The self-powered strain sensors based on piezoelectric and triboelectric principles have been widely reported in flexible electronics, but they cannot achieve static strain detection. Inspired by electrochemical reactions , we propose and construct an electrochemical self-powered strain sensor for static and dynamic strain detections. Specifically, the sensor is composed of Cu/Al electrodes, elastic core-spun yarn coated with LiCl-carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and latex tube encapsulation. Among them, Cu and Al electrodes are used for electrochemical reactions; Elastic core-spun yarn endows the sensor with excellent tensile performance; LiCl provides conductive ions in electrochemical reactions; CNTs with good conductivity not only reduce the resistance between Cu and Al electrodes, but also facilitate good resistance strain effect; Latex tube encapsulation inhibits the evaporation of water molecules in the electrolyte. The strain sensing performance of the sensor is evaluated based on the current response. The results show that the sensor has wide strain detection range (2–100 %) and good repeatability (1000 times). By analyzing the strain voltage and current responses, as well as the morphology characterization of the sensor, the strain response mechanism of the sensor has been clarified, which is controlled by electrochemical reactions and resistance strain effect. The static strain monitoring function of the sensor is verified by monitoring finger bending. Combined with machine learning, the sensor can be used for respiratory behavior recognition. This work fundamentally contributes to developing self-powered strain sensor with static and dynamic strain detections.

Ionogels have attracted significant interest as multifunctional flexible sensors owing to their ionic conductivity, flexibility, stability, and inherent conformability. However, the integration of multiple functions into an ionogels remains significantly challenging. Herein, via a one-step photopolymerization of a PIL in an IL solution, we synthesized multifunctional poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)/ionic liquid (IL) ionogels capable of detecting temperature and strain stimuli with minimal interference. The compatibility between PIL and IL imparts self-adhesive properties and rapid self-healing (82.4 % efficiency after 2 h). Furthermore, the PIL/IL sensor exhibited high response linearity for strain (0.987) and temperature (0.993), indicating that the temperature stimulus and the strain stimulus barely have influence on each other. These results demonstrate the potential of wearable electronic devices for human motion detection and temperature sensing.

Electronic skin (e-skin) is showing a huge potential in human–computer interaction, intelligent robots, human health, motion monitoring, etc. However, it is still challenging for e-skin to realize distinguishable detection of stretching strain, vertical pressure, and temperature through a simple noncoupling structure design. Here, a stretchable multimodal biomimetic e-skin was fabricated by integrating layer-by-layer self-assembled crumpled reduced graphene oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes film on natural rubber (RGO/MWCNTs@NR) as stretchable conductive electrodes and polyacrylamide/NaCl ionogel as a dielectric layer into an ionotropic capacitive mechanoreceptor. Unlike natural skin receptors, the sandwich-like stretchable ionogel mechanoreceptor possessed a distinct ionotropic capacitive behavior for strain and pressure detection. The results showed that the biomimetic e-skin displayed a negative capacitance change with superior stretchability (0–300%) and a high gauge factor of 0.27 in 180–300% strain, while exhibiting a normal positive piezo-capacitance behavior in vertical pressure range of 0–15 kPa with a maximal sensitivity of 1.759 kPa–1. Based on this feature, the biomimetic e-skin showed an excellent synchronous detection capability of planar strain and vertical pressure in practical wearable applications such as gesture recognition and grasping movement detection without a complicated mathematical or signal decoupling process. In addition, the biomimetic e-skin exhibited a quantifiable linear responsiveness to temperature from 20–90 °C with a temperature coefficient of 0.55%/°C. These intriguing properties gave the biomimetic e-skin the ability to perform a complete function similar to natural skin but beyond its performance for future wearable devices and artificial intelligence devices.

Electronic skin (e-skin) has the potential to detect large-scale strain, which is typically achieved by integrating multiple strain sensors into an array. However, the latency and limited resolution of sensing have hindered its large-scale sensing applications. Here, we have developed a high-resolution detection sensing system capable of detecting static and dynamic strain with a simple fabrication process by combining capacitive and mechanoluminescent (ML) sensor units. An elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite film doped with ZnS:Cu and BaTiO3(BT) particles are fabricated as the functional film of the capacitive sensor. In contrast, the transparent electrode was fabricated on the surface of the as-prepared film. By incorporating BT nanoparticles into the elastic substrate, the ML intensity of the ZnS:Cu was improved up to 2.89 times that without BT addition, and the sensitivity of the capacitive sensor was increased as well. The capacitive part of the sensor presented a GF of 0.9 and good stability, while the ML part exhibited excellent performance, making it suitable for both static and dynamic sensing. Furthermore, the strain sensor integrated by 10 × 10 sensing units is demonstrated to detect large-scale strain with high resolution. Moreover, finger joint strain distribution tracking is achieved by attaching the strain sensor unit to the finger joint. With these characteristics, the e-skin may have great potential for bio-motion monitoring and human-computer interaction applications.

Herein, a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based conductive composite hydrogel system coenhanced by clay and polydopamine-modified MXene was synthesized to achieve strain and temperature sensibility simultaneously. The noncovalently cross-linked network via MXene, clay, and polymer chains endowed the synthesized hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength at a break of 117 kPa and elongation at a break of 1723%). This hydrogel also exhibits strong adhesion and good electrical conductivity (0.13 S/m). Regarding the sensing properties, its temperature sensitivity is 2.749 °C–1, while its strain detection limit is as low as 0.05%. Based on the unique characteristics of the prepared hydrogel, the as-assembled sensor can detect stress and temperature simultaneously, exhibiting great application potential in human physiological monitoring.

As technology continues to advance, multifunctional flexible electronic devices for monitoring human health and managing thermal conditions have garnered considerable attention. Nevertheless, achieving a balance between a wide strain sensing range and high sensitivity remains a considerable challenge. Herein, PDA/PEBA/MWCNTs/rGO (PPMr) sensors were fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration of ultrasonically mixed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) loaded on polydopamine-modified PEBA nanofiber membranes. This sensor has a broad range of strain detection capabilities (0–127 % strain), high sensitivity (GF = 42), response/recovery times of 600/500 ms, and over 8000 cycles of stability. At the same time, this sensor also exhibits outstanding photothermal conversion capability (reaching 75.6 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 ), electrothermal conversion capability (up to 82.2 °C at 8 V), and excellent photothermal/electrothermal synergistic conversion capability (reaching 78.9 °C at 100 mW/cm 2 and 4 V). This strain sensor is noteworthy for its outstanding performance, as it can detect body movements across a wide range of strain, such as elbow joint movements, as well as subtle physiological signals like pulse waves. This capability highlights its significant potential for applications in human health monitoring and thermal management.

A gradient anisotropic cellulose hydrogel was prepared by the diffusion of CaCl 2 solution. The degree of orientation of the cellulose chains decreased along the ion diffusion direction, and the birefringence of the highly oriented area was up to 1.323×10 −4 . Importantly, we first propose and demonstrate the presence of sensitive region in the gradient anisotropy hydrogel. The sensitive region located in the order-disorder transition displayed large color variation with the optical path difference (R) range from 155 nm to 1200 nm, high sensitivity (1 % strain interval), low detection (minimum 1 % strain), good cycling ability of 50 times and frost resistance at −20℃. Based on this, the readable response colorimetric card was designed for micro-strain detection. The programmable Ca 2+ diffusion design made it convenient to fabricate cylindrical and tubular hydrogels. This concept of sensitive region and this flexible strategy will broaden new horizons to materials that have excellent responsive properties for optical applications, sensors and multiscale bionics architectures.

This paper proposes a flexible curved sensor array (FCSA) for wind pressure monitoring on train bogies. The fabricated FCSA made of composite conductive materials integrates strain and pressure sensing modules. The preparation ratio and internal conductive structure of the sensor are optimized to improve its strain detection precision and sensitivity. The accuracy of wind pressure monitoring data reaches 97 %, which is higher than current sensors. Experimental results show that the composite with hybrid filler of 1.75 wt % carbon black (CB) exhibits highly strain sensitive characteristics of good linearity, high accuracy, excellent stretchability (>50 %), high gauge factor (GF ∼10.2) and excellent durability over 500 stretching-releasing cycles under 30N. The designed FCSA demonstrates the practicality and effectiveness for wind pressure detection of train bogie, and provides a potential option for structural health monitoring (SHM) under large deformation.

Smart materials responsible to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, solvents, light, redox agents, and mechanical or electric/magnetic field, have drawn considerable attention recently. Herein, we described a novel rhodamine (Rh) mechanophore-based mechanoresponsive micellar hydrogel with excellent mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent properties. We found with astonishment that, due to the favorable activation of rhodamine spirolactam in the presence of water, together with the stress concentration effect, the mechanoresponsive sensitivity of this hydrogel was enhanced significantly. As a result, the stress needed to trigger the mechanochromic property of Rh in the hydrogel was much lower than in its native polymer matrix reported before. The hydrogel based on Rh, therefore, exhibited excellent mechanochromic property even at lower stress. Moreover, due to the reversibility of color on/off, the hydrogel based on Rh could be used as a reusable and erasable material for color printing/writing. Of peculiar importance is that the hydrogel could emit highly bright fluorescence under sufficient stress or strain. This suggested that the stress/strain of hydrogel could be detected quantificationally and effectively by the fluorescence data. We also found that the hydrogel could respond to acid/alkali and exhibited outstanding properties of acidichromism and acidifluorochromism. Up to now, hydrogels with such excellent mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent properties have rarely been reported. Our efforts may be essentially beneficial to the design of the mechanochromic and mechanofluorescent hydrogels with enhanced mechanoresponsive sensitivity, fostering their potential applications in a number of fields such as damage or stress/strain detection. Keywords:rhodamine mechanophore;micellar hydrogel;mechanochromic;mechanofluorescent;mechanoresponsive sensitivity;stress/strain detection

Flexible strain sensors have been widely used in wearable electronics. However, the fabrication of flexible strain sensors with a large strain detection range, high sensitivity, and negligible hysteresis remains a formidable challenge, even after enormous advancements in the field. Herein, a flexible microfluidic strain sensor was fabricated by filling poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate–MXene–gold (PEDOT:PSS–MXene–Au) nanocomposites into microchannels in an elastic matrix. Owing to the unique properties of the nanofiller and Ecoflex elastomer microchannel, the microfluidic strain sensor detected a strain of 0%–500% with low hysteresis (2.4%), high sensitivity (guage factor = 25.4), short response times (∼86 ms), and good durability. Moreover, the flexible microfluidic sensor was used to detect various physiological signals and human activities, control a mechanical hand, and capture hand motions in real time. As demonstrated by its good performance, the proposed flexible microfluidic sensor holds great potential in applications such as wearable electronics, physiological signal monitoring and human–machine interactions.

This work reports on a highly sensitive and temperature-adaptive gellan gum/sodium lignosulfonate-modified hydrogel (PGL hydrogel) aimed at developing materials suitable for wearable sensors. By introducing gellan gum into the polyacrylamide (PAM) matrix, an interpenetrating network structure was formed, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Subsequent post-treatment with a sodium lignosulfonate solution further improved the conductivity of the hydrogel to 0.48 S/m. As the core functional material for wearable sensors, this hydrogel exhibits a wide strain detection capability of approximately 400%, with a gauge factor ( GF ) of 3.79 in the 0–200% strain range and 5.16 in the 200–400% range. Notably, the material maintains synergistic stability in mechanical properties, conductivity, sensitivity, and response time across a wide temperature range of –20–60 ℃. It provides robust support for its use as a stable and sensitive strain sensor. Graphical

Carbon fiber-based sensors have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation wearable electronics due to their flexibility and lightweight characteristics. However, conventional manufacturing methods relying on energy- and time-intensive high-temperature processes hinder the fabrication of patterned devices. Here, we demonstrate a novel fiber-based anisotropic strain sensor fabricated through a low-temperature laser carbonization technique combined with oriented fiber membranes. The proposed device exhibits exceptional performance metrics: a bending sensitivity of −166.61 (0.08–0.66 % strain range), ultrafast response/recovery time of 42/42 ms, and remarkable durability over 10,000 cyclic bending tests. Particularly, the directional sensing capability enables precise 0–90° bending angle detection and motion de-modulation, overcoming the isotropic limitation of conventional carbon fiber sensors. This work establishes a scalable manufacturing strategy for energy-efficient production of patterned electronic textiles, showing significant potential for human-machine interfaces and smart wearable applications.
