PVC gel bio-inspired adhesives with variable modulus and its application in a gripper

Zhang Hao,He Qing-song,Tian Cheng-bo,Wu Yu-wei,Zhao Ze-fang,Yu Min

Inspired by the microstructure of gecko’s toe, two kinds of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels with different modulus were poured on a silicon mold with micropillars, and then a bio-inspired adhesive with variable modulus was manufactured in this study. The adhesions of variable modulus and fixed modulus bio-inspired adhesives were tested, respectively, on a smooth glass and a printed circuit board (PCB) with different surface structures. The results show that PVC gel bio-inspired adhesives with variable modulus have many advantages compared with the fixed modulus bio-inspired adhesives. The adhesion of variable modulus bio-inspired adhesives on the rough PCB surface increased by 2–5 times, and due to the use of variable modulus of PVC gel, the surface micropillars can maintain high aspect ratio and flexible tips at the same time. Moreover, the use of PVC gel makes it easier to demold during the bio-inspired adhesives preparation. An adhesion-desorption device was made according to the movement of the gecko toes, and the PCB was successfully grasped.

Superhydrophobic shape memory film with switchable adhesion to both water and solid

Haiyang Zhang,Hua Lai,Zhongjun Cheng,Dongjie Zhang,Wu Wang,Pengchang Liu,Xiaoyan Yu,Zhimin Xie,Yuyan Liu

Recently, inspired by gecko’s smart adhesion, many intelligent adhesive surfaces have been reported. However, all of these are focused on single adhesion to liquid or solid, to obtain a surface with switchable adhesion to both water and solid is still a challenge. Herein, by coating a layer of polyurethane (PU) with micropillar structures onto a shape memory polymer (SMP) substrate to imitate the skin and muscle of the gecko’s foot, respectively, we report a new shape memory film that can repeatedly display curved/unfolded shapes with the help of the excellent shape memory property. Research results indicate that besides the variation of the contact area, a proper surface energy is also crucial for the special adhesion. Furthermore, based on the smart adhesive performance, in-situ capture/release of both solid and liquid were demonstrated by using the film. This research proposes a film with tunable adhesion to both solid and liquid, which provides a fresh idea for designing novel adhesive film, and meanwhile broadens the application of the adhesive materials.

Highly sensitive flexible iontronic pressure sensor for marine pressure monitoring

Yuhang Wang,Menghui Xiang,Jihao Li,Shuting Yang,Jiefei Li,Qi Wen,Libo Gao,Junyang Li

Flexible pressure sensors hold considerable promise for applications in marine pressure detection due to their highly conformal capability to accommodate the nonplanar surface. However, fabricating a flexible pressure sensor with heightened sensitivity under substantial hydrostatic pressure in oceanic environments presents an enormous challenge due to the large underwater electromechanical noise. Herein, a flexible iontronic pressure sensor with micropillars was developed to maintain high sensitivity under large pressure loads. This sensor demonstrates excellent sensitivity (14.02 kPa -1 , 9.60 kPa -1 ) and linear response (R 2 = 0.9956, 0.9901) in air and water, respectively. The pressure sensor exhibits the capability to detect minimal water depth changes of 2 cm, offering discernible responses to pressures spanning from a few kPa to several hundred kPa. Even after its immersion in water for 25 days and 2000 testing cycles, the sensor maintains a high degree of performance consistency. This demonstrates the promising application prospects in autonomous underwater vehicles, diving equipment and marine life monitoring platforms.

Self-Assembly of 3D-Printed Multiscale Micropillar-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Ultrasensitive Dopamine Sensing

Xinzhao Zhou,Liwen Zhang,Shengbin Zhang,Jing Liang,Ke Zhang,Zehui Zhao,Song Zhao,Yan Wang,Yurun Guo,Deyuan Zhang,Lei Jiang,Huawei Chen

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with self-amplification have emerged as a promising approach for dopamine monitoring. However, the planar gate electrode structures in current OECTs significantly hinder the improvement of sensitive dopamine detection. Here, we develop an aerosol jet three-dimensional (3D) printing method to generate multiscale micropillar-based OECTs with tunable nanofeatures for ultrasensitive DA detection. Temperature-induced self-assembly nanoclusters are explored to replace atomized microdroplets to generate multiscale micropillars, and their diameter-tuning mechanism is clarified to enable on-demand nanofeature control. We fabricate micropillar electrodes with varying surface morphologies, array numbers, and heights, and uncover their micronano synergic enhancement effects on the mass transfer, catalytic efficiency, and ion migration that determine the sensing performance of the OECT. When the nanocluster diameter is 540 nm, the OECT achieves a maximized sensitivity of 254 mV/decade and an ultralow dopamine detection limit of 0.6 fM, which is 6 orders of magnitude lower than current methods. Integrated with a flexible circuit, the device allows real-time, wireless, and highly sensitive dopamine sensing in the rabbit brain, demonstrating its potential for future applications in the precise diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses.
