Highly Adhesive and Stretchable Epidermal Electrode for Bimodal Recording Patch

Shuaijian Yang,Chenqi Liu,Lixue Tang,Jin Shang,Junrui Zhang,Xingyu Jiang

For numerous biological and human-machine applications, it is critical to have a stable electrophysiological interface to obtain reliable signals. To achieve this, epidermal electrodes should possess conductivity, stretchability, and adhesiveness. However, limited types of materials can simultaneously satisfy these requirements to provide satisfying recording performance. Here, we present a dry electromyography (EMG) electrode based on conductive polymers and tea polyphenol (CPT), which offers adhesiveness (0.51 N/cm), stretchability (157%), and low impedance (14 kΩ cm2 at 100 Hz). The adhesiveness of the electrode is attributed to the interaction between catechol groups and hydroxyls in the polymer blend. This adhesive electrode ensures stable EMG recording even in the presence of vibrations and provides signals with a high signal-to-noise ratio (>25 dB) for over 72 h. By integrating the CPT electrode with a liquid metal strain sensor, we have developed a bimodal rehabilitation monitoring patch (BRMP) for sports injuries. The patch utilizes Kinesio Tape as a substrate, which serves to accelerate rehabilitation. It also tackles the challenge of recording with knee braces by fitting snugly between the brace and the skin, due to its thin and stretchable design. CPT electrodes not only enable BRMP to assist clinicians in formulating effective rehabilitation plans and offer patients a more comfortable rehabilitation experience, but also hold promise for future applications in biological and human-machine interface domains.

Polyphenylalanine-Baicalein Nanomicelles Reduce Nerve Cell Apoptosis and Inflammation to Enhance Neuroprotection and Poststroke Rehabilitation

Ling-Kun Zhang,Li Liu,Ziqing Li,Yiquan Zhang,Limin Zhai,Luna Zhang,Chu-Hua Li,Yan-Qing Guan

Cerebral ischemic stroke, neuronal death, and inflammation bring difficulties in neuroprotection and rehabilitation. In this study, we developed and designed the ability of natural lactoferrin-polyethylene glycol-polyphenylalanine-baicalein nanomicelles (LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai) to target and reduce these pathological processes, such as neurological damage and cognitive impairment in the stages of poststroke. Nanomicelles made from biocompatible materials have improved bioavailability and targeted distribution to afflicted brain areas. The results showed that LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai greatly improved the antioxidation, antiapoptosis, and anti-inflammation activity in vitro. Meanwhile, LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai improved the behavioral and cognitive impairment of 2-VO model mice, protected nerve cells in the hippocampus, and reduced inflammation at the brain injury site in vivo. In conclusion, LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai nanomicelles are employed for enhancing neuroprotection and poststroke rehabilitation. The development of this technology might provide a new technique for neural repair after ischemia in the future.

Hierarchically Porous Iontronic Fiber-Based Sensor Array with Ultrahigh Sensitivity for Stroke Rehabilitation Assistance

Wei Ren,Bolin Zhu,Wendong Li,Mengjie Gao,Chaosheng Luo,Lamu Dazhen,Jia You,Mingyang Lu,Shiteng Wu,Cancan Zhang,Ying Hong,Zhihe Long,Guangxian Li,Junlong Yang

Stroke-induced hemiplegia is a major cause of long-term disability, with recovery relying on repetitive joint training. However, conventional methods often require assistance from professionals or the use of bulky, nonconformal devices, hindering efficient therapy. In this paper, a simple strategy is presented to construct intricate microstructures on individual fibers. By controlling the solvent evaporation behavior during the solution blow spinning process, hierarchically porous iontronic fiber crossbar (HPIFC) pressure sensors are fabricated. These sensors exhibit exceptional sensitivity that exceeds that of most existing capacitive fiber crossbar sensors by more than two orders of magnitude. Leveraging sensor arrays integrated with machine learning algorithms, subtle joint motions are successfully detected as small as 1.27° and achieve accurate recognition of multiple angular degrees-of-freedom (multiple angular DoF) joint movements. On the basis of these findings, a passive rehabilitation training system is developed for hemiplegic patients, as well as an automated system for the quantitative assessment of rehabilitation progress, offering a comprehensive and efficient solution for poststroke recovery.

Phased array ultrasound enhanced delivery of nano drugs for tendon adhesion treatment

Fenghua Shen,Hanmin Peng,Song Pan,Pancheng Zhu

Introduction Over the decades, tendon adhesion has become a major health problem threatening the rehabilitation of patients after tendon surgery. Injury of the flexor tendon leads to rupture of the synovial sheath, which causes tendon exposure and adhesion with subcutaneous tissue. Current conservative therapies can promote chronic healing of tendon adhesion but have mixed success rates. Objectives To reduce the degree of tendon adhesion, the need for a new non-invasive and accurate treatment method is substantial. Methods A concave spherical ultrasonic phased array was fabricated by a fast 3D printing method. We generated a set of delayed square wave pulse sequences by Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) to excite the ultrasonic array, creating an ultrasonic focal area. Then we put flexor tendon phantoms, which were constructed by chitosan hydrogel and fibrous membrane using electrospinning, into the preset focal region and injected nano drugs in them. Finally, we measured the pulling force of tendon phantoms with a tensile tester. Results The pulling force of three experimental groups were measured by a tensile tester. Compared to the “untreated group” (0.96 N), the phantom pulling force of the “ultrasound + drug group” is 0.15 N, which is reduced by 85%. Furthermore, with the driving voltage increased from 5 V to 20 V, the pulling force can be reduced by 60%; with the duty ratio increased from 20% to 60%, the pulling force can be reduced by 50%; with treatment time increased from 1 min to 5 min, the pulling force can be reduced by 64%. Conclusion Utilizing an ultrasonic array combined with nano drugs, our phase compensation control method can reduce the degree of tendon adhesion and hold a great implication for applications of rehabilitation treatment for postoperative patients.

Untargeted metabolomics combined with lipidomics revealed the effects of myocardial infarction and exercise rehabilitation on blood circulation metabolism of patients based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry

Na Wang,Huimin Li,Hao Wu,Zilin Xia,Dabing Ren,Yunmei Zhang,Yan Zhao,Hong Zhang,Ke Zhuang,Lunzhao Yi

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of death worldwide. Exercise rehabilitation (ER) is a powerful tool to improve life quality and prognosis of MI patients. Herein, we developed an untargeted metabolomics combined with lipidomics method to qualitatively and quantitatively detect metabolites in plasma. A total of 475 metabolites were annotated according to MS, MS/MS, and quantified by internal standard method. Moreover, medical statistical methods combined with chemometrics were used for metabolomics data mining and interpretation of clinical issues (matched Cohort 1, n=90, Cohort 2, n=6). The results illustrated that abnormal lipid metabolism is the most significant metabolic disorder for MI patients. And, three metabolic pathways, bile secretion, HIF-1 signaling pathway, and glutathione metabolism were uncovered in MI patients. Furthermore, glutamine, Phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPCs) were revealed as the essential biomarkers for ER of MI patients. Our findings revealed the metabolic landscape of MI and metabolic alterations after ER, will underlay potential applications of plasma metabolites in the detection of MI and optimization of ER program.

Bending induced polarization charges in non-polar porous polymer for stroke rehabilitation

Bing Li,Shenglong Wang,Chang Liu,Yangguang Xu,Weili Deng,Jianghong Yuan,Jinjin Zhao,Weiqing Yang,Xiangyu Li

Owing to the flexibility, lightweight, long-life and low cost, polymers are promising candidates to realize electromechanical conversion in wearable electronics. The flexoelectric effect enables non-piezoelectric materials to achieve electromechanical coupling, thereby broadening application ranges of nonpolar polymers. In this work, the porous samples of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with various pore sizes and porosities are fabricated by the sacrificial salt template method and the chemical gas foaming method. The flexoelectric polarization response can be tuned directly by the structural characters of the porous PDMS . The transverse flexoelectric coefficient of porous PDMS can reach approximately 2.9 times the counterpart of the bulk one. The competitive mechanism between strain gradient and permittivity is proposed on flexoelectricity of random porous media by dielectric impedance spectrums and finite element analyses. The present regulation of flexoelectricity provides an alternative to electromechanical conversion. With the deep learning technique based on one-dimensional convolution neural networks, actions of both sick and normal legs of various stroke patients can be well recognized by the designed device of rehabilitation. The present rehabilitation monitoring system, which is an innovative application of the flexoelectricity in the porous polymers, offers a new approach to support physical therapy for post-stroke patients.

Multifunctional PVA/PNIPAM conductive hydrogel sensors enabled human-machine interaction intelligent rehabilitation training

Zhao Yanlong,Zhang Xichong,Hao Yilin,Zhao Yinghe,Ding Peng,Zhai Wei,Dai Kun,Zheng Guoqiang,Liu Chuntai,Shen Changyu

Hydrogels are regarded as an ideal medium for human-machine interaction (HMI) due to their adjustable modulus and flexibility, enabling seamless interaction with smart devices. However, in the field of medical rehabilitation, most of the hydrogel-based sensors are simply used to detect the motion signals of fragments and are rarely applied to help patients with rehabilitation training and improve the efficiency of doctors’ diagnosis. This is due to the unstable sensing properties and poor mechanical properties of most hydrogels. The poor durability greatly limits the application of hydrogel-based sensors. Here, a conductive hydrogel sensor with visual temperature sensitivity and good mechanical properties (300% strain, breaking stress 0.19 MPa) is fabricated by introducing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-borax system combined with a freeze-thaw physical regulation strategy. The PVA/PNIPAM/PEDOT: PSS (PPP) hydrogels possess a rapid response/recovery time (200 ms/200 ms), a low detection limit of 1% strain, and good stability and durability. Furthermore, by integrating the hydrogels with a LabVIEW circuit program and wireless transmission technology, we have created an advanced intelligent HMI system that facilitates monitoring, rehabilitation training, and remote diagnosis. Graphical The conductive hydrogel sensor with visual temperature-sensitive change and excellent mechanical properties has been successfully prepared by introducing PVA-borax system and freeze-thaw physical regulation strategy. The breaking strain of PVA/PNIPAM/PEDOT: PSS hydrogels achieves 300%, and the breaking stress achieves 0.19 MPa. As a strain sensor, due to the presence of the conductive polymer PEDOT: PSS, PPP hydrogel has a fast response/recovery time (200 ms / 200 ms), a low detection limit of 1% strain, and good stability and durability, enabling accurate monitoring of various human movements. By further combining PPP hydrogel sensor with the LabVIEW circuit program and wireless transmission technology, an advanced intelligent HMI system integrating monitoring, rehabilitation training and remote diagnosis has been constructed.

Porous-Skeleton-Encapsulated Electronic Yarn: High-Precision Pressure Sensing, Moisture Monitoring, and Personal Protection for Exercise Rehabilitation

Xinyi Wang,Chunyu Zhao,Congcong Lou,Lin Mei,Liang Lu,Jianpeng Wu,Yunqi Xu,Zimu Li,Shuai Liu,Xinglong Gong,Tianzhi Luo,Honghao Ma,Shouhu Xuan

The potential applications of smart electronic textiles (E-textiles) in exercise rehabilitation are promising. However, there is still a high challenge in achieving multimodal signal output, high fidelity, and low detection limit measurements. This study describes a structure-dependent dual-mode moisture-pressure sensing yarn (MACHy) that features a porous skeleton encapsulating the electrode core yarn through a chemical and physical crosslinking-induced gelation process. The porous skeleton absorbs water and alters MACHy's resistance, endowing the excellent moisture detection performance. Meanwhile, the single MACHy is pressure-insensitive. When the MACHy yarns interweave, a piezoresistive pressure sensor unit with a low detection limit (0.01 N), high fidelity, and wide detection range (50 N) is fabricated due to the elastic porous shell and the twisted electrode core yarn, which enlarges the deformation space. The scalable MACHy is further woven into an intelligent wristband, demonstrating both Bluetooth music control and wound exudate alarm. Finally, an intelligent knee pad combining machine learning to accurately identify knee poses is prepared. Moreover, the MACHy fabric exhibits controllable joint heating (25–85 °C), cefazolin sodium salt release (150 μg with 50 min), and electromagnetic interference shielding (30 dB) performance, which provides new insights into the design and application of multimodal sensing textiles.

Degradable, biocompatible, and flexible capacitive pressure sensor for intelligent gait recognition and rehabilitation training

Dedong Guo,Yuanlong Li,Qihui Zhou,Zhongxiang Yu,Xueqian Liu,Shuheng Dong,Shipeng Zhang,Ho-Kun Sung,Zhao Yao,Yang Li,Yuanyue Li

Gait recognition and rehabilitation training based on pressure sensing technology have an important role in the field of rehabilitation medicine. However, existing pressure sensors that are used in this process are often fabricated from non-degradable or non-biocompatible source materials, which limits their application in long-term sustainable use. In this study, we propose a high-performance, degradable, biocompatible and flexible capacitive pressure sensor. Its dielectric layer is prepared using a polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) electrospun nanofiber membrane (ENM), while its upper and lower electrodes are fabricated from PVA@graphene screen-printed ENMs. Experimental results demonstrate the sensor's exceptional pressure sensing performance, characterized by its high sensitivity (0.54 kPa −1 at 0–10 kPa), low detection limit (∼2.2 Pa), rapid response time (26.6/29.9 ms), and excellent stability (5000 cycles). Furthermore, it exhibits outstanding biocompatibility, achieving a cell viability assay survival rate exceeding 97%, and remarkable degradability, completely degrading within one hour. A gait recognition and rehabilitation training system has been developed by integrating the sensors with a deep learning algorithm and wireless transmission technology. The system can effectively monitor and record dynamic parameters of lower limb swing during walking, exhibiting an impressive gait recognition accuracy of 98% over five normal and abnormal gaits. Moreover, it can guide patients in performing diverse rehabilitation actions as well as monitor their progress through action count recording. This innovative solution offers a sustainable approach to gait recognition and rehabilitation training within the field of rehabilitation medicine, thereby opening up new avenues for patient recovery.

Lightweight and Mechanically Robust Cellulosic Triboelectric Materials for Wearable Self-Powered Rehabilitation Training

Chenchen Cai,Tao Liu,Xiangjiang Meng,Bin Luo,Mingchao Chi,Jinlong Wang,Yanhua Liu,Song Zhang,Cong Gao,Yayu Bai,Shuangfei Wang,Shuangxi Nie

Lightweight and robust self-powered wearable devices are of great importance in rehabilitation and medical assistance, but this places greater demands on the development of functional materials. In particular, a balance between reducing the weight of materials and enhancing their mechanical performance is urgently needed. Here, this study reports a design strategy based on a cross-scale strengthening mechanism, which endows triboelectric materials with mechanically robust properties, and can withstand more than 16,600 times its weight without any deformation. A biomimetic ordered network structure with “wall-septum” is obtained by using the directional ice templating method, followed by the formation of more hydrogen bonds between polymer molecular chains promoted by salting-out. The resultant triboelectric material exhibits a Young’s modulus of 130.3 MPa, and a specific modulus of 409.0 kN m/kg. Triboelectric materials are used to construct highly robust triboelectric nanogenerators that are stable even under an impact of 735.5 kPa. The accurate acquisition of a human motion state signal in the process of rehabilitation training is realized. This study provides a universal strategy for the development of lightweight and robust triboelectric material and provides a solution for the application of self-powered wearable devices in rehabilitation training.

Biodegradable Shape-Memory Ionogels as Green and Adaptive Wearable Electronics Toward Physical Rehabilitation

Shanshan Wu,Jinhui Huang,Shirong Jing,Hui Xie,Shaobing Zhou

Rehabilitation is necessary for the recovery of patients with paralysis caused by stroke and muscle atrophy. Wearable electronics can provide feedback on physical training and facilitate healthcare. However, most existing wearable electronics are difficult to maintain a conformal skin-device interface. Additionally, the use of non-degradable electronic materials is associated with environmental risks. Herein, ionogels with biodegradation and shape-memory properties as eco-friendly and geometry-adaptive wearable electronics for rehabilitation are proposed. The biodegradation is enabled by incorporating polycaprolactone segments into the ionogel matrix. Moreover, the ionogel-based wearable electronics can be conformal to certain joints by shape programming, and provide stable and reproducible real-time signals reflecting joint movements during long-term rehabilitation training assisted by a robotic glove, facilitating carers to assess rehabilitation efficacy and choose an appropriate scheme. This study demonstrates the potential of biodegradable shape-memory ionogels as green and adaptive wearable electronics for robot-assisted rehabilitation.

Ultrasensitive wearable strain sensor for promising application in cardiac rehabilitation

Shen Yangyang,Yang Wenke,Hu Fudong,Zheng Xuwei,Zheng Yanjun,Liu Hu,Algadi Hassan,Chen Kui

Real-time physiological signal monitoring is very essential to evaluate the function recovery, and the construction of ultrasensitive strain sensor has become the key technique and research hotspot in cardiac rehabilitation. Here, piezoresistive conductive polymer composites (CPCs)–based strain sensor, of which the conductive MXene/AgNW composite film served as the sensing materials and the flexible and stretchable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) acted as the supporting layer, was developed and further pre-strain treated to construct the ultrasensitive microcrack structure. Importantly, changing the mass percentage of MXene, sample thickness, and pre-strain amplitude can effectively tune the microcrack structure to achieve the optimization of strain-sensing performance of the sensor. As a result, the prepared strain sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 602), wide working range (90% strain), low detection limit (0.2%), rapid response and recovery time (60 ms/70 ms), and long-term durability over 1000 cycles. As a proof of concept, it can accurately monitor the pulse rate and respiration rate under different sports states and the simulated breathing modes, which will undoubtedly provide strong guarantee for the real-time health monitoring during the treadmill exercise and assessment of cardiac status. This work will undoubtedly possess a great guidance in the evaluation of cardiac rehabilitation.
