To improve the flame-retardant performance of cotton fabric, multiple crosslinked layers were constructed on cotton fiber surfaces through polymerization of m -phenylenediamine (MPD)/tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride (THPC) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The resulting morphology, general properties, flame retardancy, and durability were characterized and analyzed. Cotton fabric alternately finished with MPD-TMC and THPC-TMC displayed greater changes in surface morphology than that finished with single crosslinked products. The former material had the highest weight gain percentage and so possessed significantly higher limiting oxygen index (LOI) value and weaker heat release, accompanied by formation of a more robust carbonaceous layer during micro combustion calorimetry. After alternating finishing with MPD-TMC and THPC-TMC, the cotton fabric exhibited increased flexural rigidity and decreased air permeability, with the change influenced by the number of finishing cycles. Increased finishing cycles also resulted in an increased LOI, up to 33.5% after five cycles. According to micro combustion calorimetry results, heat release was suppressed more effectively as long as the number of finishing cycles reached three, such that finishing with 3 cycles was optimal in this study. Moreover, a fabric with 3 cycles of alternating finishing almost kept its LOI value after washing in disturbed water for 24 h, exhibiting good durability for flame retardancy, which would be beneficial in real applications. To meet the requirement of miniaturization and integration of the micro thrusters based on the chemical fuels, high-energy density compound is an emerging material as the chemical fuel. However, it is still challenging to realize the high-efficiency, stable and self-sustaining microcombustion of the high-energy density chemical fuels. Herein, we report the high-performance microcombustion of CWs/AP/CL-20 composite with nanoscale 2,4,6,8,10,12-(hexanitrohexaaza)cyclododecane (CL-20) and oxidizer ammonium perchlorate (AP) confined in a self-standing carbonized butterfly wing scales (CWs) matrix. CWs with multi-channeled hierarchical porous structure provide a model architecture for loading of AP and CL-20. CL-20 is designed to serve as heat/pressure loss compensate agent due to its high-energy density, fast energy release rate and large amounts of gas release during combustion process. The combustion of CWs/AP/CL-20 is greatly enhanced due to the enhanced heat and mass transfer originating from the multi-channeled hierarchical porous structure and synergistic reactions between components at nanoscales, which is demonstrated as promising solid-propellant for the micro thruster. It is found that the sample with oxygen balance close to zero, which can be conveniently regulated by adjusting the mass ratio of CL-20 and AP, has the best microcombustion performance, resulting in a specific impulse of 383.5 N·s/kg.

The synthesis and application of the bio-derived flame retardant can meet the current requirements for the high-efficient and sustainable development of flame retardants. Therefore, using phytic acid (PA), 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), and piperazine as raw materials, a PA-derived flame retardant (PAPDOPO) was prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction techniques were applied to characterize the structure of the PAPDOPO. In the prepared flame-retardant epoxy resin (FEP), PAPDOPO showed high flame retardancy. When 4% PAPDOPO was added into epoxy resin (EP), the prepared FEP (EP-PAPD-4) passed the V-0 level in the UL-94 test, and the limited oxygen index value of EP-PAPD-4 reached 35.3%. Microcombustion calorimetry test was also applied to demonstrate the performance of PAPDOPO. The peak heat release rate of EP-PAPD-4 was reduced by 30.4% compared with that of the pure EP. Due to the low addition amount of PAPDOPO in FEP, the mechanical properties of the FEP using PAPDOPO as flame retardant were hardly decreased compared with pure EP.

Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) was reacted with piperazine to obtain poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-piperazine) particle (PCPS), which was used as the flame retardant for epoxy resin (EP). The structure of PCPS was determined by various methods. When PCPS was used alone and the addition amount of PCPS in the prepared flame-retardant EP (FR-EP) reached 4%, the obtained FR-EP cannot even pass the V-1 level in the Vertical burning (UL-94) test. However, PCPS showed a synergistic flame retardancy with aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP). When the mixture of ADP and PCPS in EP was 4% and the weight ratio of ADP and PCPS was 3:1, the prepared FR-EP, EP-ADP/PCPS3:1, reached the V-0 level in the UL-94 test. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of EP-ADP/PCPS3:1 was 29.7%. Compared with pure EP, the peak heat release rate of EP-ADP/PCPS3:1 obtained by the micro-combustion calorimetry (MCC) test was reduced by 20.6%. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) result showed that, with the addition of ADP and PCPS, the char residual of EP-ADP/PCPS3:1 increased about 5.1% compared with EP. The combination of ADP and PCPS showed significant advantage in promoting the flame retardancy of EP. Compared with pure EP, the mechanical properties of EP-ADP/PCPS3:1 was hardly decreased with the addition of ADP and PCPS.

Inspired by the hierarchical microstructure of nacre, via the surface modification of polydopamine (PDA), nacre-mimicking composite films containing graphene oxide (GO) and different mass ratio (5, 15, 25, 35 wt%) of copper nanowires (CuNWs) were prepared with a solvent-induced assembly strategy. The introduction of PDA not only reduced GO, but also protected the CuNWs from oxidation. 1D CuNWs, as a thermal bridge, was introduced into 2D GO nanosheets to construct an interconnected thermal conduction network. This structure can provide an effective thermal conductive pathway. The CuNWs/GO-PDA film containing 25 wt% CuNWs (25CuNWs/GO-PDA) exhibits excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 6.841 W/mK and cross-plane thermal conductivity of 0.202 W/mK. A high anisotropy index of about 34 for 25CuNWs/GO-PDA film was obtained. Due to the char forming ability of PDA, and unique nanosheets structure of GO, films exhibit excellent flame retardancy. Micro combustion calorimeter tests confirm dramatically reduced 80.9% of peak heat release rate compared with pristine GO. More importantly, electrical conductivity of composites improved with the increase of CuNWs loading. With the addition of 35 wt% CuNWs, the electrical conductivity reaches 6.43 × 10 6 S/m. This type of bioinspired film with multifunctional properties is expected to be used as a promising candidate for electronic materials.
