Simple SummaryThe Solanaceae crops are the main hosts ofZeugodacus tau, a pest insect that causes serious damage to economically important crops of Solanaceae. In the winter–spring period, female adults ofZ. tauhave been found to oviposit on the pepino melonSolanum muricatum. However, the differences in the ability of the fruits ofS. muricatumand other Solanaceae crops to attract gravidZ. taufemales have not been clarified. In this study, oviposition and trapping bioassays were performed to clarify whether such differences existed. GC-MS was used to identify the compounds and relative contents of the volatile odors ofS. muricatum. The Y-tube olfactometer system was used to determine the compounds that induced behavioral responses in gravidZ. taufemales. The results show thatSolanum muricatumodor was attractive forZ. taufemales. The nine compounds from the volatiles ofS. muricatuminduce behavioral responses in gravidZ. taufemales. These results are beneficial for preventingZ. taufemales from harmingS. muricatum, developing attractants and repellents forZ. taufemales, and establishing a system of ecological control forZ. taufemales.AbstractZeugodacus tau(Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a pest seriously harmful to Solanaceae crops and was found to oviposit on the pepino melonSolanum muricatum(Aiton). To date, the differences in the ability of the fruits ofS. muricatumand other Solanaceae crops to attract gravidZ. taufemales have seldom been reported. Oviposition and trapping bioassays were performed to clarify whether such differences existed. A combination of GC-MS and the Y-tube olfactometer system was used to identify and determine the compounds inducing behavioral responses in gravidZ. taufemales to the volatile odors ofS. muricatum. The results show thatS. muricatumodors play a role in attracting gravidZ. taufemales. The odors of Solanaceae crops influence their ability to attract these organisms. The nine compounds from the volatiles ofS. muricatuminduce tendency or repellency responses in gravidZ. taufemales. Hexyl acetate, butyl acetate, amyl actate, and isoamyl acetate caused tendency behavior in gravidZ. taufemales, while hexyl hexanoate, butyl isovalerate, butyl valerate, and isoamyl hexanoate caused repellency behavior. Heptyl acetate caused repellency behavior in gravidZ. taufemales at higher concentrations (5 mg/mL) but caused tendency behavior at a low concentration (0.5 mg/mL). These results suggest that vigilance against the harm caused byZ. tauis required during the cultivation ofS. muricatum. The nine compounds of the volatile odors ofS. muricatumcould help to develop attractants and repellents for gravidZ. taufemales. These results are beneficial for preventingZ. taufemales from harmingS. muricatum, developing attractants and repellents forZ. taufemales, and establishing a system of ecological control forZ. taufemales. Keywords:Zeugodacus tau;Solanum muricatum;induced oviposition;attraction rate;volatile

The objective of this work was to determine the best conditions for the use of synthetic sex attractants to monitor Illiberis pruni Dyar (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae, Procridinae) in the Helan Mountain National Nature Reserve, Ningxia, China. Traps with binary blends of 2-butyl (7Z)-dodecanoate (300 µg) and 2-butyl (9Z)-tetradecanoate (300 µg) at a ratio of 1:1 caught the most moths. Catches were significantly different across 5–45 m inter-trap distances; the optimal trapping radius was 25 m. Trap height did not affect catches. The slope aspect, temperature, and humidity significantly influenced catches. More moths were caught as temperatures increased and relative humidity decreased. Traps placed on shady slopes caught significantly more moths than did traps placed on sunny slopes. This study elucidates how various factors influence the effectiveness of traps. The implications of these findings could facilitate safer and more environmentally friendly in situ management of I . pruni .

Pheromones can be used as leafhopper attractants. However, commercial pheromone products, such as the Ingle lure, have certain limitations, including poor persistence in the field. In this study, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-ocimene, linalool, and geraniol were selected and behaviorally tested as potential leafhopper attractants. Y-tube olfactometer tests showed that the C2 formulation was more effective than other formulations. In tea field trials, the number of leafhoppers caught by sticky board traps baited with C2 lures was greater than that caught by treatment. The number of leafhoppers attracted by the C2 lures was greater than that attracted by the commercial Ingle lures. Additionally, the total amount of active C2 components on lures was greater than that of the active components on the lure after 14 days. Thus, the results indicated that the C2 formulation may attract leafhoppers and have a greater persistence than other formulations in tea field.

Introduction: Tuta absoluta is currently considered one of the most devastating invasive pests of solanaceous plants worldwide, causing severe damage to the tomato industry. Insects use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to locate host plant for feeding and oviposition. Those VOCs could be developed as lures for pest monitoring and control. Methods: In this study, the differentially accumulated VOCs between the preferred host (tomato) and non-preferred host (eggplant) were analyzed by GC–MS method, and their roles on female T. absoluta host selection and egg laying behaviors were investigated using electroantennography (EAG), olfactometer and cage experiments. Results: A total of 39 differentially accumulated VOCs were identified in tomato and eggplant. Strong EAG signals were obtained in 9 VOCs, including 5 VOCs highly accumulated in tomato and 4 VOCs highly accumulated in eggplant. Further olfactometer bioassays showed that 4 compounds (1-nonanol, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl octanoate and o-nitrophenol) were attractive to T. absoluta females, while 5 compounds (2-phenylethanol, 2-pentylfuran, trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine and trans-2-nonenal) were repellent, indicating that VOCs from host plants play important roles in host plant preferences. The attractive activities of 1-nonanol and ethyl octanoate, as well as the repellent activities of trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal and trans-2-nonenal, were further confirmed in cage experiments.Discussion: In this study, two attractants and two repellents for T. absoluta were developed from plant released VOCs. Our results could be useful to enhance the development of eco-friendly and sustainable pest management strategies for T. absoluta.

Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is one of the most important parasitic natural enemies of Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in peach and pear orchards. The artificial rearing T. dendrolimi have been widely used in biological control programs in recent years. However, its actual parasitic effect on the pest in the field is less, so it is important to develop attractants to increase the parasitic efficiency of the parasitoids. T . dendrolimi can be easily attracted by semiochemicals derived from flowers, intact plants, herbivore-attacked plants, and insects in its orchard habitats. In this paper, 73 semiochemicals were evaluated as potential attractants at three concentrations (0.1 mg/mL, 1 mg/mL, and 10 mg/mL) to T . dendrolimi by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and Electroantennogram (EAG) technology, and then the mixtures of active individual compounds were further tested and evaluated in the field. As a result, 17 individual compounds showed attractive bioactivity to T . dendrolimi . Interestingly, when methyl salicylate and benzaldehyde mixed with linalool oxide or cis -3-hexenyl caproate in a volume ratio of 10:3:3 respectively showed excellent attractant bioactivity for T . dendrolimi in the orchard field. Thus, introducing such parasitoid attractants in orchard habitat may improve the biological control effect to pests.

Electroantennogram (EAG), Y-tube olfactometer, and wind tunnel bioassays were conducted to test the electrophysiological and behavioral responses of Cryptorrhynchus lapathi L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to six individual volatiles and seven essential oils (compounded volatiles). The aim of this study was to select effective plant compounds that can be used in the development of semiochemical-based push–pull methods for the control of this harmful insect. Male and female C. lapathi displayed strong EAG responses to linoleic acid, α-pinene, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, geraniol, turpentine oil, and salicylaldehyde. Y-tube olfactometer assays indicated that salicylaldehyde and α-pinene elicited strong repellent effects on female C. lapathi . Linoleic acid and ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol showed greater luring effects on male and female C. lapathi compared with the control. Turpentine oil was stronger repellent, and geraniol showed stronger luring effects on male C. lapathi than the control. Wind tunnel assays with both male and female C. lapathi indicated that salicylaldehyde, α-pinene, and turpentine oil elicited repellent effects compared with the control. Linoleic acid, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, and geraniol were stronger lures of both male and female C. lapathi than the control. These results provide a basis for the further development of C. lapathi luring and repellent agents.

Methyl eugenol (ME) is a highly potent sexual attractant for Bactrocera dorsalis , which plays a crucial role in agricultural pest management. In this study, a composite fiber membrane was prepared by polystyrene (PS), polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), and ME through electrostatic spinning respectively. The effective release period of ME was prolonged by triggering PEGDA with UV light. The mass ratio of PS to PEGDA affects the morphology of the fibers as well as the loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) for ME. Under optimal test conditions, the diameter of the fibers was 1.70 μm, and the ME loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency were (7.80 ± 0.07%) and (85.84 ± 7.94%). The combination of PS and PEGDA was confirmed by FTIR analysis, while its excellent thermal stability was verified through TGA testing. In the PS/PEGDA-ME-UV membrane, the cumulative release rate of ME reached 81.97% by week 8, which conformed to a first-order model. In the trapping experiments, a 53% rate of Bactrocera dorsalis capture was maintained even by week 8, demonstrating its potential for application in agricultural biocontrol.

Root-knot nematode diseases cause severe yield and economic losses each year in global agricultural production.Virgibacillus dokdonensisMCCC 1A00493, a deep-sea bacterium, shows a significant nematicidal activity againstMeloidogyne incognitain vitro. However, information about the active substances ofV. dokdonensisMCCC 1A00493 is limited. In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) fromV. dokdonensisMCCC 1A00493 were isolated and analyzed through solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Four VOCs, namely, acetaldehyde, dimethyl disulfide, ethylbenzene, and 2-butanone, were identified, and their nematicidal activities were evaluated. The four VOCs had a variety of active modes onM. incognitajuveniles. Acetaldehyde had direct contact killing, fumigation, and attraction activities; dimethyl disulfide had direct contact killing and attraction activities; ethylbenzene had an attraction activity; and 2-butanone had a repellent activity. Only acetaldehyde had a fumigant activity to inhibit egg hatching. Combining this fumigant activity against eggs and juveniles could be an effective strategy to control the different developmental stages ofM. incognita. The combination of direct contact and attraction activities could also establish trapping and killing strategies against root-knot nematodes. Considering all nematicidal modes or strategies, we could useV. dokdonensisMCCC 1A00493 to set up an integrated strategy to control root-knot nematodes. Keywords:virgibacillus dokdonensis;Meloidogyne incognita;volatile organic compound;fumigant;attraction;repellent;integrated strategy

There is currently a lack of effective olfaction-based techniques to control diamondback moth (DBM) larvae. Identifying behaviorally active odorants for DBM larvae and exploring their recognition mechanisms can provide insights into olfaction-based larval control strategies. Through the two-choice assay, (E,E)-2,6-farnesol (farnesol) was identified as a compound exhibiting significant attractant activity toward DBM larvae, achieving an attraction index of 0.48 ± 0.13. PxylGOBP1 and PxylGOBP2, highly expressed in the antennae of DBM larvae, both showed high affinity toward farnesol. RNAi technology was used to knock down PxylGOBP1 and PxylGOBP2, revealing that the attraction of DBM larvae to farnesol nearly vanished following the knockdown of PxylGOBP2, indicating its critical role in recognizing farnesol. Further investigation into the PxylGOBP2-farnesol interaction revealed the importance of residues like Thr9, Trp37, and Phe118 in PxylGOBP2’s binding to farnesol. This research is significant for unveiling the olfactory mechanisms of DBM larvae and developing larval behavior regulation techniques.

Background Chemical pesticides face significant challenges regarding their efficacy and environmental impact. Plant-based food attractants have emerged as a promising green alternative for pest control. However, their field application is limited by the short duration of effectiveness, necessitating improved carrier systems for sustained release. Electrospinning is a promising technology in this field, with core-shell fibers offering superior performance in efficient loading and sustained release compared to uniaxial fibers, highlighting their potential for further development. Results In this study, core-shell micro-nano fiber mats were prepared via coaxial electrospinning using multiple environmentally friendly polymers. These mats were firstly and successfully loaded with food attractants bisexually attractive to Loxostege sticticalis adults, including 1-octen-3-ol, trans-2-hexenal, linalool, and anethole, enabling sustained release and effective trapping. The components in the core-shell spinning solution were chemically compatible, and after spinning, the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)/polycaprolactone (PHB/PCL) in the shell layer and polyethylene oxide (PEO) in the core layer formed core-shell fibers with clear boundaries. The mats achieved an average encapsulation efficiency of 78% for active ingredients, with a sustained release profile that delivered over 60% of the attractants within 80 days while mitigating early burst release. Electroantennogram and behavioral studies revealed that the mats retained electrophysiological activity for at least 90 days, effectively attracting male and female adult insects even after 75 days. Field trials demonstrated that the mats significantly outperformed commercial slow-release carriers, attracting a higher number of L. sticticalis adults. Additionally, the mats exhibited strong stress resistance, biodegradability, and environmental compatibility, effectively protecting active molecules while minimizing ecological impact. Conclusion sThe developed fiber mats provide a highly efficient, eco-friendly carrier for plant-based food attractants, offering prolonged efficacy and improved insect trapping performance. This study highlights their potential for sustainable agriculture and pest management, paving the way for greener alternatives to chemical pesticides.Graphical abstract

Hyphantria cunea , a globally significant quarantine pest, causes severe ecological and economic impacts in invaded regions. Attractants are environment-friendly and valuable pest management tools for H. cunea control. In this study, we identified that the combination of β-ocimene with sex pheromone components was strongly attractive to H. cunea males. This attractant combination activates the Ras signaling pathway and stimulates Ca 2+ in male adults following exposure. Feeding and oviposition behavior results demonstrated that H. cunea prefers Morus alba over Platanus × acerifolia , Metasequoia glyptostroboides , and Taxodium distichum . In the fresh branches of M. alba with leaves, the relative abundance of β-ocimene (36.33 ± 0.41 %) was significantly higher than the other hosts. Electroantennography recordings, behavioral choice assays, and field trapping trials showed that the combination of β-ocimene with sex pheromone components significantly enhanced male response and attraction. The number of trapped males using β-ocimene/ sex pheromone blend was 3.7-fold higher than that of sex pheromone or β-ocimene alone in the field, indicating a synergistic effect of adding β-ocimene to sex pheromone. The molecular mechanism of β-ocimene/sex pheromone synergism was further analyzed. After exposure to the attractant, the Ras signaling pathway in the heads of males are activated ( HcILP and HcPLCε1 are upregulated, while HcRasGAP and HcPLD are downregulated), which further stimulates the expression of IP3 and Ca 2+ . The activation of Ca 2+ may be the key reason for its higher attraction to males. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the selection and mechanistic understanding of attractants for H. cunea , offering insights for attractant-based pest control strategies.

In this study, four kinds of chemical substances (2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine, β-ionone, citronellal, and paeonol), three kinds of plant essential oils (tea tree essential oil, lavender essential oil, and myrrh essential oil), and their combinations were selected to explore their synergistic effects on tobacco beetle [Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae)] adults by the behavioral test and laboratory simulation test. Behavioral test results showed that some of the combinations revealed a synergistic effect on tobacco beetle adults, especially the sexual attractant +2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine + β-ionone + citronellal + paeonol (SABCD, one portion of sexual attractant, and 1 mg/L synergistic substances) combination and the food attractant +2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine + paeonol (FAD, 1 ml of food attractant and 1 mg/L synergistic substances) combination showed the best behavioral effect on tobacco beetle adults with average dwell times of 120.97 and 126.74 s, respectively, compared to those of other combinations. Meanwhile, SABCD had the highest selection rate [89.47%, about 1.5 times that of the sexual attractant (S)] on tobacco beetle adults compared with those of other combinations. In addition, laboratory simulation test results showed that the SABCD combination had the highest average selection rate (37.31%, about 2 times that of S) on tobacco beetle adults at 1 mg/L. However, our results showed that there was no significant difference in the indoor simulation results of food attractant synergistic substances. Our results will provide guidance for the development of new pesticides for tobacco beetle adults.
