High-efficiency preparation of large-sized MXene nanosheets for flexible piezoresistive sensors with high sensitivity and wide strain range

Fan Zhang,Xiaobo Zhang,Tingting Yang,Kaixiang Shi,Ying Han,Xiaolei Song,Hongyan Yao,Ying Song

The concurrent attainment of high sensitivity and broad response range in piezoresistive sensors remains a critical challenge. While single-layer MXene characterized by large interlayer spacing, high specific surface area, flexibility, and superior electrical conductivity—holds promise for enhancing sensor performance, conventional synthesis methods suffer from inefficient exfoliation and low yield, hindering practical applications. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to synthesize single-layer MXene nanosheets via a mixed-acid (HF/HCl) etching system with lithium chloride (LiCl) as an intercalation agent. This approach achieved remarkable exfoliation efficiency (up to 70 %) while endowing MXene with a wrinkled morphology and an expanded specific surface area. Subsequently, MXene/polyimide (MXene/PI) composite aerogels were fabricated by integrating MXene nanosheets into a PI flexible substrate, serving as pressure-sensitive materials. The composite aerogels exhibited a highly aligned lamellar microstructure, synergizing MXene’s conductivity with PI’s flexibility, thereby significantly improving both sensitivity and response range. At an optimal MXene content of 14 %, the sensor demonstrated exceptional performance: a wide response range (0–27.1 kPa) and a high sensitivity of 2.65 kPa −1 under a large applied stress of 27.1 kPa, surpassing existing counterparts. Further applications revealed the sensor’s capability in precisely detecting physiological signals (e.g, finger, wrist, and elbow movements). Additionally, the composite aerogel showcased multifunctionality, including superior thermal insulation (>90 % heat retention), efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding (45 dB at 10 GHz), and oil–water separation efficacy (>98 % for non-polar solvents). These findings highlight the material’s potential in wearable electronics, environmental remediation, and EMI shielding technologies, paving the way for next-generation multifunctional sensors.

Flexible Strain Sensor Based on AgNWs/MXene/SEBS with High Sensitivity and Wide Strain Range

Yao Yubo,Dai Hongfei,Ji Mengnan,Han Ying,Jiang Bo,Cheng Chi,Song Xiaolei,Song Ying,Wu Guangfeng

Flexible strain sensors that combine high sensitivity and wide range are important for developing wearable electronics. In this paper, AgNWs/MXene/SEBS flexible strain sensor with high sensitivity and wide strain range was prepared using a thermoplastic elastomer (styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene) SEBS as the polymer matrix and AgNWs and MXene as the composite conductive fillers. The sensitivity of the AgNWs/MXene/SEBS sensor is significantly higher than that of the AgNWs/SEBS and MXene/SEBS sensors based on a single conductive filler. At 100% strain, the AgNWs/MXene/SEBS sensor has a sensitivity of 176.25. The sensor detects small strains of 0.5-5% as well as large strains of 5–50% with high linearity. The sensors remained stable after 200 cycles. The AgNWs/MXene/SEBS tensile sensors were subjected to array testing and finger bending recognition, and the sensors have promising applications in human motion monitoring. Graphical Abstract

A Novel Strategy to Control the Effective Strain Range for Yarn-Based Resistive Strain Sensor by Braiding Technology

Huang Fei,Huang Chen,Meng Fenye,Aw Kean Chin,Yan Xiong,Hu Jiyong

Yarn-based strain sensors are breaking the boundaries between flexible wearable electronics and smart clothing due to their unique functionality and weavability. The sensing strain range of most flexible strain sensors is less than its tensile range, and it is easy to exceed its sensing strain range during use, resulting in unstable performance and failure of the sensor. An effective-strain-range-controllable and wear-resistant yarn strain sensor was developed with a core-sheath braided structure with the sensing yarn as the core and the braided yarn as the shell. This design strain allows for control over the effective strain range by adjusting the core sensing yarn’s pre-stretch ratio and the outer braided layer’s structure. This prevents damage to the conductive network and sensor failure caused by excessive stretching during use. The sensitivity, linear sensing range, and hysteresis of the braided strain sensors are effectively adjusted by changing the braiding yarns’ braiding angle and the sensing yarn’s pre-stretch ratio. Additionally, the sensors’ appearance and texture can be customized by changing the colour and material of the braiding yarns, allowing these sensors to integrate seamlessly with the garment and enhance their aesthetics. Furthermore, when combined with elastic fabric bands, these sensors can be attached to various parts of the human body to monitor physiological information, such as respiration and movement. The braided structure design presents a versatile strategy that could be applied to other types of strain sensors, achieving stability, durability, and aesthetics simultaneously.

A method for simultaneously preparing crack-based and composite-based PDMS strain sensors by mixing AgNWs and Ag microparticles

Kunpeng Gao,Qianjin Wang,Junqi Tang,Yingkai Liu

Resistive-type strain sensors have been widely studied because of their high precision and convenient measurement. But the high sensitivity and large strain range of this kind of sensor conflict with each other. It is difficult to prepare a sensor with high sensitivity and a large tensile range at the same time. Here, we propose a method to use AgNWs/Ag microparticles (AgMPs) and PDMS to simultaneously manufacture two strain sensors with different principles, a crack-based sensor and a composite-based sensor. On the one hand, the crack-based sensor has a low detection limit of 0.5% strain and high sensitivity of GF ≈ 90 at the strain of 0 ∼ 50%. It is suitable for the detection of small strains and can detect throat vibration when speaking. On the other hand, the composite-based sensor has a large strain range of 0 ∼ 240% and excellent stability. After 1000 cycles of stretching-releasing at 50% strain, the resistance change rate remains unchanged. It is suitable for the detection of large strains. Moreover, the sensitivity and working range of the composite-based sensor can be adjusted by changing the ratio and total amount of AgNWs/AgMPs composites. It can accurately monitor the different bending angles of the elbow joint and a people's walking status and pace. The strain sensor prepared by this method has great practical value in wearable devices and electronic skin.

Durable TPU/PDA/MXene Fiber-Based Strain Sensors with High Strain Range and Sensitivity

Hengyi Cheng,Xun Zhang,Tao Zhang,Yixiang Chen,Dan Yu,Wei Wang

Graphical The figure shows the preparation process of TPU/PDA/MXene composite fibers. TPU fibers were first prepared by dissolving TPU particles in a certain amount of DMF solution, but since TPU fibers are inherently non-conductive, it was necessary to surface modify the TPU fibers. PDA was polymerized in situ on the fiber surface and then placed in MXene solution for ultrasonication to obtain composite fibers. With the development of the ageing society, wearable strain sensors have great application prospects in the fields of health detection, artificial intelligence, and motion recognition. However, traditional forms of film-like strain sensors suffer from low sensitivity, adhesion, and impermeability during use, which severely limit their practical applications. To overcome these problems, we propose a strategy to fabricate polyurethane/polydopamine/MXene (TPU/PDA/MXene) composite fibers by wet spinning. Furthermore, the outside is wrapped with (PDMS), giving mechanical strength and chemical resistance. Through a simple and low-cost wet spinning process, TPU/PDA/MXene fibers are achieved in the preparation of flexible strain sensors, and they can be woven into various forms with good flexibility and comfort according to practical needs. The results indicated that the prepared flexible strain sensor exhibits a high gauge factor (GF) of 57.15 over a large strain range (300 %), which are superior to those of many fiber-based sensors. Their application properties were also measured by attaching them to fingers, wrists and knees, showing high sensitivity, mechanical durability and chemical stability, and has great potential for wearable strain sensors and flexible strain sensors in complex environments.

Highly conductive and adhesive wearable sensors based on PVA/PAM/SF/PEDOT:PSS double network hydrogels

Yang Jiaqi,Fan Yanli,Xiong Xinliang,Jiang Qifeng,Li Ping,Jian Jie,Chen Longcong

In recent years, hydrogels had a wide range of applications in wearable devices, human health monitoring, or implantable sensors because of their good properties such as stretchability, conductivity, frost resistance, and transparency. However, the simultaneous integration of excellent mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity in a hydrogel sample still needs to be improved. In this work, silk fibroin (SF) and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were introduced into a poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic amide) (PVA/PAM) double-network hydrogel to prepare PVA/PAM/SF/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel electrolytes via a one-pot method. Adding SF also enhances the mechanical properties of the hydrogel, making it three times stronger than the PVA/PAM double-network hydrogel. The hydrogel is versatile, with a strain range of 1–300%, making it an ideal resistive sensor for monitoring body pressure. More importantly, due to the hydrogel’s adhesion strength of approximately 665.8 kPa, the hydrogel can adhere to other surfaces during the detection process, significantly reducing the signal loss due to insufficient adhesion. In addition, the hydrogel also exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, can sensitively detect human limb movement, and can be applied to flexible electronic products such as electronic skin and soft robots.

Superhydrophobic conductive rubber band with synergistic dual conductive layer for wide-range sensitive strain sensor

Hongling Sun,Yibing Bu,Hu Liu,Jingwen Wang,Wenke Yang,Qianming Li,Zhanhu Guo,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Wearable electronic devices have received increasing interests because of their excellent flexibility, stretchability, and human friendliness. As the core components, flexible strain sensors integrated with wide working range, high sensitivity, and environment stability, especially in moisture or corrosive environments, remain a huge challenge. Herein, synergistic carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) dual conductive layer decorated elastic rubber band (RB) was successfully developed and treated with hydrophobic fumed silica (Hf-SiO 2 ) for preparing superhydrophobic strain sensor. As expected, stable entangled CNTs layer and ultrasensitive microcracked rGO layer endow the sensor with extremely low detection limit (0.1%), high sensitivity (gauge factor is 685.3 at 482% strain), wide workable strain range (0–482%), fast response/recovery (200 ms/200 ms) and favorable reliability and reproducibility over 1000 cycles. Besides, the constructed Hf-SiO 2 coating also makes the sensor exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning property, and corrosion-resistance. As a proof of concept, our prepared high-performance strain sensor can realize the full-range monitoring of human motions and physiological signals even in the water environment, including pulse, vocalization, joint bending, running, and gesture recognition. Interestingly, it can also be knitted into a tactile electronic textile for spatial pressure distribution measurement. Thus, this study provides a universal technique for the preparation of high-performance strain sensors with great potential applications in the field of next-generation intelligent wearable electronics.

Design of super stretchability, rapid self-healing, and self-adhesion hydrogel based on starch for wearable strain sensors

Yanyan Li,Xin Wen,Xiaoru Li,Muhammad Zahid,Hongliang Wang,Jian Zhang

Since hydrogels are conductive, easily engineered, and sufficiently flexible to imitate the mechanical properties of human skin, they are seen as potential options for wearable strain sensors. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare a hydrogel through simple and straightforward methods that integrate excellent stretchability, ionic conductivity, toughness, self-adhesion, and self-healing. Herein, an acrylamide/3-acrylamide phenylboronic acid cross-linked network is modified to produce a semi-interpenetrating cross-linked hydrogel in just one easy step by adding starch. The prepared hydrogel contains dynamic boronic ester bonds and hydrogen bonds, which endow the exceptional stretchability (5769–13,976 %, 20–50 wt%), ideal transmittance (>90 %), self-adhesiveness (0.636 ± 0.060 kPa, 30 wt%), and self-healing properties. Notably, the self-healing process is completed instantly, achieving a healing strength of up to 81.21 %. Additionally, the aforementioned hydrogel exhibits a broad working strain range (≈ 500 %) and high sensitivity (gauge factor = 1.99) as a strain sensor, allowing it to record and track human actions precisely. This work provides a novel approach to synthesizing hydrogels with optimal overall mechanical characteristics, with the potential to facilitate the development of wearable strain sensing system based on hydrogels for real-world applications.

Flexible and robust polyaniline/cross-linked collagen sponge with fibrils network structure as a piezoresistive sensing material

Lele Liu,Zihao Ai,Xinyuan Zhang,Keyong Tang,Ying Pei

The polyaniline/cross-linked collagen sponge (PANI/CCS) was synthesized by polymerizing PANI onto the collagen skeleton using mesoscopic collagen fibrils (CFs) as building blocks, serving as a piezoresistive sensing material. The structure and morphology of PANI/CCS were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermal analysis (TA). The mechanical properties of PANI/CCS could be controlled by adjusting the CFs content and polymerization conditions. PANI/CCS treated with pure water exhibited exceptional compressive elasticity under 1000 compression cycles, demonstrating a wide strain range (0–85 %), rapid response time (200 ms), recovery time (90 ms), and high sensitivity (6.72 at 40–50 % strain). The treatment of the ionic liquid further improved the elasticity and the strain sensing range (0–95 %). The presence of PANI nanoparticles and mesoscopic collagen fibrils imparted antibacterial properties, stability in solvents, and biodegradability to PANI/CCS. Utilizing PANI/CCS as a piezoresistive sensing material enabled monitoring human movement behavior through the assembled sensor, showing significant potential for flexible wearable devices.

Development and properties of biodegradable PBAT/PPy/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors

Huikai Nan,Chunhui Zhang,Jianhong Liu,Chengxue Li,Chunxiu Liu,Shuolei Wang,Yubing Dong

Conventional flexible sensor substrates often suffer from critical limitations, such as non-biodegradability, restricted elastic strain ranges, and vulnerability of exposed conductive functional layers. The development of flexible wearable strain sensors with biodegradability, high ductility, broad elastic strain ranges, and reusability is imperative. Here, the epoxidized soybean oil (ESO)/tannic acid (TA)/triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC)/polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) (ETTPBAT) fibers with significantly expanded elastic strain capability were synthesized via melt spinning and UV irradiation techniques, and the PBAT/polypyrrole (PPy)/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors were fabricated via in-situ polymerization, twisting, and encapsulation processes. The effects of UV irradiation duration, polymerization time, and p -toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate ( p -TSA) dopant concentration on the mechanical properties, thermodynamic characteristics, sensing performance, and electrothermal conversion capabilities of the PBAT/PPy/ETTPBAT yarn strain sensors were systematically investigated. The prepared biodegradable PBAT-based strain sensors have stable sensing performance and larger elastic strain range, which is valuable for enhancing the performance and application of biodegradable polymer-based strain sensors.

Chitosan-based double cross-linked ionic hydrogels as a strain and pressure sensor with broad strain-range and high sensitivity

Xuemei Li,Zhiwei Liu,Yongri Liang,Li-Min Wang,Ying Dan Liu

A conductive hydrogel P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe3+ with double cross-linked networks was fabricated using a one-step polymerization by UV irradiation and a soaking process in Fe(NO3)3 solution. In this hydrogel, the rigid chain of chitosan (CS) and the soft chain of copolymer P(AAm-co-AA) with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) act as the backbone, among which large amounts of hydrogen bonds are formed by the amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups on the two polymers. Ferric irons (Fe3+) are introduced and form coordination interactions with carboxyl and amino groups of the polymers. The double cross-linked interactions in the system can enhance the tensile strength and toughness of the hydrogel. Thus, the prepared P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe3+ hybrid network hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties in many aspects: a strength of up to 550 kPa, a broad strain-range up to 800%, fast self-recovery ability (30 min), and low hysteresis strain (<100%). The conductive hydrogel demonstrates high strain sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 6.6 at a strain of 700%) as a flexible sensor. Human movements (for example, finger bending, vocal cord vibration, and other human activities) can be sensitively detected using the P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe3+ hydrogel sensor.
