A suitable humidity environment is of great significance to the healthy and comfortable life of urban residents, and the humidification effect of street trees is crucial for effectively regulating microclimates in big cities. Therefore, evaluating the humidification capacity among species is a rewarding research aiming at providing bases for selecting appropriate street tree species. The leaves of trees generate water vapor through transpiration to slowly increase the environmental humidity, and humidity sensors with giant response, excellent linearity, and reliable repeatability are more conducive to analyzing and evaluating the subtle process in detail. Here, the antisolvent method was adopted to simplify the synthesis process of lead-free K2CuBr3, and the fabricated impedance-type humidity sensor based on K2CuBr3 microrods satisfied these requirements. The all-inorganic lead-free halide K2CuBr3 overcomes two drawbacks, including the toxicity of Pb and the moisture instability of most reported halide perovskites used in the field of humidity sensing. The impedance variation exceeds 106 Ω (162 Ω to 182 MΩ), with the relative humidity varying from 12 to 95%. In addition, the analysis of the corresponding complex impedance spectroscopy revealed the sensing mechanism. The intrinsic properties of K2CuBr3 are reflected at low humidity, and the proton transfer gradually dominates the sensing paths with increasing humidity. Furthermore, the K2CuBr3 humidity-sensitive layer is employed to evaluate the transpiration of street trees for the first time, and the successful evaluation of the humidification effect indicates more applications of lead-free halides.

The excellent stretchability and biocompatibility of flexible sensors have inspired an emerging field of plant wearables that enable intimate contact with plants to monitor growth status and local microclimate in real-time continuously. Flexible plant wearables provide a promising platform for the development of plant phenotypes. In this work, we have fabricated several plant wearables that can harmlessly and continuously monitor leaf temperature/humidity, which are critical parameters for analyzing the physiological status and microclimate of plants. Credited to the unique semi-embedded design and the selected biocompatible materials, we achieve ultrathin sensors with a conductive layer thickness of 7 μm, exhibiting excellent electrical conductivity with 9.43 × 10 6 S/m, bendability and fatigue resistance with 0.99 % change rate after 10,000 cyclic bending tests, enabling on-site and non-destructive testing. These plant wearables can be used as a non-invasive, high-throughput, low-cost toolbox with excellent potential for phenotypic analysis.

Glasshouse plants are species that trap warmth via specialized morphology and physiology, mimicking a human glasshouse. In the Himalayan alpine region, the highly specialized glasshouse morphology has independently evolved in distinct lineages to adapt to intensive UV radiation and low temperature. Here we demonstrate that the glasshouse structure – specialized cauline leaves – is highly effective in absorbing UV light but transmitting visible and infrared light, creating an optimal microclimate for the development of reproductive organs. We reveal that this glasshouse syndrome has evolved at least three times independently in the rhubarb genus Rheum . We report the genome sequence of the flagship glasshouse plant Rheum nobile and identify key genetic network modules in association with the morphological transition to specialized glasshouse leaves, including active secondary cell wall biogenesis, upregulated cuticular cutin biosynthesis, and suppression of photosynthesis and terpenoid biosynthesis. The distinct cell wall organization and cuticle development might be important for the specialized optical property of glasshouse leaves. We also find that the expansion of LTRs has likely played an important role in noble rhubarb adaptation to high elevation environments. Our study will enable additional comparative analyses to identify the genetic basis underlying the convergent occurrence of glasshouse syndrome.
