With the development of new energy powered vehicles, the shortage of lithium resources has become more urgent. The recovery and extraction of lithium resources from waste lithium iron phosphate batteries can achieve the sustainable development of the new energy industry, alleviate the imbalance between the supply of and demand for lithium resources, and greatly reduce the environmental pressure brought by the future battery retirement tide. In this work, a poly(ethylene vinyl alcohol) nanofiber was employed to construct a positive interlayer via co-crosslinking with PEI and sprayed on a PES substrate, on which a positive polyamide nanofiltration layer was formed via interfacial polymerization with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride. The abundant interconnected pores of nanofibers provided high water flux. Meanwhile, the dual positively charged layer had a synergistic effect on cation rejection. The nanofiber interlayer greatly improved the roughness and effectively enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. The optimized nanofiltration membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 36.73 L m−2 h−1, a high Fe3+ rejection of 99.36%, and a Li+/Fe3+ separation factor of up to 115. Its excellent separation performance was maintained under acidic conditions, revealing its great potential in recycling lithium from waste batteries.

The growing use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries has raised concerns about their environmental impact and recycling challenges, particularly the recovery of Li. Here, we propose a new strategy for the priority recovery of Li and precise separation of Fe and P from spent LFP cathode materials via H 2 O-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Through adjusting the form of the metal complexes and precipitation mode, above 99.95% Li and Fe can be dissolved in choline chloride-anhydrous oxalic acid-water (ChCl-OA-H 2 O) DES, and the high recovery efficiency of Li and Fe about 93.41% and 97.40% accordingly are obtained. The effects of the main parameters are comprehensively investigated during the leaching and recovery processes. The recovery mechanism of the pretreated LFP is clarified and the rate-controlling step of the heterogeneous dissolution reactions is also identified. Results show that soluble phases of Li 3 Fe 2 (PO 4 ) 3 and Fe 2 O 3 are formed after roasting pretreatment, and Li(I) ions tend to form Li 2 C 2 O 4 precipitates with C 2 O 4 2− during the leaching process so that Li can be recovered preferentially in purity of 99.82%. After UV-visible light irradiation, Fe(III) ions are converted into Fe(II) ions, which can react with C 2 O 4 2− to form FeC 2 O 4 precipitates by adjusting the H 2 O content, and P is recovered as Na 3 PO 4 ∙12H 2 O (99.98% purity). Additionally, a plan for the recycling of used DES is proposed and the leaching and recovery performances still maintain stable after three recycling circles. The method offers an approach with a simple process, high efficiency, and waste-free recycling for priority recovery Li and precise separation of Fe and P from spent LFP batteries in DESs.

The growing demand for upgraded electronic products has resulted in a significant amount of waste batteries . In this paper, we propose a low-carbon, scalable mechanochemical waste-to-value strategy to convert spent ZnO from alkaline batteries into Zn-MOF-74, a functional metal–organic framework (MOF), for CO 2 capture. The conversion pathway of ZnO-to-MOF-74 was investigated via structural characterization techniques. Compared with commercial ZnO with a hexagonal prism-like morphology, spent ZnO, exhibiting a rod-shaped morphology, demonstrated greater readiness in transforming into Zn-MOF-74, completing the transformation in nearly 5 h via ball milling and reducing energy consumption by around 50%. Moreover, the CO 2 adsorption capacity of Zn-MOF-74 synthesized using spent ZnO, which is 2.07 mmol/g (at 273 K), is nearly triple that synthesized from commercial ZnO that has a hexagonal prism-shaped morphology. Overall, this study highlights the potential of repurposing spent ZnO in waste valorization , thereby significantly contributing to the advancement of a circular economy.

It is challenging to efficiently and economically recycle many lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the low valuation of commodity metals and materials, such as LiFePO 4 . There are millions of tons of spent LIBs where the barrier to recycling is economical, and to make recycling more feasible, it is required that the value of the processed recycled material exceeds the value of raw commodity materials. The presented research illustrates improved profitability and economics for recycling spent LIBs by utilizing the surplus energy in lithiated graphite to drive the preparation of organolithiums to add value to the recycled lithium materials. This study methodology demonstrates that the surplus energy of lithiated graphite obtained from spent LIBs can be utilized to prepare high-value organolithiums, thereby significantly improving the economic profitability of LIB recycling. Organolithiums (R–O–Li and R–Li) were prepared using alkyl alcohol (R–OH) and alkyl bromide (R–Br) as substrates, where R includes varying hindered alkyl hydrocarbons. The organolithiums extracted from per kilogram of recycled LIBs can increase the economic value between $29.5 and $226.5 kg −1 cell. The value of the organolithiums is at least 5.4 times the total theoretical value of spent materials, improving the profitability of recycling LIBs over traditional pyrometallurgical ($0.86 kg −1 cell), hydrometallurgical ($1.00 kg −1 cell), and physical direct recycling methods ($5.40 kg −1 cell).

Alkaline zinc–manganese batteries are the most used disposable batteries in the world and cannot be recharged. Spent alkaline zinc–manganese batteries are mainly disposed of in landfills, and the resulting enrichment of the soil with potassium(K), zinc(Zn), and manganese(Mn) pollutes the groundwater and wastes valuable resources. Herein, a process for the treatment of used alkaline zinc(Zn)–manganese(Mn) batteries that involved water leaching, calcination, and vacuum aluminothermic reduction was developed. Investigation of the elemental migration process and reaction mechanism showed that the purity of potassium carbonate(K 2 CO 3 ) reached 99 % with 92.1 % recovery at a water leaching temperature of 60 °C and time of 25 min. The leaching slag was calcined at 700 °C for 1 h to obtain calcined slag with zinc oxide (ZnO), manganese(III) oxide (Mn 2 O 3 ), and manganese(II) oxide (MnO) as the main phases. When the calcined slag was reduced with aluminum powder, the recovery rate of Zn reached 99.7 % at a reduction temperature of 1100 °C, reduction time of 2 h, and ratio of aluminum powder to calcined slag of 1.5:1. Under these conditions, Mn was recovered in the form of Al 6 Mn alloy, and the main phase of the remaining reduced slag was alumina. In this study, potassium and metallic zinc were separated and recovered, and at the same time, an aluminum(Al)–manganese(Mn) alloy was prepared. The developed environmentally friendly and emission-free process enables the efficient recycling of the valuable resources K, Zn, and Mn, resulting in cleaner battery disposal.
