showed that the RSF/PAM/OBC (OBC-6.3 wt%) scaffold owns effective strain sensing property and desired ectopic chondrogenesis capabilities in the subcutaneous microenvironment. It could be used for reliable monitoring the joint movements, related motion amplitudes, and also promoting the cartilage specifical genes expression. These features not only confirmed the great potential of these smart scaffolds for applications in tissue reconstruction and mechanical stimulus monitoring of the corresponding tissue microenvironment, but also proved the possibility of employing various 3D printing scaffolds as flexible bioelectronics.
