Fe/Mn Multilayer Nanowires as High-Performance T1-T2 Dual Modal MRI Contrast Agents

Xiaoming Cao,Liyuan Gu,Shike Hu,Aiman Mukhtar,Kaiming Wu

A lot of nanomaterials are using T1-T2dual mode magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents (CAs), but multilayer nanowire (NW) with iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) as T1-T2dual modal CAs has not been reported yet. Herein, we synthesized a Fe/Mn multilayer NW with an adjustable Fe layer, as T1-T2dual-mode CAs. The relaxation performance of Fe/Mn multilayer NW was studied at 1.5 T. Results show that, when the length of the Fe layer is about 10 nm and the Mn is about 5 nm, the r1value (21.8 mM−1s−1) and r2value (74.8 mM−1s−1) of the Fe/Mn multilayer NW are higher than that of Mn NW (3.7 mM−1s−1) and Fe NW (59.3 mM−1s−1), respectively. We predict that our Fe/Mn multilayer NW could be used as T1-T2dual mode MRI CAs in the near future. Keywords:dual modal;MRI;CAs;nanowire;relaxation

Large electric field induced strain of Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ceramics textured by Template Grain Growth

Hongrui Jia,Weitong Zhu,Shuai Yang,Fei Li,Linghang Wang

<001> oriented x Bi(Mg 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 -(0.7- x )Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.3PbTiO 3 (BMT-PMN-PT) textured ceramics are successfully fabricated by the template grain growth method using BaTiO 3 platelets as template. BMT-PMN-PT textured ceramics with different BMT contents are studied in terms of crystal structure, microstructures, dielectric and ferroelectric properties, and electric field induced strain. The as-fabricated BMT-PMN-PT textured ceramics were found to have a strong orientation along <001> direction. The frequency dispersion of dielectric constant of BMT-PMN-PT textured ceramics increases gradually and its relaxability becomes stronger with increasing BMT content. A large electric-field induced strain (0.42 % at 4 kV/mm) is obtained in 0.25BMT-0.45PMN-0.3PT textured ceramics with Lotgering factor 0.94, which is about 83 % enhancement than that of the randomly oriented ceramics (0.23 % at 4 kV/mm). The strain of 0.25BMT-0.45PMN-0.3PT textured ceramics have a relatively high thermal stability, with a slight decrease from 0.42 % to 0.28 % in the temperature range of 20−100 °C. Our research suggests that 0.25BMT-0.45PMN-0.3PT textured ceramics have a greatly potential for actuator devices applications owing to its advantages of large electric field induced strain response.

A supramolecular brush polymer via the self-assembly of bridged tris(β-cyclodextrin) with a porphyrin derivative and its magnetic resonance imaging

Mo Sun,Heng-Yi Zhang,Qian Zhao,Xin-Yue Hu,Li-Hua Wang,Bo-Wen Liu,Yu Liu

Accurate imaging of soft tissues is one of the ultimate goals in biomedical imaging. Different imaging modalities can improve their disadvantages, and promote the imaging ability. However, once an imaging agent has been prepared, it is usually hard to adjust it according to the actual needs. Herein, we developed a supramolecular brush polymer (SBP) as a versatile imaging agent platform. The SBP platform (SBPP) is constructed by the intermolecular inclusion complexation of bridged tris(β-cyclodextrin) (1) with Mn(III)-porphyrin-bearing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains (Mn(III)-TPP), and can further bind other functional groups by host–guest interactions of cyclodextrin and adamantine. The SBPP is characterized by UV/vis absorption spectroscopy, NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We demonstrated that this SBPP not only has no cellular toxicity against NIH 3T3 cells in in vitro cell experiments, but it also shows an efficient enhanced T1 relaxivity in in vitro MR imaging experiments. When used as multifunctional imaging agents, different imaging probes and/or targeting agents can be introduced to this SBPP as needed through simple host–guest interactions. In in vitro imaging experiments, it shows accurate imaging of different kinds of cancer cells by choosing on-demand targeting agents. These results suggest a promising strategy for engineering multifunctional imaging agents with SBPs.

Magnetic relaxation switching sensor based on self-generated porous Fe3O4 with controllable apparent diffusion coefficient for highly sensitive detection of caffeine

Tong Mu,Yudie Hu,Li Wen,Li Ding,Maolong Chen,Yunhui Cheng,Li Yao,Zhou Xu

Magnetic relaxation switch (MRS) sensors based on magnetic nanoparticles have received much attention in the field of environmental monitoring due to their rapid response and resistance to complex matrix interference. However, conventional MRS (cMRS) sensors constructed using magnetic nanoparticles have low sensitivity due to the lower relaxation rate of the magnetic probe. In this study, self-generated porous Fe 3 O 4 were employed in the MRS sensors for detection of caffeine, and the regulation of transverse relaxation performance by porous structure has been explored. The abundant porous structure of self-generated porous Fe 3 O 4 restricted the diffusion of the surrounding water molecules, and the controllable pore size can effectively adjust the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), as a result, improving the transverse relaxation properties. The developed MRS sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range from 0.5 to 100 ng/mL and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.047 ng/mL for caffeine. The LOD is 12 times lower than that of cMRS sensors. Consequently, the MRS sensor was further applied to the detection of caffeine in surface water samples. The results were consistent with those detected using high-performance liquid chromatography, demonstrating its superior anti-interference ability and the significant potential in environmental monitoring and food safety domains.

Ligand-Induced Atomically Segregation-Tunable Alloy Nanoprobes for Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Zeyu Liang,Shangzhi Xie,Qiyue Wang,Bo Zhang,Lin Xiao,Chenhan Wang,Xun Liu,Ying Chen,Shengfei Yang,Hui Du,Yufan Qian,Daishun Ling,Lianming Wu,Fangyuan Li

Bimetallic iron-noble metal alloy nanoparticles have emerged as promising contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to their biocompatibility and facile control over the element distribution. However, the inherent surface energy discrepancy between iron and noble metal often leads to Fe atom segregation within the nanoparticle, resulting in limited iron–water molecule interactions and, consequently, diminished relaxometric performance. In this study, we present the development of a class of ligand-induced atomically segregation-tunable alloy nanoprobes (STAN) composed of bimetallic iron–gold nanoparticles. By manipulating the oxidation state of Fe on the particle surface through varying molar ratios of oleic acid and oleylamine ligands, we successfully achieve surface Fe enrichment. Under the application of a 9 T MRI system, the optimized STAN formulation, characterized by a surface Fe content of 60.1 at %, exhibits an impressive r1 value of 2.28 mM–1·s–1, along with a low r2/r1 ratio of 6.2. This exceptional performance allows for the clear visualization of hepatic tumors as small as 0.7 mm in diameter in vivo, highlighting the immense potential of STAN as a next-generation contrast agent for highly sensitive MR imaging.
