Boosted mechanical properties of sintered MoLa alloys with ultrafine-grains by the nanostructuring of secondary phase

Dezhi Wang,Yao Lu,Xinli Liu,Bohua Duan,Zhuangzhi Wu

The secondary phase particles of La 2 O 3 play a crucial role in the determination of the yield strength over MoLa alloys, but few work focuses on their intrinsic modulation of shape and size. Herein, a nanostructuring strategy of the secondary phase particles is proposed to enhance the mechanical performances of MoLa alloys, in which the shape and size effects of secondary phase particles have been discussed. Moreover, the strengthening mechanism is also analyzed. It is found that the La 2 O 3 nanospheres with a small size of 84 nm exhibit the best strengthening ability, leading to a high yield strength of 765 MPa in the sintered state. Smaller particles are easily involved into the Mo matrix interior to be intragranular, which are beneficial for the further strengthening. The strengthening contributions are quantitatively calculated, providing a predicted yield strength value, which is in good agreement with the measured one.

Effect of titanium-based additives on the strengthening of tungsten composites

Dezhi Wang,Ningyuan Xing,Kai Li,Ye Gao,Yanzhen Lu,Zhuangzhi Wu

To meet the high demand of tungsten alloy matrix wires for photovoltaic slicing, new high performance tungsten composites are explored and the effect of various Ti-based additives on the mechanical properties of tungsten is systematically discussed as well as the corresponding strength improvement mechanism. It is found that the W-TiB 2 exhibits the best mechanical properties with an ultimate tensile strength of 292.3 MPa and a compressive strength of 2370 MPa (a strain of 35%), approximately 96.1% and 28.5% higher than those of pure tungsten, respectively. Besides, the TiB 2 additive also triggers a slight toughening with a transgranular fracture . The enhanced strength should be attributed to the reaction between TiB 2 and adsorbed/dissolved oxygen, in which a new second phase of TiO 2 is generated with a small amount of Ti elements solidly dissolved into the W matrix, resulting in enhanced binding ability among grain boundaries and distorted lattices.

Effect of size-variant 2D MXene on strengthening mechanism in metal matrix composites

Yuchao Fan,Xu Mei,Beibei Liu,Jianfeng Wang,Li Ye,Yingjiu Zhang,Xinjian Li

The size of reinforcements is a pivotal and conventional parameter in metal matrix composites . Based on the distinctive preparation process of MXene , this research introduces a novel strategy to tailor the size of Ti 3 C 2 T x through the controlled ball milling of its precursor, Ti 3 AlC 2 . This approach fabricated Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets with sizes of 4.7 µm, 1.8 µm, and 0.6 µm. Subsequently, these Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets are incorporated into a magnesium (Mg) matrix composite to investigate the effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x size on the strengthening performance. The findings reveal a trend wherein the compressive yield strength (CYS) of the Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZK61 composites increases and the failure strain decreases with the decreased size of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Incorporating 4.7 µm Ti 3 C 2 T x results in an 11.0% reduction in CYS coupled with a 50% increase in failure strain. Incorporating 1.8 µm Ti 3 C 2 T x leads to a 4.6% increase in CYS with a 6.5% increase in failure strain. Incorporating 0.6 µm Ti 3 C 2 T x leads to a 10.7% increase in CYS with a 3.2% increase in failure strain.

Sintering polycrystalline silicon carbide composite ceramics with ultra-high hardness under high pressure

Peihong He,Yulei He,Wenjia Liang,Haidong Long,Ling Ran,Peng Yang,Fang Peng

Silicon carbide (SiC) is an important structural ceramic material, exhibiting exceptional comprehensive properties that are unmatched by metals and other structural materials. In this study, a combination of α-SiC micron powder and β-SiC nanopowder was utilized as precursor materials for high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) sintering. Under a pressure of 5.0 GPa, polycrystalline SiC samples with mixed grain size were sintered within a temperature range from 1000 to 1700 °C, and compared with SiC samples sintered from single micron powder under identical temperature and pressure conditions. The microstructures of the two sets of SiC samples were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the stress states and strengthening mechanisms among SiC grains with mixed grain size under HPHT were further analyzed in conjunction with X-ray diffraction results. The polycrystalline SiC composite ceramics sintered at 1700 °C exhibited superior mechanical and thermal properties, achieving a Vickers hardness of 35.2 GPa that is 23.5 % higher than that obtained by conventional spark plasma sintering and even surpassing the hardness of single crystal SiC, demonstrating thermal stability up to 1405 °C in air environment. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to analyze defects and plastic deformation in these samples. The study suggests that the primary strengthening mechanisms of the sintered polycrystalline SiC composite ceramics under HPHT include the increase in micro defects induced by in-situ plastic deformation at elevated temperatures and the effects of high-temperature creep. This study provides new insights into the HPHT sintering of hard materials.

Decomposition Behavior and Strengthening Mechanism of Ti-TiO2 Material in Selective Laser Melting Process

Xiang Hongliang,Chen Xiaoyu,Huang Ye,Wu Chaochao,Mou Gang,Zheng Kaikui

This study investigated the fabrication of a strengthened Ti-TiO 2 material with adding 0.5 wt.% TiO 2 nanoparticles via selective laser melting process in comparison with CP-Ti. Through the process parameters optimized by response surface methodology, the Ti-TiO 2 material fabricated by SLM showed remarkable tensile strength of 800.6 MPa and elongation of 14%, as compared to the fabricated CP-Ti with tensile strength of 594.0 MPa and elongation of 21%. The x-ray diffraction patterns of fabricated specimens showed the expansion of the hcp -Ti lattice along the c -axis due to dissolved oxygen atoms from the decomposition of TiO 2 nanoparticles. The microstructure analysis observed remains of incompletely decomposed TiO 2 and TiO phases in SLMed Ti-TiO 2 material, which was distinguished from former studies. Consequently, the decomposition behavior of added TiO 2 nanoparticles associated with the dissolved oxygen in the Ti-matrix during the SLM process was discussed. Based on the evaluation of both the solution effect of oxygen atoms and the reinforcing effect of undecomposed nanoparticles, the dissolved oxygen from decomposed TiO 2 was considered the primary factor in the intensified strength of SLMed Ti-TiO 2 material. These results could offer novel insights into the additive manufacturing of high-strength and biocompatible titanium alloy via the SLM process.

Interfacial properties and strengthening mechanisms of few-layered MXene reinforced Mg-based composites

Xiaohao Sun,Xiao Wang,Tongxin Di,Debao Liu

In the present study, MXene-reinforced Mg matrix composites were manufactured via the electrostatic self-assembly protocol and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process to develop lightweight materials with high mechanical performance. Uniform dispersion of MXene sheets was achieved in MXene/AZ91 composites. A unique interfacial structure was confirmed in these composites, which exhibited an ultrafine MgO interlayer (grain size of ∼10 nm) coherently incorporated or intercalated into MXene layers. The unique interfacial structure contributed to robust interfacial bonding between MXene sheets and Mg matrix, resulting in a substantial mechanical performance enhancement. The yield strength of 325.3 ± 7.9 MPa and elongation of 8.8 ± 0.2% were achieved in 0.3vol% MXene/AZ91 composites, showing a significantly high strengthening efficiency of 159.1 without sacrificing ductility. Quantitatively investigation of strengthening behavior manifested that the load-transfer effect was the primary strengthening mechanism in MXene/AZ91 composites, and the simulated strength was well-matched with experimental results due to the special interfacial structure and excellent dispersion properties. This study could offer significant guidance for developing novel lightweight materials with high mechanical performance for structural applications.

Effect of talc and titania on the microstructure and mechanical properties of alumina ceramics

Hui Yu,Zhihao Xu,Ziye Wei,Yongjun Chen,Jianbao Li,Lijie Luo

Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) ceramics were prepared with nucleating agent of titania (TiO 2 ) and fluxing agent of talc by the normal pressure sintering method. The effects of TiO 2 and talc on phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al 2 O 3 ceramics, as well the strengthening and toughening mechanism were investigated. It was found that the introduction of TiO 2 could be favorable for mullite formation and the improved densification of ceramics, resulting in improved mechanical properties of ceramics as well. Ceramics possess the best comprehensive mechanical performance with fracture toughness of 3.69 MPa·m 1/2 and flexural strength of 255.9 MPa when 4 wt.% TiO 2 and 15 wt.% talc were added. Mineral bridges and nanocrystallites were found in the glass-ceramics, which caused the deflection of cracks so that it strengthened the grain boundary and improved the mechanical properties of ceramics.

Investigation of the main strengthening mechanism of carbon nanotube reinforced aluminum composites

Kun Xie,Guopeng Zhang,Hai Huang,Jianjian Zhang,Zhongxia Liu,Bin Cai

The effects of carbon nanotube aspect ratio ( R ) on mechanical properties of CNT/Al composites containing 0–2.0 wt% CNTs are studied. The optimum carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum (Al) composites are fabricated at 580 °C for 1 h under 60 MPa, and subsequently hot extruded at 480 °C. CNT addition within 0.5 wt% can increase the strength significantly without plasticity loss, which overcomes the dilemma of strength and toughness. Strength and hardness increase significantly due to the uniformly distributed CNTs in Al matrix within a content of 1.0 wt%. Quantitatively fitting results also show that the main strengthening mechanism of CNT/Al composites should be dispersion strengthening rather than load transfer. The R , which is very crucial for load transfer theory, has only small effects on the mechanical properties of CNT/Al composites. The calculated CNTs diameters are close to the experimental used ones.

Investigation of the evolution and strengthening effect of aluminum carbide for in-situ preparation of carbon nanosheets/aluminum composites

Xinghai Liu,Enzuo Liu,Jiajun Li,Chunnian He,Naiqin Zhao

The interface plays a vital role in determining the microstructure and mechanical properties of metal matrix composites . The interfacial reactant, aluminum carbide (Al 4 C 3 ), has a great influence on the mechanical properties of carbon nanomaterials reinforced aluminum matrix composites (C/Al). However, due to the relatively weak controllability of Al–C interfacial reaction by traditional ex-situ methods, there is a lack of comprehensive study on the evolution and strengthening effects of Al 4 C 3 so far. In this study, Al 4 C 3 nanophase was produced by an appropriate annealing treatment from 500 °C to 630 °C in in-situ synthesized carbon nanosheets/aluminum composites (CNS/Al). The evolution and strengthening effects of Al 4 C 3 was investigated comprehensively. It was found that the formation of Al 4 C 3 plays a vital role in reducing the interfacial thermal expansion and improving the Al–C interfacial wettability . Thereby, a robust interfacial bonding among CNS, Al 4 C 3 and Al forms, resulting in the improvement of tensile strength of the composites. The tensile strength of the 1.0 wt%-CNS/Al composite after 30 min annealing at 600 °C reaches 245 MPa, which is ~113% higher than pure Al. The 22.3% of elongation exhibits a favorable strength-ductility balance. The main strengthening mechanisms are the Orowan dislocation strengthening, load transfer and grain refinement. The evolution of CNS and Al 4 C 3 combined with their strengthening contributions were quantitatively investigated in detail.

AlB12-AlB12C2-TiB2 hard and tough composites synthesized by reactive plasma activated sintering

Guoqiang Luo,Peng Fan,Kejia Kang,Rong Tu,Jian Zhang,Yi Sun,Qiang Shen,Lianmeng Zhang

AlB 12 -AlB 12 C 2 -TiB 2 -based hard and tough composites were fabricated using ball milled B, Al, and Ti powders as the starting materials, and sintered by reactive plasma activated sintering (PAS). The mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated, and the effects of the composition and microstructures on the reinforcing and toughening of the composites were determined. The results showed that the composite with 10 vol% TiB 2 showed excellent mechanical properties, a lightweight of 2.76 g cm −3 , Vickers hardness of 37 GPa, and fracture toughness of 7.1 MPa m 1/2 . In addition, the main strengthening and toughening mechanisms were due to the twin structures, dislocation defects, and stacking faults in the specimen in addition to grain pull-out, crack deflection, crack bridging, and crack branching caused by elongated TiB 2 particles.

High damage-tolerance bio-inspired B4C/2024Al composites with adjustable mechanical performance by tuning ceramic thickness

Yang Wang,Qiang Liu,Biao Zhang,Haoqian Zhang,Yicheng Jin,Zhaoxin Zhong,Jian Ye,Yuhan Ren,Feng Ye,Wen Wang

Freeze casting is a promising approach for assembling lamellar metal-ceramic composites with an exceptional combination of strength and toughness. Although these mechanical properties can be optimized by regulating the microstructure of porous ceramic structures, the effect of lamellar thickness is rarely mentioned, especially for B 4 C/Al composites. Herein, by controlling the freezing temperature, we used freeze casting to create nacre-like B 4 C scaffolds with identical ceramic content yet different lamellar thicknesses and then infiltrated them with 2024Al alloy. The effects of lamellar thickness on the damage-tolerance behavior and toughening mechanisms are discussed. The refinement of lamellae decreases the probability of observing catastrophic flaws in ceramic layers, increasing strength from 534 ± 14 to 578 ± 15 MPa and increasing crack-initiation toughness (K Ic ) from 9.2 ± 0.6 to 11.4 ± 0.2 MPa m 1/2 . These composites exhibit higher damage tolerance resulting from several toughening mechanisms, such as plastic deformation , crack deflection and blunting, and the uncracked-ligament bridging of ductile metal layers, which is reflected in the stable crack propagation during fracture and rising R-curve behavior. Importantly, coarsening of the structure of composites allows the fracture behaviors transform from single to multiple crack propagation, thus absorbing much more fracture energy, with the valid crack-growth toughness (K Jc ) enhancing markedly from 17.1 ± 2.4 to 29.8 ± 2.3 MPa m 1/2 .

Tensile properties and strengthening effects of 6061Al/12 wt%B4C composites reinforced with nano-Al2O3 particles

Xiaoxuan Pang,Yajiang Xian,Wei Wang,Pengcheng Zhang

Aluminum matrix Boron carbide composites is an important thermal neutron shielding material. In order to prepare 12 wt% B 4 C/6061Al composite with higher mechanical properties by powder metallurgy method, the new composite reinforced by Nano-Al 2 O 3 particles was fabricated by hot isostatic pressing in the semi-solid temperature range. The tensile properties and strengthening effects of the composite were investigated in this research. The tensile stress-strain curve of the composites was tested by material testing machine, and the microstructure and tensile fracture morphology of composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). The results indicated that the tensile strength of the composite was greatly improved by the addition of Nano-Al 2 O 3 , but the elongation decreased obviously. Nano-Al 2 O 3 particles had seriously affected the microstructure and fracture morphology of the composite and lead to the more obvious brittle fracture characteristics . Strengthening mechanisms of Nano-Al 2 O 3 particles reinforced 6061Al/B 4 C composite have been discussed, which reveals that grain boundary strengthening mainly plays the most important role.
