Porous sustainable cellulose/gelatin/sepiolite gel beads were fabricated via an efficient ‘hydrophilic assembly–floating droplet’ two-step method to remove Congo red (CR) from wastewater. The beads comprised microcrystalline cellulose and gelatin, forming a dual network framework, and sepiolite, which acted as a functional component to reinforce the network. The as-prepared gel beads were characterized using FTIR, SEM, XRD, and TGA, with the results indicating a highly porous structure that was also thermally stable. A batch adsorption experiment for CR was performed and evaluated as a function of pH, sepiolite addition, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration. The kinetics and isotherm data obtained were in agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, with a maximum monolayer capacity of 279.3 mg·g−1for CR at 303 K. Moreover, thermodynamic analysis demonstrated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the dye uptake. Importantly, even when subjected to five regeneration cycles, the gel beads retained 87% of their original adsorption value, suggesting their suitability as an efficient and reusable material for dye wastewater treatments. Keywords:microcrystalline cellulose;gelatin;sepiolite;beads;dye;adsorption

In order to increase the stability of the food foam system, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and chitosan (CHN) were used as stabilizer based on Pickering effect. The MCC/CHN colloidal particles had the initial morphology of MCC, the addition of CHN had an obvious influence on the surface zeta potential of the MCC, and it indicated that there was a strong interaction between MCC and CHN, which had been proved by using FTIR results. The MCC/CHN colloidal particles had typical shear thinning and elastic gel-like behaviors, and the Pickering emulsions stabilized by using the MCC/CHN colloidal particles also had the similar rheology properties. The pH had an obvious effect on the stability and emulsifying ability of the Pickering emulsions, and when the pH was near to 7.0, the emulsions had gelation behavior and there were inter-droplet interactions in the emulsion systems. For practical application, the solid foams were prepared from the Pickering emulsions at pH 7.0. The obtained foams had porous structure, and the molecular weight of the CHN had an influence on the strength of the foams, the energy absorption of the foams was increased from 17.66 kJ/m 3 to 32.86 KJ/m 3 with the increase of the molecular weight of the chitosan from 200 mPa s to 400 mPa s. The results indicated that MCC/CHN colloidal particles could be used to prepare food-grade solid foams through Pickering emulsions, which had great potential to produce safe, clean, and green products.

This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties of hot-waxed wood by incorporating microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), thereby addressing the issue of inadequate surface durability. We investigated the effects of varying mass fractions (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%) of MCC on multiple surface properties of hot-waxed wood modified with natural wax and maleic anhydride-ethyl acetate copolymer-grafted Fischer-Tropsch wax. These properties encompass adhesion, hardness, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, surface roughness, gloss, and hydrophobicity. To gain deeper insights into the reinforcing role of MCC, analytical techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to comprehensively characterize the chemical structure, crystalline structure, and surface morphology of the samples. The results reveal that, upon the addition of 5% MCC, the hot-waxed wood treated with modified Fischer-Tropsch wax demonstrates a 41% increase in surface adhesive strength, an improvement in hardness from 2H to 3H, a reduction in surface impact resistance from grade 5 to grade 2, and a 72% decrease in wear mass. Additionally, it exhibits enhanced surface hydrophobicity and thermal stability, while preserving its decorative appearance. These findings endorse the use of MCC in hot-waxed wood, offering significant potential in fields like wooden architecture, indoor wooden decorative panels, and furniture.

A new biosorbent (PEI/SA-MCCMV) with abundant amino and carboxyl groups was prepared by grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) onto carboxylated microcrystalline cellulose (SA-MCCMV), which was obtained through grafting succinic anhydride (SA) on pretreated microcrystalline cellulose (MCCMV) with microwave-H2O2. It was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric (TG) that the amino and carboxyl groups were introduced onto the microcrystalline cellulose, and the amino and carboxyl groups content were 2.61 mmol g−1 and 4.64 mmol g−1, respectively. The effects of the contact time and pH on heavy metal ion uptake were investigated. The adsorption kinetic data was described well with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.99) and the adsorption isotherms were well fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model, demonstrating that chemisorption was the rate-controlling factor for heavy metal ion adsorption on the PEI/SA-MCCMV biosorbent. Furthermore, the remarkable adsorption capacity (217.3 and 357.1 mg g−1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively) obtained from the Langmuir isotherm indicated that this biomass adsorbent has a promising application in water treatment.

The preparation and performance control of the cellulose membrane are one of the hot topics in the environmentally friendly separation membrane field. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was prepared by microwave-assisted acidic hydrolysis of cellulose obtained from jute, followed by the use of a mixture ofN-methylmorpholine-N-oxide and water as a solvent to obtain the homogeneous casting liquid, which was scraped and subsequently immersed in the coagulation bath to form a smooth and dense cellulose membrane. During membrane formation, the crystal structure of MCC changed from type I to type II, but the chemical structure remained unchanged. The mechanical strength and separation performance of the membrane were related to the content of MCC in the casting liquid. When the content of MCC was about 7%, the tensile strength of the membrane reached a maximum value of 13.49 MPa, and the corresponding elongation at break was 68.12%. The water flux (J) and rejection rate (R) for the bovine serum albumin were 19.51 L/(m2·h) and 95.37%, respectively, under an optimized pressure of 0.2 MPa. In addition, the coagulation bath had a significant effect on the membrane separation performance, and J and R were positively and negatively correlated with the polarity of the coagulation bath. Among them, it was note-worthy that J and R of membrane formed in ethanol were 33.95 L/(m2·h) and 91.43%, separately. Compared with water as a coagulation bath, J was increased by 74% at the situation and R was roughly equivalent, showing better separation performance. More importantly, the relationship between the structure and separation performances has also been studied preliminarily. This work provides certain guidance for the preparation of high-performance MCC membranes. Keywords:jute;microcrystalline cellulose;cellulose membrane;microwave-assisted hydrolysis;separation

Pressure moulding offers an efficient route to process the infusible cellulose into bulk materials. However, generally, it needs the assistance of heat, which leads to local decomposition of the cellulose molecules and heterogeneity of the as-prepared bulk materials. Considering the multi-scaled relaxation behavior in the structure, interaction and movement of cellulosic molecules, herein, we propose a scheme of pressure-mediated moulding for preparing cellulosic bulk materials under ambient temperature. In brief, microcrystalline cellulose is moulded under a specific pressure in the range of 100–900 MPa, and undergoes a period of pressure retention and pressure relief. Experimental optimizations and characterizations demonstrate that an elevated pressure, reasonable pressure retention and slow pressure relief processes contribute to a densified bulk material with high crystallinity index. The densified and highly ordered structure exhibits a compressive strength up to 575.3 MPa, which is higher than that of almost all commercial plastics. Further investigations reveal the mechanism for illustrating the formation and mechanical improvement of the moulded material, which is expressed as pressure-mediated reconstruction of hydrogen bonding networks in cellulosic bulks. Specifically, the hydrogen-bonding networks break under applied high pressure in the pressurization and pressure retention phases, which ensures the motions of cellulosic molecules; and the slow pressure relief allows the subsequent reconstruction of hydrogen bonding networks, leading to an increasing density from 0.96 g/cm 3 to 1.55 g/cm 3 and an improving crystallinity index from 85.07% to 93.37%. We highlight this finding as a feasible academic and technical route for preparing high-performance cellulosic bulk materials.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is biodegradable and biocompatible, but some of its functional properties limit its commercial application. To improve the properties of PLA without destroying other useful characteristics, a composite film consisting of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and PLA was prepared. In this research, MCC was obtained from bagasse bleached pulp by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. After being modified by a silane coupling agent (KH550), the MCC was used as reinforcement in the PLA matrix. The degradation performance of the composite film was explored using degradation experiments in which the film was buried in soil. According to the single-factor experiments, the best composite formulation was 3% KH550, 20% KH550-MCC and 15% acetyl tributyl citrate. The results showed that the interfacial compatibility of the MCC/PLA composite films was improved after MCC was modified with KH550. This research showed that the addition of MCC can enhance the degradation rate of MCC/PLA composite films.

The development of packaging materials from renewable resources presents a viable solution for tackling the environmental issues stemming from the extensive production of non-biodegradable plastic packaging films derived from petroleum. Herein, a series of fully forestry sourced rosin modified microcrystalline cellulose (MCC-HDA) films, in which the rigid rosin moieties and cellulose chains were chemically linked by the flexible hexanediol, were successfully prepared via green, facile and efficient hydroxyl-yne click chemistry method. With the increase of rosin content, the modified films exhibited improved UV shielding with high transparency and improved hydrophobic properties. The introduction of the designed flexible hexanediol and rigid rosin segment lead to a denser microstructure of MCC-HDA films. Therefore, both the strength and toughness of the MCC-HDA film were effectively improved: the tensile strength, Young's modulus and toughness have been observed to reach up to 80±2.4 MPa, 5.5±0.3 GPa and 5.8±0.65 MJ/m 3 , respectively, which are 1.6, 2.6 and 1.4 times higher than those of pure MCC films. In addition, the denser structure also leads to a significant decrease in the oxygen and water vapor barrier layers of the MCC-HDA film, achieving the lowest transmission rates of 295 cm 2 /m 2 /24 h for oxygen and 793 g/m 2 /day for water vapor. Compared to commercial Polyethylene (PE) film, these films demonstrated not only high biodegradability (fully degrading in approximately 50 days), but also showed better fruit preservation performance (greatly reduced the oxidation of fruits). Given these significant characteristics, rosin-grafted cellulose films are anticipated to displace conventional non-biodegradable polymers and have prospective uses in the food packaging industry.

In this study, polylactic acid (PLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) composites and PLA/PCL/MCC composite compatibilized by the maleic anhydride (MA) copolymer were prepared via two-screw extrusion technology. The mechanical results showed that the strength and break elongation of the ternary composites are decreased with the increase in the MCC contents. After the grafting copolymer was added, due to the better compatibility between the components of the composite, the strength and break elongation of the composite are significantly improved compared with that of ungrafted composite. According to the conducted differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, the crystallinity of the PLA/PCL/MCC composites is increased with the increase in the MCC content, and the crystallinity of the grafted composites is higher. In addition, the 3D printed PLA/PLAma/PCL/5MCC composite exhibits good biocompatibility and adhesion with MCF-7 cells, thus indicating its bright application prospects as a biomaterial scaffold material in tissue engineering.

In this work, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) particles and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were simultaneously incorporated into the microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) foam to fabricate the MCC/Cu 2 O/GO composite foam toward methylene blue (MB) photocatalytic degradation. The interaction between Cu 2 O and GO and the morphologies of the composite foams were investigated. The results showed that there was a hydrogen bonding interaction between Cu 2 O and GO, which promoted the exfoliation of GO nanosheets and the dispersion of Cu 2 O in the composite foam. The MCC/Cu 2 O/GO composite foams not only exhibited high photocatalytic degradation ratio toward MB compared with the pure Cu 2 O particles and the common MCC/Cu 2 O composite foams, but also exhibited much higher derogation rate compared with the Cu 2 O-based photocatalytic degradation materials as reported in literature. A concept of ‘micro-reactor’ was proposed to explain the mechanisms for the largely enhanced degradation rate. Furthermore, the cycling measurements for the photocatalytic degradation of MB was also evaluated.

The catalytic conversion of microcrystalline cellulose is examined over a niobic acid catalyst (NBO) prepared by an alkali fusion method. The catalytic activity of NBO is significantly affected by the reaction conditions and further acid treatment. The highest 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) yield of 7.0 mol % and a glucose yield of 17.7 mol % at a cellulose conversion of 54.2% are achieved at 230 °C for 2 h. The H2SO4-treated (NBS) and H3PO4-treated (NBP) samples both show greatly improved performance over NBO due to the introduction of strong acid sites and the increase in specific surface area. NBS gives a glucose yield of 26.0 mol % and an HMF yield of 14.1 mol %, while NBP exhibits a glucose yield of 21.4 mol % and an HMF yield of 15.5 mol %. NBO shows excellent recyclability for the catalytic hydrolysis of cellulose. The recovered NBS and NBP samples can be regenerated by calcination and subsequent acid treatment.

Hygroscopic thermal fibers are a kind of functional material that makes use of moisture to generate heat for fabrics. In this work, composite fibers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with various compositions were prepared using a solution spinning method. Besides the promotion of mechanical properties of PAN by addition of cellulose reported in previous research, this study focused on the hygroscopic thermal property of blends and spun fibers of PAN and cellulose. The content of MCC in the composite fibers has a significant effect on the hygroscopic thermal property. At a temperature of 17 °C and humidity of 90%, the maximum temperature increase of composite fibers could reach 4.9 °C. The composite fibers exhibited an obvious temperature response of on–off humidity circulation during testing. The breaking strength of the composite fibers was higher than 100 MPa. The influence of addition of cellulose on morphology, especially on the crystallinity and lateral size of PAN microfibrils, and the relationship between the morphology and hygroscopic thermal property were investigated by means of wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering in terms of experiment and theory. A smaller lateral size of microfibril led to a better hydroscopic thermal property. The composite fibers were expected to be used in temperature regulation clothing. © 2022 Society of Industrial Chemistry.
