Miniature optical fiber photoacoustic spectroscopy gas sensor based on a 3D micro-printed planar-spiral spring optomechanical resonator

Taige Li,Pengcheng Zhao,Peng Wang,Kummara Venkata Krishnaiah,Wei Jin,A. Ping Zhang

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) gas sensors based on optomechanical resonators (OMRs) have garnered significant attention for ultrasensitive trace-gas detection. However, a major challenge lies in balancing small size with high performance when developing ultrasensitive miniaturized optomechanical resonant PAS (OMR-PAS) gas sensors for space-constrained applications. Here, we present a miniature optical fiber PAS gas sensor based on a planar-spiral spring OMR (PSS-OMR) that is in situ 3D micro-printed on the end-face of a fiber-optic ferrule. Experimental results demonstrate that mechanical vibrational resonance can enhance the sensor's acoustic sensitivity by over two orders of magnitude. Together with a 1.4 μL non-resonant photoacoustic cell, it can detect C 2 H 2 gas concentration at the 45-ppb level, and its response is very fast approximating 0.2 seconds. This optical fiber OMR-PAS gas sensor holds great promise for the detection or monitoring of rapidly varying trace gas in many applications ranging from production process control to industrial environmental surveillance.

An acoustically actuated hydrogel shape-morphing micromachine

Yaxuan Xiao,Xiong Zhao,Li Ma,Yichen Wang,Guoxin Mao,Jinhua Zhang,Bin Fang,Nanjing Hao

Bioinspired by the transformations of animals and plants such as pangolins and mimosas, many biomimetic shape-morphing systems have been developed. However, due to scale effect, microscale interactions become the dominant force, which may make the traditional shape-morphing systems ineffective. Acoustic actuation is expected to overcome this challenge. Here, we have developed an acoustically actuated hydrogel shape-morphing micromachine (AHSMM). It has a variable stiffness design, with the lower stiffness part serving as a flexible hinge to achieve transformation. Under the excitation of acoustic field, the flexible hinge produces strong oscillation and quickly provides the force and torque required for the transformation of AHSMM (generally less than 500 ms). In addition, we have developed a preprogrammed design for the transformation of micromachine to predict its transformation morphology. Furthermore, through the AHSMM, we have separately designed morphing transformations between Chinese characters (e.g., “夫” (fu) to “央” (yang)) and English letters (e.g., “k” to “x”). Finally, we developed a shape-morphing microrobot (width: 174.33 μm) utilizing this flexible hinge, which can pass through a narrow channel through its own shape-morphing, providing great potential in targeted drug delivery (the shape-morphing time is less than 100 ms, the forward speed can reach about 800 μm/s). Our work not only provides innovative ideas for shape-morphing design at the microscale, but also expands the coupling applications of acoustics, soft matter, and microrobots.

High micromechanical interlocking graphene oxide/carboxymethyl cellulose composite architectures for enhancing the interface adhesion between carbon fiber and epoxy

Baowei Qiu,Tong Sun,Muxuan Li,Yang Chen,Shengtai Zhou,Mei Liang,Huawei Zou

The interface performance of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) is one of the key factors that affect their properties. In order to improve the interface adhesion between CF and epoxy (EP), a green method is proposed. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and graphene oxide (GO) are introduced to the CF surface through the hydrogen bonds, and they can form high micromechanical interlocking composite architectures, which can enhance the micromechanical interaction in the interface of CF and EP. It is found that CMC and GO can significantly improve the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of EP/CF composite. This means that it has great potential to improve the interface of CFRPs and strengthen their performance by natural cellulose fibers. This modification method does no harm to CF and is environmental friendliness, which lays a research foundation for using natural cellulose to enhance the interface performance of CFRPs.

Dual Micromechanical Interlocking Through Filler Surface Modification for Enhanced Dental Composites

Hongyan Chen,Jiaxuan Lyu,Jia Nie,Xuhui Wang,Na Yang,Sheng Han,Mingliang Zhou

A novel structure–functional-integrated particle featuring dual micromechanical interlocking property with resin matrix was constructed through surface modification of urchin-like serried hydroxyapatite (UHA) in this work, and the effect of this modification strategy on physicochemical and biological properties of dental resin composite was also investigated. A porous silica coating layer was anchored onto UHA surface via a simple template method in an oil−water biphase reaction system, and the coating time had a prominent effect on the coating thickness and morphology-structure of the particle. When these particles with different porous silica coating thickness were used as fillers for dental resin composite, results showed that UHA/PS5 (porous silica coating reaction time: 5 h) exhibited the optimal 3D urchin-like structure and a desirable porous silica coating thickness. Additionally, UHA/PS5 formed the best dual physical micromechanical interlocking structure when mixing with resin matrix, making the dental resin composites presented the desirable matrix/filler interfacial bonding, and the excellent physicochemical–biological properties, especially for flexural strength and water sorption-solubility. In vitro remineralization and cellular biological properties confirmed that the coating layer did not compromise their remineralization activity. The use of UHA/PSx provides a promising approach to develop strong, durable, and biocompatible DRCs.

Dynamic Network- and Microcellular Architecture-Driven Biomass Elastomer toward Sustainable and Versatile Soft Electronics

Liu Shanqiu,Shen Yi,Li Yizhen,Mo Yunjie,Yu Enze,Ge Taotao,Li Ping,Li Jingguo

Conductive elastomers combining micromechanical sensitivity, lightweight adaptability, and environmental sustainability are critically needed for advanced flexible electronics requiring precise responsiveness and long-term wearability; however, the integration of these properties remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a biomass-derived conductive elastomer featuring a rationally engineered dynamic crosslinked network integrated with a tunable microporous architecture. This structural design imparts pronounced micromechanical sensitivity, an ultralow density (~ 0.25 g cm −3 ), and superior mechanical compliance for adaptive deformation. Moreover, the unique micro-spring effect derived from the porous architecture ensures exceptional stretchability (> 500% elongation at break) and superior resilience, delivering immediate and stable electrical response under both subtle (< 1%) and large (> 200%) mechanical stimuli. Intrinsic dynamic interactions endow the elastomer with efficient room temperature self-healing and complete recyclability without compromising performance. First-principles simulations clarify the mechanisms behind micropore formation and the resulting functionality. Beyond its facile and mild fabrication process, this work establishes a scalable route toward high-performance, sustainable conductive elastomers tailored for next-generation soft electronics.

Monodomain liquid crystal elastomer bionic muscle fibers with excellent mechanical and actuation properties

Xu Dong,Xiaoshuang Zhou,Lvzhou Li,Xiaoting Cao,Jiawei Xu,Shengping Dai,Yaoyao Jiang,Qingyue Li,Ningyi Yuan,Jianning Ding

Monodomain liquid crystal elastomers (m-LCEs) exhibit large reversible deformations when subjected to light and heat stimuli. Herein, we developed a new method for the large-scale continuous preparation of m-LCE fibers. These m-LCE fibers exhibit a reversible contraction ratio of 55.6%, breaking strength of 162 MPa (withstanding a load of 1 million times its weight), and maximum output power density of 1250 J/kg, surpassing those of previously reported m-LCEs. These excellent mechanical properties are mainly attributed to the formation of a homogeneous molecular network. Furthermore, the fabrication of m-LCEs with permanent plasticity using m-LCEs with impermanent instability without external intervention was realized by the synergistic effects of the self-restraint of mesogens and the prolonged relaxation process of LCEs. The designed LCE fibers, which are similar to biological muscle fibers and can be easily integrated, exhibit broad application prospects in artificial muscles, soft robots, and micromechanical systems.

Biomimetic SIS-based biocomposites with improved biodegradability, antibacterial activity and angiogenesis for abdominal wall repair

Guangxiu Cao,Cunyang Wang,Yubo Fan,Xiaoming Li

Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is a widely concerned acellular material for reconstructing tissue defects, but during the restoration of abdominal wall, it has been restricted due to the fast degradation causing poor long-term mechanical properties, the infection caused by bacteria contamination, and insufficient neovascularization post-operation. In this study, we developed a biomimetic SIS-based biocomposite (CS/ES-SIS) for abdominal wall repair, in which chitosan (CS) and elastin (ES) electrospun nanofibers were used to improve the biodegradability, antibacterial activity, and angiogenesis. The CS/ES-SIS composites were examined through a series of testing experiments, especially in vitro degradation was assessed by a constant deformation loading device and the micromechanical properties during enzymatic degradation under biomechanical environment were measured by nanoindentation. In vitro antibacterial test and cytocompatibility, and in vivo biocompatibility, neovascularisation and tissue regeneration were also investigated. The main research results as follows: (1) After 7 days enzymatic degradation under biomechanical environment, the degradation rate of CS/ES-SIS composites was slower than that of SIS by about 24.5%. Moreover, the CS/ES-SIS composites could better maintain the stability of microstructure and micromechanical properties compared with SIS. (2) The antibacterial rates of CS/ES-SIS composites against E. coli and S. aureus were respectively 98.87% and 98.26% while the SIS demonstrated no obvious antibacterial capacity. (3) The CS/ES-SIS composites supported the viability and proliferation of fibroblast cell L929. In vivo studies showed that the CS/ES-SIS composites could promote tissue regeneration upon implantation without serious inflammatory reaction. Additionally, the vascular number in the CS/ES-SIS composites was as 1.69 times as that in the SIS at 4 weeks. Collectively, all the findings suggested that the newly developed CS/ES-SIS composites might be promising and attractive candidates for applications of abdominal wall repair.

Magnetic-driven micro-gear pair fabricated by femtosecond laser writing

Sida Peng,Xiaonan Lei,Shengzhi Sun,Yi Zhu,Jianrong Qiu,Huayong Yang

Gear transmission holds paramount significance for intricate mechanical systems. However, when the size of the driving gear is miniaturized to less than 50 microns, both manufacturing and control meet challenges. Here, a magnetic-driven micro-gear pair (MMGP) and its manipulation strategy are proposed. The MMGP is composed of two micro-gears fabricated by the two-photon polymerization (TPP) and its manipulation strategy depends on the gear engagement. The driving gear was processed with a magnetic photoresist and can rotate stably with a rapid rotation response (<100 ms) under the control of an external magnetic field. The driven gear can be driven by the driving gear through the meshing relationship of the gear teeth. As a proof of concept, number counters and the delivery of drugs are achieved by specially designed MMGPs. This development establishes a pivotal foundation for micro-gear transmission in complex intelligent systems, microfluid operation, and biological manipulation. Biomimetic low-temperature contracting fiber for high stroke and controllable actuations

Ming Xiaojuan,Ding Xincheng,Wang Henry Ming,Lu Jing,Ke Yiming,Li Yue,Luo Jing,Li Mufang,Xiong Yi,Zhao Tao,Zhong Weibing

Flexible actuators have significant potential in intelligent micromachines, artificial muscle, and soft robotics. However, achieving actuators with high actuation performance and feedback sensitivity remains challenging. Inspired by the dual “command-execution-feedback” of the mimic octopus, a fiber actuator with high stroke and visual-electronic dual feedback is designed by introducing an ionic liquid conductive network and a visual component of spiropyrane. By constructing a unique interchain slipping structure inside the liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), the nematic to isotropic transition temperature and maximum stroke temperature dropped to 24.29 °C and 62.3 °C, with decreases of 73.51% and 39.28%, respectively. Besides, the actuation stroke increases to 43.41% with an improvement of 77.11%, and the feedback sensitivity reaches to 69.17, along with a high work capacity of 189.12 kJ/m 3 . These provide a promising strategy for next-generation flexible actuators capable of high work capacity, large stroke, and real-time feedback.
