Rapid decolorization of dye Orange G by microwave enhanced Fenton-like reaction with delafossite-type CuFeO2

Mei-Qiang Cai,Yi-Zu Zhu,Zong-Su Wei,Jian-Qiang Hu,Sheng-Dong Pan,Rui-Yang Xiao,Chun-Ying Dong,Mi-Cong Jin

Bimetallic oxide CuFeO 2 as a new heterogeneous catalyst has shown much higher catalytic ability for activating peroxide than single-metal oxides. The present work demonstrated a synergistic microwave (MW) enhanced Fenton-like process with CuFeO 2 for rapid decolorization of azo dye Orange G (OG). The MW irradiation dramatically enhanced the OG degradation efficiency, achieving 99.9% decolorization within 15   min at pH   5. The XRD analysis of reused CuFeO 2 , together with metal leaching tests, indicated merits of recycling for CuFeO 2 . The subsequent surface element analysis by XPS for fresh and used CuFeO 2 showed a complex network for reactions between copper-iron redox pairs and surface hydroxyl groups, leading to a synergistic Fenton-like system accelerated by MW irradiation. In the CuFeO 2 initiated Fenton-like reactions, several oxidant species (i.e., OH, O 2 − , electron hole , and Fe IV   O) responsible to the OG oxidation were identified by quenching experiments, showing the MW generated high temperature and “hot spots” enhanced the yield of OH by generation of electron-hole pairs. Further, the 26 detected degradation products confirmed the OH dominant oxidation of OG. This study shows that the MW-enhanced Fenton-like reaction using CuFeO 2 has potential applications for rapid decolorization of dye effluent.

Transformational fixation of Cr(VI) during microwave-enhanced reduction of soil iron minerals by tea polyphenols

Yuliang Tu,Jianle Wang,Yanfeng Huang,Hong Deng,Xueming Liu,Jiaxin Lv

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] presents substantial environmental and health hazards due to its pronounced toxicity and mobility in soils. Traditional chemical reduction methods for Cr(VI) are often inadequate for treating chromium-contaminated soils, as they may fail to fully reduce Cr(VI), leading to incomplete remediation. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop more efficient and environmentally sustainable methods for the treatment of hexavalent chromium. This study explores an innovative approach using microwave-enhanced reduction of soil iron minerals facilitated by tea polyphenols to achieve transformational fixation of Cr(VI). The microwave-assisted treatment (0.5 wt% TP combined with MW at 700 W for 10 min) significantly reduced Cr(VI) concentrations in iron-rich soil from 363.4 mg kg −1 to 0.3 mg kg −1 , achieving a removal rate of 99.9%, compared to TP treatment alone (0.5 wt%). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that the enhanced removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by microwave-assisted tea polyphenols is attributable to the accelerated reduction of soil iron minerals by the polyphenols. Furthermore, microwave enhancement facilitated the transformation of Cr into more stable forms, such as Cr 2 O 3 and FeCr 2 O 4 . Additionally, the Cr(VI) content in the treated soil remained below 3 mg kg −1 after 360 days of atmospheric exposure, indicating sustained immobilization. This study demonstrates that the integration of tea polyphenols with microwave irradiation constitutes a promising strategy for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soils.

Enhanced separation of different layers in photovoltaic panel by microwave field

Sheng Pang,Yang Yan,Zhi Wang,Dong Wang,Shijian Li,Wenhui Ma,Kuixian Wei

With the rapid increase of photovoltaic (PV) system production and installation, the recycling of end-of-life PV modules has become a grave issue. In this paper, a new method of microwave-enhanced EVA film swelling and separation for PV panels recycling was innovatively proposed. The results showed that the separation speed of different layers in microwave can be significantly accelerated. Different swelling agents were compared and trichloroethylene was proved to be the most effective. The analysis of dielectric loss and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of different layers indicated that the good absorbing property of antireflection layer and the difference of TEC accelerate the swelling separation. Different conditions such as temperature and liquid-solid ratio were also carried out to optimized separation. The mechanism of microwave enhanced EVA swelling has been analyzed by thermogravimetry and infrared analysis. This study has a good guiding significance for the green and efficient recycling of PV panels.

Microwave Enhanced Solidification of Gaseous Mercury from Flue Gas by a Novel Selenium Functional FeCo-LDH Based Halloysite Adsorbent

Yuan-Ming Cao,Xue-Lei Duan,Miao Bian,Hou-Yu Wang,Yi-Wen Shen,Chong Gao,Chun-Gang Yuan

The immobilization of Hg0 and detoxication of Hg-containing composites are enormous challenges for Hg pollution control, which provide a high requirement for the design and synthesis of materials. Herein, a new composite with halloysite, selenium, and transition metals as raw materials (FeCo-LDH/HNTs@Se) for a Hg0 trap was designed by precipitation with ion exchange and an in situ selenization method. Intrinsic features such as high affinity, microwave permittivity (109–1012), large surface area, abundant pores, and many active components favored Hg0 removal and immobilization. The removal performance, flue gas tolerance, and synergistic effect of active components were improved greatly when microwave was added. The study indicated that (1) the Hg0 removal efficiency of the composite could reach 99.4%; (2) the composite had excellent tolerance to different industries’ flue gases. The electron exchange of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) and the existence of Se and SeO2 were important for Hg0 immobilization. HgSe was the main adsorption product based on both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and an online lab-built thermal decomposition system (TPD-AFS) analysis, which made the used-materials possess low mercury leaching content (0.09 mg·L–1) lower than the US EPA regulatory value (0.2 mg·L–1). This work provides a sound way for mercury control, which is significant for environmental protection.

Application of BiFeO3-based on nickel foam composites with a highly efficient catalytic activity and easily recyclable in Fenton-like process under microwave irradiation

Shuo Li,Guangshan Zhang,Heshan Zheng,Yongjie Zheng,Peng Wang

In this study, BiFeO 3 (BFO) powders decorated on nickel foam (NF) with a high catalytic activity are prepared via a one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal method . The factors that influence the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) with BFO/NFs as catalysts are optimized to improve the catalytic activity in a microwave-enhanced Fenton-like process. BFO/NF exhibit a superior catalytic activity with a high BPA removal ratio (98.4%) and TOC removal ratio (69.5%) within 5 min. Results indicate that NF significantly affect the improvement of the catalytic activity of BFO because it served as a source of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) during degradation. The amount of • OH generated by BFO/NF is approximately 1.65-fold higher than that by pure BFO. After six reaction cycles, the stability and reusability of • OH remain high. These findings provide new insights into the synthesis of composites on heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency and easy recyclability for water treatment applications.

Effect of Synthesis Conditions on the Catalytic Performances of CuO/Al2O3 in Microwave-enhanced Fenton-like System

Cao Menghan,Tian Ke,Shi Fengyin,Zhang Guangshan

Background: In previous work, we successfully prepared CuO/Al2O3 catalysts and evaluated their catalytic activity, kinetics and degradation mechanism for Fenton-like oxidation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under microwave irradiation. However, we did not study the effect of important preparation parameters on the activities of catalysts. Objectives: (1) The effect of preparation conditions: CuSO4 concentration of the impregnating solution, Al2O3 to CuSO4 solution ratio, type and concentration of precipitant and calcination temperature on the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity were studied. (2) The catalytic performance of the Fenton-like oxidation reaction of PNP under microwave irradiation was evaluated and correlated with the characterization results. (3) The stability and catalytic mechanism of the catalysts were investigated. Methods: The CuO/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by the impregnation deposition method. The 20 g pretreated Al2O3 particles were immersed in 0.6 mol/L Cu (NO3)2 solution and 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for 24 h before and after. After cleaning and drying, the samples were calcined in an air muffle furnace for 4 h at a certain temperature to obtain CuO/Al2O3 catalyst. Then the catalyst was characterized and catalyzed. Results: XRD, BET and FESEM results have demonstrated that the catalyst claimed at 300 and 350°C showed a smaller size, a higher specific surface area and a better distribution of the CuO species than their counterparts prepared at higher calcination temperatures. The CuO/Al2O3 catalyst claimed at 300 and 350°C also showed higher removal efficiencies for PNP than other catalysts prepared at higher calcination temperatures. Conclusion: It was found that the catalysts prepared at 350°C as calcination temperature showed higher surface area, smaller CuO particle size, and uniform CuO particle size distribution, and consequently showed better catalytic activities with better stability and reusability. Moreover, the XPS results of the catalysts showed a decrease in the Isat/Ip ratio after microwave enhanced Fenton- like reaction, confirming that CuO species has been reduced to Cu2O to some extent.

Microwave enhanced catalytic hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde using simultaneous cooling: Experimental and theoretical studies

Qinglong Xie,Yuqiang Zhou,Yilei Wang,Tongbo Pan,Ying Duan,Shangzhi Yu,Weirong Ji,Yong Nie

Catalytic hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) is a key step for the chemical production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from renewable glycerol. However, a main issue of low reaction rate and long reaction time exists in the conventional hydration process. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system for the efficient conversion of acrolein to 3-HPA. Simultaneous cooling method was adopted to maintain continuous microwave irradiation and meanwhile stable temperature during the reaction. The effects of catalyst type, temperature, catalyst loading and microwave power on acrolein conversion and 3-HPA selectivity were examined. Kinetic study showed that microwave irradiation could help for the reduction in activation energy, which led to acceleration in reaction rate during the acrolein hydration process. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the adsorption and reaction behavior of reactants molecules on the catalyst are consistent with the experimental results, which confirm the intensification effect of the microwave field.

Multifunctional Nanoplatform for Mild Microwave-Enhanced Thermal, Antioxidative, and Chemotherapeutic Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Lianying Zhang,Wei Meng,Xiaotong Chen,Libo Wu,Mingwa Chen,Zhaoxi Zhou,Yongjian Chen,Lixia Yuan,Ming Chen,Jinxiang Chen,Pixian Shui

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is usually associated with excessive proliferation of M1-type proinflammatory macrophages, resulting in severe hypoxia and excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the joint cavity. Inhibiting M1-type proinflammatory macrophages and/or repolarizing them into M2 phenotype anti-inflammatory cells by alleviating hypoxia and scavenging ROS could be a promising strategy for RA treatment. In this work, a microwave-sensitive metal–organic framework of UiO-66-NH2 is constructed for coating a nanoenzyme of cerium oxide (CeO2) and loading with the drug celastrol (Cel) to give UiO-66-NH2/CeO2/Cel, which is ultimately wrapped with hyaluronic acid (HA) to form a nanocomposite UiO-66-NH2/CeO2/Cel@HA (UCCH). With the microwave-susceptible properties of UiO-66-NH2, the thermal effect of microwaves can eliminate the excessive proliferation of inflammatory cells. In addition, superoxide-like and catalase-like activities originating from CeO2 in UCCH are boosted to scavenge ROS and accelerate the decomposition of H2O2 to produce O2 under microwave irradiation. The nonthermal effect of microwaves could synergistically promote the repolarization of M1-type macrophages into the M2 phenotype. Accompanied by the release of the anti-RA chemotherapeutic drug Cel, UCCH can efficiently ameliorate RA in vitro and in vivo through microwave-enhanced multisynergistic effects. This strategy could inspire the design of other multisynergistic platforms enhanced by microwaves to exploit new treatment modalities in RA therapies.

Manganese-Based Immunomodulatory Nanocomposite with Catalase-Like Activity and Microwave-Enhanced ROS Elimination Ability for Efficient Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapy

Xiaotong Chen,Lianying Zhang,Haifeng Zeng,Wei Meng,Guijiang Liu,Wenhua Zhang,Pei Zhao,Qun Zhang,Ming Chen,Jinxiang Chen

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease commonly associated with the accumulation of hyperactive immune cells (HICs), particularly macrophages of pro-inflammatory (M1) phenotype, accompanied by the elevated level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), decreased pH and O 2 content in joint synovium. In this work, an immunomodulatory nanosystem (IMN) is developed for RA therapy by modulating and restoring the function of HICs in inflamed tissues. Manganese tetraoxide nanoparticles (Mn 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles anchored on UiO-66-NH 2 are designed, and then the hybrid is coated with Mn-EGCG film, further wrapped with HA to obtain the final nanocomposite of UiO-66-NH 2 @Mn 3 O 4 /Mn-EGCG@HA (termed as UMnEH). When UMnEH diffuses to the inflammatory site of RA synovium, the stimulation of microwave (MW) irradiation and low pH trigger the slow dissociation of Mn-EGCG film. Then the endogenously overexpressed hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) disintegrates the exposed Mn 3 O 4 NPs to promote ROS scavenging and O 2 generation. Assisted by MW irradiation, the elevated O 2 content in the RA microenvironment down-regulates the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). Coupled with the clearance of ROS, it promotes the re-polarization of M1 phenotype macrophages into anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotype macrophages. Therefore, the multifunctional UMnEH nanoplatform, as the IMN, exhibits a promising potential to modulate and restore the function of HICs and has an exciting prospect in the treatment of RA.
