Fluorescent materials are extensively utilized in anti-counterfeiting and security applications, and surface cleanliness is crucial for preserving their functionality. This study presents a novel hydrophobic fluorescent coating characterized by a morphology in which particles are semi-embedded and evenly dispersed within the primer. The coating was developed using an innovative method that involves spraying hydrophobic silica onto a microscopically dissolved fluorescent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) primer. The coating demonstrates superior hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 165.0° ± 5.0° and a sliding angle of 3.0°, as well as an outstanding luminous intensity 541.4 mcd/m 2 . Due to strong primer and semi-embedded particle binding, the coating shows good durability. After 80 wear treatment, the hydrophobic properties of the fluorescent coating were largely maintained. After 32 days of exposure to 0.68 W/m 2 ultraviolet light, the contact angle decreased from 160.0° to 154.7° (with a sliding angle of 8.0°). In addition, the firmness, transparency, and self-cleaning function of the coating can be effectively maintained. The coating in this work has solved the inherent problems of functionality, hydrophobicity, and durability in the coating field, and has a wide range of applications including flexible fabrics, road safety field, and building exterior materials.

The superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes based on textile possessed excellent separation efficiency as well as outstanding anti-oil fouling property, while the poor stability caused by nanoparticle (NP) shedding had severely limited the practical application in oily water separation. In this paper, a feasible method of fabricating the robust membranes based on cotton fabric (CF), which was decorated with TiO 2 NP and citric acid (CA) through micro-dissolution method, was reported. Firstly, the CF was slightly dissolved in the NaOH/Urea solution at low temperature, accelerating the destruction of the cellulose macromolecule on the superficial layers of the fabrics. Then, the vacuum filtration process promoted the TiO 2 NP to distribute uniformly on the CF surface. In the subsequent coagulation process, the TiO 2 NP were firmly anchored on the fabric surface because of self-glue effect of micro-dissolved CF. Finally, the esterification reaction between CA and CF was carried out to enhance the hydrophilic property of CF. The prepared membranes were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, the separation performance and stability of membranes were systematically evaluated. The results of SEM indicated that the TiO 2 NP were uniformly anchored on the membrane surface. Especially, the prepared membranes could not only separate traditional oil/water mixture but also treat complicated oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion with excellent separation efficiency. What’s more, the membranes could withstand various harsh condition and exhibit excellent application stability. In terms of separation performance and stability, the CA/TiO 2 decorated cotton fabrics have the potential to be used in the practical oily water separation. Graphical abstract

Most modifications of wool focused on its surface due to the existence of the cuticle scales. For instance, chlorination, oxidation and protease treatments were used to break down or remove the scales. However, these modifications usually severely damaged the internal structure of wool. In this paper, a novel approach based on surface micro-dissolution was employed to modify the surface of wool to minimize the internal damage of wool, and improve the surface-related properties of wool. The micro-dissolution system used NaHSO 3 /urea to dissolve the scale layer of wool. After being micro-dissolved with NaHSO 3 /urea system, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the Allwörden reaction were utilized to characterize the treated wool. Furthermore, felting shrinkage, strength loss and wettability of the treated wool were determined. The results showed that NaHSO 3 /urea system could dissolve the scale layer from outside to inside. The fluorescence microscopic images further indicated that low concentration of NaHSO 3 /urea system can dissolve the surface of wool without the serious damage of internal structure. Moreover, the micro-dissolution system can be controlled to dissolve the scale layer on the surface of wool slightly by adjusting the reaction conditions. The presented method is simple, easy to operate, and economical, thereby can open up new directions for the surface modification of wool.
