Preparation and characterization of UV-curable waterborne polyurethane using isobornyl acrylate modified via copolymerization

Fuhao Dong,Yuehan Qian,Xu Xu,Hiba Shaghaleh,Lizhen Guo,He Liu,Shifa Wang

Improving the properties of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is an imperative yet high-demand step in the application of WPU in industry. The UV-curing technique is an effective way to enhance the application properties of WPU. Herein, a UV-curable WPU emulsion was prepared by mixing isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with a commercially available WPU emulsion. With the introduction of the IBOA, the viscosity of the IBOA-modified WPU (IAWPU) emulsion decreased, and the particle size increased. The IAWPU emulsion was stable for more than 6 months. The resulting IAWPU film restricted the movement of the segment by the rigid ring structure of IBOA. Meanwhile, IBOA also leads to an increase in the crosslinking density of the IAWPU films. The resulting IAWPU films had great water resistance, exhibiting a higher contact angle and lower water absorption than pure WPU. The tensile strength of the IAWPU film is up to 13.52 MPa, which is 14 times higher than the 0.9 MPa of pure WPU films. This work demonstrates that IBOA can more effectively improve the water resistance and mechanical properties of WPU through UV-curing technology.

Toward replacement of methyl methacrylate by sustainable bio-based isobornyl methacrylate in latex pressure sensitive adhesive

Cheng Fang,Xinbao Zhu,Yunfeng Cao,Xu Xu,Shifa Wang,Xiaohong Dong

Sustainable bio-based monomer isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) was evaluated as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based methyl methacrylate (MMA) as hard monomer in the application of acrylic latex pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). The influence of bio-based IBOMA on the viscosity and particle size of the latexes and the gel content, sol molecular weight (M w , M n ) and adhesive properties (loop tack, peel strength and shear strength) of the PSA copolymers were investigated. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), contact angle analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were used to characterize the structure and properties of latexes and corresponding films. Results were compared with those obtained when using traditional petroleum-based hard monomer MMA. Some interesting phenomena and results were indeed obtained in this work. This article will not only enrich the application of bio-based monomer IBOMA in the field of acrylic emulsion PSA, but also provide sustainable methods for the preparation of high performance acrylic emulsion PSAs (e.g. high water resistance and high cohesion emulsion PSAs).

Acrylate copolymer-based super oil absorption resins: effects of steric hindrance of the monomer

Zhou Feng,Zhang Jie,Xie Peng-fei,Li Yu

This work reports the relationship between monomer composition of typical acrylate copolymers and their oil absorption behaviors, considering the steric effects of isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) or reactive silica nanoparticles. With a molar ratio of stearyl acrylate (SA): butyl acrylate (BA): IBOMA = 1:1.2:0.3, the random copolymers exhibited absorbency of more than 30 mL/g for benzene, xylene, and other common fuel oils. The copolymers of SA and BA synthesized in the presence of 2% reactive silica nanoparticles (R-SiO 2 ) showed further improvement in oil absorbency, reaching 39.5 mL/g, 43.6 mL/g, and 40.7 mL/g for benzene, xylene, and CCl 4 , respectively. Compared to copolymers of SA and BA, copolymers formed using IBOMA or R-SiO 2 mainly hindered the diffusion of viscous oils such as kerosene or diesel, leading to decrease in absorption rate. All the prepared copolymers exhibited oil retention up to 99% for gasoline, kerosene, and CCl 4 after saturation of absorption, after centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 5 min, which is attractive for practical applications.

Polyacrylate emulsion containing IBOMA for removable pressure sensitive adhesives

Lei Zhang,Yingjie Cao,Lei Wang,Lu Shao,Yongping Bai

In the area of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), corona treatment or other preprocessing on the carrier was commonly utilized for the enhancement of the interaction between the adhesive layer and the carrier, with complicated procedures and operations. To make it easy, one-pot emulsion polymerization using n-butyl acrylate, isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and acrylic acid was conducted in the presence of a reactive emulsifier SR-20 to obtain a reinforced adhesive tape. First, the emulsion had good stabilities, especially freeze-thaw stability, which was helpful to the fabrication of PSAs. Second, IBOMA increased the binding strength between adhesive layer and adherend. The properties of the final tapes well fulfilled the requirements of this areas, such as that the 180° peel strength of 125.9 N/m when coated on non-corona surfaces, the tack of 19 #, and the shear holding time of more than 100 h. Third, the tapes produced using the above emulsion could be removed many times, with no PSAs residue on the adherend even when coated on untreated PP, which showed the potential of recycling and environmental protection. Thus, these properties make the polyacrylate emulsion have great potential for practical applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 42886.
