The increasing importance of flexible piezoelectric sensors in the Internet of Things (IoT) is driven by their self-powering capabilities, rapid response times, and high linearity. However, achieving the intrinsic flexibility of inorganic piezoelectric materials to produce highly sensitive flexible piezoelectric sensors remains a challenge. Furthermore, existing piezoelectric sensors remain incapable of distinguishing bending angles in the range of 0–360°. In this work, highly oriented PbZr 0.52 Ti 0.48 O 3 (PZT) fiber films with a bending curvature radius of less than 2 mm were fabricated through electrospinning and optimized sintering process. The flexibility of the PZT fiber films was attributed to the nanoscale ultrafine grains (∼14 nm), which led to stress relaxation at the grain boundaries. The piezoelectric sensor fabricated with these intrinsically flexible PZT fiber films exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity (0.46 V/kPa) and a fast response time (25 ms). The exceptional orientation of the PZT fiber film enhanced the ability of the sensor to recognize deformation angles. By superimposing two fiber films at a 45° angle, the prepared double-layer piezoelectric sensor could detect bending angles over the entire 0–360° range, marking the first achievement of full-angle strain detection in the field of piezoelectric sensors. Finally, a machine learning-based vector recognition system was developed to accurately determine both the magnitude and direction of strain. This work presents a novel strategy for detecting film deformation.

Flexible materials and devices that can simultaneously reflect multimodal information are highly desired for novel flexible electronics and intelligent flexible sensing systems. In this regard, flexible magnetic films have great potential for wireless multimodal flexible sensor due to the curvature and azimuth angle-dependent ferromagnetic resonance. However, a key challenge now is to build the precise relationship among the mechanical bending, azimuth angle, and the ferromagnetic resonance of the film, which involves multi-physics and coupled process. In this work, the physical problem is solved by combining material engineering and machine learning. Material domain engineering is applied to form localized multi-peak ferromagnetic resonance features for increasing sensitivity. Besides, convolutional neural network algorithm is utilized to help recognize the bending and azimuth angle modulated ferromagnetic resonance in flexible film systems. It is found that the bending information for the flexible film with engineered domain structure can be mapped to the ferromagnetic profile with accuracy over 99%, while the accuracy sharply decreases to less than 50% in the control group of high-quality film. This study provides a versatile platform for developing machine learning-based novel sensing materials.

Flexible pressure sensors, an important class of intelligent sensing devices, are widely explored in body-motion and medical health monitoring, artificial intelligence and human–machine interaction. As a unique layered nanomaterial, black phosphorus (BP) has excellent electrical, mechanical, and flexible characteristics, which make it a promising candidate for fabricating high-performance pressure sensors. Herein, hierarchically structured BP-based pressure sensors were constructed. The sensors exhibit high sensitivity, stability and a wide sensing range and respond to various human motions including finger pressure, swallowing, and wrist bending. The sensors can identify different handwriting processes with featured signals. In particular, benefiting from the unique structure of loose-dense layers, the sensors show a distinctive response to bending angles and directions, revealing a characteristic of direction recognition. This feature facilitates the sensors to monitor human motions. The sensors have been successfully powered by a home-made Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin-film solar cell, which demonstrates the sustainability, flexibility and low power consumption of integrated devices. This work offers a strategy to construct hierarchically structured pressure/strain sensors with direction recognition and provides further insights into manufacturing portable sensing devices for realistic and innovative applications.

To date, many efforts have been made in exploring flexible supercapacitors (SCs) to meet the balance between electrochemical and mechanical performance, which is currently still a grand challenge. In this study, we report the rationally designed editable and flexible electrode composed of SiC nanowires and carbon nanotubes (SiC/CNTs), which couples the excellent mechanical properties of SiC nanowires and the high conductivity of CNTs. The specific capacitance of such a self-supporting electrode could be up to 8.43 F g−1 at a current density of 0.02 A g−1, which is more than 4 times that of the pure SiC analogue (i.e., 1.77 F g−1). The soft-packaged SCs deliver high flexibility, as well as robust mechanical and electrochemical properties, which could be well maintained with nearly no change in the structure and performance against various bending angles. Additionally, the flexible SCs are robust for wide-temperature operation from −30 °C to 50 °C, with capacitance retentions of 89.3% and 95.0% over 10 000 cycles at 50 °C and −30 °C, respectively. Moreover, they have long-term cycle stability for up to 14 000 cycles under progressively varied temperatures between −30 and 50 °C, presenting their promising applications as reliable energy storage devices that can operate under wide-temperature harsh conditions.

The soft actuators capable of responding to multiple stimuli and adapting to changing environments have attracted growing interest in the flexible multifunctional materials. However, how to achieve high degree of freedom (DoF), precise control, and complex shape transformation of the multi-stimuli responsive soft actuator, still remains challenging. Here, we report a multi-responsive soft actuator with various controllable sophisticated deformations by integrating a magnetically sensitive elastomer (MSE) with a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). Through regulating the stimuli strength and the geometrical dimensions and material parameters of elastomers, the bending angle and curling curvature of the actuator are accurately controlled ranging from 0 to 58.9° and from 0.23 to 1.29 cm–1, respectively. The facile material-structural synergistic design drives the complex 3D shape deformations (e.g., bidirectional bending, shrinkage/bending, rolling/bending, and twisting/bending) of the actuator. More importantly, due to its photosensitive characteristics, the shape-morphing of the actuator can be manipulated locally and sequentially, which markedly enriches the DoFs. The flower-shaped actuator displays multiple deformation modes, and the hand-shaped actuator transforms between 8 gestures under the control of laser and magnetic field, proving that the multi-responsive soft actuators have great application potentials in future bioengineering, soft manipulators, and flexible electronics.

Advances in healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and soft robots require the development of wearable sensors that are efficient, scalable, and facile to prepare. Although laser-induced graphene (LIG) has recently attracted considerable attention in the fabrication of patterned graphene-based wearable sensors, the transfer process is inevitable due to the limited stretchability of carbon precursors. In this work, we proposed a strategy for in situ growth, transfer-free LIG on various flexible substrates (poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and paper). This was achieved by coating a biobased liquid carbon precursor (PGE-fa) on target substrates followed by laser irradiation under ambient conditions. After encapsulation, the fabricated flexible sensors were obtained. Based on the advantage of LIG in patterning, designs with different shapes and geometrical parameters were systematically investigated to optimize the sensing performance. The resulting LIG/PDMS sensor had a wide working range of ∼30% and demonstrated an ultrahigh sensitivity of 68,238.5 as well as outstanding stability over 10,000 cycles. Additionally, the sensor responded well to external stimuli at different bending angles. The potential applications of the sensor were further demonstrated by monitoring human motions, from subtle signals, including vocal cords, to large movements of the fingers and elbow joints.

Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built using AM-based networks, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant properties. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor showed high sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) of up to 8.35 at a strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of the above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting human movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.
