However, establishing reliable interfaces between inherently incompatible or immiscible soft materials remains a critical challenge for achieving dependable performance of interfacial flexible devices. Here, we employ a facile and generic in-situ photopolymerization method for fabricating imidazolium-based ionogels with intrinsically conductive, self-healing properties, enabling enhanced interfacial bonding. Our approach yields ionogels with exceptional properties, including robust adhesion (∼477 kPa), ultrahigh elasticity (∼1837% elongation), remarkable mechanical toughness (tensile and compressive strength of ∼1703 kPa and 12182 kPa, respectively), and high transparency (∼92% transmittance). Notably, our ionogels demonstrate great potential as sustainable flexible electronics with excellent recyclability . We develop a range of customizable devices with personalized structures, utilizing a combination of 3D printing, mold casting, and in-situ photocuring. Furthermore, the intrinsically conductive ionogel can serve as smart wearable sensors for real-time monitoring of human movements. Our work unlocks the potential for innovatively designing customizable ionogel devices with integrated functionalities that fulfill the mounting demand for high-performance interfacial flexible electronics.

Electroless Deposition Metals on Poly(dimethylsiloxane) with Strong Adhesion As Flexible and Stretchable Conductive Materials

Fu-Tao Zhang,Lu Xu,Jia-Hui Chen,Bo Zhao,Xian-Zhu Fu,Rong Sun,Qianwang Chen,Ching-Ping Wong

A new surface modification method is developed for electroless deposition of robust metal (copper, nickel, silver) layers on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate with strong adhesion. Under the synergies of the polydopamine (PDA), the plasma process enhances Ag+ reduction, and a thin Ag film is capable of tightly attaching to the PDMS surface, which catalyzes electroless deposition (ELD) to form robust metal layers on the PDMS surface with strong adhesion. Subsequently, a flexible and stretchable Cu-PDMS conductor is obtained through this method, showing excellent metallic conductivity of 1.2 × 107 S m–1, even at the longest stretch strain (700%). This process provides a successful strategy for obtaining good robust metal layers on PDMS and other polymer substrate surfaces with strong adhesion and conductivity.

Environment Endurable, Self-Healing, Super-Adhesive, and Mechanically Strong Ionogels for Reliable Sensing

Zhengxu Jin,Hongyan Liu,Huijuan Zhang

Ionogels possess high conductivity, stretchability, and adhesion, making them promising as flexible sensors. However, it remains challenging to fabricate an ionogel which integrates excellent environment endurance, superior mechanical strength, high self-healing efficiency, and super adhesion. Herein, a supramolecular ionic liquid is synthesized using calcium chloride and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. An advanced ionogel based on this supramolecular ionic liquid is conveniently constructed by a one-pot method with acrylamide and acrylic acid as monomers. The supramolecular cross-linking network, formed by affluent coordination interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions, provides the ionogel with ideal mechanical strength (tensile strength up to 1.7 MPa), high self-healing efficiency (up to 149%), super adhesion (up to 358 kPa on aluminum), excellent solvent tolerance (less than 10% weight increase, high mechanical and sensing performance retention after being soaked in organic solvents), and low-temperature endurance (breaking elongation can reach 87% at −30 °C). The supramolecular ionogels can function as multi-mode sensors, capable of monitoring strain and different amplitudes of human movements in real-time. Moreover, the sensing performance of ionogels remains unaffected even after being self-healed or exposure to organic solvents. It is expected that this study could offer valuable design ideas to construct advanced gel materials applicable in complicated environment.

Ambient Solvent Evaporation-Triggered Irreversible Covalent Crosslinking for Robust Adhesion in Extreme Conditions

Shanqiu Liu,Zhenxiang Shen,Jingguo Li,Zhiyong Sun,Wei Cui,Yizhen Li,Qiuyue Liu,Enze Yu,Yi Shen,Qing Liu,Taotao Ge,Qiu Meng,Ping Li,Jie Yu,Qiang Lin

Covalently crosslinked polymers, renowned for their stability and superior performance, play a pivotal role in materials science and technology. Yet, conventional crosslinking, reliant on external agents and energy-intensive processes, prompts a growing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient alternatives. Here, it is demonstrated that irreversible covalent crosslinking can be achieved simply through ambient solvent evaporation in a molecularly engineered polydimethylsiloxane system functionalized with dithiolane moieties. This process, validated using reduced density gradient analysis, forms a robust, irreversible covalent polymer network (CTP), fundamentally distinct from conventional dynamic disulfide-based reversible crosslinking systems or physically bonded polymers typically formed via solvent evaporation. The resultant CTP demonstrates strong adhesion to various substrates, as analyzed quantitatively through Density Functional Theory simulations. Furthermore, the CTP displays excellent waterproofing, high optical transparency, and notable resistance to extreme temperatures and highly corrosive solvents. The superior performance of CTP derives from its robust covalent network, enriched with disulfide and peptide bonds and liquid-like PDMS segments. Moreover, the CTP's preparation is straightforward, sustainable, and cost-effective. These advancements position CTP as a promising development in adhesive technology, suitable for a wide range of applications requiring mechanical robustness, chemothermal resilience, and optical clarity, particularly in scenarios sensitive to thermal or radiation exposure.

High-strength, strong-adhesion, and antibacterial polyelectrolyte complex hydrogel films from natural polysaccharides

Xuefeng Li,Lingli Shang,Dapeng Li,Wei Wang,Shunlan Chen,Hanwen Zhong,Yiwan Huang,Shijun Long

Naturally occurring polysaccharide-based polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) physical hydrogels have broad applications in biomedicine. Yet, obtaining high-strength, strong-adhesion, and antibacterial PEC hydrogels via physically crosslinking of natural polysaccharides still remains a challenge. In this work, a chitosan (CS)/sodium alginate (SA) PEC physical hydrogel film was developed by using two oppositely charged natural polysaccharides, CS and SA, of equivalently high molecular weight ( M w , approx. 10 5 Da), the tensile stress of which was achieved as high as 12.3 MPa due to CS-CS intermolecular hydrogen bonding and CS-SA electrostatic interaction. In addition, the hydrogel films, upon protonation at acidic conditions (e.g. pH 2.6), exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and the CS/SA hydrogel films also demonstrated strong adhesion to biological tissue. The high M w -matching, two-component natural polysaccharide approach presented in this work to preparing high-strength, strong-adhesion, and antibacterial PEC hydrogels may shed some lights on converting renewable biomass to value-added biomaterials.

Phase Transition-Induced Nanohydrogel Electrolytes with High Tensile Strength, Robust Adhesion, and Superior Antifreezing

Ruran Yan,Ling Jin,Xiaodong Yang,Yinghong Zhang,Hongsheng Qiao,Chao Zhu,Kui Zhang,Youyi Xia,Peng Lin,Hong Gao

Hydrogel electrolytes hold great potential as flexible all-in-one supercapacitor materials due to their excellent flexibility and safety features. However, the practical application of common hydrogels as electrolytes is severely restricted because of their inferior mechanical performance, insufficient adhesion to electrode materials, and poor antifreezing properties under harsh conditions. In this study, a hydrogel electrolyte is developed via a phase transition method. The presence of in situ-generated nanocrystals within the hydrogel electrolyte has been confirmed by multiple techniques, significantly enhancing their mechanical properties. Specifically, the toughness of the nanohydrogel electrolyte has been improved by 60-fold, while the elongation at break has tripled. Furthermore, the nanohydrogel electrolyte has strong adhesion to electrode materials. Subsequently, a nanohydrogel-based all-in-one supercapacitor is constructed using polyaniline as the electrode through a convenient powder-coating technique. The supercapacitor achieves an impressive specific capacitance of 527 F/g at 30 °C and maintains a capacitance retention of 97% even after 15,000 cycles. Additionally, the freezing point of the nanohydrogel electrolyte is dramatically decreased to approximately −80 °C with the synergistic introduction of glycol, demonstrating its superior antifreezing characteristics. This nanohydrogel electrolyte can be used to construct flexible supercapacitors in frigid environments, and our design strategy can be expanded to other conductive polymers.

Parthenocissus-inspired self-healing and strongly adhesive binder for high-performance Si anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Wenhui Geng,Xinmeng Hu,Yinhang Zhang,Xinze Li,Qinhua Zhou,Kuikui Xiao,Dong Cai,Shuo Yang,Huagui Nie,Haolin Wang,Zhi Yang

Polyacrylic acid (PAA) based-binders equipped with various functions are paramount importance in suppressing the expansion of silicon (Si)-based anodes. However, PAA molecules tend to slip from the surface of active materials during the expansion of Si-based anode due to their 1D linear structure. In this study, inspired by the strong adhesion mechanism of multiple antennae of Parthenocissus, a new polymer binder based on boronic acid (BA) and dopamine-modified PAA with fast self-healing, strong adhesion and stable mechanical performances is synthesized. Due to the abundant dynamic hydrogen bonds , the binder exhibit fast self-healing function at room temperature , thus guaranteeing the superior cycle stability of the electrode. These dynamic hydrogen bond sites not only endow the binder with strong adhesion but also contribute to an average peeling force of 1.50 N for Si@PDB, significantly higher than that of Si@PAA (0.79 N) and Si@PAB (1.29 N). Consequently, the Si anodes utilizing the rationally designed binder demonstrate excellent cycling stabilities (2538 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles) and rate performances (1973 mAh g −1 at 8.0 A g −1 ). These results suggest that the biomimetic binder can serve as a promising and effective candidate for Si-based anodes towards high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Smart Organogels with Antiswelling, Strong Adhesion, and Freeze-Tolerance for Multi-Environmental Wearable Bioelectronic Devices

Zilong Zhu,Dongdong Lu,Mingning Zhu,Peng Zhang,Xiaodong Xiang

Gel-based wearable bioelectronic devices have garnered increasing attention due to their unique properties. However, developing multiple environmentally tolerant (resistant to freezing, drying, and various solvents) conductive gels presents a formidable challenge. Herein, we designed and developed a smart organogel exhibiting high stretchability (up to 550% strain and 19.3 kPa modulus), adhesion (24.8 kPa on pigskin), and resistance to freezing, drying, and various solvents. This achievement is attributed to the synergistic effects arising from the interplay between hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymer segments, the multiple bond interactions within a composite network, and the robust adhesion provided by catechol functional groups in binary solvent dispersion. Furthermore, after introducing hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the network, the organogels demonstrate high conductivity with satisfactory sensitivity (GF = 3.68), wide strain range (0.5–450%), and prominent signal stability. Meanwhile, benefiting from the nonswelling and antifreezing attributes, the obtained conductive organogel proves its versatility as an all-weather sensor. It can achieve accurate and reliable strain sensing in a wide temperature range of −20 to 50 °C and exhibits a high-precision Morse code to transmit information underwater. Moreover, it could also serve as soft bionic electrodes to integrate into a wearable wireless device for detecting human physiological signals underwater. This study provides an effective and versatile design strategy for developing future advanced gel-based sensors and soft bioelectronic devices with robust tolerance to diverse environmental conditions.

A self-healing, robust adhesion, multiple stimuli-response hydrogel for flexible sensors

Yi Zhu,Ling Lin,Yu Chen,Yeping Song,Weipeng Lu,Yanchuan Guo

Ionic hydrogels have great application potential in human index monitoring and wound treatment, such as in wearable sensors, wound dressings, and ionic skin. However, the design of a hydrogel achieving the synergistic characteristics of excellent mechanical properties, robust adhesion, and multiple stimuli-responses remains a critical challenge. Herein, by introducing negatively charged clay nanosheets, we report a smart ionic Gelatin/PAAm/Clay hydrogel (GPNs gel) with a high conductivity of 10.87 mS cm−1. The as-prepared gel exhibits excellent self-healing properties, robust adhesion (interfacial toughness of up to 485 J m−2 with pigskin), and multiple stimuli-responses driven by salt ions, pH, and stress. Based on this hydrogel, a capacitive sensor has also been designed, which provides linear responses over a wide range (applied pressure up to 2 kPa) and sensitively monitors human motion. In addition, the gel also displays good biocompatibility with human lung embryonic (MRC-5) cells. These characteristics demonstrate that the GPNs gel is an ideal candidate for developing flexible sensor devices.

Instant strong adhesion of ultrafast gelling tough nanocomposite hydrogels for antifogging coatings and soft electronics

Nanbin Bao,Kun Wang,Mengxue Duan,Xuhan Gao,Yue Sun,Huan Liu,Zilian Yu,Xinmeng Zhou,Yukai Wu,Huanjun Li

Tough hydrogels capable of achieving instant and strong adhesion to diverse surfaces are highly desirable for various applications such as soft electronics and antifogging coatings. However, existing hydrogel adhesives currently suffer from several limitations including slow adhesion formation, weak bonding, and poor mechanical properties . Herein, we present that strong adhesion of tough nanocomposite hydrogels can be realized instantly by rapid copolymerization of precursor solution within seconds under ambient conditions. Such tough hydrogels possessing ultrashort gelation time were prepared based on self-catalytic Fe 3+ /tannic acid redox pairs, which could activate ammonium persulfate initiator to generate abundant sulfate radicals to trigger ultrafast copolymerization of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of Al(OH) 3 nanoparticles . The resultant hydrogels exhibit excellent mechanical properties including tensile strength of ∼1.0 MPa and compressive strength of ∼15.0 MPa, high adhesion energy of ∼1200 J m − 2 , and good conductivity of 0.72 S/m. Benefiting from these features, the sustainable antifogging hydrogel coatings on diverse transparent substrates can be fabricated easily based on the combined advantages of ultrafast polymerization and instant strong adhesion. Furthermore, the conductive hydrogels can be assembled into flexible strain sensors to monitor various human motions and handwriting recognition. This work provides a promising strategy to design high-performance hydrogels with instant strong adhesion, antifogging properties, and strain sensing.

A damping hydrogel with high water retention and strong adhesion for precise bioelectric signals detection

Chengyi Hou,Hongzhi Wang,Siyu Lu,Qinghong Zhang,Kerui Li,Yaogang Li,Lingli Qu,Jiabei Luo

Bioelectric signals are important for understanding biological patterns and treating diseases. However, the detection of bioelectric signals is often interfered by the artifacts caused by unintentional human movements, therefore, the damping of the interface experiencing vibrations is crucial for obtaining clear bioelectric signals. Herein, we propose a hydrogen bond-engineered dual-network hydrogel damper via photopolymerization strategy, incorporating acetamide (AC) molecules as dynamic bonding regulators. The amphiphilic nature of AC can act as both a hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, contributing to the construction of a high-density interpenetrating hydrogen bond network in chitosan/acrylic matrices. The hydrogel damper exhibits high water retention (8% water loss for 5 days at 25 ℃, 54% RH), strong adhesion (93.42 kPa on skin), and high damping performance (tan δ > 0.3) in the human movement frequency range (1-50 Hz). Due to these properties, the hydrogel is firmly attached to the human skin, reducing the interface impedance between the hydrogel damper and the skin, and can be stored at room temperature for a long time without losing water. In addition, the hydrogel damper has a frequency-dependent dynamic mechanical behaviour that selectively removes motion artifacts to improve the stability and reliability of the bioelectric signal acquisition.
