One-component waterborne in vivo cross-linkable polysiloxane coatings for artificial skin

Ping Li,Ailing Zhang,Shuxue Zhou

Polysiloxane-based artificial skins are able to emulate the mechanical and barrier performance of human skin. However, they are usually fabricated in vitro , restricting their diverse applications on human body. Herein, we presented one-component waterborne cross-linkable polysiloxane coatings prepared from emulsified vinyl dimethicone, emulsified hydrogen dimethicone, and Karstedt catalyst capsules that were first synthesized by solvent evaporation method. The coating had good storage stability and meanwhile could form an elastic film quickly through merging of silicone oil droplets and subsequent hydrosilylation reaction. It was found that the mass ratio of vinyl dimethicone emulsion/hydrogen dimethicone emulsion (V/H), and the dosage of Karstedt catalyst capsules (K/(V + H)) were critical to the curing time, morphology, and mechanical properties of the coatings. With appropriate values of V/H and K/(V + H), the polysiloxane film had the mechanical performance comparable to that from solvent-based one. The coating could be topically applied to human skin in vivo and in situ turned into an elastic, invisible thin film with good water resistance. In contrast to those reported polysiloxane materials, the one-component waterborne polysiloxane coating was nontoxic and convenient for in vivo application on human body, making it be a promising candidate as artificial skin in the fields of cosmetics, medical treatment, and E-skin.

Elastic Janus Microarray Film Strain Sensors with Heterogeneous Modulus and Conductivity for Healthcare and Braille Identification

He-Qing Shao,Kai-Dong Wei,Tao Gong,Jin Jia,Chun-Yan Tang,Xiang-Jun Zha,Kai Ke,Rui-Ying Bao,Kai Zhang,Yu Wang,Wei Yang

Most stretchable film strain sensors generally present nonlinear electrical responses to applied strain, leading to an inaccurate acquisition of sophisticated signals, difficult signal processing, and zero-calibration, which hampers practical applications severely. Here, a Janus hetero-structured microarray film sensor is developed by in-situ growth of silver nanoparticles on the surface of micro-patterned elastomer films fabricated via low-temperature imprinting followed by scraping-induced particle trapping. Heterogeneous property designs in both modulus and electrical conductivity via introducing polymer microarrays enable modulating the electron transport manner in the conductive layer of elastic Janus films upon stretching, allowing to tune signal linearity effectively. Therefore, such a hetero-structured film sensor shows good signal linearity (fluctuation of gauge factor [GF] below ±0.02) and relatively high sensitivity (GF > 10) within 55% strain, a detection limit of 0.2% strain, and a response/recovery time of 16.3/46.9 ms, respectively. Correspondingly, it enables monitoring human respiration and body motion with higher resolution compared with the nonlinear one, meanwhile, it is capable of detecting tiny pressure to discriminate braille alphabets via touch identification. Overall, it unveils a simple strategy to fabricate film strain sensors for high-resolution healthcare and body motion monitoring, as well as electronic skins toward tactile sensing and touch identification.

Elastic films of single-crystal two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks

Yang Yonghang,Liang Baokun,Kreie Jakob,Hambsch Mike,Liang Zihao,Wang Cheng,Huang Senhe,Dong Xin,Gong Li,Liang Chaolun,Lou Dongyang,Zhou Zhipeng,Lu Jiaxing,Yang Yang,Zhuang Xiaodong,Qi Haoyuan,Kaiser Ute,Mannsfeld Stefan C. B.,Liu Wei,Gölzhäuser Armin,Zheng Zhikun

The properties of polycrystalline materials are often dominated by defects; two-dimensional (2D) crystals can even be divided and disrupted by a line defect 1 , 2 , 3 . However, 2D crystals are often required to be processed into films, which are inevitably polycrystalline and contain numerous grain boundaries, and therefore are brittle and fragile, hindering application in flexible electronics, optoelectronics and separation 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . Moreover, similar to glass, wood and plastics, they suffer from trade-off effects between mechanical strength and toughness 5 , 6 . Here we report a method to produce highly strong, tough and elastic films of an emerging class of 2D crystals: 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composed of single-crystal domains connected by an interwoven grain boundary on water surface using an aliphatic bi-amine as a sacrificial go-between. Films of two 2D COFs have been demonstrated, which show Young’s moduli and breaking strengths of 56.7 ± 7.4 GPa and 73.4 ± 11.6 GPa, and 82.2 ± 9.1 N m −1 and 29.5 ± 7.2 N m −1 , respectively. We predict that the sacrificial go-between guided synthesis method and the interwoven grain boundary will inspire grain boundary engineering of various polycrystalline materials, endowing them with new properties, enhancing their current applications and paving the way for new applications.

An 8-Micrometer-Thick Film Strain Sensor with Conformal 3D Microstructure for Accurate Detection of Body Motion and Air Leakage

Qi Jing,Tao Gong,He-Qing Shao,Yu-Jie Wu,Jia-Xing Guo,Kai Ke,Lei Gong,Yong Cao,Zheng-Ying Liu,Wei Yang

Elastomer-based resistive super-thin film strain sensors show great application potentials in electronic skins, human–machine interaction systems, wearable devices for healthcare, and machine learning algorithms. However, it is challenging to accurately monitor the deformation of human body joints and organs with curved surfaces (e.g., knees, throats, finger joints) by only taking advantage of material thickness and elasticity of conventional 2D film strain sensors. Herein, a simple strategy is developed to fabricate conformal elastomeric thin film sensors with periodic 3D microstructure inspired by the ridges and valleys of human skin for accurate signal acquisition. Specifically, an 8-micrometer-thick elastic film strain sensor with 3D microstructure is fabricated via thermoforming followed by in situ chemical growth of silver nanoparticles. The 3D film strain sensors exhibit excellent signal linearity (R 2 = 0.99) and relatively high sensitivity (gauge factor = 14) over a relatively wide strain range (≈43%), with an ultra-low strain detection limit of 0.025%, enabling potential applications in human healthcare monitoring and air leakage detection. Thus, this study unveils a simple methodology to process microstructure-enabled conformable 3D film strain sensors, which show good conformability and multiple mechanical sensing functions for advancing the development of next-generation flexible strain sensors.

A honeybee stinger-inspired self-interlocking microneedle patch and its application in myocardial infarction treatment

Yuwen Lu,Tanchen Ren,Hua Zhang,Qiao Jin,Liyin Shen,Mengqi Shan,Xinzhe Zhao,Qichao Chen,Haoli Dai,Lin Yao,Jieqi Xie,Di Ye,Tengxiang Lin,Xiaoqian Hong,Kaicheng Deng,Ting Shen,Jiazhen Pan,Mengyan Jia,Jun Ling,Peng Li,Yue Zhang,Huanan Wang,Lenan Zhuang,Changyou Gao,Jifu Mao,Yang Zhu

Weak tissue adhesion remains a major challenge in clinical translation of microneedle patches. Mimicking the structural features of honeybee stingers, stiff polymeric microneedles with unidirectionally backward-facing barbs were fabricated and embedded into various elastomer films to produce self-interlocking microneedle patches. The spirality of the barbing pattern was adjusted to increase interlocking efficiency. In addition, the micro-bleeding caused by microneedle puncturing adhered the porous surface of the patch substrate to the target tissue via coagulation. In the demonstrative application of myocardial infarction treatment, the bioinspired microneedle patches firmly fixed on challenging beating hearts, significantly reduced cardiac wall stress and strain in the infarct, and maintained left ventricular function and morphology. In addition, the microneedle patch was minimally invasively implanted onto beating porcine heart in 10 minutes, free of sutures and adhesives. Therefore, the honeybee stinger-inspired microneedles could provide an adaptive and convenient means to implant patches for various medical applications. Statement of significance Adhesion between tissue and microneedle patches with smooth microneedles is usually weak. We introduce a novel barbing method of fabricating unidirectionally backward facing barbs with controllable spirality on the microneedles on microneedle patches. The microneedle patches self-interlock on mechanically dynamic beating hearts, similar to honeybee stingers. The micro-bleeding and coagulation on the porous surface provide additional adhesion force. The microneedle patches attenuate left ventricular remodeling via mechanical support and are compatible with minimally invasive implantation.
