Spent graphite as promising carbon matrix for high performance SiO/C anode material of Li-ion battery

Yiqing Lu,Zhimin Zou,Yu Bai,Xin Wang,Hongwang Zhang,Chunhai Jiang

Commercialization of SiO/graphite (SiO/G) composite anode material has been partially conducted in modern-model Li-ion batteries but is still limited by its relatively high cost and inferior stability. Improving the Li-ion storage performance as well as lowering the manufacturing cost of SiO/G anode has been the ongoing target of many studies. Herein, a low cost SiO/G anode with good Li-ion storage performance is developed by facilely integrating SiO nanoparticles into spent graphite (SG) extracted from used LiFePO 4 batteries. The loose SG particles after repeated charge/discharge cycles can be easily exfoliated and combined with the SiO nanoparticles during the mechanical ball-milling treatment. Further processing the composite into spherical structure by spray-drying and pyrolysis results in practically applicable anode materials. The SiO/SG/C anode with a SiO mass ratio of 30 % exhibits the best overall performance including an excellent rate capability (385 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 ) and encouraging cycle stability (442 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). The coin-type full cells coupling the pre-lithiated spherical SiO/SG anode and NCM811 cathode delivers a high energy density of 461 Wh kg −1 (based on the active masses of both electrodes) and good cycle performance (74.4 % capacity retention at 0.5C after 100 cycles). This work not only provides a high performance yet low cost SiO/G anode material, but explores a high value added way for the reuse of SG, thus can practically push forward the development of LIBs .

Recycling of spend graphite anodes in Fenton-like catalysis for green economy and long-term sustainable wastewater purification

Yu Peng,Qiming Zhang,Yonghui Fan,Ruixuan Su,Wei Ren,Xiao Xiao,Xubiao Luo

The sustainable recycling of spent graphite anodes from lithium-ion batteries is crucial for circular economy development. This study evaluates three types of decommissioned spent graphite, caused by metallic contamination, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film failure, and structural degradation, as well as regenerates them via four combined wet/thermal techniques. Among these, acid treatment followed by calcination (AW+CT) demonstrated the best overall performance, achieving the highest comprehensive score (95.68 %) for bisphenol A (BPA) removal across key metrics: catalytic activity ( k obs  = 0.12245 min −1 ), lithium recovery (99.92 %), energy efficiency (ΔEEO = 402.44 kWh·m −3 order −1 ), total metal ion safety (Δ l  = 4.1341 mg/L), and economic feasibility (0.000659 USD). Mechanistic analyses revealed that residual Mn(II) species and defect-engineered carbon structures (oxygen functionalities and lattice defects) synergistically enhanced Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycling, thereby promoting hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation. Compared to commercial graphite, the regenerated spent graphite exhibited superior stability in long-term continuous-flow column tests and reduced environmental burdens by 20 %, as confirmed by life cycle assessment. Overall, this work offers valuable insights into a unified framework that integrates material classification, mechanistic understanding, and life-cycle sustainability evaluation, enabling high-value reuse of spent graphite anodes in Fenton-like catalysis.

Enhancing the depressed initial Coulombic efficiency of regenerated graphite anodes via the surface modification of a TiNb2O7 nanolayer

Haoran Da,Jin Li,Jiateng Shi,Haitao Zhang

Spent graphite (SG) anodes are extensively overlooked despite being a potential anode material on account of their relatively low cost when compared to the valuable metal elements of cathode materials . However, the cracked surface structure and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of SG will lead to depressed initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), which hampers the application of graphite recovery techniques. Here, a uniform layer of TiNb 2 O 7 nanoparticles is successfully constructed on a damaged SG surface. Benefiting from the stable structure, the TiNb 2 O 7 coating can effectively protect the cracked sites and enhance Li +  diffusion. In addition, this layer can provide a high Li +  insertion potential and effectively suppress the unfavorable formation of an unstable SEI. The TiNb 2 O 7 coating can also provide extra capacity, compensating for the capacity fade of SG. After modification, the regenerated graphite not only exhibits enhanced rate performance by means of reconstructed Li +  transfer channels but also demonstrates a prolonged cycle life due to the stabilized bulk structure. A full cell containing LiFePO 4 and a regenerated graphite anode shows a high capacity retention, namely, 89.0% after 500 cycles at 1C. This study obtains regenerated graphite with a high ICE, thereby promoting the reutilization of spent graphite anodes.

Eliminating low-crystalline defects in spent graphite anodes via low-temperature molten salt activation and controlled oxidation

Zikun Mai,Yuhao Ge,Yuan Feng,Kai Luo,Hao Zhang,Meng Huang,Jiashen Meng,Xuanpeng Wang

Spent lithium-ion battery graphite anodes (SG) feature in situ low-crystalline surface defects that hinder Li-ion diffusion and undermine structural stability. Conventional high-temperature remediation partially repairs defects but faces practical limitations due to energy-intensive processing and structural degradation risks. Here, we propose an efficient regeneration strategy based on low-temperature molten salt activation combined with controlled oxidation, aiming to efficiently regenerate SG with a focus on eliminating low-crystalline defects. The molten salt treatment activates the ion storage site, and the liquid-phase environment provides rapid ionic transport kinetics, facilitating impurity removal reactions. The oxidation calcination further removes low-crystalline defects of SG, ultimately harvesting regenerated graphite (RG-150–500) with purity of 99.22%. The RG-150–500 exhibits a high reversible capacity of 356.7 mAh g−1 at 0.2C, and a stable cyclability of 250 cycles with a capacity retention of 360.8 mAh g−1. From 0.1C to 2C, the rate capacity of RG-150–500 decreases from 369.5 to 243.9 mAh g−1, and when the rate returns to 0.1C, the recovery rate is 99.2%, revealing the high-rate capability of RG-150–500. Furthermore, the regeneration cost of RG-150–500 is only $7.442 per kg and the corresponding profit is $2.558 per kg. Therefore, this study provides an eco-friendly and energy-efficient solution for SG regeneration, particularly through its effective elimination of low-crystalline defects.

From graphite of used lithium-ion batteries to holey graphite coated by carbon with enhanced lithium storage capability

Shuhan Huang,Qinghua Fan,Xianghong Chen,Yuheng Wu,Liang Liu,Zhenwei Yu,Jiantie Xu

The efficient recycling of waste graphite anode from used lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted considerable concerns mainly owing to the environment protection and reutilization of resources. Herein, we reported a rational and facile strategy for the synthesis of holey graphite coated by carbon (hG 0.01 @C 0.10 ) through the separation, purification and creation of holey structures of waste graphite by using NaOH and carbon-coating by using phenolic resin. The holey structures facilitate the hG 0.01 @C 0.10 with the quick penetration of electrolytes and rapid diffusion of Li + . The carbon coating is more favorable for hG 0.01 @C 0.10 with improved electronic conductivity and less alleviated volume during the cycles. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of holey structures and carbon coating, the hG 0.01 @C 0.10 as anode for LIBs displays a high reversible capacity of 377.6 mAh g -1 at 0.5 C and superior rate capabilities ( e.g., 348.0 and 274.7 mAh g -1 at 1 and 2 C, respectively) and maintains a high reversible capacity of 278.7 mAh g -1 at 1 C after 300 cycles with an initial capacity retention of 80.0 %.

Multi-layer wrapping functionalized silicon via graphene aerogels regenerated from spent graphite anode achieves high efficient lithium storage

Zikang Yang,Xue Liu,Fan Ren,Shaoqing Liu,Yanqing Zhang,Jianwen Liu

The large volume expansion and severe pulverization of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) during cycling have significantly hindered its application into lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Graphene, for its excellent mechanical strength and high conductivity, has been widely applied to alleviate the swelling effect and enhance the ion conductivity of electrode materials. Herein, a facile and low-cost method to wrap Si by graphene aerogels with multiple shells is proposed in this work. Specifically, graphene oxide (GO) is synthesized by an improved Hummers’ method with waste graphite anode as raw material, the surface of SiNPs are modified with an amino group to achieve electrostatic attraction with an abundant carboxyl group on GO. Then a two-step reduction is carried out to synthesize a 3D graphene aerogel structure with uniformly distributed SiNPs, the inner rGO shell enhances the transport of ions on the surface of Si, the outer shell provides excellent confinement against the volume expansion during battery cycling.
