Recycling has attracted great attention in academia, because of the economic and environmental benefits to industry. An eco-friendly strategy for recycling office waste paper (WP) was used to sustainedly separate oil–water mixtures. The hydroxyl groups of cellulose endow WP with superlipophilic and superhydrophilic properties in air and superoleophobic features under water. WP could separate various oils from oil–water mixtures, with separation efficiencies exceeding 99%. Importantly, the superhydrophilic WP could separate oil–water mixtures containing HCl, NaOH, and NaCl with separation efficiency above 98.9% for at least 30 cycles. The superoleophobicity of WP was maintained in solutions of different pH values for at least 24 h, suggesting good durability and stability. This green method is renewable, clean, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. More importantly, the recycled office waste paper not only removes oil from oily wastewater (such as in oil spills) but also realizes the recycling of WP. This method could provide new insights into resource recycling.

Background Up-cycling of waste papers to value-added carbon products has significant environmental and economic benefits in real life. This work aims to recycle the waste papers to construct amorphous carbon modified graphitic carbon nitride composite photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water under visible light. Methods Amorphous carbon (labeled as a-C) was yielded from the office waste papers by simple sulphuric-acid treatment and then combined with graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) to form the g-CN/a-C composite photocatalysts by the thermolysis of a-C and melamine mixture. Significant Findings The addition of a-C enlarges the surface area of g-CN from 11.52 m 2 g −1 of pristine g-CN to 28.12 m 2 g −1 of g-CN/a-C-100. In addition, the a-C incorporation can significantly separate the electrons from the photoexcited g-CN owing to the excellent conductivity of a-C. As a result, an increased photocatalytic H 2 generation was realized under visible light exposure. The g-CN/a-C-100 sample with optimized a-C contents offers the highest photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of up to 17.1 μ mol h −1 , which is ∼12 times higher than that of pristine g-CN under the same condition. The present study manifests the great potential of the recycling of office waste papers for increased photocatalytic H 2 generation.

Energy consumption from air cooling systems in summer, water scarcity in hot regions, and the functional reusability of waste paper are emerging environmental problems. Finding solutions to these problems simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, a superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO 3 film with hierarchical nano-sheets was fabricated to realize daytime radiative cooling with a temperature drop of 15–20 °C in summer and water harvesting with harvesting efficiency of 387 mg cm −2 h −1 bd utilization of recycled waste paper. The superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film demonstrates its self-cleaning properties against inorganic and organic pollutants . Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity of the film was maintained after base/acid corrosions, dynamic water flushing, and thermal treatment at 100 °C for 7 h, exhibiting good durability of the superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film is nonflammable after exposure to fire combustion for 1 min. In addition to waste paper, waste maize straws, and pasteboards were also collected to produce superhydrophobic passive cooling films. Results indicate that the above three cellulose-based raw materials can be well used to prepare durable superhydrophobic passive cooling materials. Environmental toxicology assessments confirm the safety of the material. This study not only provides a protocol for preparing superhydrophobic materials; but also demonstrates their potential for passive cooling and water harvesting.

New approach to recycle office waste paper was purposed in this paper, i.e., cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was extracted from waste paper and then used CNC as the organic filler to reinforce polyurethane elastomer (PUE) in thermal properties. A series of CNC/PUE nanocomposites was prepared in situ using a two-step process in solvent N,N-dimethylformamide solution by changing the content of CNC from 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 to 5 wt%. The results showed that CNC was covalently bonded to PUE, and specifically concerned with the hard segments of PUE resulting from the strong hydrogen bonding. The interactions between CNC and PUE caused the increased thermal and thermo-mechanical properties, and decreased water absorption of nanocomposites. Importantly, the initial degradation temperature of PUE with 2 wt% content CNC (CNC/PUE2) increased by 21 °C. CNC/PUE2 had the better comprehensive properties with the worse water absorption, which made CNC/PUE2 appealing in load bearing and outdoor applications. Hence, this work not only provided a new recycling method of waste paper but also provided a thermolstable PUE with lower cost.
