Dendrite suppression by scalable acid treatment of zinc metal anodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Huanlin Lyu,Suihan Cui,Chao Huang,Qingdong Ruan,Xiaolin Zhang,Junmin Xu,Fangyu Xiong,Dan Li,Paul K. Chu

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are desirable energy storage devices because of their low cost, safety, abundant Zn reserve, and environmental friendliness. However, Zn dendrite growth remains the main reason limiting the life span of ZIBs. Herein, a quick, simple, and scalable hydrochloric acid (HCl) treatment is designed to suppress the formation of Zn dendrites on Zn metal anodes. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy reveal that the initial surface structure of the Zn metal anode determines the subsequent plating/stripping behavior. By soaking the Zn foil in HCl for 5 s (HCl-5 Zn), microgrooves are formed on the surface, but longer immersion destroys the special structure. This special microgroove structure homogenizes the electric field on the surface of the Zn plate, giving rise to more uniform Zn deposition. Compared to the pristine and over-processed Zn electrodes, HCl-5 Zn shows less Zn nucleation and smaller plating overpotentials resulting in suppression of Zn dendrites. Furthermore, HCl-5 Zn tends to deposit on the (002) plane of Zn to improve the cycling stability of the cell compared to the (001) plane of Zn. The symmetrical cell composed of the HCl-5 Zn anode exhibits small voltage hysteresis and excellent cycling stability. The cycling characteristics and low voltage polarization are improved, as demonstrated by the assembled symmetrical and full batteries comprising the K0.5V2O5@CC cathode. Moreover, the strategy is suitable for flexible batteries with hydrogel as the electrolyte. The results reveal a simple strategy to minimize dendrite formation and provide insights into the commercial development of ZIBs.

3D printed aluminum flat heat pipes with micro grooves for efficient thermal management of high power LEDs

Chang Chao,Han Zhaoyang,He Xiaoyu,Wang Zongyu,Ji Yulong

As the electronic technology becomes increasingly integrated and miniaturized, thermal management has become a major challenge for electronic device applications. A heat pipe is a highly efficient two-phase heat transfer device. Due to its simple structure, high thermal conductivity and good temperature uniformity, it has been used in many different industrial fields. A novel aluminum flat heat pipe, with micro-grooves, has in the present work been designed and fabricated by using a 3D printing technology. Aluminum powder was used as a raw material, which was selectively melted and solidified to form the shape of the heat pipe. The sintered aluminum powder increased the roughness of the inner surface of the heat pipe, and the designed micro-grooves further enhanced the capillary forces induced by the wick structure. The wettability, for the working fluid (acetone), was excellent and the capillary forces were sufficient for the working fluid to flow back in the pipe. The effects of working fluid filling ratio, on the heat transfer performance of the heat pipe, was also investigated. It was shown that a filling ratio of 10% gave the best heat transfer performance with the lowest thermal resistance. The 3D-printed flat heat pipe was, therefore, also tested for the thermal management of a LED. The temperature of the LED could be kept within 40 °C and its service life became prolonged.

A novel non-invasive method for measuring the spatial kinematic behavior of cardiomyocytes regulated by mechanical cues

Si Tang,Huiyao Shi,Jialin Shi,Zhenghua Wang,Dingyi Wang,Chanmin Quanmin Su,Lianqing Liu

The intact heart undergoes complex and multiscale mechanical remodeling processes. Measuring rhythmic spatial contraction of the myocardium is crucial for assessing mechanical durability and the ability to mount coordinated responses to pressure, electrical, and hemodynamic signals. However, current cardiomyocyte measurement platforms typically focus on action potentials and XY-plane contractions. Therefore, effective evaluation methods for studying the influence of mechanical cues on the spatial dynamic contraction of cardiomyocytes are still lacking. In this study, we developed a topographic guiding combined with an optical spatial motion tracking method to provide controllable mechanical stimulation for inducing directed contraction of cardiomyocytes and obtaining spatial motion information in vitro . We first performed a detailed investigation of cell connections and cytoskeleton orientations by combining the proposed method with immunofluorescence. Next, spatial constrictive modes, features, and key parameters of microgroove-guided cardiomyocytes were studied. Finally, the three-dimensional (3D) motions of the cardiomyocytes at different positions on the structure were compared. We found that the XY-plane contraction of cardiomyocytes typically has only one direction and shows a significant phase delay compared to the axial motion. In addition, cardiomyocytes located near the edges of the microgrooves were restricted by stronger mechanical forces, resulting in a significant height change reduction. These results provide new perspectives for structural and functional research on cardiomyocytes under long-term mechanical regulation. Overall, this study provides a highly precise and convenient method for evaluating the 3D cardiomyocyte motion under mechanical induction. This method is expected to enhance understanding of cardiomyocyte development and be useful for research on cardiac mechanics and functions.

An ultrasensitive flexible force sensor with nature-inspired minimalistic architecture to achieve a detection resolution and threshold of 1 mN for underwater applications

Peilin Cao,Cong Wang,Shichao Niu,Zhiwu Han,Linpeng Liu,Ji’an Duan

Highly sensitive flexible force sensors enable precise detection of underwater signals for monitoring biological activity, environmental conditions, and vehicle movement. Multilayer stack assembly and micro/nano structure array are often seen in most force/pressure sensors which are toughly hard to control the interlayer spacing and micro/nano structures alignment precisely, resulting in poor consistency and stability. Herein, we first reported a new force sensor with a nature-inspired minimalistic architecture, addressing such issues in an elegant and surprising approach by using a single-layer arched functional membrane with one microgroove. Inspired by the scorpions’ slit sensilla and mantis’ campaniform sensilla, a highly sensitive and waterproof flexible force sensor was fabricated. It is demonstrated that the force sensor has a sensitivity of 27.6 N −1 , a high force resolution (1 mN), a fast response time of 70 ms, excellent stability over 5000 cycles and linearity (0.996), and a small force detection limit (≤ 1 mN), showing great potential in underwater environment sensing and motion monitoring of vehicles. This novel but minimalistic architecture provides a new direction in the development of sensors with advanced performance.

Biofunctionalization of microgroove titanium surfaces with an antimicrobial peptide to enhance their bactericidal activity and cytocompatibility

Lin Zhou,Yingzhen Lai,Wenxiu Huang,Sijia Huang,Zhiqiang Xu,Jiang Chen,Dong Wu

A firm peri-implant soft tissue seal is important for the long-term survival of dental implants, which demands the properties of antibacterial and cytocompatibility of the implant surfaces. In this study, GL13K, a cationic antimicrobial peptide, was immobilized onto microgroove surfaces which were 60   μm in width and 10   μm in depth, and the modified surfaces improved both the properties of antibacterial and cytocompatibility. The method of silanization was used to immobilize the antimicrobial peptide GL13K, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle measurement. Then the mechanical stability of the coatings was confirmed by ultrasonication. In vitro antibacterial tests confirmed bactericidal activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis without inhibiting its adhesion. In vitro cytocompatibility tests also confirmed that adhesion at later phase and proliferation of HGFs were greater ( P   <   0.01) on the GL13K-modified microgroove surfaces than on the non-treated microgroove surfaces, and both of them were greater than on the smooth surfaces. The phenomenon of the contact guidance, which is cell growth aligned along the microgrooves, was maintained. Overall, this study developed a promising bi-functional surface that combined the physical and chemical properties to promote cytocompatibility and antibacterial activity simultaneously.
