Flavor profiling and optimization of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) in recirculating aquaculture systems: Effects of exercise intensity assessed by advanced analytical techniques

Songpeng Jia,Xing Wang,Mengqi Lu,Tianyi Lan,Zhenyu Gao,Jie Ding,Ran Meng,Xuelei Wang,Xiongfei Wu,Lin Huang,Xujie Li,Zhongming Zheng,Weiliang Shen

Exercise training is important for improving muscle flavor in RAS-farmed fish, but its effects on the muscle flavor of Larimichthys crocea remain unclear. This study investigated how different swimming intensities (0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 BL/s) modulate muscle flavor using electronic sensory and chromatographic analyses. The moderate-intensity group (0.8 BL/s) showed significantly higher umami and flavor richness than the low and high-intensity groups ( P  < 0.05). HS-SPME-GC–MS identified 110 differential volatile compounds, with aldehydes as the dominant contributors. Eight key compounds with OAVs ≥1 were detected, including dimethyl trisulfide (highest OAV) and four major aldehydes accounting for 50 % of these compounds. HS-GC-IMS detected 47 volatiles, with 2,3-butanedione as a primary flavor compound. The moderate group showed a more balanced volatile profile, with significantly elevated favorable aldehydes and reduced undesirable compounds ( P  < 0.05). Overall, moderate swimming intensity improves flavor quality in L. crocea , offering a practical strategy for sustainable aquaculture.

Multifunctional gum arabic and carboxymethyl cellulose modified silicon dots as corrosion and scale inhibitor in industrial circulating water systems

Hanlin Shao,Duanzhi Li,Zhihao Chen,Xiaoshuang Yin,Hui Xu,Ying Liu,Wenzhong Yang

Traditional research on corrosion inhibitors has primarily focused on evaluating the inhibition performance, overlooking their additional potential functions. Gum arabic (GA), a natural polysaccharide derived from Acacia species, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a water-soluble anionic polymer, were employed as green stabilizing agents due to their abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups, which facilitate surface functionalization and enhance dispersibility. Herein, multifunctional hydroxylated and carboxylated silicon dots (HCSiDs) were prepared via employing GA and CMC as green stabilizing agents for enhanced corrosion and scale inhibition properties. Optical studies confirmed their fluorescence property, which enables real-time concentration monitoring via a linear calibration curve ( R 2  = 0.9987) in the 0–100 mg/L range. Corrosion studies demonstrated 93.3 % corrosion inhibition efficiency for Q235 steel in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 100 mg/L dosage. Scale inhibition studies demonstrated a 100 % rate of inhibition at 6.0 mg/L for CaSO 4 . The developed nanomaterial showcases promising applications for integrated monitoring and protection in industrial water circulation systems, bridging functional gaps in conventional corrosion inhibitor technologies.

In-situ formed interface with Fe0 and Gaδ+-Ov in garnets boosting H2 production in chemical looping H2O splitting

Teng Zong,Ming Tian,Chaojie Wang,Nanxin Wang,Jiachen Yang,Lin Li,Yujia Han,Xiaodong Wang

It is of great significance but challenge to achieve superior H 2 O splitting performance by tailoring active sites in novel Fe-based mixed oxides in order to boost H 2 O activation to achieve the oxidation of metallic Fe to Fe 3+ back into parent substrate rather than thermodynamically more favourable Fe 2+ (Fe-O v ) usually exhibiting low H 2 O activation in chemical looping water splitting (CLWS). Herein, we for the first time reported the performance of Ga-doped garnets (Y 3 Fe 2 Ga x Al 3-x O 12 abbreviated as YF 2 G x Al 3-x , x = 1 and 2) for CLWS which surpassed most of the state-of-the-art Fe-based oxides by virtue of marvelous peak H 2 production rate of 195.3 mL min −1 g −1 , H 2 productivity of 60.7 mL g −1 , 100 % H 2 purity and outstanding redox stability for YF 2 G 2 A 1 . It was clarified that Ga doping led to the formation of an interface with Fe 0 and Ga δ+ -O v in garnets, which synergistically improved H 2 O dissociation, leading to the direct oxidation of Fe 0 to Fe 3+ back into garnets and thus accounting for its prominent performance.

Low concentration peroxymonosulfate and UVA-LED combination for E. coli inactivation and wastewater disinfection from recirculating aquaculture systems

Wanhe Qi,Songming Zhu,Abubakar Shitu,Zhangying Ye,Dezhao Liu

Under Minamata Convention restrictions, mercury-free UV source was in need for ultraviolet disinfection in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Ultraviolet emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) seemed a potential mercury-free UV source and had gained increasing attention in water disinfection. In this study, a mercury-free UVA-LED and low concentration peroxymonosulfate (PMS) combination was proposed for E. coli (CGMCC 1.3373) inactivation and real RAS wastewater disinfection. Results showed that UVA-LED and low concentration PMS combination enhanced E. coli inactivation over UVA-LED alone. A synergistic effect on E. coli inactivation with synergy factor of 58.7 % was found when combining UVA-LED irradiation with 1 mg/L PMS. Kinetic rate constant increased by up to 139 % by UVA-LED and 1 mg/L PMS combination, which implied the required UV fluence to 2-log E. coli inactivation was saved up to 42 %. Also, UVA-LED and 1 mg/L PMS combination showed disinfection potential for real RAS wastewater treatment. Mechanism study revealed that the Cl − , · OH and SO 4 ·- played important roles and · OH was dominant radical in saline solution by UVA-LED/PMS process compared to that in phosphate buffered solution(PBS). The E. coli inactivation was caused by UVA-LED irradiation and reactive species generated in UVA-LED/PMS system. Our study provided a potential strategy to introduce the mercury-free UV-LED into RAS and a better understanding of UVA-LED/PMS disinfection process.
