The fatigue behavior of Bi 0.5 Na 0.4 K 0.1 TiO 3 -based ceramics depends on the polarity. While the non-ergodic relaxor ceramics have large residual polarization but poor fatigue behavior, the ergodic relaxor ceramics have excellent fatigue resistance but tiny residual polarization. Therefore, obtaining ferroelectric ceramics with high residual polarization and excellent fatigue resistance is challenging due to the trade-off between non-ergodic relaxor and ergodic relaxor. Here, we modulate the free energy barrier by doping relaxant Nb to achieve the coexistence of non-ergodic and ergodic relaxor phases. At 0.6% Nb doping, the residual polarization is large at 2 P r = 49.3 µC/cm 2 , increased to 54.23 µC/cm 2 after 10 2 cycles and decreased to 53.04 µC/cm 2 after 10 5 cycles, indicating good fatigue resistance behavior. The large residual polarization is due to the metastable ferroelectric state, while the excellent fatigue resistance may be attributed to the field-induced ferroelectric-relaxor phase transition.

Sonocatalysis has received much attention due to its ability to completely degrade organic matter without secondary contamination. However, there are still different opinions about the factors affecting sonocatalysis, such as the role of the piezoelectric coefficient in the sonocatalytic process needs to be clarified. To understand the influence of piezoelectric coefficient, Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -xSrTiO 3 (NBT-xST, 0.20 ≤x ≤ 0.30) with different piezoelectric coefficients and different phase states (ferroelectric phase/relaxor) were obtained. The sonocatalytic experiments revealed a significant correlation between the piezoelectric coefficient and the catalytic performance in the ferroelectric phase. Still, more influencing factors need to be considered in the relaxor region.

The structure and electric properties of 5 mol. % LiNbO 3 doped x BiScO 3 –(95- x )PbTiO 3 (5LN– x BS–(95- x )PT, 26 ≤ x ≤ 41 mol. %) ceramics have been systematically investigated. The composition-, temperature- and electric-field-dependent phase transitions were established carefully by the temperature-dependent dielectric measurements. The results verified that the 5LN– x BS–(95- x )PT system transformed to nonergodic relaxors (NR) phase gradually from normal ferroelectrics (FE) phase with the addition of BiScO 3 contents. With the increase of temperature, ergodic relaxors (ER) phase was observed before the phase transition from FE and/or NR to paraelectrics (PE) phase. By comparing the dielectric responses of the ceramics before and after polarization, it was confirmed that the electric field could induce a phase transition from NR to FE while the ceramics were polarized, which was attributed to the growth of the dipole clusters and the permutation of the macroscopical ferroelectric order under the external electric field. The phase diagram of 5LN– x BS–(95- x )PT system was then built and the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between tetragonal and rhombohedral phase of the system was identified at 34 ≤ x ≤ 36. The optimal properties were found at the composition of 5LN–34BS–61PT ceramic with piezoelectric coefficient d 33 value of 514 pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling factor k p of 0.47, relative dielectric constant ε r of 2511, and remnant polarization P r of 37.4 μC/cm 2 . The displayed piezoelectric properties could provide alternative compositions with less lead contents comparing with the Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 based piezoceramics.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of the [0.852(Bi 0.5-x Sr x Na 0.5 )-0.11(Bi 0.5 K 0.5 )-0.038Ba]Ti (1-x) Ta x O 3 (designated as BNKT-BT-xTaSr) ternary system were prepared with co-doping of Ta 5+ and Sr 2+ . The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of co-doping of Ta and Sr element on the microstructure, phase structure electrical properties, and electrostrain behavior of BNKT-BT-xTaSr ceramics. With the increase of Ta 5+ and Sr 2+ doping, the transition temperature ( T F-R ) of the modified doped BNKT-BT-xTaSr ceramics from ferroelectric to relaxed phase decreases to below room temperature (RT). When x = 0.005, the BNKT-BT-xTaSr ceramics reached a large electrostrain of 0.46%( d * 33 = 657 p.m./V) at RT under an electric field of 7 kV/mm, which is caused by the transition from ergodic relaxor phase to ferroelectric phase under a high applied electrical field. In addition, the electrostrain is increased to 0.48% ( d * 33 = 685 p.m./V) under the same electric field after the thermal aging process at 80 °C for two weeks. This study demonstrates that the A/B site co-doping could effectively improve the electrostrain properties of BNKT-BT-xTaSr ferroelectric ceramics .

SrTiO 3 -modified lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, (0.93- x )Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 - x SrTiO 3 -0.06BaTiO 3 -0.01 K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 [(BNT- x ST)-BT-KNN, x = 0-0.06], were prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The XRD structure analysis and electric properties characteristics revealed the ST-induced phase transformation from the ferroelectric phase to the relaxor phase and their coexistence state. Benefiting from the ST-destructed ferroelectric long-range orders, the high normalized strain value of 600 pm/V was obtained in the (BNT-0.02ST)-BT-KNN ceramic at 5 kV/mm. The ST-generated relaxor phase was found to have a constructive effect on improving the temperature stability and restraining the hysteresis of the electric-field-induced strain. The normalized strain of (BNT-0.06ST)-BT-KNN ceramics could be kept at a high value ~337 pm/V at elevated temperature up to 120°C.

Electrostrictive materials have been actively studied for applications in precision machinery, laser communication, and biological microscopy due to their numerous advantages, including high resolution, negligible hysteresis, low heat dissipation, and fast response. Nevertheless, simultaneously achieving high strain and low hysteresis in electrostrictive materials presents a great challenge, impeding the development of high precision positioning devices. In this study, we designed a critical phase point where the relaxor state coexists with the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases, offering a favorable environment for the reversible transition from the ergodic relaxor state to an unstable long-range ordered ferroelectric state under an external electric field, enabling a high electrostrictive strain. To achieve this strategy, we introduced a strong relaxor component by incorporating a Nd dopant into Pb(Mg1/3Nb3/2)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN–PT) ceramics, thereby enhancing local structural heterogeneity. The resulting 4%Nd-doped 0.69PMN–0.31PT ceramic exhibits an excellent electrostrictive strain of 0.22% with a highly effective piezoelectric strain coefficient Smax/Emax = 730 pm V−1 at 30 kV cm−1, superior to those of previously reported electrostrictive ceramics and most piezoelectric ceramics. Moreover, the 4%Nd-doped 0.69PMN–0.31PT ceramic demonstrates favorable temperature stability, maintaining an electrostrictive strain of 0.15% at temperatures up to 80 °C. This work provides an effective way to obtain high-performance electrostrictive materials via synergistically enhancing local structural heterogeneity and designing a morphotropic relaxor phase boundary.

BNT-based piezoelectric ceramics have garnered considerable attention owing to their potential to exhibit large electrostrain. However, irreversible phase transitions and domain structure alterations lead to limited effective strain and poor temperature stability, which restricts their application in high-precision displacement devices, representing a major bottleneck in current research. In this study, 0.82Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 –0.18Bi 0.5 K 0.5 TiO 3 (BNKT) was selected as the base composition, and an A/B-site co-doping strategy was employed to develop a (Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 )HfO 3 (BSH) composite modification system. By precisely adjusting the BSH doping concentration ( x = 0–0.03), the ferroelectric – relaxor phase transition temperature ( T F-R ) was effectively shifted to below room temperature, thereby significantly lowering the field-induced phase transition energy barrier. Finally, the BNKT-0.02BSH ceramic exhibits a high piezoelectric strain coefficient ( d 33 ∗) of 648 pm/V under an electric field of 65 kV/cm, along with a strain response of 0.475 % at 80 kV/cm. Meanwhile, the strain stability remains above 85 % over the temperature range of 30–100 °C. Multi-scale characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy, confirmed that the improved performance enhancement is attributed to BSH modification, which increases local structural heterogeneity and significantly promotes electric field-induced reversible phase transitions between the relaxor to ferroelectric states. This study offers novel insights into the understanding of the composition-structure-property relationship.
