Robust and strong adhesion is highly required for reversible adhesions. Inspired by gecko setae and octopus sucker, micropillar array with frustum of conical micropits (FCM) was fabricated by direct laser writing lithography. With an optimized micropit in FCM, the adhesion strength of 1.2 MPa is achieved under a loading force of 5 mN, which is 3.7 and 2.1 times the micropillars with flat punch top and circular conical micropit, respectively. Under a loading force larger than 3 mN, compliant contacts are formed between FCM micropillars and the counterpart surface, which results in a uniformly distributed stress at the separating interface, an instantaneous detachment of multiple FCM micropillars, and therefore a strong adhesion. Moreover, the adhesion of FCM is quite robust that 1000 cycles of attaching and detaching have no influence on the adhesion performance. The work here not only provides a bioinspired structure for strong and robust adhesion but also consolidates the concept of combining features from different biological systems to create new functional materials.

Pool boiling offers exceptional heat transfer performance, making it crucial for advanced thermal management. However, simultaneously optimizing both critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is challenging due to the inherent trade-off between promoting bubble nucleation and mitigating detrimental bubble coalescence. This study presents a micro/nano-hierarchical surface architecture designed to overcome this limitation. Fabricated via laser machining and chemical vapor deposition, the architecture comprises an array of micro pits (MPs) decorated with Co-catalyzed carbon nanotubes (CoCNTs). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations demonstrate that the MP array enhances HTC by increasing the density of nucleation sites and reducing the bubble departure diameter. Simultaneously, the CoCNTs within the MPs enhance interfacial heat transfer and promote capillary-driven liquid replenishment to the heating surface, effectively mitigating dry-out and significantly improving CHF. The synergistic effects of these micro/nanofeatures yield remarkable performance enhancements on Cu substrates, with the HTC and CHF increasing by 211.5% and 125.2%, respectively, compared to a bare Cu surface. This hierarchical surface design offers a promising strategy for developing high-performance boiling heat transfer surfaces for next-generation thermal management applications.

In this study, CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass was utilized to join SiC after surface polishing and etching, without the application of pressure. To join polished SiC at 1250 °C using CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass proved unsuccessful. However, when polished SiC was joined at 1350 °C, the joint shear strength was 108.0 ± 15.5 MPa. Etching polished SiC with a NaOH–K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] solution effectively removed surface carbon, resulting in numerous micro-pits, that increased the joining area and improved the wettability of CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass. The joint strengths of etched SiC joined at 1250 °C and 1350 °C were 29.0 ± 11.6 MPa and 125.1 ± 19.6 MPa, respectively. After ablation at 1200 °C for 10 min, the retained strength of the etched joints (joined at 1350 °C) was 61.9 ± 4.0 MPa, whereas the strength of the polished joints decreased to only 36.6 ± 10.7 MPa. Surface etching demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance the strength and high-temperature resistance of SiC joints.

The delayed transition of macrophages (MΦs) from pro-inflammatory M1 to the pro-healing M2 state on implant surfaces is one of the most important reasons for poor osseointegration. This work reports the construction of closely packed nanopores with a small diameter on the micropitted titanium (Ti) surface by two-step acid etching to promote the M1-to-M2 transition of MΦs and pays special attention to the potential mechanisms by which the nanopores decorating the micropits exert immunomodulatory effects. The results show that the structure composed of hybrid nanopores (10–25 nm) and micropits (5–15 μm) can be produced on the Ti surface by a two-step acid etching process. Compared with the unitary micropits, the micropit/nanopore surface could facilitate the switch of MΦs from the pro-inflammatory M1 to the pro-healing M2 phenotype. RNA sequencing reveals that the MAPK, PI3K-AKT and C-type lectin signaling pathways play key roles in the micro/nano-structure-mediated transition. In addition, the micro/nano-structured surface down-regulated CYP1A2 expression, reducing the generation of mitochondrial ROS, in turn restraining the oxidative stress and further attenuating inflammation. This work provides novel insights into the underlying mechanisms of immunomodulation by the nano-structure-decorated micro-structures on the Ti surface, which is significant for designing the surface of orthopedic implants from the perspective of immunomodulation.
