The advent of high-performance conductive organohydrogels, which are sustainable in extremely cold environment, has attracted immersing interest in biosensors. In this work, a highly stretchable, self-healable, adhesive and antibacterial cellulose-based ionic conductive organohydrogel with low-temperature strain sensitivity was developed, using in-situ polymerization of acrylamide in glycerol-water with poly (vinyl alcohol), chitosan, FeCl 3 and 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TCNF). Owing to their chemically cross-linked structures and multiple H-bonding networks, the organohydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, such as high stretchability (540 %), high compression strength (0.44 MPa), nearly 87 % self-healing efficiency and adhesive to various substrates. Also, good antibacterial property was confirmed by the diameter of inhibition zone (∼5.1 mm) against Salmonella enteritidis . Notably, the organohydrogels remained high conductivity and flexibility even below −20 °C, which can be applied as low-temperature strain sensor for real-time. Therefore, it has promising applications in artificial intelligence and personal healthcare under cold environment.

Fiber-based architectures exhibit remarkable advantages in wearable electronics. Despite the various techniques to achieve strain sensitive fibers, important factors concerning the sensing performance, e.g. fiber arrangement, have been rarely explored. Herein, various fiber sensing patterns with anisotropic and isotropic microstructures were fabricated, and their localized strain distribution and conductive pathway configuration were tailored through fiber alignment. The sensing performance and mechanisms were investigated based on experimental characterization and theoretical modeling. We find out that the fibers arrangement strongly determines their strain sensitive behavior including sensitivity and sensing range. Additionally, by introducing a mechanical-guided step to realize a constant microcrack density in the fiber patterns, strain sensitivity and stability can be further improved. As a proof of concept, we integrated two fiber array sensors into a strain sensing system to simultaneously achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor up to 9540) and a wide sensing range (0.01–110%) as well as fast response.

This paper proposes a flexible sensor for detecting cracks on bridges. Strain and deflection sensing modules are integrated on the film that is made of composite conductive materials. By optimizing the preparation ratio and internal structure, the strain detection accuracy and sensitivity of the sensor have been improved. The bridge crack detection accuracy reached 91%, which is higher than current sensors. Experimental results show that the composite material containing 2.23 wt% carbon black (CB) mixed hybrid filler has good linearity, higher accuracy than sensors in use, excellent stretchability (>155%), high gauge factor (GF ~ 43.3), and excellent durability over 2000 stretching-releasing cycles under 10 N. The designed flexible sensor demonstrates the practicality and effectiveness of bridge crack detection and provides a feasible solution for accurate bridge health monitoring in the future.

Hydrogel wearable sensors with multifunctional characteristics are highly desirable in the development of the current environment. Besides the constant concern of high conductivity and good mechanical properties, antibacterial properties and self-healing capability are also essential to hydrogel strain sensors. Herein, inspired by the purslane, the multifunctional hydrogel sensors (p(AAm/DMLB)/IL-LPs/c-MWCNTs) were mainly constructed by the copolymerization of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMLB) and polyacrylamide p(AAm) without adding external antimicrobial agents in a facile strategy. The results exhibited DMLB could contribute not only the antimicrobial properties, but also interact with the carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) and ionic liquid (IL)-latex particles (LPs) by hydrogen bond cross-linking and physical entanglement, respectively, which significantly enhanced the mechanical strength and resilience of the hydrogel sensors. Notably, without adding inorganic salt, the obtained hydrogel sensors owned a wide spectrum of sensory properties and high strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.71 at 100–1100%, quick response = 500 ms) owing to the synergistic effect between IL and c-MWCNTs. Moreover, the hydrogel sensors exhibited anti-piercing for efficient energy dissipation, together with self-healing properties. Therefore, the integration of self-healing, conductive and antibacterial hydrogel-based strain sensors will display broad application in sophisticated intelligence, soft robotics, bionic prosthetics, personal health care, and other fields using inexpensive, green, and easily available biomass.

Graphical All-in-one : Besides the good mechanical properties of being tough and stretchable, this DNA-inspired hydrogel also exhibits both self-adhesive and strain-sensitive properties and could monitor a person's motions as good strain sensor. Hydrogels used as strain sensors often rely on splicing tapes to attach them to surfaces, which causes much inconvenience. Therefore, to develop strain sensor hydrogels that possess both good mechanical properties and self-adhesion is still a great challenge. Inspired by the multiple hydrogen bonding interactions of nucleobases in DNA, we designed and synthesized a series of hydrogels PAAm-GO-Aba/Tba/Aba+Tba comprising polyacrylamide (PAAm), graphene oxide (GO), acrylated adenine and thymine (Aba and Tba). The introduction of nucleobases helps hydrogels to adhere to various substrates through multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. It has also been found that the adhesive strength of hydrogels with nucleobases for hogskin increased to 2.5 times that of those without nucleobases. Meanwhile, these hydrogels exhibited good dynamic mechanical and self-recovery properties. They can be directly attached to human skin as strain sensors to monitor the motions of finger, wrist, and elbow. Electrical tests indicate that they give precise real-time monitoring data and exhibit good strain sensitivity and electrical stability. This work provides a promising basis from which to explore the fabrication of tough, self-adhesive, and strain-sensitive hydrogels as strain sensors for applications in wearable devices and healthcare monitoring.

The fast development of terahertz technologies demands high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to create safe electromagnetic environments. Despite tremendous breakthroughs in achieving superb shielding efficiency (SE), conventional shielding materials have high reflectivity and cannot be re-edited or recycled once formed, resulting in detrimental secondary electromagnetic pollution and poor adaptability. Herein, a hydrogel-type shielding material incorporating MXene and poly(acrylic acid) is fabricated through a biomineralization-inspired assembly route. The composite hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchability and recyclability, favorable shape adaptability and adhesiveness, and fast self-healing capability, demonstrating great application flexibility and reliability. More interestingly, the shielding performance of the hydrogel shows absorption-dominated feature due to the combination of the porous structure, moderate conductivity, and internal water-rich environment. High EMI SE of 45.3 dB and broad effective absorption bandwidth (0.2–2.0 THz) with excellent refection loss of 23.2 dB can be simultaneously achieved in an extremely thin hydrogel (0.13 mm). Furthermore, such hydrogel demonstrates sensitive deformation responses and can be used as an on-skin sensor. This work provides not only an alternative strategy for designing next-generation EMI shielding material but also a highly efficient and convenient method for fabricating MXene composite on macroscopic scales.

To extend the applications of natural polymer-based hydrogels to wearable sensors, it is both important and a great challenge to improve their mechanical and electrical performance. In this work, highly stretchable, strain-sensitive, and ionic-conductive cellulose-based hydrogels (CHs) were prepared by random copolymerization of allyl cellulose and acrylic acid. The acquired hydrogels exhibit high stretchability (~142% of tensile strain) and good transparency (~86% at 550 nm). In addition, the hydrogels not only demonstrate better sensitivity in a wide linear range (0–100%) but also exhibit excellent repeatable and stable signals even after 1000 cycles. Notably, hydrogel-based wearable sensors were successfully constructed to detect human movements. Their reliability, sensitivity, and wide-range properties endow the CHs with great potential for application in various wearable sensors. Keywords:stretchability;strain sensitivity;cellulose-based hydrogels;ionic conductivity;wearable sensors

Flexible strain sensors, based on their good electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, are widely used in wearable health monitoring, sensitive tactile information display and multi-functional robot skin. However, it is still a challenge for wearable devices to prepare conductive hydrogel with flexibility, high strain, high sensitivity and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed an interpenetrating network conductive composite hydrogel, which composed with polyaniline, double bond modified chitosan and acrylamide, has excellent strength and toughness due to its unique physically and chemically cross-linked double network. The obtained hydrogel exhibited good tensile strength (0.3 MPa), high electrical conductivity (6.97 S/m) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor 15.9). The results showed that the strain sensor could detect the movement of human joints through electrical signals, and had good stability and reproducibility, which indicated that it was expected to be used in wearable health monitoring and multi-functional robot skin.

Conductive hydrogels have great potential as flexible sensors in wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to integrate excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, and sensitivity into hydrogels using simple green methods. Here, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and MXene were introduced into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel system based on the multi-scale synergistic enhancement mechanism of nanocomposites. By forming interfacial hydrogen bonds and entanglement of molecular chains, a nanofiber-reinforced PVA/CNF/MXene (PCM) hydrogel was developed. MXene enhances the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel, reaching 0.175 S/m, which represents a 191.7% increase compared to the hydrogel without MXene. The synergistic enhancement between CNF and MXene confers the PCM hydrogel with high mechanical strength (334 kPa) and high stretchability (339%). Moreover, PCM hydrogel serves as a strain sensor with outstanding strain sensitivity (GF = 3.25), wide dynamic detection range (0%–220%), and low detection threshold (0.3%), demonstrating excellent stability and durability in response to stimulus signals. The hydrogel sensor enables accurate detection of subtle human movements and synchronized control of robotic arms, demonstrating its broad applicability in motion monitoring and human–machine interaction (HMI).

Hydrogel-based sensors commonly manifest pronounced swelling in aqueous milieus, a phenomenon that can precipitate deterioration of mechanical performance and distortion in output signals, thereby markedly constraining their expansive applicability. Drawing inspiration from the hierarchical heterogeneous cross-linking architecture inherent in biological tissues, an anti-swelling supramolecular hydrogel with robustness, fast self-recovery, and strain-sensitivity was meticulously engineered through leveraging the principles of multiple dynamic interaction matching. The heterogeneous structure for the hydrogels was constructed by integrating both ‘rigid’ carboxyl-Zr4+ coordination complexes and ‘soft’ hydrophobic micro-regions mediated by electrostatic interactions into the system. The synergistic interplay between reversible rigid and flexible cross-linking endowed the supramolecular hydrogels with robust mechanical properties, evidenced by a strength of 3.64 MPa, toughness of 6.83 MJ m−3, and complete self-recovery within 7 minutes, alongside anti-swelling capabilities in various aqueous environments, including acidic, alkaline, and saline solutions. Moreover, the hydrogels developed desirable sensing properties on account of the contribution of dynamic ions (Br−, Cl−, and Zr4+), enabling accurate signal output under diversified frequencies and strains. Consequently, these hydrogels were adapted to construct underwater sensors capable of transmitting information through Morse code. This bio-inspired design strategy achieved the perfect combination of mechanical, anti-swelling, and sensing properties in the hydrogels, offering novel insights into the fabrication of underwater sensors.

Flexible conductive nanofibers play a crucial role in constructing hydrogels with human-like skin properties. However, it is still a challenge to construct flexible conductive nanofibers with good comprehensive properties. In this paper, we prepare composite fibers with excellent comprehensive properties by coating polyaniline (PANI) on the surface of flexible boron nitride nanofiber (BNNFs) template. BNNFs-PANI/PVA multifunctional composite hydrogels are created through the integration of BNNFs-PANI as nanofillers with soft poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix using a one-pot self-assembly method. The composite hydrogels exhibit outstanding plasticity, self-adhesion, and self-healing properties, with a self-healing efficiency reaching up to 96% within 120 s. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the composite hydrogels has been enhanced by 36%, with the elongation at break exceeding 1500%. The compressive strength of the composite hydrogels at 60% strain is increased by 62%. Beyond these mechanical and self-healing features similar to human skin, the composite hydrogels also can serve as electronic pen for painting on a touchable electronic screen, simulating the function of human skin. Moreover, the dynamic changes in the abundant conductive network contribute to the composite hydrogels’ high strain sensitivity. Compared with pure PVA hydrogels, it is improved by 29%. Notably, the strain sensitivity of the composite hydrogels is higher than that of most reported hydrogel sensors. Therefore, the composite hydrogels also can be employed as a real-time human motion sensor, capable of detecting and distinguishing various human movements. We believe that employing BNNFs as templates for crafting highly flexible and conductive nanofibers will foster the advancement of flexible conductive nanomaterials with comprehensive properties. Furthermore, the outstanding properties of the prepared composite hydrogels contribute to the ongoing development of conductive hydrogels with skin-like functionalities.

Skin-attachable conductive hydrogels are ideal candidates for the design of flexible and wearable electronics, and tremendous efforts are devoted to preparing multifunctional hydrogels. However, antibacterial ability and ultraviolet (UV)-blocking property are still essential yet rarely reported. In this study, a novel ionically conductive multifunctional polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel (PCT hydrogel) with transparency, adhesiveness, antibacterial activity, and UV-blocking ability simultaneously is fabricated via a facile one-pot strategy. In the hydrogel, PAAm chains form the backbone of PCT hydrogel, CS and TA endow hydrogel with antibacterial activity (>97%) and UV-blocking ability (>96%), respectively. More importantly, existing free ions also endue PCT hydrogel with conductivity (0.256 ± 0.005 S m −1 ) and strain sensitivity (GF > 3). The prepared PCT hydrogel-based strain sensors can effectively monitor various human movements, indicating their huge potential in soft robotics, human–machine interaction, and health-monitoring systems.
