Surface passivation caused by Fe-Cr precipitates limits the application of milli-sized zero-valent iron (mFe 0 ) in filter tanks for Cr(VI) removal. A mFe 0 -based column was established using sand as dispersing media, coupled with a micro-electric field (MEF, 1.2 mA/cm 2 ), to accelerate iron corrosion and enhance Cr(VI) sequestration. A control column without MEF was employed for comparison. Surface analysis verified that the MEF induced mFe 0 particles into three-electrodes with bipolar charges and facilitated electron transfer from iron-core to surrounding O 2 /H 2 O. Ferrous ions from iron corrosion afterwards reduced Cr(VI) and precipitated into secondary minerals (e.g., magnetite, lepidocrocite, and green rust). These minerals effectively sequestered Cr(VI) in their matrices through adsorption-reduction/precipitation on Fe 0 and sand surfaces. Compared to the mFe 0 column, the MEF-mediated mFe 0 (MEF-mFe 0 ) column demonstrated a 2.5-fold increase in kinetic rate constant and a 10-fold decrease in Cr(VI) migration rate, leading to a 9.5-fold augment in Cr(VI) sequestration capacity and a 3.7-fold extension in longevity. Under different hydraulic retention times and influent concentrations, the MEF-mFe 0 column outperformed the mFe 0 column with 6.0 to 9.6-fold higher Cr(VI) sequestration and 3.5 to 5.7-fold longer lifespan. Our study revealed that MEF-assistance represented a promising approach to enhance mFe 0 activation for subsequent Cr(VI) sequestration from water.

Zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) is restricted in phosphate removal due to the formation of a passive P–Fe layer on its surface. A micro-electric field (0.20 mA cm −2 ) was employed in Fe 0 column to facilitate iron corrosion for enhanced phosphate removal with a Fe 0 column as the control. The performance of two columns was compared by batch experiment at a Fe 0 filling rate of 10 vol% with quartz sand as dispersing media. The stability and reusability of micro-electric field driven Fe 0 (MFD-Fe 0 ) column was estimated by cyclic test. Solid phase analysis showed promoted iron corrosion, iron ion generation, and secondary mineral production such as lepidocrocite and magnetite in the MFD-Fe 0 column. Since iron ions tended to precipitate with phosphate, and iron minerals provided reaction sites for phosphate adsorption, the MFD-Fe 0 column achieved an enhanced phosphate removal of 94.1%, 2.8 times higher than that of the Fe 0 column. The increase of current density from 0 to 0.20 mA cm −2 significantly improved phosphate removal from 24.5% to 94.1%, further demonstrating the promoting effect of micro-electric field on iron corrosion. The MFD-Fe 0 column also possessed excellent stability and reusability. It only showed a slight decrease of phosphate removal from 94.1% to 89.7% in eight cycles. It restored a phosphate removal capacity of 97.4% as compared to the initial MFD-Fe 0 column by eluting iron (hydro)oxides on Fe 0 and quartz sand surfaces with sulfuric acid . This study indicated that MFD-Fe 0 is a promising method to remove phosphate from water and an alternative strategy for overcoming Fe 0 passivation.

To enhance the efficiency of decentralized rural drinking water treatment, this study investigates the application of a weak micro-electric field with granular electrodes in biological slow filtration (BSF) systems, with a focus on the influence of anode position and microbial responses. Four reactor configurations were evaluated over 78 days: a non-electrified control (BSF-0), a surface-anode system (BSF-S), a mid-layer anode system (BSF-M), and a short-filter system with surface anode (BSF-SS). The bio-electrochemical system with electric field of 0.67 V/cm (BSF-S) demonstrated superior and more balanced contaminant removal performance compared to both non-electrified and stronger electric field (1.0 V/cm, the other two BSFs) systems. Specifically, BSF-S achieved the optimum performance, with turbidity, COD, and NH 3 -N removal rates of 98.06 ± 2.08 %, 70.16 ± 9.76 %, and 84.53 ± 12.40 %, respectively, during stable operation, representing notable enhancements over BSF-0. Microbial analysis revealed that the surface anode promoted the formation of an electroactive biofilm with high extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content and microbial diversity (685 unique OTUs), and established a distinct functional zonation, enriching nitrifying Nitrospirota (10.74 %) in the bottom layer and anaerobic degraders like Fimbriimonadaceae (11.47 %) in the middle. In contrast, the mid-layer anode led to microbial heterogeneity and selected for specialized electroactive taxa (e.g., Cupriavidus at 21.11 %) capable of heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic denitrification, but with lower overall diversity, while the short-filter system suffered from inhibited nitrification due to insufficient hydraulic retention. The results demonstrate that optimizing the synergy between a weak electric field and filter bed architecture is crucial for fostering a stable, stratified, and functionally diverse microbial ecosystem, which significantly enhances pollutant removal and system stability, providing a promising strategy for upgrading rural drinking water purification.

A dual-charged composite membrane was engineered for efficient separation of both cationic and anionic molecules. Alternately charged functional layer with sandwich structure was assembled onto porous membrane via chemical-mediated polyphenol surface engineering. The surface morphology , element variation and surface charge properties of the functional layer were respectively analysed using SEM, FTIR and streaming zeta potential measurements. The as-prepared “sandwich”-type composite membrane showed preferable rejection to multiple charged dyes (99.6% Alcian blue, 99.3% Brilliant blue, 92.21% Methyl blue, 89.91% Rhodanile blue). Both Donnan repulsion by dual-charged functional layer and entrapment effect by micro electric fields contributed to the outstanding separation performance. Compared with generally needed high pressure of 4–8 bar for the current nanofiltration separation, the developed composite membrane achieved desirable rejection under a low operating pressure of 1.5 bar, as well as favorable recycling performance for long-term use. This study provides an energy-efficient membrane candidate for comprehensive separation of charged molecules in practical applications such as dye wastewater treatment .

The tumor diffusion and cell internalization are the major obstacles to improving delivery efficacy of therapeutic agents. External electric fields have shown strong effect on the cell membrane polarization and fluidity, but usually need complicated power management circuits. Herein, in situ generation of microelectric field on nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed to overcome these delivery barriers. Janus [email protected] NPs were developed through partially coating of polydopamine (PDA) caps on pyroelectric tetragonal BaTiO 3 (tBT) NPs and then camptothecin (CPT) conjugation via disulfide linkages. For comparison, [email protected] NPs were prepared from non-pyroelectric cubic BaTiO 3 (cBT) as control. Near-infrared (NIR) illumination on PDA caps of the Janus NPs produces asymmetric thermophoretic force to drive NP motion for tumor accumulation, deep tissue penetration and effective cell interaction. Photothermally created temperature variations on tBT NPs build pyroelectric potentials to selectively change the membrane potential of tumor cells other than normal cells and exhibit a dominated role in enhancing tumor cell internalization and cytotoxicity. The combination index analysis confirms the synergistic effect of pyroelectric dynamic therapy (PEDT), chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT), leading to full inhibition of tumor growth and noticeable extension of animal survival at significant lower CPT doses. The mild PTT/PEDT, the reduced CPT dose and the selective toxicity to tumor cells have achieved favorable treatment safety after [email protected] /NIR treatment. Therefore, in response to the differences in membrane potentials and glutathione levels between tumor and normal cells, we have demonstrated a concise design to achieve thermophoresis-driven motion, pyroelectric potential-enhanced cell internalization and PTT/PEDT/chemotherapy-synergized antitumor treatment.
