Performance enhancement of silica filled natural rubber nanocomposites using organic deep eutectic solvent

Qiao Li,Hongda Meng,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Silica is an important filler of “green tires” while its dispersion in the aid of silane coupling agents emits volatile organic compounds during rubber compounding and its invariably agglomeration in nonpolar rubber matrices enhances strain softening . Herein a highly active deep eutectic solvent (DES), synthesized using stearic acid as hydrogen bond donor and tetrabutylammonium chloride as hydrogen bond acceptor, is used to tailor reinforcement and softening behaviors and to replace the silane coupling agents for preparing volatile organic compounds-free nanocomposites . The results show that DES can regulate the crosslinking network structure of rubber matrix and accelerate the vulcanization by reacting with non-rubber components in natural rubber (NR) and by improving the proportion of disulfidic linkage. Furthermore, DES is able to improve the dispersion of silica, crosslinking density of NR and the interfacial interaction between silica and NR, and slow down the thermo-oxidative aging behavior. It could also weaken the damping and softening accompanying Mullins effect for the nanocomposites vulcanizates at high strains. In comparison with silane , DES endows the nanocomposites with superior vulcanization and mechanical properties, providing guides to mediate the reinforcement and strain softening behaviors and manufacture high-performance “green tires” in an energy-efficient approach.

Impact of an oligomer deep eutectic solvent on structure and properties of natural rubber vulcanizates and their nanocomposites

Yan Qi,Junbiao Peng,Chunsheng Zhang,Danling Wang,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Rubber nanocomposites exhibit strain softening under large-amplitude oscillation shear and large-strain cyclic tension while the softening behaviors are hard to regulate in industry. Herein, an oligomer deep eutectic solvent (DES) synthesized from polyethyleneglycol and tetrabutylammonium bromide is used to mediate the vulcanization and softening behaviors of natural rubber (NR) gums and their nanocomposites. The results show that DES could accelerate NR vulcanization and improve crosslinking density. For the hydrophilic silica nanocomposites, DES could greatly reduce tan δ and weaken weak strain overshoot accompanying Payne and lower percentages damping accompanying Mullins effects. The effects in nanocomposites filled with hydrophilic/hydrophobic silica and carbon black are investigated and compared. The investigation provides a new way for tailoring elasticity and dissipation of vulcanizate nanocomposites filled with hydrophilic silica.

Rheology of ethylene-vinyl acetate composites tuned by crosslinked rubber particles and carbon nanotubes

Zhaopeng Hu,Xin Jiang,Benteng Liu,Qiao Li,Hongda Meng,Yihu Song,Yongzhong Bao,Qiang Zheng

Rheology of polymer composites is crucial for production efficiency and performance of final products. Investigated here is influence of crosslinked rubber particles (CRPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on rheology of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composites. Transmission electron microscopy shows that CNTs are enriched in the EVA phase and do not penetrate into the CRPs. The reinforcement profiles of CRPs and CNTs are analyzed with the aid of time-concentration superposition principle, indicating that the reinforcement effects of these fillers are additive. While CNTs intensify and accelerate strain softening, CRPs are able to delay and weaken this effect. The synchronous evaluation of electrical resistance and rheology reveals that the conductive and rheological percolation networks are not entirely equivalent. The addition of CRPs improves elasticity and rheological and electrical recoveries of CNTs-based composites. The findings suggest that the combination of the two fillers synergistically improves composite properties, offering a foundation for optimizing advanced processing and application requirements.

Effect of deep eutectic solvents on vulcanization kinetics and strain-softening behavior of natural rubber/styrene-butadiene rubber

Li Yang,Shihao Sun,Xiaofeng Yu,Zheng Xu,Yaobin Lu,Xuanyu Shi,Yihu Song,Danling Wang,Min Zuo,Qiang Zheng

Natural rubber/styrene-butadiene rubber (NR/SBR) blends are widely used as tyre sidewall compounds; however, discrepancies in vulcanization rates and the selective distribution of vulcanization additives in SBR and NR contribute to suboptimal dynamic properties. In this study, we propose a straightforward strategy to modulate the multi-scale structure in NR/SBR blends by incorporating an ionic liquid-like deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a novel reactive vulcanization agent. The addition of DES substantially enhances the dispersion of ZnO within NR/SBR blends, accelerates the vulcanization process of SBR and the NR/SBR blend and increases their crosslinking densities. Furthermore, DES interacts with the non-rubber components of NR, facilitating the vulcanization of NR. The impact of DES on the linear and non-linear rheological behavior of NR, SBR and NR/SBR vulcanizates is minimal, except for an enhancement in weak strain overshooting. The distribution of DES within NR/SBR blends can be manipulated by varying the mixing sequence of DES with NR and SBR, while selectively positioning DES within the SBR phase may synchronise the vulcanization rates of the NR/SBR blend, thereby improving tensile strength and reducing mechanical hysteresis. This approach may provide a viable method for producing NR/SBR blend products characterised by high strength and low hysteresis energy.

Constitutive behaviors of tough physical hydrogels with dynamic metal-coordinated bonds

Ji Lin,Si Yu Zheng,Rui Xiao,Jun Yin,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng,Jin Qian

Metal-coordination mediated physical hydrogels exhibit high strength/toughness and intriguing mechanical behaviors with the pronounced rate-dependent viscoelasticity and loading-path dependent strain softening. Also, the stress of the reloaded gels increases with more waiting time, indicating a self-healing effect. This paper aims to develop a constitutive model to capture these complex mechanical behaviors of the metal-coordination mediated physical hydrogels. The theoretical framework incorporates two main physical mechanisms: the microscopic kinetic dissociation/association of cross-links and inelastic conformational changes of gel networks. The model predictions agree well with the experimental data of gel responses under different scenarios, which simultaneously capture the time-dependent stress response, relaxation, hysteresis , self-healing behavior, as well as ultimate failure. The present work can provide theoretical guidance and methodological support for the design and practical applications of tough hydrogels mediated by metal-coordinated bonds as load-bearing materials.

A pseudo-elasticity theory to model the strain-softening behavior of tough hydrogels

Tongqing Lu,Zhongtong Wang,Jingda Tang,Wenlei Zhang,Tiejun Wang

Rubber-like soft materials can be modeled by the statistical behavior of polymer chains and the network theory within the framework of thermodynamics. For example, the freely jointed chain model describes the deformation behavior of a single chain and the eight-chain network model relates the chain behavior to the macroscopic deformation . The emerging soft hydrogel materials with superior toughness contain additional constituents rather than one polymer network and thus have complex interplays when subject to external forces. For the double-network hydrogels, the existence of a second sacrificial network, serving as a source of energy dissipation , makes the stress-stretch curves exhibit a strain-softening behavior, which cannot be modeled by the freely jointed chain model. In this work, we develop a constitutive model for the strain-softening behavior of tough hydrogels. We introduce an internal variable to the free energy function of a single chain and then map the deformation of chains to the macroscopic deformation of polymer network. We synthesize different kinds of tough hydrogels and conduct uniaxial tension experiments. We demonstrate that the present model has a wide range of tunability and is capable of modeling the quasi-static tension of tough hydrogels with different chemical compositions, the irreversible damage behavior of chemically crosslinked hydrogels, the recoverable behavior of physically crosslinked hydrogels, the Mullins effect and the rate-dependent behaviors. These results enrich the large deformation theory and extend the classical constitutive models to capture the new features in the emerging soft and tough materials.

Dynamic rheology of boundary ultra-lubricated hydrogels in frictional oscillation study

Lu Chen,Mingle Xu,Yue Zhao,Haojia Guo,Guorong Shan,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng,Miao Du

The sliding behavior of hydrogels, crucial for biomaterial development, is traditionally studied under steady shear. However, biological motions are typically dynamic and oscillatory. This work characterizes the lubrication performance of boundary ultra-lubricated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels based on their nonlinear viscoelastic response under oscillatory shear testing. Physically crosslinked PVA hydrogels, both fixed and slidable (interface-lubricated), were prepared. Their rheological behavior was investigated through large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests, with a focus on the effect of the surfactant Tween 80 (T80). Compared to fixed hydrogels, slidable hydrogels exhibited pronounced strain softening. The addition of T80 to the hydrogel bulk further enhanced this effect, including strong strain softening even at small strains and reducing the transition oscillation amplitude. Analysis of Lissajous-Bowditch plots using the parameters strain-hardening ratio ( S ) and shear-thickening ratio ( T ) revealed an intracycle strain stiffening and shear-thinning tendency in slidably lubricated hydrogels with increasing amplitude. It is proposed that T80 weakens the gel’s physical network via hydrogen bonding with surfactant micelles and prevents direct PVA-chain contact with the opposing surface. Furthermore, a proportional relationship between the steady coefficient of friction (CoF) and the energy dissipation ratio ( κ ), CoF ∝ 10 −2 . 0 κ , was established. This study demonstrates that the nonlinear viscoelastic parameter κ serves as an effective metric for evaluating hydrogel lubrication performance in dynamic rheological studies, providing deeper insight into frictional energy dissipation mechanisms.

Effect of a functional polymer on the rheology and microstructure of sodium alginate

Lei Du,Amin GhavamiNejad,Zhi-Chao Yan,Chandra Sekhar Biswas,Florian J. Stadler

Here, we report on the effect of functional copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-4-vinyl-phenylboronic acid) (NIBA) on the rheology and network structure formed by sodium alginate (SA) through linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity measurements. The hydrogel moduli at pH 3 increased with increasing NIBA addition, while the yield point decreased. Furthermore, these hydrogels showed strain-softening behavior, weak G″-overshoot marking the onset of nonlinearity, and good self-healing properties after large deformation. The zero-strain nonlinearity parameter (Q 0 ) was found to be more sensitive to NIBA-addition than the linear viscoelastic properties. The blends showed a clear peak in the startup test except for SA alone and the peak intensity increased with increasing NIBA-concentration. Finally, based on all data, gelation mechanism and interaction of SA and NIBA will be clarified.

Preparation of deep eutectic solvents based on metal ions and their influences on reinforcement and strain softening behaviors of silica filled natural rubber nanocomposites

Qiao Li,Benteng Liu,Zhaopeng Hu,Xin Jiang,Li Yang,Hongda Meng,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are used as green additives to reduce zinc oxide (ZnO) activator usages and prepare volatile organic compounds-free nanocomposites. Herein highly active DESs containing different metal ions (Zn 2+ , Sn 2+ , Mg 2+ and Fe 3+ ) are introduced into silica filled natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites for regulating the network structure of rubber matrix and tailoring elasticity, strength and softening behaviors of the nanocomposites. The results show that DESs react with proteins in NR, which introduces hydrogen bonding between DESs and non-rubber components in the crosslinked network. DES can improve dispersion of silica and enhance the interfacial interaction between silica and NR. In comparison with NR nanocomposites containing 2 phr (part per hundred parts of rubber) ZnO, the partial replacement of ZnO with DESs can not only improve vulcanization rate, tensile strength and crosslinking density but also weaken the Mullins effect by reducing dissipation and softening energy densities. Normalization of tensile deformation energy density reveals that stress and softening behaviors are related to crosslinking density of NR and strain amplification effect induced by silica. The investigation is enlightening for mediating the reinforcement and strain softening behaviors and paving the way for manufacture high-performance NR nanocomposites in an energy-saving efficient and ecofriendly approach.

Strain Softening of Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene Copolymers under Large Amplitude Oscillatory Shear for Clarifying Payne Effect in Rubbers and Their Nanocomposites

Fan Xin-Peng,Song Yi-Hu,Zheng Qiang,Wang Wan-Jie

To illustrate mechanisms of Payne effect in rubbers and their nanocomposites experiencing large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS), comparison studies were performed in styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) copolymers and their selectively crosslinked materials at temperatures below and above glass transition temperature of the polystyrene (PS) phase. It was found that under periodic dynamic shear, the strain softening is reversible when the polyisoprene (PI) phase, either crosslinked or not, is restricted by hard PS domains but it shows hysteresis once the PS domains disassociate. The strain softening can happen at the time scale of intrinsic Rouse relaxation of elastically active network strands. Critical stress of strain softening scales with number density of elastically active network strands, a simple relation being verified not only in the selectively crosslinked SIS copolymers but also in PI gum vulcanizates and carbon black filled PI compounds. Payne effect is traditionally used to term strain softening of highly filled rubber vulcanizates under LAOS deformation while evidenced herein is that the Payne effect of highly filled rubber vulcanizates shares the mechanism being common to the strain softening of SIS copolymers.

Influence of Liquid Isoprene Rubber on Strain Softening of Carbon Black Filled Isoprene Rubber Nanocomposites

Hou Feng-Yi,Song Yi-Hu,Zheng Qiang

The reinforcement of rubbers by nanoparticles is always accompanied with enhanced dissipation of mechanical energy upon large deformations. Methods for solving the contradiction between improving reinforcement and reducing energy dissipation for rubber nanocomposites have not been well developed. Herein carbon black (CB) filled isoprene rubber (IR)/liquid isoprene rubber (LR) blend nanocomposites with similar crosslink density ( v e ) are prepared and influence of LR on the strain softening behaviors including Payne effect under large amplitude shear deformation and Mullins effect under cyclic uniaxial deformation is investigated. The introduction of LR could improve the frequency sensitivity of loss modulus and reduce critical strain amplitude for Payne effect and loss modulus at the low amplitudes. Meanwhile, tuning v e and LR content allows reducing mechanical hysteresis in Mullins effect without significant impact on the mechanical performances. The investigation is illuminating for manufacturing nanocomposite vulcanizates with balanced mechanical hysteresis and reinforcement effect.

Influences of non-rubber components on the molecular network and viscoelasticity of natural rubber gum

Tingting Lao,Xinpeng Fan,Xiao Li,Yi Wang,Yanchan Wei,Shuangquan Liao

The molecular network of natural rubber (NR) gum is determined by the interparticle diffusion when NR latex coagulates. However, the roles played by the non-rubber components (NRC) species on the heterogeneous network structure and on the viscoelasticity of NR gum have not been throughly investigated. Here, the molecular relaxation was studied by linear rheology. In addition, the inter- and intra-cycle nonlinearities under large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) were studied for gums with extracted and added NRC. It was found that the high molecular weight free protein restricts the interdiffusion and improves the entanglement density, while the added lipid induces homogeneous distribution of NRC. The physical associations coming from free proteins increase the segment friction and retard the terminal relaxation. Onset of the strain softening was found to be induced by entangled network density. Both the elastic and viscous LAOS nonlinearities can be regulated by adjusting the NRC species. This work sheds light on the contributions of major NRC species on the network structure and nonlinear viscoelasticity of NR gum.
