Despite the extensive researches on CL-20 crystals, the mechanical safety issues and process problems of CL-20 applications have not been studied in-depth. Herein, the cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) was doped in microcrystalline wax (MW), oxidized microcrystalline wax (OMW) and hydrogel (PPC) to design and fabricate the cross-linked CL-20 composites by simple water-suspension melting and freeze-drying methods. The composites were characterized by SEM, XPS, TG-DSC, XRD, mechanical sensitivity device and inclined chute tester. It is found that the CNC@OMW composite film exhibits excellent coating effect (99.96%) on CL-20 due to the cross-linking results. The E a of CL-20 is increased from 190.92 to 388.71 kJ/mol under the synergistic effect of the excellent compatibility between components and the compact coating structure of CNC@OMW. Additionally, the film enhances the T p0 of CL-20 from 218.15 to 222.66 ℃ and T b from 220.27 to 223.73 ℃, respectively. While, the PPC@CNC only promoted E a , T p0 and T b of CL-20–292.89.71 kJ/mol, 224.22 ℃ and 225.66 ℃, respectively. Besides, the XRD results confirms that three composite films dose not cause a transformation of the ε- CL-20 crystal phase. Most importantly, the cross-linked film brings mechanical sensitivity of CL-20 from 60 N and 3.5 J to a level of over 360 N and 10.4 J, comparable to WO 3 /Al nanothermite with 5 wt% polyaniline (360 N) and composite with 95 wt% LLM-105 and 5 wt% ternary (11–12 J). This improvement enables the composite explosives to be handled using standard procedures. Furthermore, the ability of the particles to accumulate electrostatic charge after cross-linking coating is significantly reduced, and PVC is more suitable as the contact material of CL-20 and composite particles than copper for use in the transportation and packaging. These findings can serve as a reference for wide application of CL-20.

Studies have shown that fluorinated oil repellents are potentially harmful to humans and the environment, and therefore, the development of non-toxic, green, and environmentally friendly oil repellents has become inevitable. Microcrystalline wax is a branched saturated alkane with a molecular weight of 580–700 Da, which has a lower surface tension than edible oil. Herein, microcrystalline wax emulsion (fluorine-free oil repellent) was prepared by mechanical stirring–homogenization, the effects of emulsifier ratio and dosage on the emulsion performance were systematically investigated, and the resultant stable microcrystalline wax emulsions were applied to the paper surface to explore the oil and water resistance and water vapor barrier performance. The results showed that stabilized microcrystalline wax emulsion was obtained at the emulsifier Span-80/Tween-80 ratio of 5:5, and the emulsifier dosage was 20% (relative to the microcrystalline wax). When 6 g/m2of microcrystalline wax was applied to the surface of starch pretreated paper, the kit rating value of the paper was high, at up to 10/12, the Cobb60value decreased to 12.5 g/m2, the overall migration of paper was less than 10 mg/dm2, and the water vapor permeability was reduced by 81.9%, which met the requirements of oil and water resistance performance of food packaging paper. Keywords:microcrystalline wax emulsion;oil and water resistance;fluorine-free oil repellent

The controlled release formulations (CRFs) are considered an effective way to solve damage to the environment caused by traditional pesticide formulations. To change the defects of traditional neonicotinoid formulations that dissolve quickly in soil, three types of thiamethoxam (TM) CRFs microspheres with content of 20% TM were prepared using microcrystalline wax (MK) as the matrix, laurate acid tapioca starch ester (MSK) and stearyl dehydroabietic acid ester (MDK) as the regulators of ingredient release. The release behavior of CRFs microspheres in water and soil showed that the microspheres had superior stability and different TM sustained-release periods, and TM release of the microspheres in soil was faster than that in water. The release rate is TM/MDK > TM/MSK > TM/MK. In water, the release of thiamethoxam technical was finished after 38 hours. However, for TM/MK, the release rate was 94% after 240 hours, and the release time was extended by 6 times. Meanwhile, TM/MDK has a particular pH-responsive release. Research shows that using microcrystalline wax as the matrix, by adding MSK or MDK to adjust the release of ingredients, pesticide CRFs microspheres with different release periods can be prepared to achieve the purpose of controlling the release of pesticides.

Although protein-polysaccharide complexes have been widely explored as Pickering emulsifiers, their cooperative stabilization with oleogels in composite emulsion systems has been rarely investigated. This study constructed whey protein isolate fibril-chitosan (WPIF-CS) nanoparticles via acid-thermal treatment and electrostatic self-assembly technology, and systematically investigated the dual stabilization mechanisms mediated by composite nanoparticles and beeswax-based oleogel matrices in Pickering emulsions. Optimized nanoparticles (3:1 WPIF/CS ratio, pH 5.6) achieved a 62.79 ± 2.40° contact angle with enhanced three-phase equilibrium. Emulsions containing 26 mg/mL beeswax-oleogel and 40 mg/mL nanoparticles showed strong viscoelasticity (G' = 454.71 Pa > G" = 124.63 Pa). The emulsion stability originated from dual structural synergy: the three-dimensional cross-linked network of oleogels provided skeletal support, meanwhile nanoparticle interfacial adsorption formed dense monolayers, with their combined effect achieving multi-level stabilization. The system retained integrity through 14-day storage and three freeze-thaw cycles. This work provides novel strategies for food-grade emulsifiers and deciphers multi-scale oleogel-nanoparticle synergy mechanisms.

The development of shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs) for solar-thermal energy storage faces a trade-off: while conventional petroleum or mineral-derived systems achieve high energy density, they raise concerns about resource depletion and environmental impact. Here, we address this challenge by applying a circular economy approach, transforming waste coffee grounds and beeswax (BW) into a fully bio-based composite PCM that combines sustainable attributes with performance characteristics relevant for practical applications. A hierarchically porous carbon aerogel, prepared by carbonization of coffee waste, serves as a structural support for vacuum-impregnated BW and demonstrates a PCM loading capacity of 78.8 %. The composite exhibits a phase change enthalpy of 135.3 J/g at 48.7°C and maintains 98.2 % of its capacity after 500 thermal cycles. Under thermal stress conditions (70°C, 4 h), the material shows no detectable leakage. Additionally, the biochar framework enables dual functionality: efficient solar absorption and heat storage, yielding an 89.0 % solar-thermal conversion efficiency under a light intensity of 100 mW/cm 2 . The real-time temperature profile shows that phase transition aligns with variations in solar input, as evidenced by a stable 48°C plateau during energy storage. By marrying waste valorization with leak-proof thermal storage, this work establishes a promising and scalable approach for developing next-generation bio-based energy materials. The coffee ground-derived composites combine renewable feedstock, straightforward preparation, and long-term cyclic durability, suggesting their potential as candidate materials for solar thermal harvesting and storage applications.

Membranes with slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have emerged as highly promising candidates for oil/water separation owing to high separation efficiency and anti-fouling properties. However, the fabrication of SLIPS is complex and often involves organic solvents, posing environmental and cost concerns. This study developed an oleogel-based slippery membrane via a green solvent-free method. A beeswax/paraffin oil oleogel was hot-pressed onto the surface of polypropylene (PP) membrane. The obtained PP-OleG membrane exhibited self-lubricating property, enabling water droplets to slide on the surface. Further infusion of paraffin oil yielded a PP-OleG-oil membrane with enhanced slippery property and anti-protein adhesion. The oleogel and oil layers on the membrane surface demonstrated good stability. Both PP-OleG and PP-OleG-oil membranes outperformed unmodified PP in water-in-oil emulsion separation. Notably, the PP-OleG-oil membrane protected by oleogel and oil layers prevented direct contact between contaminants and the membrane substrate, resulting in excellent anti-fouling performance. After six cycles of filtration, the flux recovery rate reached 86%, and the separation efficiency remained above 98.5%. This oleogel-based membrane offers a feasible approach to enhancing anti-fouling performance in oil/water separation and also provides insights for wastewater treatment through green strategies.

This study investigated the design of bigel co-delivery systems employing gelatin hydrogel and oleogels with lacquer wax (LW), beeswax (BW) or mixed wax (MW) as an oleogelator. The typical T 2 relaxation signals in low-field NMR analysis and microscopic observations indicated that the bigels transitioned from O/H to H/O structure as the hydrogel/oleogel ratio decreased from 8:2 to 6:4, and utilizing MW could obtain bicontinuous structure at a hydrogel/oleogel ratio of 7:3 under our experimental conditions. Polarized microscopic images and XRD analysis revealed that BW-based bigels formed larger needle-like lipid crystals with a β′ form, whereas LW induced smaller β crystals and MW promoted the formation of both β and α polymorphs with intermediate size. This led to the greater elastic modulus (3518-463600 Pa) and hardness (237-1347 gf) of BW-based bigels compare to those containing LW (elastic modulus: 2255-256600 Pa; hardness: 172-317 gf). FTIR analysis indicated no chemical interactions between the gelatin hydrogel and different oleogels. All the bigels presented textural attributes and standardized dysphagia test results (level 6: soft & bite-sized) satisfying the requirement of dysphagia-friendly foods. In vitro digestion assays demonstrated that lower hydrogel/oleogel ratio and the use of BW contributed to reduced release rates of EGCG and Cur. However, when the hydrogel/oleogel ratio was fixed at 7:3, the use of MW resulted in the lowest release rates of EGCG (40.87% ± 0.48%) and Cur (15.15% ± 1.78%) due to the bicontinuous microstructure. These findings provide broader ideas for developing functional foods to accommodate the needs of dysphagia patients.

Superhydrophobic paper offers great promise for applications from daily life to artistic creation and cultural preservation, whereas, the difficulties of transparency, simplicity, mechanical fragility and green sustainability limit its implementation. Inspired by the superhydrophobicity of rice leaves, herein, micro-sized flaky beeswax particles were prepared and creatively mixed with hydrophilic nano-sized amino-modified SiO 2 in diverse ratios, and subsequently sprayed onto polydimethylsiloxane-pretreated Xuan paper surface for obtaining transparent (transmittance value of 37.4% ∼ 43.9%>original paper of 36.6%) superhydrophobic coatings coupled with acid-alkali-resistance, self-cleaning property, and mechanical durability. When the ratio of beeswax particles to SiO 2 is 1:9, the coating maintained its superhydrophobicity (≥150°) after exposure to tape peeling, sandpaper abrasion, finger rubbing, and acid-alkali corrosion (pH = 5, 10). Meanwhile, this coating achieves a 36.7% increase in tensile strength of paper relative to the original one. The superior protective mechanism arises from the strong coating-paper interfacial adhesion, uniform SiO 2 distribution, and the dule role of a spot of beeswax particles in providing both binding and low surface energy. This strategy yields a balanced solution for water-repellent Xuan paper that combines simplicity, sustainability, high strength, and multi-functionality, making it suitable for fragile paper applications.

This study aimed to develop novel bigels as solid fat substitutes and compare the effects of three gelators on their physical properties. Bigels were prepared by mixing whey protein (WPI) hydrogel with glycerol monostearate (GMS), γ-oryzanol/β-sitosterol (SO), and beeswax (BW) based oleogels at different ratios. All bigels exhibited typical hydrogel-in-oleogel (HG/OG) structures as the oleogel content increased from O5:H5 to O8:H2. Among the three systems, GMS-based bigels showed better thermal stability, rheological properties, oil-binding capacity (>97%), and freeze–thaw stability. Their improved oxidative stability was related to the formation of a dense crystalline network, which reduced oil mobility, limited water migration, and slowed oxygen diffusion. In addition, the SVR model showed better prediction performance for POV and TBARS than the PLSR model, with R 2 values above 0.95 and prediction errors below 10%. These findings offer critical structural insights into how different gelators modulate bigels properties, offering the way for the design of healthier solid fat substitutes.

Allicin, a bioactive compound derived from garlic, exhibits therapeutic potential against metabolic disorders but is hindered by instability and a pungent odor, limiting its clinical application. This study develops an allicin oleogel (OG) formulation, leveraging molecular interactions with unsaturated fatty acids and gelators to stabilize allicin and mitigate its odor for transcutaneous delivery. The skin analysis confirmed superior transdermal delivery and accumulation in subcutaneous fat with OG, highlighting its advantages for topical application. In a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model of obesity, OG demonstrated superior efficacy in suppressing weight gain, reducing food intake, and improving metabolic parameters, including fasting blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity, compared to orally administered allicin oleogel (OGO) and metformin (MET). OG also ameliorated non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as evidenced by reduced hepatic lipid accumulation and normalized adipose tissue metabolism. Notably, OG treatment shifted macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype and increased mitochondrial activity, facilitating adipose tissue remodeling and enhancing energy expenditure and thermogenesis. Safety evaluations revealed no systemic toxicity, supporting its potential for long-term use. This study underscores transcutaneously delivered OG as a promising therapeutic strategy for obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Ship icing poses significant safety and operational risks. Although superhydrophobic coatings (SHCs) offer a promising passive anti-icing strategy, their practical application is limited by factors such as poor durability, the environmental constraints of single-function de-icing methods, and ecological issues associated with fluorinated materials. To address these challenges, this study has designed a novel fluorine-free multifunctional superhydrophobic coating that integrates photothermal effects and self-healing capabilities. The coating uses γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) as the key modifier for the fluorine-free modification of epoxy resin; the surface layer achieves self-healing superhydrophobic functionality through the thermal mobility of beeswax, while the bottom layer consists of acetylene black and nanoscale graphite powder to form a conductive network. Leveraging its photothermal and electrothermal effects, the coating can melt accumulated ice via rapid photothermal heating (reaching approximately 90 °C within 300 s). Additionally, through heat-induced conduction of beeswax, the coating can autonomously restore its superhydrophobicity after mechanical or chemical damage and maintain performance over multiple cycles. The resulting coating exhibits strong adhesion to the substrate. After immersion in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 14 days, its corrosion current density is only 2.56 × 10 –10 A/cm 2 , representing a 99.47% improvement compared to silicon-modified epoxy resin (Si-EP). Furthermore, even under prolonged sand particle erosion, the coating retains long-lasting superhydrophobicity. This study provides a promising and scalable strategy for advanced anti-icing applications in marine environments by synergistically combining environmental friendliness, photothermal de-icing, self-healing durability, and enhanced corrosion resistance in a fluorine-free system. Oleogel-based emulsions (OGEs) were fabricated for proanthocyanidin delivery. • Fatty acid saturation tunes OGEs properties by altering crystal stacking modes. • MCT shows superior oxidative stability, while unsaturated oils enhance flexibility. • OGEs significantly enhanced the stability and bioavailability of proanthocyanidins. This study investigated oil-type-dependent variations in molecular packing, crystallization behavior, interfacial properties, rheology, and oxidative stability of oleogel-based emulsions (OGEs), with a focus on correlated gradients of fatty acid saturation, and developed a delivery system to encapsulate the hydrophilic bioactive substance (proanthocyanidins, PAs). Results showed that the fatty acid saturation was associated with molecular stacking and crystal arrangement, further modulating gel strength and thermal stability. Among the tested oils, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) based OGEs exhibited the highest oxidative stability. Varying the oil/water ratio affected thermal stability and antioxidant properties. OGEs with 60% oil phase achieved the highest encapsulation efficiency of PAs. Following simulated digestion, MCT-based OGEs with 70% - 80% oil phase exhibited enhanced free fatty acids (FFAs) release and PAs bioaccessibility. This study demonstrated that fatty acid saturation and oil/water ratio can be rationally tuned to construct a stable and efficient lipid delivery system, providing a theoretical foundation for the design of delivery systems for functional bioactive substances.
