Carbon fibers derived from spent cigarette filters for supporting ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterojunction toward enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Shuhui Yang,Kunqiang Wang,He Yu,Ying Huang,Peiyuan Guo,Chenxi Ye,He Wen,Gaotian Zhang,Dongxiang Luo,Feng Jiang,Liang Zhang

The research of waste recycling and clean energy are the key to sustainable development. To simultaneously accomplish the waste recycling and clean energy generation, carbon fibers (Fiber) prepared from the spent cigarette filters are utilized to promote the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency of a heterojunction photocatalyst. The spiral ladder morphology of Fiber supplies abundant loading sites for the ZnIn 2 S 4 /g-C3N 4 photocatalysts, allowing efficient charge separation. Detailed chemical and optical features of the samples are subsequently demonstrated by a combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared tests. X-ray photoelectron spectrum results reveal that a strong internal electric field was formed between Fiber and ZnIn 2 S 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , allowing sufficient driving force to extract the photo-generated electrons from the heterojunction photocatalyst. Gas chromatography monitors a ca . 37 % enhancement for H 2 evolution (322.41 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) compared with control group. This work suggests an attempt to exploit general wastes for promoting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Effectiveness of discarded cigarette butts derived carbonaceous adsorbent for heavy metals removal from water

Xing Zhang,Mingyue Yu,Yingying Li,Feifei Cheng,Yanqun Liu,Mingqi Gao,Guangliang Liu,Ligang Hu,Yong Liang

Disposed cigarette butt is one of the biggest solid, non-biodegradable wastes across the world. Cigarette butts (CBs) made of cellulose acetate are good candidates for the initial raw materials of carbon materials synthesis, providing a possible way for waste CBs recycling. Herein a carbonaceous adsorbent derived from waste CBs was prepared for the heavy metals removal from aqueous solution. The product activated at 500 °C has a maximum adsorption capacity for lead ions , which has a favorable balance of high specific surface area and abundant O-containing functional groups, facilitating the adsorption of heavy metals ions . The adsorption experiments showed that the pH of the solution played a pivotal role in the adsorption of heavy metals by CBs-derived activated carbons and the optimal pH for the adsorption was around 5. Effective adsorption of chromium (Cr 3+ ), cobalt (Co 2+ ), nickel (Ni 2+ ), lead (Pb 2+ ) and cadmium (Cd 2+ ) demonstrated that the prepared materials can be used for multiple heavy metal ions removal. The prepared materials were able to adsorb Pb 2+ within ten minutes, and the adsorption process can be well described by the pseudo-second order model, indicating that the chemical adsorption is the rate determining step for the adsorption process. The equilibrium data followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the corresponding maximum adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ was 249.3 mg g −1 . Considering the merits of low cost, easy synthesis pathway and excellent removal ability of heavy metals, CBs-derived carbonaceous adsorbent exhibits potential application in the fields of heavy metal contaminated water treatment.

High efficiency pyrolysis of used cigarette filters for ester-rich bio-oil through microwave-assisted heating

Wenliang Wang,Min Wang,Jiale Huang,Xinping Li,Liping Cai,Sheldon Q. Shi,Yong Cui,Lei Chen,Yonghao Ni

As a type of solid waste, the used cigarette filters (UCF) were utilized to produce ester-rich bio-oil via a cleaner production process, namely, microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP). The pyrolysis efficiency was significantly enhanced owing to the high heating rate under MAP conditions with assistance of microwave absorber silicon carbide (SiC) in reactor and adding methanol into N 2 carrier gas. Compared with the traditional tubular muffle furnace heating method yielding 0% of bio-oil, the MAP heating method obtained 29.17% of bio-oil from UCF. The bio-oil yield from UCF increased from 29.17% to 46.71% due to the introduction of methanol. Results of the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry showed that esters were the main components in the bio-oils (over 40%), especially of methyl acetate (over 12%). The aromatic compounds of phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also produced from the MAP of UCF. The bio-char from MAP of UCF exhibited the mesoporous property (e.g., over 500 m 2 /g of specific surface area). It is expected to produce over 350000 metric tons ester-rich bio-oil if the proposed technology can be scaled up globally. It will be a preeminent contribution for the conversion of UCF to the cleaner production and our environments.

Novel and multifunctional adsorbent fabricated by Zeolitic imidazolate framworks-8 and waste cigarette filters for wastewater treatment: Effective adsorption and photocatalysis

Qingling Zhang,Youliang Cheng,Changqing Fang,Jiayu Shi,Jing Chen,Hanzhi Han

Cellulose based aerogels for water purification have attracted intensive attentions due to the high porosity and biodegradability . However, the low adsorption capacity and poor adsorption efficiency restrain its practical application in this field. In this work, we synthesized a series of zeolitic imidazolate framworks-8 (ZIF-8) decorated waste cellulose aerogels through a facile blending method using waste cigarette filters and NaOH/urea as cellulose resources and a green solvent , respectively. These results showed that ZIF-8 can improve the thermal stability and increase the specific surface area of cellulose aerogels effectively. Furthermore, the highest specific surface area for as-prepared waste cellulose/ZIF-8 aerogels reached to 1035 m 2  ·g −1 . They exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 10.31 mg ·g −1 and a strong photocatalytic activity for methylene blue , which can degrade methylene blue completely within 2 h under UV light. In addition, these waste cellulose/ZIF-8 aerogels had a good recycle-ability, and the degradation rate can maintain above 84% after 5 cycles. Thus, as-prepared waste cellulose/ZIF-8 aerogels can be applied in water purification as multifunctional adsorbents with good adsorption-photocatalytic performance.

Construction of novel regenerated cellulose based foam derived from waste cigarette filters as effective oil adsorbent

Qingling Zhang,Youliang Cheng,Changqing Fang,Jiayu Shi

The reuse of waste cigarette filters is helpful to save resources and protect environment, and cellulose based functional materials can be applied in wastewater treatment due to the high porosity. Therefore, a novel kind of cellulose foams were fabricated by using waste cigarette filters and polyvinyl alcohol via a lyophilization technology and hydrophobicity modification in this work. As-prepared foams possessed an ultra-low density and high specific surface area (up to 40 m 2 g −1 ). After the hydrophobicity modification, the cellulose foam exhibited a water contact angle of 91.9° and 126.2° on external surface and cross section, which showed a superior oil adsorption capacity of 14 g g −1 . These developed cellulose foams have a low cost, good hydrophobicity and high adsorption capacity for oil as a promising absorbent, realizing the conversion of waste into high-value products successfully.

Waste cigarette butts based super-hygroscopic photothermal materials for atmospheric water harvesting and solar-driven undrinkable water purification

Bin Shang,Mengyao Zhu,Zongwei Wang,Junhao Chen,Xiang Fu,Huiyu Yang,Ziwei Deng,Pei Lyu,Jiehao Du,Dongzhi Chen,Shaojin Gu,Xin Liu

The worsening of the freshwater crisis undoubtedly poses great challenges to the normal production and life of human beings. Developing multifunctional materials that are capable of both atmospheric water harvesting and undrinkable water purification is highly desirable for freshwater production but is rare. In this study, a super-hygroscopic photothermal material (WCBs@SA/MNPs/MOFs) composed of environmentally polluting waste cigarette butts (WCBs), sodium alginate (SA), metal–organic framework-Zr (MOF-801) and melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) was successfully fabricated. Benefiting from the simultaneous loading of moisture-absorbing MOF-801 and photothermal MNPs into the porous structure of WCBs, freshwater production consisting of efficient atmospheric water harvesting (daily water production of ∼ 1.41 L kg −1 at low relative humidity of 20 % and 5.42 L kg −1 at higher relative humidity of 80 %, respectively) and eco-friendly solar-driven undrinkable water purification (water evaporation rate ∼ 2.72 kg m -2 h −1 , 1 kW m −2 ) can be realized concurrently. We believe this research not only mitigates environmental pollution caused by discarded cigarette butts and enhances their economic value, but also expands the options for freshwater production with multiple positive implications.

Eco-friendly and recyclable evaporator based on discarded cigarette filters for high-efficiency and stable solar desalination

Gong Haoran,Chen Ze,Ge Can,Liu Yingcun,Li Wan,Le Pengtao,Xu Weilin,Xu Duo,Liu Keshuai

Solar steam generation is a promising technology to realize efficient and green desalination with a minimized carbon footprint. Discarded cigarette filters (CFs) cause significant harm to the environment but have good recycling potential for solar steam generation. In this study, an efficient thermally-positioned material (AC-CF), which uses renewable cellulose acetate CFs and an acetylene carbon black (AC) coating as an absorber, was developed for application as a solar steam generator. The AC-CF exhibited superhydrophilic characteristics and extensive solar absorption (approximately 100%). These properties enable the resulting AC-CF to exhibit rapid water transport and a strong photothermal conversion ability, with an outstanding evaporation rate of 1.81 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun illumination. The evaporator can remove most impurities and dye molecules during outdoor operation. Subsequently, the AC-CF evaporator was dissolved and recycled using N, N-dimethylformamide, and the recycling method yielded good results. This method for preparing absorbers reduces manufacturing costs and guides the potential practical application of recycled polymer resources using discarded CFs.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by recycling of discarded cigarette filters: Selective degradation of contaminants

Sixian Huang,Tianyou Hu,Penghui Shi,Guohua Zhao,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu

Background The conversion of waste biomass into multi-hole carbon materials is an effective way in recent years. A new type of biochar was prepared by one-step calcination method by utilizing used cigarette filter (UCF) as raw material. In addition, we investigated the catalytic degradation properties of UCF, as well as the degradation mechanism. Methods The catalytic degradation properties of the material were verified by degradation experiments. The morphology of the material, and the microstructural state, were analyzed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and HRTEM (High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy). Using Raman, XRD (X-ray diffraction), BET, XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) studied the structure and chemical composition of the material. The degradation mechanism was analyzed by quenching experiments and EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance), XPS. Significant findings The first, UCF completely removed 0.01 g L −1 Rhodamine B within 80 min. And, degradation rate of Rhodamine B is as high as 95% within 20 min. Some defects were observed, and the dominant microporous structures and high specific surface area were present. The heteroatom in the UCF effectively activated the sp 2 -hybridized carbon crystal lattice, leading to the creation of more activation sites in UCF. Different carbide temperatures also affected the degree of material graphitization, and UCF (700 °C) had rich defects and larger porous structures. Besides, Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments showed that UCF degradation systems acted via free and non-radical pathways. The mechanism of catalytic degradation and the reasonable source of heterogeneous atoms at the catalytic site were also proposed. The use of the discarded cigarette filter as a low-cost catalyst for persulfate has great potential.

Magnetic porous biochar as a renewable and highly effective adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

Yang Hucheng,Yu Hao,Wang Jiahao,Ning Tao,Chen Pin,Yu Jing,Di Siyuan,Zhu Shukui

In this study, discarded cigarette butts were used as a precursor for preparing magnetic porous biochar with a facile annealing method. The magnetic porous biochar was applied to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for TCH, which was much higher than various similar materials reported. At the same time, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms of TCH were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order models and Freundlich models, respectively. The thermodynamics experiments proved that the adsorption on magnetic porous biochar was an endothermic reaction. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was explored, and the outstanding adsorption ability was mainly dependent on the pore filling effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interaction. By using the magnetic porous biochar, the real water samples were treated and high removal efficiency to TCH was obtained. What’s more, the excellent reusability endowed the magnetic porous biochar with great potential as adsorbents for practical application.

Waste cigarette butt-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon as a non-mercury catalyst for acetylene hydrochlorination

Xin Jin,Yalei Hao,Chengxiang Liu,Hongbin Feng,Xingyun Li,Yan Zhu,Yuxin Zhou,Yujiang Song,Jiapeng Hu

The development of advanced carbon materials as metal-free catalysts holds great importance for mercury catalyst replacement in acetylene hydrochlorination. In this paper, we transform discarded cigarette butts into a porous nitrogen-doped carbon material (N-CB-800), exhibiting characteristics of high specific surface area, large N doping amount, defective structure and strong C2H2 chemical adsorption ability. These unique features endow N-CB-800 with a high catalytic performance with an acetylene conversion of 71.8% at 220 °C and an acetylene space velocity of 100 h−1, making it one of the most active metal-free catalysts. This work will be of great value for the recycling of living waste and provide meaningful guidance for the development of non-mercury catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination.

Citric acid modified waste cigarette filters for adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution

Aafia Tehrim,Min Dai,Xiange Wu,Malik Muhammad Umair,Imran Ali,Muhammad Ahsan Amjed,Rong Rong,Sheikh Fahad Javaid,Changsheng Peng

Waste cigarette filters (CFs) were recycled and modified with a nontoxic and low-cost citric acid (CA). The modified CFs were employed in the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous medium. The influence of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose on adsorption of MB dye was evaluated. The adsorption studies were conducted by employing linear and nonlinear Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity of CF obtained through linear and nonlinear Langmuir model were 88.02 and 94 mg g −1 , which improved up to 163.93 and 168.81 mg g −1 , respectively, after the introduction of functional groups in CF-CA. The adsorption kinetics data were well fitted by pseudo-second order kinetics with coefficient of regression (R 2 ) closed to unity. The removal efficiency of CF-CA was 97% at equilibrium time of 4 h. Desorption studies indicated that CF-CA could be regenerated by using HCl (0.1 M) and desorption efficiency was up to 82% upon second cycle of reusability experiment. This study proposed a green and economical use of recycled CFs in dyes wastewater treatment, simultaneously reducing the negative environmental impact due to their improper disposal.
