Nonrubber components (NRCs) play an important role in the outstanding mechanical property of natural rubber (NR). The main inositol component of NRCs in natural rubber latex (NRL) is l -quebrachitol. In this study, the influence of l -quebrachitol on the properties of centrifuged natural rubber (CNR) was investigated. The NRL was centrifuged twice to remove most of the NRCs. After that, l -quebrachitol was added in the latex with per hundreds of rubber (phr) vary from 0% to 0.8%, and the vulcanized CNR were prepared. It is shown that the properties of vulcanized CNR were greatly changed, with T
90 reduced from 19 to 15 min, the tensile strength increased from 5 to 9 MPa, T
g reduced by about 2°C, and the ability for strain-induced crystallization was enhanced. It was proved by FTIR results that l -quebrachitol was linked to the CNR crosslinking network with ester bond.

The coagulation process significantly influences the molecular architecture of natural rubber (NR), particularly the formation of long-chain branching (LCB), which plays a crucial role in determining its mechanical properties and strain-induced crystallization (SIC) behavior. This study explores how three distinct coagulation methods — acid-induced, natural, and enzymatic coagulation — shape the LCB structure of NR, and further investigates their cascading effects on the crosslinking network, mechanical performance, and SIC characteristics. Through an integrated approach combining Rubber Processing Analyzer measurements, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), crosslink network characterization, and mechanical testing, we found that varying coagulation processes yield NR with distinct LCB features, and LCB exhibits a linear correlation with Mooney viscosity during mastication. A higher LCB index in both raw rubber and compounds was observed to facilitate the initiation of SIC at lower strains, thereby enhancing NR’s self-reinforcement effect. Among the samples, enzyme-coagulated NR exhibits the highest LCB index; its tensile strength (31.54 ± 0.46 MPa) and crystallinity (10.01 %) outperform those of acid-coagulated (24.81 ± 0.31 MPa, 9.38 %) and naturally coagulated (23.47 ± 0.56 MPa, 7.87 %) samples. Furthermore, this work clarifies the regulatory role of coagulation processes in NR network evolution and establishes quantitative relationships between crystallization at a strain of 7, tensile performance, and the LCB index of raw rubber and compounds, offering novel insights into NR molecular design. These findings highlight the pivotal role of coagulation methods in tailoring NR’s LCB structure, paving the way for performance optimization in high-demand applications such as tire manufacturing and industrial elastomer production.

Conventional strategies for enhancing the mechanical robustness of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) rely on hard-segment engineering, such as introducing dynamic covalent/noncovalent bonds or optimizing chain extenders, yet overlook the critical role of soft segments in governing microphase separation. Here, we present a soft-segment-regulated design that leverages crystallizable polyols to synergize hierarchical hydrogen bonding, tunable microphase separation, and strain-induced crystallization (SIC), achieving excellent mechanical performance. Among them, PU–PTMEG exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 75.6 MPa, a toughness of 337.4 MJ m−3, and a fracture energy of 131.6 kJ mol−1—values that surpass those of many metals and alloys. Furthermore, its true fracture stress reaches 1.03 GPa, comparable to that of spider silk, while its toughness is approximately 2.3 times higher, demonstrating a remarkable combination of strength and toughness. The dynamic yet dense hydrogen bond network, strategically balanced in both strength and reversibility, enables efficient energy dissipation during deformation, while the SIC activated by aligned soft segments facilitates elastomer self-reinforcement. Finally, by combining the antibacterial properties endowed by intrinsic acylhydrazine groups (bacterial survival rate <20%) and the introduction of rigid polyurethane foam as an acoustic impedance modifier, high-contrast ultrasound imaging of TPU wires has been successfully achieved.

The enzymatic coagulation process has emerged as a promising natural rubber (NR) processing method because of its high efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, the structural evolution of enzyme-treated NR during storage and its consequent effects on the properties of NR remain unclear to date, which restricts the practical application of the enzymatic coagulation process for the processing of NR. In this work, peptidase-treated raw NR was subjected to accelerated storage conditions. It was observed that during the storage process, dynamic imine bonds (–C= N –) were formed through condensation reactions between the –NH 2 groups generated from peptidase-hydrolyzed proteins and the –CHO groups from the NR backbone. The formation of these dynamic imine bonds did not significantly deteriorate the processing characteristics or vulcanization performance of the peptidase-treated NR. Moreover, the tensile strength of vulcanized NR increased from 19.2 to 26.1 MPa, and its toughness increased from 30.5 to 41.3 J/cm 2 , demonstrating an obvious self-strengthening induced by storage. Mechanistic studies revealed that dynamic imine bonds not only dissipate energy efficiently but also promote strain-induced crystallization (SIC), thus endowing the resulting vulcanized NR with improved strength and toughness. This work presents a comprehensive study of the structure–performance relationships of peptidase-treated NR during storage.

The deformation mechanism of glycerol plasticized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with different hydrolyses (88%, 92%, 98%) at elevated temperatures (60–100 °C) was elucidated by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering. The vinyl acetate (VAc) in PVA acts as a non-crystalline chain defect, which significantly influences the plastic deformation and stretching-induced crystallization behavior of PVA. The key microstructural parameters of PVA during deformation, such as crystallinity ( χ c ), lateral crystallite size ( L ), and long period ( l ), in combination with the stress-strain curves, were obtained. The experimental results show that the deformation process of the plasticized PVA film present a three-stage evolution: (i) a plastic deformation zone. The plastic deformation of the crystallite occurs as evidenced by the apparent decrease in crystallinity and lamellar reorientation induced by stretching; (ii) the stress softening zone. The decreasing trend of crystallinity becomes slow, and the long period becomes smaller, which indicates that PVA crystallization is induced by stretching; and (iii) the strain-hardening zone. There is a synergistic effect between the crystallite destruction and formation. Further research reveals that a high temperature and low degree of alcoholysis favor the stretching-induced crystallization of PVA, while the system with a high degree of alcoholysis shows significant characteristics of preferred crystal growth.

Transparent and degradable polyurethane elastomers with high strength and toughness are in demand for various applications, such as tissue engineering and flexible electronics. However, designing specific chemical structures is challenging, and thus fabricating novel elastomers is sometimes unattainable. An effective approach to develop elastomers is through the introduction of sacrificial bonds, e.g. hydrogen bonds, to enhance their mechanical properties and toughness, which provide hidden lengths and hierarchical structures for energy dissipation. This study introduced a facile and efficient strategy by employing imidazolidinyl urea (IU) as a multiple hydrogen-bonding motif to fabricate transparent and degradable polyurethane elastomers (PHI) with superior breaking strength and excellent toughness. The resultant breaking strength and toughness reached up to 24.9 MPa and 168.2 MJ m−3, respectively. Additionally, the breaking strength increased to 49.9 MPa after the sample was pre-stretched to 600% strain due to strain-induced crystallization (SIC). Moreover, the PHI film with degradability and good biocompatibility showed potential application in post-operative anti-adhesion.
