Construction of site-specific immobilized lipase in bio-inspired “rigid and flexible” composite PVIm/ZIF-8 for long-cycle biodiesel synthesis from waste cooking oil

Qian Wang,Xinyuan Zheng,Meiling Ge,Rong Chen,Fangpei Ma,Jianming Pan,Fu Yang

Maintaining the long-term stability of flexible polymer-immobilized lipase remains a significant challenge in enzyme catalysis. The deformation of the polymer during the process often damages the lipase, severely limiting its practical application. In this work, we in situ constructed rigid Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) in porous hydrophobic polymer PVIm as “rigid and flexible” composite PVIm/ZIF-8 through a self-assemble strategy. The implanted rigid ZIF-8 improves the network stability of the hydrophobic polymer PVIm. Additionally, it acts as a co-factor, leveraging defective Zn sites to immobilize lipase through bonding with its amino acid moieties. This approach represents a typical two-birds-with-one-stone strategy. The optimal biocatalyst CalA@PVIm/ZIF-8(0.3) affords the highest yield of biodiesel of 82 % with a TON of 136.6 g (biodiesel) /g (CalA) from waste cooking oil under 30 °C and 24 h. Compared to CalA@PVIm/ZIF-8(0.3), the TON of free CalA is only 25 % of that value. Compared to the ZIF-8-free CalA@PVIm, CalA@PVIm/ZIF-8(0.3) exhibits near 1.2 folds enhancement of performance, further unveiling the co-factor role of ZIF-8 in the reaction. More importantly, this incorporation of ZIF-8 makes the resulted CalA@PVIm/ZIF-8(0.3) afford at least 44 days operation period and retains 83 % original activity after 16 running recycles, superior to almost all the reported immobilized lipase researches, far outperforming that (24.1 % activity after 16 cycles) of CalA@PVIm. The wide flexibility in various biodiesel synthesis can be further demonstrated, affording the practical application value of developed catalyst.

Biodiesel production by transesterification of waste cooking oil in the presence of graphitic carbon nitride supported molybdenum catalyst

Wenlu Zhang,Chunrong Wang,Beining Luo,Peihang He,Liang Li,Guoqiang Wu

Development of the active metal species with high utilization and accessibility of oil macromoleculars is one of the critical factors affecting heterogeneous metal-based catalysts for production of biodiesel . Here, we synthesized two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride supported molybdenum ( x Mo/g-C 3 N 4 ) catalysts for the facile transesterification of waste cooking soybean oil. Various characterization results of these catalysts show the crystal structure of g-C 3 N 4 is not destroyed, however, Mo oxides phase, containing Mo 6+ and Mo 5+ state, is detected on the surface of the Mo/g-C 3 N 4 with much Mo-loading, and the ratio of Mo 6+ /Mo 5+ increases significantly with the increasing Mo loading. As expected, compared with the neat g-C 3 N 4 catalyst, the g-C 3 N 4 supported Mo catalyst exhibits a better catalytic performance; especially the 10%Mo/g-C 3 N 4 catalyst has the optimal waste cooking soybean oil conversion of 71.1% and biodiesel selectivity of 99.5%. Furthermore, the experimental parameters and catalytic reusability for the transesterification reaction over 10%Mo/g-C 3 N 4 catalyst are investigated. Moreover, the possible deactivation mechanism and regeneration method of as-prepared catalyst are also proposed. This work provides a valuable tactics for the production of clean and low-cost biodiesel from waste cooking soybean oil in the presence of efficient solid catalyst.

Example of removing printing ink from plastic surface using quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil

Xiaoxia Ye,Zhihao Wu,Min Wang,Yuancai Lv,Xiaodan Huang,Yifan Liu,Chunxiang Lin

The printing ink on the plastic surface greatly reduces the quality of recycled plastic products. In this work, quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil (WCOQE) was fabricated, using waste cooking oil, epichlorohydrin and trimethylamine aqueous solution as raw materials, by ring-opening esterification and quaternary amination reaction. The synthesis conditions of WCOQE were optimized, and the structure and properties of WCOQE were characterized by FTIR, zeta potential and 1H NMR. Furthermore, WCOQE had excellent emulsifying performance, low kraft point, low CMC value, good foaming and stability, which could effectively reduce the surface tension of water, showing application potential in the field of plastic deinking. Importantly, compared with the waste cooking oil without deinking effect, the WCOQE had an excellent deinking performance on the ink on plastic surface, and the deinking efficiency could be improved by increasing the concentration of deinking agent, the deinking temperature, and prolonging the pre-soaking and stirring time. The results of AFM, EDS, optical photos and Leica microscope showed that the roughness changed significantly, and the ink molecules were gradually peeling off. This work highlighted the excellent potential of quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil for the removal of printing inks on the plastic surface.

Synthesis and evaluation of CuO/UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks as a solid catalyst for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil

Basiru O. Yusuf,Sulayman A. Oladepo,Saheed A. Ganiyu,Abdul Malik P. Peedikakkal

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent for immobilizing guest active species due to their high surface area and porosity. In this study, CuO/UiO-66 catalysts with varying amounts of CuO were successfully synthesized and used for converting waste cooking oil (WCO) to biodiesel. The catalysts were characterized using N 2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, NH 3 -TPD, SEM, TEM, TGA and FTIR. The biodiesel was characterized using NMR and GC–MS. The results showed that CuO/UiO-66 displayed high catalytic activity due to the synergistic effect between UiO-66 and copper oxide in the composite. Under optimum reaction conditions, we achieved a 90.1 % conversion with the 7 %CuO/UiO-66 catalyst. This catalyst also displayed good stability and reusability with a conversion of 81.06 % after three cycles. Our kinetic studies revealed a pseudo-first-order kinetics, with 32.26 kJ/mol in activation energy, consistent with a chemically controlled reaction.

Production of hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil from catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil over nickel monoxide loaded corn cob-derived activated carbon

Peng Li,Bo Niu,Helin Pan,Yayun Zhang,Donghui Long

The bio-oil produced by the catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil (WCO) has great potential to become a substitute for fossil fuels. However, the low yield and high oxygen content of pyrolysis oil result in low added value. The low-cost production of high-yield and high-quality hydrocarbon-rich pyrolysis oil remains challenging. To efficiently convert WCO to high quality hydrocarbon-rich pyrolysis oil, a nickel oxide loaded activated carbon catalyst (Ni/AC) was introduced in the ex-situ catalytic system . The catalytic pyrolysis results showed that the catalyst exhibited high deoxygenation activity and the hydrocarbon content in the bio-oil could reach up to 99%. The selectivity of total aromatic hydrocarbons and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in liquid oil could reach 86.38% and 68.47%, respectively. By extracting hydrogen from hydrocarbon fragment, the NiO site facilitates dehydrogenation , resulting in a gaseous product with syngas (CO, H 2 ) as the main component, with a maximum syngas concentration of 70%. The hydrogen produced is favorable for hydrogen transfer reactions and as a result promotes deoxygenation and hydrocarbon production. This study provides valuable insight into a low-cost, efficient, and high-value-added way to recover WCO. It will avoid the risk of environmental pollution caused by WCO and provide a reference for the sustainable use of waste.

Co-production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes from cracking of waste cooking oil model compound over Pt–Ni/SBA-15 catalysts

Liu Wei,Zhang Guoliang,Hao Songyuan,Yuan Hong,He Weidong

Waste cooking oils (WCOs) are a cheap and rich source of carbon and hydrogen, and they exhibit great potential for the preparation of hydrogen gas and carbon nanomaterials. Here, we prepared three Pt–Ni/SBA-15 catalysts with Pt contents ranging from 0 to 2% to examine their activity in the catalytic cracking of WCO towards the production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A mixture of soybean oil, oleic acid and animal fat was used as a model compound of WCO, and the catalysts were characterised by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, temperature programmed reduction, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The effect of Pt loading and cracking temperature on the hydrogen production and the quality of CNTs was also evaluated. Among the prepared catalysts, 2%Pt–30%Ni/SBA-15 showed excellent catalytic activity at 750 °C, affording a maximum hydrogen content of 66.2 vol%, while CNTs with diameters of 20–100 nm and high crystallinity, oxidation stability, graphitisation and purity were also prepared.

Green preparation of branched biolubricant by chemically modifying waste cooking oil with lipase and ionic liquid

Wei Zhang,Hairui Ji,Yanliang Song,Sen Ma,Wei Xiong,Changjing Chen,Biqiang Chen,Xu Zhang

To reduce the environment pollution from biolubricant synthesis, in this study, we developed a green and efficient strategy for the preparation of octylated branched biolubricant from waste cooking oil (WCO): (1) WCO was first hydrolyzed by a lipase ( Candida sp. 99–125 ) to produce unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), the latter was subsequently concentrated by urea complexation; (2) Next, we synthesized new esters using the UFAs as substrate via esterification with 2-ethylhexanol employing lipase (Novozym 435) and the new esters products were further epoxidated; (3) After that, the epoxy group was attacked by a low-cost nucleophilic reagent, octanoic acid, to prepare octylated branched biolubricant using an recyclable ionic liquid , [HMIm][PF 6 ], as catalyst. After three recycling times, [HMIm][PF 6 ] remained catalytic activity with a conversion yield of 81.22% and selectivity of 82.10%. The obtained product showed excellent lubricant properties, such as low pour point of −61 °C, high viscosity index of 149 and high thermal-oxidation stability (onset temperature of 326.35 °C and oxidative onset temperature of 312.06 °C). The high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) measurement demonstrated that lubrication performance (friction coefficient of 0.09 and wear spot diameter of 203 μm) was much better than that of mineral based lubricant with the same viscosity grade. Therefore, this study provided a critical synthetic strategy for preparing high-performance biolubricants from WCO.

Syngas production from the CO2 reforming of a waste cooking oil model compound over catalysts derived from La1−xSrxNiO3 perovskites

Songyuan Hao,Wenbo Luo,Yaming Kang,Sen Fu,Hong Yuan

Syngas production from waste cooking oil (WCO) based on reforming with CO2 would allow the utilization of both resources. However, the catalysts used for reforming reactions (700–1000 °C) are prone to deactivation. In this work, La1−xSrxNiO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2) perovskites were prepared as catalyst precursors, then reduced and used for CO2 reforming of a waste cooking oil model compound (WCOMC). These materials exhibited stable catalytic activity during the reaction, attributed to the highly dispersed Ni0 nanoparticles on the La2O3 support and strong interactions between the metal and support. At 800 °C, the deposited amount of carbon on these catalysts decreased with increasing quantity of Sr doping into the A site of LaNiO3 and the syngas had a H2/CO ratio of 0.77. The present Sr-doped catalysts promoted the surface adsorption of oxygen along with the activation of C–H bonds. Most importantly, these materials strongly adsorbed CO2 and facilitated the conversion of carbon deposition to gaseous products.

Cation exchange resin catalysed biodiesel production from used cooking oil (UCO): Investigation of impurities effect

Junying Fu,Zhibing Li,Shiyou Xing,Zhiyuan Wang,Changlin Miao,Pengmei Lv,Zhenhong Yuan

Converting used cooking oil (UCO) into biodiesel using solid acid catalysts shows good prospective for renewable and clean bio-fuel production. However, impurities (metal ion, water, etc.) contained in UCO will have effect on its biodiesel production as well as to affect the activity of solid acids. These effects were explored by selecting two UCOs and their model oils (same AV, without impurities) as feedstock, two typical kinds of cation exchange resins Amberlyst 15 and Amberlyst BD20 as solid acid catalysts. The result indicated that metal ion (Fe 3+ ) not only showed deactivation effect on resin catalyst by cationic exchange but also exhibited catalytic activity as Lewis acid when it is in free form. The deactivation effect of water formed hydrated proton (–H 3 O + –SO 3 − ) on resin catalyst cannot be alleviated by increasing methanol concentration but can be reduced through increasing reaction temperature. The organic acids, highly active in catalysing esterification reaction, showed synergistic effect with cation exchange resin. Under the co-effect of organic acid (UCO-1, 0.19   mmol H +   g −1 ; UCO-2, 0.12   mmol H +   g −1 ), metal ions (UCO-1, Fe: 0.6   ppm, etc.; UCO-2, Fe: 9.4   ppm, etc.) and other impurities, UCO-1/UCO-2 showed a FFA conversion of 1.2–14.1%/4.5–13.5%, compared with −4.35–9.36%/0.96–8.09% for their model oils at reaction condition of catalyst-free, 70–110   °C, 3   h, methanol-to-FFA molar ratio of 15:1.

Batch and continuous esterification for the direct synthesis of high qualified biodiesel from waste cooking oils (WCO) with Amberlyst-15/Poly (vinyl alcohol) membrane as a bifunctional catalyst

Honglei Zhang,Fengyu Tian,Lingyun Xu,Ruichao Peng,Yingjie Li,Jie Deng

Biodiesel, a mixture of fatty acids alkyl esters (FAAE), has recently received great concern as an excellent alternative to the petro-based diesel fuel. However, the production of biodiesel at commercial scale is obstructed by both cost of feedstock and the homogeneous catalyst system. To overcome these challenges, Amberlyst-15/Poly (vinyl alcohol) membrane (A-15/PVA) with catalytic and water-adsorbing dual functions have been prepared by a simple phase inversion method. The as-prepared A-15/PVA exhibited excellent catalytic activity and reusability in both batch and continuous esterification of acidified oil from waste cooking oil (WCO) with methanol for biodiesel production. The produced biodiesel exhibited high qualified properties and stability and can be directly applied in current diesel engines without modifying the engines. The exhaust of the biodiesel and biodiesel-blend could decrease the smoke opacity, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, while increase the nitrogen oxide emissions. The A-15/PVA demonstrated great potential in industrial production of biodiesel with high qualities from WCO.

Preparation of phosphotungstic acid based poly(ionic liquid) and its application to esterification of palmitic acid

Yongqiang Wang,Dan Zhao,Guanyi Chen,Shejiang Liu,Na Ji,Hui Ding,Jianfeng Fu

For biodiesel production from waste cooking oils with high acid values, an inefficient esterification pretreatment is always conducted to convert free fatty acids (FFAs) before alkali-catalysed transesterification process. In this paper, phosphotungstic acid based poly(ionic liquid) was prepared to catalyse the esterification of palmitic acid with methanol while the required catalyst dosage was much lower than commercial Amberlyst-15. And the catalyst was characterized by 31 P CP-MAS NMR, FTIR, SEM, XRF and TG. Among the three poly(ionic liquid)s prepared in this paper, phosphotungstic acid based poly(ionic liquid) was selected to be the most suitable catalyst for esterification because the catalyst could be reused for more than 5 times without significant deactivation. According to single factor analyses, the esterification yield could reach 91.6% after 8 h while the reaction temperature, methanol to acid molar ratio and catalyst dosage were 65 °C, 6 and 3% wt, respectively. Afterwards, palmitic acid was proposed to be first adsorbed on the catalyst before reacting with methanol. Finally, a palmitic acid adsorbed Eley-Rideal model was employed to analyse the reaction and the adsorption mechanism was assumed as well.

Co-production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes by catalytic cracking of waste cooking oil model compound over Ni-Cu/Al-KCC-1

Songyuan Hao,Hong Yuan,Huiliang Zhou

Ni-Cu/Al-KCC-1 catalysts with different metal contents were prepared using fibrous nano-silica (Al-KCC-1) as a support. Field emission scanning electron microscopy observations showed that the spherical particle morphology and fibrous structure of the Al-KCC-1 were not changed after metal loading. Transmission electron microscopy images demonstrated that the introduction of copper improved the dispersion of the nickel, while X-ray diffraction and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction confirmed the formation of a Ni-Cu alloy. The N2-Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface areas of the catalysts were in the range of 269–378 m2/g and the average pore diameters were 7.988–12.078 nm. These Ni-Cu/Al-KCC-1 catalysts were used to promote the cracking of waste cooking oil model compound (WCOMC) to produce H2 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the 10 wt% Ni-5 wt% Cu/Al-KCC-1 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. At a WCOMC flow rate of 0.04 mL/min and 750 °C, the instantaneous volume fraction of H2 reached 49.8 vol% and the content of H2 in the gaseous product was close to 71.4 vol%.
