Achieving optimal micro-explosions in stable emulsions by adding water-soluble polymers

Cao Liu,Lingrui Cui,Jun Xu,Lian Cen,Jinshan Xu,Peixun Li,Tiancun Xiao,Fahai Cao

The emulsified feedstock technique is to improve the performance of products by using the micro-explosion phenomenon of emulsion. However, an obstacle to some applications of this technology is the contradiction between emulsion stability and micro-explosion intensity. For the first time, adding water-soluble polymers was proposed to solve this problem. Two polymers of xanthan gum (XG) and nonionic polyacrylamide (NPAM) were investigated and the results show that micro-explosions have five forms. As one of these five forms, the intensity of optimal micro-explosion is three orders of magnitude higher than other forms, and adding 0.5 g/dL XG increases the probability of optimal micro-explosion from 0 to 60% due to the low surface activity, strong thickening and pseudoplasticity of XG solutions. By contrast, NPAM does not promote micro-explosion because of its strong surface activity. Finally, a new mechanism for micro-explosions related to liquid–gas interfacial tension, liquid–liquid interfacial tension and viscosity is proposed.

Improve energy release of boron by tunable metal-organic frameworks via synergetic micro-explosion and catalysis

Kang Xue,Huaiyu Li,Lun Pan,Chongjun Li,Minhua Ai,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

Boron is considered as one of the most promising high energy additives to improve the energy density of aerospace propellants and energetic materials. However, the low energy release properties restrict its practical applications. Herein, three kinds of boron-based composite energetic particles (nB@MOF) were prepared by encapsulating nano boron (nB) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by a self-assembly method with Zn, Co and Mo as metal nodes, and 2-methylimidazole and ethylenediamine as organic ligands. The characterization and dynamics results show that the combustion of organic ligands can induce micro-explosion to destroy the surface oxidation layer of agglomeration and promote the oxidation efficiency of boron. Furthermore, the metal oxide catalyst generated in-situ on nB surface by metal nodes can reduce the initial oxidation temperature and improve the mass transfer distance and interface contact of the oxidation reaction. Compared with nB, the maximum pressurization rate of nB@MOF with 2-methylimidazole as the organic ligand is increased by 31.1 times, the initial oxidation temperature of nB@MOF with Mo as the metal node is reduced by 185.9°C, and the combustion heat of all nB@MOF are increased by more than 1.2 times. This work demonstrates that the energy release properties of boron can be effectively improved by synergistic effect of micro-explosion process and interfacial catalysis.

Thermal shock triggers microexplosion combustion in graded fuel and oxidizer encapsulation microspheres with improved combustion efficiency

Hong-Yu Zhang,Zhe Shi,Ya-Yu Dong,Xu-Wen Wang,Kai-Feng Lin,De-Bin Xia,Jian Zhang,Yu-Lin Yang

The combustion agglomeration of aluminum (Al) and the long heat and mass transfer distance between Al and oxidizer cause serious two-phase flow loss and slag accumulation in the engine of solid propellants. Here, we present an effective strategy by in-situ encapsulating graded nano-aluminum (nAl) and micron-aluminum (μAl) in ammonium perchlorate (AP) simultaneously by using hydroxymethyl cellulose (HMC) as adhesive and constructing a compact coupling fuel oxidizer complex high-energy microsphere (μAl/nAl@AP/HMC) to enhance the energy release efficiency and combustion efficiency. Compared with physical mixture (PM), the ignition delay time and combustion time of μAl/nAl@AP/HMC microspheres are reduced by 69.58 % and 69.87 %, owing to the decomposition process control of AP through the adsorption and spatial constraint effect on the interface between metal fuels and oxidizer. Furthermore, the nAl embedded in the AP surface forms a hot spot around the μAl to promote the combustion reaction, thereby shortening the cavitation threshold and tensile limit time of μAl and accelerating the occurrence of microexplosion. Microexplosion effect in μAl/nAl@AP/HMC microsphere significantly weakens combustion agglomeration and improves combustion efficiency and energy release efficiency by sharp shrinkage of combustion condensation products, which addresses the challenges on energy output and combustion efficiency in high-density solid propellants.

Effect of oxygen concentration on thermal oxidation and combustion characteristics of single aluminum particles

Xueqin Liao,Peihui Xu,Mengxia Sun,Fan Zhang,Jianzhong Liu

Aluminum (Al) particles are widely used in propellants, thermite and explosives. However, its energy release process is still not thoroughly investigated. In this paper, the reaction properties of Al particles at low and high heating rates were investigated using a thermal analysis system and a single-particle combustion system, respectively. At a low heating rate (10°C/min), when the temperature is raised to 1200°C, the oxidation efficiency of Al (which can also be regarded as the average oxidation rate) increases first and then decreases as the oxygen concentration increases. In addition, XRD results of intermediate oxidation products under air show that the oxidation of Al particles deepens with increasing temperature. The SEM results reveal that broken particles and large-size aggregates gradually appear in the sample as the temperature increases, and the surface of the Al particles becomes rougher. At high heating rate (combustion), with the increase of oxygen concentration, the probability of microexplosion of Al particles increases from 19.77 % under air to 82.67 % under 100 % O 2 . Furthermore, the combustion time gradually decreases with the increase of oxygen concentration, while the average mass burning rate gradually increases from 1.65 g/ms under air to 2.73 g/ms under 100 % O 2 . Based on the analysis of the surface structure of the intermediate oxidation products and the microexplosion of single particles, it is believed that the difference of the reaction law of Al particles at different heating rates may be related to the structural evolution behavior of the oxide film. This study provides basic data support for understanding the heat release behavior of Al particles.

Evaporation and Autoignition Characteristics of JP-10 Droplets with Hyperbranched Polyester as Additive

Derui Jin,Ji Mi,Yongsheng Guo,Yitong Dai,Wenjun Fang

It was found in our previous work that hyperbranched polyester (HPE) can generate radicals and accelerate the chemical reactions of hydrocarbon fuels used as initiators. In this work, the evaporation and autoignition characteristics of JP-10 droplets with or without HPE were investigated using the high-speed backlight imaging technique in detail. The results indicate that the puffing and micro-explosion phenomena of HPE-blended JP-10 droplets can accelerate fuel evaporation and autoignition. When a 0.1% mass concentration of HPE was used, the droplet lifetime was reduced by 16.5% in evaporation at 850 K and 18.0% in autoignition at 900 K. A mechanism of HPE that promotes puffing and micro-explosions was proposed by analyzing droplet images of combustion and SEM images of combustion residues. Overall, this study provides a method for improving the evaporation and autoignition performance of JP-10.

Structure engineering of mesoporous MXenes through a general microexplosion assisted exfoliation strategy

Xiaolong Lu,Zhiwei Xu,Yi Shi,Qi Wang,Jialu Jia,Nan Sun,Bijun Fang,Ningyi Yuan,Jianning Ding

Structure engineering gives rise to tremendous opportunities for creating materials with marvelous morphologies and properties. Limited by the unique etching preparation method and vulnerable resistance to oxidation , structure engineering of MXenes, especially, mesoporous morphology construction, remains an obstacle. Here, we put forward a facile strategy to fabricate mesoporous MXene nanosheets by microexplosion process assisted uneven sheets exfoliation and quantum dots detaching, with left structure voids acting as mesopores. The universality of proposed strategy for different MXenes, including Ti 3 C 2 , Nb 2 C and Ti 2 C, was also testified. As a concept of proof, the distinct mesostructures provide abundant active sites and improve ion diffusion kinetics, thus boosting the energy storage performance of Ti 3 C 2 MXenes. This work not only sheds new light to the fabrication of mesoporous MXenes, but also demonstrates performance optimization through structure engineering.

Micro-explosion-induced combustion and agglomeration characteristics in composite propellants with fluorinated graphene

Huanhuan Gao,Hui Liu,Peihui Xu,Jianzhong Liu

The potential of the Al-F reaction in suppressing agglomeration during propellant combustion and enhancing combustion performance is investigated by introducing fluorinated graphene as a fluorinated oxidizer. Comparative analyses of ignition combustion and agglomeration behaviors are conducted on novel composite powders and propellant samples modified with varying contents of fluorinated graphene using laser and hot wire ignition visualization systems. Characterizing parameters such as characteristic spectra, flame grayscale, ignition delay time, combustion duration, and burning rate are measured during combustion at different pressures. Additionally, agglomerated particles are collected via quenching techniques under 7 MPa pressure to explore the influence mechanism of fluorinated graphene on agglomeration near the burning surface, and a comprehensive influence mechanism is proposed. Results indicate that fluorinated graphene promotes ammonium perchlorate decomposition, accelerates oxidizing gas release, and enhances thermal conduction at the burning surface. The reaction between Al and F decreases the formation of intermediates (AlO and Al 2 O), while the interaction of F with Al and Al 2 O 3 effectively inhibits the clustering of Al particles, replacing conventional oxidation reactions and resulting in a unique micro-explosion jetting phenomenon. The introduction of 15 % fluorinated graphene concentrates most product particles around 10 μm, enhancing energy release during combustion. Overall, this composite powder containing fluorinated graphene effectively improves the combustion performance of aluminum-containing composite propellants, inhibiting Al particle agglomeration and potentially reducing specific impulse loss in solid rocket motors.

Preparation and combustion behavior of stabilized Al-Li compound fuel via mixing with ammonium perchlorate and metal oxides

Jiahe Li,Changsheng Tang,Luyang Wang,Yulin Yang,Debin Xia,Jian Zhang,Ping Wang,Kaifeng Lin

The new composite fuel (Al-Li@TH@AP@Oxide) is a better strategy to improve the combustion effect of propellant through the structural design. This study focuses on the micro-explosion effect of Al-based alloy fuel, the improvement of surface oxygen concentration and the reduction of the distance between metal oxide and reducing agent. The stabilized Al-Li had good compatibility of 1 level with HTPB and curing property through the passivation of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloride (TH). Besides, the ammonium perchlorate (AP) and oxide could be attached to Al-Li@TH surface through evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method. The Al-Li@ [email protected] had the AP coating layer of 53.26 nm and good flammability with the reaction of oxidant and reducing agent. Moreover, the samples of Al-Li@ [email protected] @Oxide had better flammability with shorter ignition delay time, greater burning intensity and obvious micro-explosion phenomenon. The high temperature decomposition exothermic peak of AP could also be reduced to 344.8℃ of Al-Li@ [email protected] @CuO from 413℃ of Al-Li@ [email protected] . The doping of CuO presented the minimum ignition delay time of 0.6594 s, the highest burning temperature of 1343.28℃ and the fastest burning rate of 1.5297 mm s −1 through the comparison of Mn 2 O 3 , NiO and CuO propellants. In addition, the better combustion effect and structural advantage could also be proved through the size and composition of residue for the propellants of Al-Li@ [email protected] @CuO than Al-Li@TH/AP/CuO. The appearance of Al 2 O 3 and metal proved the occurrence of thermite reaction during propellant combustion. The feasible fabrication method would provide an innovative idea for further development of solid propellants with high combustion performance.

Influence of micron-sized aluminum particles on micro-explosion and combustion characteristics of ethanol-biodiesel droplets under co-heat flow

Zhicong Qiu,Junjian Tian,Yu Liu,Hao sun,Zhanshi Ni,Qizhao Lin,Liqun He

As a high-energy metal fuel , aluminum powder particles (AP) have long been used as fuel propellants and combustion-supporting additives in explosives to meet the design requirements of a new generation of high-energy–density fuels. In this experiment, the micro-explosion and combustion characteristics of ethanol-biodiesel mixed droplets with different aluminum powder particle contents and particle sizes were studied under high temperature and pure oxygen environment. In order to better control the experimental variables, a more accurate single-droplet suspension method was adopted in this experiment. The entire evaporation and combustion process of the mixed fuel was completely recorded and analyzed by using high-speed photography technology , binarization imaging technology and droplet optimization algorithms. The experimental results show that when the content of aluminum powder particles remains unchanged, increasing the particle size of aluminum powder in the mixed droplets will promote the micro-explosion phenomenon. When the particle size of the aluminum powder contained in the mixed fuel is different, the increase of the particle content will have a completely different effect on the heating time of the droplet. When the particle size of aluminum powder particles is small, the combustion duration of the mixed droplets increases with the increase of aluminum powder content, while the opposite results are shown when the aluminum powder particles are larger. Increasing the amount of aluminum powder also extends the full life of the droplets. In addition, this study introduces the microburst intensity (MI), which provides a new idea and method for laterally comparing the microburst phenomena of fuel droplets with different initial diameters. For mixed fuel containing micron-sized aluminum particles, the particle content that produces the best micro-explosion intensity is about 20%.

Combustion and microexplosion characteristics in droplets of kerosene with boron nanoparticles and 1-pentanol

Sinan Feng,Zhe Zhu,Hefeng Lin,Liyan Chen,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

Boron-based nanofluid fuel demonstrates a high energy density due to the presence of B nanoparticles (BNPs). This paper presents a comprehensive study of nanofluid fuels composed of kerosene, 1-pentanol, and BNPs through both theoretical analysis and experimental investigation. The 1-pentanol not only possesses a high heat value and physical properties, such as density and viscosity, that are comparable to those of kerosene, but it also serves as an effective dispersing medium for BNPs. Furthermore, test results examining the impact of 1-pentanol content on the stability of BNPs show that a concentration of 10 vol% 1-pentanol significantly inhibits the contact and aggregation of BNPs and makes them stably dispersed in fuel. Single droplet combustion experiments demonstrate that the 10B/K90P10 sample exhibits the best all-around combustion characteristics with an ignition delay time of 35 ms and a liquid phase combustion rate of 1.5537 mm 2 /s. Finally, a mathematical model has been developed to analyze and validate the combustion performance of boron-based alcohol-containing nanofluid fuels. The predicted ignition delay time, liquid phase combustion rate, and microexplosion time are within acceptable limits of their experimental values. This work provides valuable insights for the research and application of boron-based alcohol-containing nanofluid fuels.

Maillard Reaction Inspired Microexplosion toward Fast Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Tin Oxides for Efficient Chemiresistive Gas Sensing

Fengluan Jiang,Wenhe Xie,Yu Deng,Keyu Chen,Jichun Li,Xin-Yu Huang,Hongxiu Yu,Yaobang Li,Limin Wu,Yonghui Deng

Two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous transition metal oxides are highly desired in various applications, but their fast and low-cost synthesis remains a great challenge. Herein, a Maillard reaction inspired microexplosion approach is applied to rapidly synthesize ultrathin 2D mesoporous tin oxide (mSnO2). During the microexplosion between granular ammonia nitrate with melanoidin at high temperature, the organic species can be carbonized and expanded rapidly due to the instantaneous release of gases, thus producing ultrathin carbonaceous templates with rich functional groups to effectively anchor SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface. The subsequent removal of carbonaceous templates via calcination in air results in the formation of 2D mSnO2 due to the confinement effect of the templates. Pd nanoparticles are controllably deposited on the surface of 2D mSnO2 via in situ reduction, forming ultrathin 2D Pd/mSnO2 nanocomposites with thicknesses of 6–8 nm. Owing to the unique 2D mesoporous structure with rich oxygen defects and highly exposed metal–metal oxide interfaces, 2D Pd/mSnO2 exhibits excellent sensing performance toward acetone with high sensitivity, a short response time, and good selectivity under low working temperature (100 °C). This fast and convenient microexplosion synthesis strategy opens up the possibility of constructing 2D porous functional materials for various applications including high-performance gas sensors.

Experimental study on the evaporation and combustion characteristics of double Al/n-heptane based nanofluid fuel droplets in high temperature environment

Baozhong Zhu,Weiqi Chen,Yunlan Sun,Peng Guo,Jianzhong Liu

Nanofluid fuels can be used in scramjet . However, the interactions among fuel droplets in spray and combustion process are still a gray area. The study on the evaporation and combustion of the double droplets can better demonstrate the role of nanofluid droplets. In this paper, the evaporation and combustion characteristics of the double droplets of aluminum/n-heptane based nanofluid fuels were investigated by a droplet-suspension method, whose results were compared to those of the single droplet at 973 K and 0.1 MPa. The effect of the distance of the double droplets on their evaporation behavior, ignition delay time, combustion phenomena, and micro-explosion time were studied. The influence of thermocouple wire was also analyzed. The double droplets have a synergistic effect on the evaporation behavior, ignition delay time, and micro-explosion. The ignition delay time of double droplets of the aluminum/n-heptane based nanofluid fuel droplet has debased 25.3% compared with that of the single droplet, while the maximum micro-explosion duration has increased 7.2%. With the increase of the distance of both droplets, the synergistic effect is first strengthened and then weakened.
