3D printing of shape memory poly(d,l-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) by direct ink writing for shape-changing structures

Xue Wan,Hongqiu Wei,Fenghua Zhang,Yanju Liu,Jinsong Leng

Four-dimensional (4D) printing of shape memory materials has attracted increasing interests for personalized structures. In this study, a biocompatible poly( d , l -lactide- co -trimethylene carbonate) (PLMC) is utilized to fabricate 4D shape-changing structures with customized geometries through direct ink writing. The printed objects show shape transformations at different dimensions under thermal programming. The influence of the printing parameters on the properties including rheological, solvent evaporation, and static mechanical behavior are systematically investigated. A printing map is further depicted to achieve high-quality printing with high viscous ink flowed from micronozzle to construct various structures. The printed structures in one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional (3D) exhibit shape-changing behavior with fast response around body temperature. The fast responsive time shows potential in the field of surgical suture (4 s), nonwoven fabric (3 s), and self-expandable stent (35 s). The feasibility of 3D printing of PLMC opens the way for applications in shape-changing devices with small diameter. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 48177.

pH-induced synergistic changes in color and shape of soft actuator based on degradable carbon dots/sodium alginate gel

Yingge Shi,Xuyuan Yang,Yongqiang Zhang,Siyu Lu

Soft actuators for intelligent robots require further elaboration to improve their biomedical applicability, which has led to the development of a series of flexible stimulus-responsive materials. However, fabricating degradable soft actuators that exhibit synergistic color and shape changes in response to environmental stimuli remains challenging. Here, we developed a soft actuating gel based on carbon dots (CDs) that are chemically cross-linked with sodium alginate. The soft actuating gel exhibits rapid synergistic changes in color and shape in response to pH owing to CDs protonation and deprotonation. Soft actuators constructed using the gel and poly (lactic acid) tape not only perform actions, such as grasping and lifting, but also camouflage and warn through self-color changes. The combination of pH-responsive CDs and degradable polymers provides a simple strategy for fabricating degradable soft actuators that exhibit synergistic changes in color and shape, and is expected to promote further research into soft actuators.

Electroactive two-way shape memory polymer laminates

Shaojun Chen,Shixin Yang,Ziyu Li,Shiwei Xu,Hongming Yuan,Shiguo Chen,Zhaochuan Ge

Two-way shape changing polymers are attractive in recent years. In this short communication, carbon black (CB)/shape memory polyurethane (SMPU)-elastic polyurethane (EPU) laminated composite is prepared and electro-active two-way shape changing behavior is reported for the first time. First, the CB/SMPU composite demonstrates good electro-active shape recovery due to good electricity conduction. When the CB/SMPU composite film is elongated and form polymer laminates by combining with EPU substrate, the resulted CB/SMPU-EPU polymer laminate shows electro-active two-way shape changing behavior, e.g., bending by applying electric current, and reverse bending upon cooling without electric current. Four-Dimensional Printing of Temperature-Responsive Liquid Crystal Elastomers with Programmable Shape-Changing Behavior

Shuyi Li,Zhengyi Song,Yuyan Fan,Dongsong Wei,Yan Liu

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are polymer networks that exhibit anisotropic liquid crystalline properties while maintaining the properties of elastomers, presenting reversible high-speed and large-scale actuation in response to external stimuli. Herein, we formulated a non-toxic, low-temperature liquid crystal (LC) ink for temperature-controlled direct ink writing 3D printing. The rheological properties of the LC ink were verified under different temperatures given the phase transition temperature of 63 °C measured by the DSC test. Afterwards, the effects of printing speed, printing temperature, and actuation temperature on the actuation strain of printed LCEs structures were investigated within adjustable ranges. In addition, it was demonstrated that the printing direction can modulate the LCEs to exhibit different actuation behaviors. Finally, by sequentially conforming structures and programming the printing parameters, it showed the deformation behavior of a variety of complex structures. By integrating with 4D printing and digital device architectures, this unique reversible deformation property will help LCEs presented here apply to mechanical actuators, smart surfaces, micro-robots, etc. Keywords:liquid crystal elastomers;temperature-responsive;programmable shape-changing;4D printing

Tough Hydrogels with Programmable and Complex Shape Deformations by Ion Dip-Dyeing and Transfer Printing

Xin Peng,Yang Li,Qin Zhang,Cong Shang,Qing-Wen Bai,Huiliang Wang

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels with high mechanical strength, programmable deformation, and simple preparation are essential for their practical applications. Here the preparation of tough hydrogels with programmable and complex shape deformations is reported. Janus hydrogels with different compositions and hydrophilic natures on the two surfaces are first prepared, and they exhibit reversible bending/unbending upon swelling/deswelling processes. More impressively, the deformation rate and extent of the hydrogels can further be easily controlled through an extremely simple and versatile ion dip-dyeing (IDD) and/or ion transfer printing (ITP) method. By selectively printing proper patterns on 1D gel strips, 2D gel sheets and 3D gel structures, the transformations from 1D to 2D, 2D to 3D, and 3D to more complicated 3D shapes can be achieved after swelling the ion-patterned hydrogels in water. The swelling-deformable Janus and ion-patterned hydrogels with high mechanical strengths and programmable deformations can find many practical applications, such as soft machines.

Electrically programmable color and shape morphing in photonic glass elastomers with reduced voltages

Ruiming Jia,Li Yang,Zhe Wang,Hong Chen,Ming Xiao

Electrochromic materials that integrate structural colors and dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) can simultaneously change colors and shapes upon voltages. Typically, operation voltages for these materials are high, reaching several kilovolts. To achieve color changes at lower voltages, we reduce the modulus by lowering silica nanoparticle volume fraction and adding a secondary acrylate monomer, while also ensuring that photonic elastomers maintain recognizable colors. We utilize binary silica nanoparticles to make photonic glass elastomers that show angle-independent structural colors. The photonic glass DEA shows color changes of 85 nm at 800 V with color change sensitivity of 0.11 nm/V, surpassing previous reports. By making a double-layered DEA, we can not only control the shape changes, but also increase the color contrast. This solid-state elastic electrochromic material, offering programmable color change and shape morphing, holds broad applications in wearable devices, camouflage, and flexible displays.

Environment-Interactive Programmable Deformation of Electronically Innervated Synergistic Fluorescence-Color/Shape Changeable Hydrogel Actuators

Junni Xie,Shuxin Wei,Wei Lu,Shuangshuang Wu,Yi Zhang,Ruijia Wang,Ning Zhu,Tao Chen

Utilization of life-like hydrogels to replicate synergistic shape/color changeable behaviors of living organisms has been long envisaged to produce robust functional integrated soft actuators/robots. However, it remains challenging to construct such hydrogel systems with integrated functionality of remote, localized and environment-interactive control over synergistic discoloration/actuation. Herein, inspired by the evolution-optimized bioelectricity stimulus and multilayer structure of natural reptile skins, electronically innervated fluorescence-color switchable hydrogel actuating systems with bio-inspired multilayer structure comprising of responsive fluorescent hydrogel sheet and conductive Graphene/PDMS film with electrothermal effect is presented. Such rational structure enables remote control over synergistic fluorescence-color and shape changes of the systems via the cascading “electrical trigger-Joule heat generation-hydrogel shrinkage” mechanism. Consequently, local/sequential control of discoloration/actuation are achieved due to the highly controllable electrical stimulus in terms of amplitude and circuit design. Furthermore, by joint use with acoustic sensors, soft chameleon robots with unprecedented environment-interactive adaptation are demonstrated, which can intelligently sense environment signals to adjust their color/shape-changeable behaviors. This work opens previously unidentified avenues for functional integrated soft actuators/robots and will inspire life-like intelligent systems for versatile uses.

Switchable photothermal conversion efficiency for reprogrammable actuation

He Yongcheng,Liu Haojun,Luo Jiajia,Li Nuo,Li Lihua,Xiong Puxian,Gan Jiulin,Yang Zhongmin

Reprogrammable soft matter brings flexibility to soft robots so that they can display various motions, which is flourishing in soft robotics. However, the reprogramming of photoresponsive materials used in soft robots is time-consuming using existing methods. In this study, we promote a strategy for rapid reprogramming via switchable photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE). The liquid crystalline elastomers doped with semiconductor bismuth compounds (Bi-LCE) used in this work exhibited large photothermal actuation with over 35% shrinkage in 5 s at high PCE state, which demonstrated little deformation at low PCE state. Furthermore, the material was capable of being reprogrammed up to 10 times, with only 20 min required for one PCE reversible switch. Based on this switchable PCE effect, the same Bi-LCE film displayed various shape changes through different programmable pattern. Additionally, a reprogrammable hollow tube made of PCE reprogrammable materials could tune the diameter, cross-section configuration, and surface morphology, which was crucial for microfluidics field. Reprogrammable materials provide endless possibilities for reusability and sustainability in robotics.

A Cellulose-Based Dual-Crosslinked Framework with Sensitive Shape and Color Changes in Acid/Alkaline Vapors

Yuxin Sun,Xinye Qian,Yan Gou,Chunling Zheng,Fang Zhang

Cellulose detectors, as green sensors, are some of the defensive mechanisms of plants which combat environmental stresses. However, extracted cellulose struggles to fulfil these functionalities due to its rigid physical/chemical properties. In this study, a novel cellulose dual-crosslinked framework (CDCF) is proposed. This comprises a denser temporary physical crosslinking bond (hydrogen bonding) and a looser covalent crosslinking bond (N,N-methylenebisacrylamide), which create deformable spaces between the two crosslinking sites. Abundant pH-sensitive carboxyl groups and ultralight, highly porous structures make CDCF response very sensitive in acid/alkaline vapor environments. Hence, a significant shrinkage of CDCF was observed following exposure to vapors. Moreover, a curcumin-incorporated CDCF exhibited dual shape and color changes when exposed to acid/alkaline vapors, demonstrating great potential for the multi-detection of acid/alkaline vapors.

Nature-Inspired pH-Responsive Hydrogels with Rapid and High Contrast Changes in Color, Fluorescence, and Shape Simultaneously

Xiao Le-Ping,Qiu Lv-Ming,Wu Zhen,Wang Guo-Jie

To realize single-stimulus-induced simultaneous multi-behaviors in hydrogels is still quite challenging nowadays. Herein, an intelligent pH-responsive hydrogel (BP4VA/PAS) with rapid and high contrast changes in color, fluorescence, and shape simultaneously is reported. The BP4VA/PAS hydrogel is fabricated by incorporating styryl anthracene derivative (BP4VA) into copolymer networks (PAS) of acrylamide and sodium 4-styrene sulfonate. Under acid conditions, the protonation of BP4VA generates a rapid change with high color contrast from yellow to red and a fluorescence switch between bright green and weak red emission. At the same time, the electrostatic interactions between 2H-BP4VA 2+ and sulfonate anions suspended on PAS trigger BP4VA/PAS hydrogels to shrink. Upon alkaline treatment, the 2H-BP4VA 2+ /PAS hydrogel deprotonates and recovers to its original color, fluorescence, and shape. Furthermore, utilizing rapid and remarkable pH-responsive properties of BP4VA/PAS hydrogels, we successfully demonstrated its applications in biomimicry, camouflage, and multistage information encryption. Collectively, this work provided an elegant strategy to develop intelligent hydrogels in applications of biomimetic smart materials and information encryption.

A monolithic hydro/organo macro copolymer actuator synthesized via interfacial copolymerization

Zhang Feilong,Fan Junbing,Zhang Pengchao,Liu Mingjie,Meng Jingxin,Jiang Lei,Wang Shutao

Synthetic polymer actuators have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics and sensors. The majority of previous efforts have focused on smart hydrogels with bilayer structures that can change their shape in response to environmental stimuli, such as temperature, light and certain chemicals. However, the practical application of hydrogels is limited because of their low modulus and weak mechanical strength. Here we synthesized a robust monolithic actuator of a macro-scale hydro/organo binary cooperative Janus copolymer film. The process involves direct, one-step interfacial polymerization of immiscible hydrophilic and hydrophobic vinyl monomer solutions, and the resultant product exhibited binary cooperative shape transformation to multiple external stimuli. The Janus copolymer film can work in both aqueous solutions and organic solvents, with bidirectional and site-specific bending arising from cooperative asymmetric swelling/shrinking of the hydrogel and organogel networks. In addition, the as-prepared Janus copolymer film can act as a sensor element for solvent leakage detection. This binary cooperative strategy is applicable to most immiscible monomer systems and provides a general approach to developing novel functional copolymer materials.

Photothermal-Responsive Shape-Memory Magnetic Helical Microrobots with Programmable Addressable Shape Changes

Fu Zhao,Weibin Rong,Lefeng Wang,Lining Sun

Faced with complex and diverse tasks, researchers seek to introduce stimuli-responsive materials into the field of microrobots. Magnetic helical microrobots based on shape-memory polymers demonstrate excellent locomotion capability and programmable shape transformations. However, the stimulation method of shape changes is still dependent on the rising of ambient temperature and lacks the ability to address individuals among multiple microrobots. In this paper, magnetic helical microrobots were prepared based on polylactic acid and Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which demonstrated controlled locomotion under rotating magnetic fields and programmable shape changes in their length, diameter, and chirality. The transition temperature of shape recoveries was adjusted to a range above 37 °C. At 46 °C, helical microrobots had a fast shape change with a recovery ratio of 72% in a minute. The photothermal effect of Fe3O4 nanoparticles under near-infrared laser can actuate the shape recovery rapidly, with a recovery ratio of 77% in 15 s and 90% in a minute. The stimulation strategy also allows addressing among multiple microrobots, or even within a single microrobot, selectively stimulating one or a part to change its shape. Combined with the magnetic field, laser-addressed shape changes were used for precise deployment and individual control of microrobots. Multiple microrobots can be enriched at the targeted point, heating the ambient temperature over 46 °C. The shape changes of internal parts of microrobots help them to grasp and assemble objects. Such microrobots have great potential in biomedicine and micromanipulation.
