Breaking trade-off barriers of strength-ductility in Ti alloys and their composites has been a key challenge for their engineering applications. Herein, we developed a new strategy of introducing β-Ti ductile zones in heterostructured (Cu@CNTs/TC4)+TC18 composites, which were synthesized using two-stepped ball milling, spark plasma sintering and hot rolling processes. Such composites are composed of TC18-coarse grain zones (CGZ) and (TiC+α'')-reinforced TC4-fine grain zones (FGZ). They achieve an exceptional high strength and high ductility, which are superior to those of TC4 alloys and homogeneous Cu@CNTs/TC4 composites. Heterogeneous interfacial microstructures of TC4-FGZ/TC18-CGZ play an important role in strengthening and toughening effects. The grain-coordinated deformation between TC18-CG and TC4-FG is also the key reason for achieving an exceptional ductility.

Ductilization and suppression of annealing-induced embrittlement have become the critical premises for various structural applications of high-strength tungsten materials but have yielded few practical advances. Here, we successfully fabricated W–Re and nano-particle doped W-Re-ZrC alloys with a combination of desirable ductility and a high tensile strength above 1.3 GPa by powder metallurgy plus hot swaging. Specifically, the W–Re and W-Re-ZrC alloys exhibit total elongations of 31.6% and 16.1%, respectively, at room temperature. Upon high-temperature annealing at 1600 °C, the W-Re-ZrC alloy still retains a high total elongation of 12.9% and a high tensile strength of over 1.3 GPa, unlike the W–Re alloy, which exhibits substantial losses of ductility and strength. Microstructure analysis reveals that a large amount of low-angle grain boundaries and high-density mobile dislocations are responsible for ductilization. Meanwhile, ZrC nano-particles stabilize low-angle grain boundaries and dislocation structures at elevated temperatures, suppressing annealing-induced embrittlement in the W-Re-ZrC alloy. The present work provides a promising methodology for manufacturing bulk high-strength tungsten materials with favorable room-temperature ductility and high resistance to catastrophic failure during long-term service.

To surmount the longstanding puzzle of strength-ductility trade-off, efforts had been made to apply Mg - Ag microalloying on 5%TiB2/Al-4.5%Cu composites by in situ molten salt reaction and subsequent heat treatment. The obtained composites achieve an eye-catching tensile elongation (δ) of 6.1 ± 0.4%, while maintaining elevated ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 497 ± 4 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 401 ± 3MPa. Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that the uniformly distributed TiB2 particles together with semi-coherent grain boundaries between the α-Al matrix and reinforcement phase (TiB2 particles, Ω-Al2Cu, σ-Al5Cu6Mg2) facilitated the dislocation motion integrally, which eliminated the stress concentrations, may be the main reason for amelioration in the strength-ductility trade-off of the composites when subject to rigorous multi-step heat treatment.

Because of the inherent quasibrittleness and heterogeneity, matrix-directed toughening of concrete and cement composites remains to be a huge challenge. Herein, inspired by nacre materials, a novel biomimetic bulk cement composite is fabricated via a facile and efficient process based on compacting prefabricated multisized cement-polymer hybrid prills. This method combines with the three-dimensional “brick–bridge–mortar” structure design and synchronously the intrinsic and extrinsic toughening strategies. Such an approach shows the remarkable maximum toughness enhancement of 27-fold with 71% increase in flexural strength via cooperation with only 4 wt % organic matter. More attractively, it alters the traditional brittle fracture of cement composites to a distinct ductile fracture. In addition, such a biomimetic composite demonstrates the long-term ever-increasing strength and toughness, performing the excellent ductile-fracture retention ability. The hierarchical toughening mechanisms are further revealed with the synergy of microscopic characterizations and simulation methods. This strategy provides a new route for the development of high toughness biomimetic cement-based materials for potential applications in civil engineering domain.

Polyurea shows high promise as an elastomer in impact protection. However, significant challenges persist in the impact resistance mechanisms of the polyurea layer (PUAL) on ductile/brittle substrates under low-velocity impact. This study synthesized a high-strength, highly elastic polyurea and applied it to polyurea-6061Al/polyurea-epoxy resin composite structures. Low-velocity impact tests were conducted to obtain data on impact energy, impact strength, and residual deformation. Based on these results, a numerical model was established and validated. By combining experimental and simulation approaches, the impact resistance mechanism of polyurea was investigated. Results show that: (i) PUAL enhances the performance of the ductile 6061Al substrate more effectively than on the brittle epoxy resin; (ii) on the ductile substrate, PUAL exhibits a synergistic effect with the substrate, enhancing peak force and strain, while on the brittle substrate, enhancement relies on PUAL's deformation resistance; (iii) increased PUAL thickness significantly improves impact strength, but requires a balance with specific energy absorption, with solid PUAL outperforming discrete form; (iv) the optimal PUAL position varies with thickness, form, and substrate type. Overall, the impact resistance mechanisms of composite structures involve PUAL's recoverable multidirectional deformation, stress dispersion and energy transfer on the ductile substrate, structural maintenance for the brittle substrate, and interlayer interfacial dispersion. Therefore, it highlights polyurea's potential to improve low-velocity impact resistance.

Ductile Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 shows promising thermoelectric properties and interesting phase transitions and structural features above room temperature. In this work, our experiments reveal that Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 is composed of a Ag 2 Te-based glass and a Ag 2 S-based supercooled liquid at room temperature. The Ag 2 Te-based glass preserves its amorphous state in the measured temperature range (20–303 K), while the Ag 2 S-based supercooled liquid crystallizes into a triclinic phase below 183 K, leading to respectively the glass and crystalline-like thermal transport of Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 near room temperature and at low temperature. At the crystallization point of the Ag 2 S-based phase, the electrical conductivity of Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 shows an anomalous change. The extremely wide supercooling region (183–420 K) of the Ag 2 S-based phase leads to the unprecedented ductility of Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 . The thermoelectric figure of merit zT of Ag 2 S 0.4 Te 0.6 increases monotonically with increasing temperature and reaches ∼0.17 at 300 K, showing the great potential as a ductile thermoelectric inorganic.

To overcome the strength-ductility conflict in particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (PRAMCs), a novel dual configuration strategy of microstructure was proposed in this work. The dual configuration including both heterogeneous grain structure and hybrid reinforcements was obtained by powder metallurgy, which was designed as submicron-sized SiC particles (SiCsm)/Al and micron-sized SiC particles (SiCm)/2024Al components. Representative alternating coarse grain (CG) bands containing SiCm and ultra fine grain (UFG) bands with dispersed SiCsm were revealed in microstructural characterizations. Compared to corresponding homogeneous composites with the same fraction particles, the dual configuration composite achieved simultaneous enhancement in strength and ductility and remained a comparable Young’s modulus of 98GPa, which represented 442 MPa in yield strength, 590 MPa in ultimate strength and 8.7 % in fracture elongation. The extra strength provided by hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening is a potential dominant strengthening mechanism. The intrinsic toughening mechanisms primarily contribute to HDI strain hardening and enhanced dislocation accumulation capacity, while the extrinsic toughening mechanisms presumably attribute to more uniform microcrack distribution and blunting effect of CG zones on cracks. Our work provides a feasible route including ball milling and powder assembly to preparate high-modulus aluminum matrix composites for strength-ductility balance design.
