View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal In recent years, mental disorders have become serious health problems. Monitoring the usage of psychotropic drugs can reflect the prevalence of mental disorders in the population, and wastewater analysis is an effective method for monitoring the use of psychoactive pharmaceuticals. In our study, we collected 58 samples from 12 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in a southern city in China. We then analyzed the concentrations and loads of 18 frequently used psychoactive drugs and corresponding metabolites. The most abundant compounds in wastewater were diazepam, sulpiride, clozapine, venlafaxine, and quetiapine, with a detection frequency close to 100%. Sulpiride had the highest average load, followed by venlafaxine, clozapine, quetiapine, and diazepam. The higher load of diazepam in suburban WWTPs than in urban WWTPs reflects the large numbers of older people living in suburban areas in most of China. The lower loads of most target compounds in suburban WWTPs than in urban WWTPs indicate a greater likelihood of mental disorders in urban people than in suburban people. A correlation analysis of the target compounds revealed a correlation between the occurrence of venlafaxine, sulpiride, and clozapine. Overall, wastewater analysis is expected to be a significant tool for monitoring the consumption of psychoactive pharmaceuticals. Timing and regional distribution of 18 psychoactive drugs and metabolites in a Chinese city. The loads of most target compounds were lower in suburban WWTPs than in urban WWTPs. Schools showed high loads of diazepam, indicating that diazepam may be abused among students. Correlation was observed between venlafaxine, sulpiride, and clozapine loads.

The ketamine (KET) and its analogs consumed by humans are becoming emerging contaminants (ECs), as they at present in surface waters after being carried through wastewater systems. Drugs in wastewater can be analyzed using the direct-injection method, a simple wastewater analysis (WWA) method that can provide objective, continuous and nearly to real-time findings. This article describes an ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS) method for the simultaneous quantification and confirmation of seven KET-based ECs in wastewater by direct injection. After optimization of the UPLC–MS/MS and sample pretreatment conditions, the method was validated and applied to samples (n = 157) collected from several wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in southern China in which KET had the highest detection rate. The established direct-injection method was not only simple to perform but also had better sensitivity, shorter detection times, and analyzed more KET-based ECs than currently published methods, meeting the requirements for the monitoring and high-throughput analysis of common KET-based ECs. We also analyzed the fragmentation pathway of KET-based ECs to obtain product ion information on other unknown substances. Additional studies are needed to establish a comprehensive direct-injection screening method of ECs in wastewater on model-based assessment.

Illicit drug use in rural and suburban areas of China has not been studied extensively, as most studies have focused on illicit drug use in urban areas. To compare the differences between urban, suburban, and rural drug use, we collected influent samples from 19 urban, 9 suburban, and 18 rural wastewater treatment plants in Dalian, respectively. A method using solid-phase extraction combined with derivatization for gas chromatography -mass spectrometry analysis was applied to detect biomarker concentrations. The concentrations of methamphetamine and morphine ranged from 3.12 to 605 ng/L and < 2.35 to 198 ng/L, respectively. Norketamine was found in only four samples (5.56 to 14.5 ng/L), while 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine and benzoylecgonine were not detected in any samples. Methamphetamine use in rural areas (16.3 mg/day/1000 inhabitant (inh), prevalence: 0.06%) was significantly lower than those in urban (77.1 mg/day/1000 inh, prevalence: 0.23%) and suburban (234 mg/day/1000 inh, prevalence: 0.70%) areas. Heroin use in suburban areas (57.6 mg/day/1000 inh, prevalence: 0.10%) was significantly higher than that in urban (13.9 mg/day/1000 inh, prevalence: 0.02%) and rural (8.68 mg/day/1000 inh, prevalence: 0.02%) areas. The results indicate relatively low levels of illicit drug use in rural areas of Dalian, related to low incomes and outflow of the working-age population. Illicit drug use was most prevalent in suburban areas of Dalian, which may be influenced by large floating populations and few anti-drug efforts in suburban areas.

As the dangers of cannabis abuse draw attention worldwide, it is necessary to assess the level of consumption in the community. The analysis of 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) excreted in wastewater can provide information for a defined catchment area. Due to its hydrophobic nature and absence of ionizable groups, its detection is challenging. In this study, a highly sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed for the quantitative determination of THC-COOH in urban wastewater. The derivatization reagent 6-methylpyridine-3-sulfonyl chloride (MPS) with analyte-specific fragmentation was proven to be the most effective for improving sensitivity. Samples were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and satisfactory recovery was achieved (>79%) by adding acetonitrile to the samples for ultrasonic-assisted extraction before filtration. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.03 ng L−1 and 0.1 ng L−1, respectively, from a 40 mL sample. The established methodology was applied to profile the presence of THC-COOH in influent wastewater samples. It was shown that 20 out of the 252 samples contained THC-COOH and the concentrations were all below 1 ng L−1.

The quantification of illicit drugs in wastewater has become a valuable tool for monitoring illicit drug abuse. The commonly utilized methods for detecting drugs in wastewater require a substantial sample volume, extended pretreatment durations, and intricate procedures. This study first employed polydopamine-coated magnetic nanocomposites as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction, combined with UPLC-MS/MS, to simultaneously determine the concentrations of eleven common illicit drugs in wastewater. The synthesis process for Fe 3 O 4 @PDA is straightforward and high-yield. Benefiting from the strong magnetic response, good dispersibility, and abundant binding sites of the prepared nanocomposites, the extraction of illicit drugs from wastewater could be achieved in just 15 min. The method exhibited satisfactory limits of quantitation (ranging from 5 to 10 ng/L), commendable accuracy (ranging from 90.59 % to 106.80 %), good precision (with RSDs below 10 %), and less sample consumption (only 1 mL). The efficacy of this method was successfully validated through its application to actual wastewater samples collected from ten wastewater treatment plants. The results indicated that morphine, codeine, methamphetamine, and ketamine were the predominant illicit drugs present in the samples. The method developed is able to meet the needs of common illicit drug monitoring and high-throughput analysis requirements.

Due to severely overlapping emission and or/ excitation spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the specifically recognizing PAHs by the fluorescent technique is still a challenge. Here, synthesized Ag@SiO 2 nanoparticles with 40 ± 4 nm Ag core and 7 ± 1 nm SiO 2 shell performing as a nanoprobe could selectively recognize 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA) via metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) within 2 min. The sensing mechanism was based on the facts: (1) there was a perfect spectral overlap between the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of Ag@SiO 2 and the absorptive peak of 2-AA, and (2) 2-AA could interact with Ag@SiO 2 nanoparticles through hydrogen bonds between –NH 2 in 2-AA and –OH in SiO 2 shell. As a result, with Ag@SiO 2 nanoparticles as a nanoprobe, a fluorescent assay for detecting 2-AA was developed with a linear range from 1 nM to 800 nM, which exhibited an excellent selectivity over possible PAHs, dyes and metal ions . The detection limit was 1 nM. Finally, the developed assay was applied to analyse 2-AA in industrial wastewater samples, which were highly consistent with that of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This study presents a feasible assay for detecting 2-AA for environmental monitoring and toxic evaluating.
