The requirement for rechargeable microbatteries (MBs) continues to increase due to the rapidly development of wearable and integrated electronics. However, the ever-reported mainstream MBs, such as lithium ion MBs, have intrinsic drawbacks of security threats and environmental hazards, and are not suitable as an energy supply component for wearable electronics. Here, a safe and environmentally friendly zinc ion microbattery (ZIMB) based on MXene-TiS 2 (de)intercalation anode, multi-walled carbon nanotubes-vanadium dioxide (B) (MWCNTs-VO 2 (B)) cathode, zinc sulfate-polyacrylamide (ZnSO 4 -PAM) hydrogel electrolyte and self-healable polyurethane (PU) protective shell is exploited. The ZIMB exhibit satisfactory electrochemical performance with a capacity of 40.8 μAh cm -2 , maximum power density of 32.5 μWh cm -2 and maximum energy density of 1.2 mW cm -2 . In addition, the ZIMB also exhibits the excellent flexibility, thermostability and self-healability, i.e. , no significant attenuation in capacity can be observed when the ZIMB is placed on the specific conditions, such as the high bending angle of 150°, high temperature of 100 °C, and multiple damage and repair cycles. This study provides a feasible strategy to develop advanced high reliable and stable micro energy storage devices for wearable and integrated electronics.

Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is a promising wastewater treatment technology, which cannot only purify wastewater but also generate electricity using solar energy. In this study, a membrane-less visible-light responsive micro PFC was developed, where the CdS/ZnS-TiO 2 deposited on a conductive glass as a photoanode and CuO deposited on the porous carbon paper as an air-breathing photocathode were laterally arranged. Such design allows for both the photoanode and photocathode to be irradiated simultaneously from one side and enhances photon and mass transport. It was found that the developed micro PFC with dual photoelectrodes well responded to light illumination and exhibited good long-term performance. Experimental results also showed that upgrading the light intensity and methanol and electrolyte concentrations could improve the discharging performance because of larger amount of generated electron-hole pairs and more hole scavengers resulting from the enhanced transport. Besides, it was also found that although the increase of the liquid flow rate from extremely low rate to a moderate one caused the residence time to be lowered, positive contribution resulting from enhanced mass transport was more significant, leading to the improved performance. However, too high liquid flow rate resulted in critical low residence time, which made the discharging performance worse. The feasibility of the developed micro PFC with dual photoelectrodes toward the applications of using solar energy to remove organic pollutants contained in wastewater and simultaneously generate electricity is demonstrated in this work.

Wireless-charging in-plane microbatteries (MBs) with conformal shape and high-capacity hold substantial promise in advancing the practical applications of complexly configured electronic devices. However, integrating these MBs seamlessly with flexible electronic system remains a challenge as it requires a rational structure design and reasonable materials engineering for the micropower system, ensuring both high compatibility and robust mechanical stability. Here, we present stretchable and wireless-charging dual-plating MBs that integrate seamlessly into circuits through an omnidirectional stretch-contraction strategy coupled with mask-assisted printing. The strain-induced folding structures and no active-material design endow the wireless-charging MBs with reliable deformation-tolerant capabilities, which can sustain ~200% omnidirectional strains and have advantages of an order of magnitude in terms of power and energy densities, compared to the existing in-plane MBs. With the exceptional compatible and elastic properties, a wirelessly charging stretchable display integrated circuit and even intelligent electronic skin are achieved, capable of mimicking human touch to sense the weight, temperature, and shape of objects.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries with superior operational safety have great promise to serve as wearable energy storage devices. However, the poor cycling stability and low output voltage limited their practical applications. Here, fully printable Zn/MoS 2 -MnO 2 micro-batteries are developed and demonstrated significantly enhanced cycling stability with sweat activation. 2D MoS 2 is utilized to enable lattice-matching with Zn powders to realize printed Zn anodes with desirable stability and promote electron/ion transfer. Interestingly, the mild acid epidermal sweat also contributed to eliminating the MnO 2 cathode by-products and compensating for the hydrogel electrolytes' water loss. The Zn/MoS 2 -MnO 2 micro-batteries achieve a high specific capacity of 318.9 µAh cm −2 at the current density of 0.16 mA cm −2 , and an energy density of 424.6 µWh cm −2 , with remarkable cycle stability of ≈90% after 250 cycles. In-battery electrochromic display of capacity level and feasible electronics charging are demonstrated. The as-printed micro-batteries with innovative sweat activation would inspire the advances of sustainable power supply for wearables.

Printed zinc ion micro-batteries (PZIMBs) possess characteristics such as miniaturization, customizability, and affordability, making them highly promising for the field of flexible electronic devices. Nevertheless, the current development of PZIMBs is seriously hindered by their limited areal capacity. In this study, PZIMBs with a high areal capacity are conducted based on 3D printing technology by optimizing the material properties, electrode ink formulation, and printing parameters. The cathode material, polyvinylpyrrolidone-induced ammonium vanadate (P-NVO) nanobelt, exhibits a high capacity of 457.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1 mA g −1 , along with good cycling performance and rate capability. The double-network hydrogel electrolyte, composed of crosslinked polyacrylamide-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAM-PVP hydrogel electrolyte), demonstrates excellent ionic conductivity (107.22 mS cm −1 ), high stretchability (970%), and viscosity. The constructed PZIMBs exhibit a high areal capacity of 4.02 mAh cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 , along with good mechanical flexibility. Moreover, through the integration of PZIMBs with pressure sensors, an interactive system is developed that resembles electronic skin, and this integration enables practical applications of wearable devices. This study presents a novel approach for fabricating PZIMBs with high areal capacity, thereby contributing to and propelling the advancement of flexible energy storage.

Explosive progress in wireless and functional mobile electronics calls for miniaturized energy-storage units to push forward energy-autonomous and self-sustainable intelligent microsystems. Emerging three-dimensional (3D) microstructured electrodes for energy-storage devices have drawn great attention due to their attractive stereoscopic architectures to increase the areal loading of active materials. Here, we report a strategy for fabricating a 3D helical electrode for a zinc microbattery (Zn MB) by combining a “top-down” lithography technique and a “bottom-up” electrochemical depositing process. Thanks to the available stereoscopic space, the achieved 3D helical electrode shows a high surface area, outstanding electrolyte permeation, and stress adaptive capability. Based on the structural advantages of a 3D helical electrode, high-performance rechargeable Zn MB has been achieved by depositing Zn and NiOOH as anode and cathode materials, respectively. The Zn microbattery demonstrates a specific areal capacity up to 0.325 mAh·cm–2 corresponding to a high energy density of 0.55 mWh·cm–2. It also exhibits remarkable rate capability (0.272 mAh·cm–2 at 100 mA·cm–2) and excellent cycling stability (85% retention after 1000 cycles). The outstanding electrochemical performance indicates that the 3D Zn MB can work as a promising power source for advanced electronic devices. Paired micro-/nanofabrication process for battery electrodes is also of great significance in gearing toward carbon-neutral.

Lightweight, compact, integrated, and miniaturized energy devices are under high pursuit for portable and wearable electronics. However, improving the energy density per area still remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of a solid-state zinc-air microbattery (ZAmB) by a facile 3D direct printing technique. The interdigital electrodes, gel electrolyte, and encapsulation frame are all printed with a customized design by optimzing the composition of the printing inks to obtain the best battery performance. Multiple layers of interdigital electrodes are sequentially printed with a fine overlap to achieve an ultrahigh thickness of 2.5 mm for a remarkably increased specific areal energy of up to 77.2 mWh cm–2. To meet the practical powering requirements for different output voltages and currents, battery modules consisting of individual ZAmBs connected in series or parallel or a combination of the two are printed with a facile integration to external loads. Powering of LEDs, digital watch, and a miniature rotary motor and even charging of a smartphone by the printed ZAmB modules are successfully demonstrated. The versatile 3D direct printing technique enables the fabricated ZAmBs with an adjustable form factor and integration capability with other electronics, paving the way for exploring new energy systems with diverse structures and extended functionalities.

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon materials are often used as carriers for anchoring iodine in zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs). However, the physical stacking of carbon materials during the electrode assembly process, the weaker physical interactions between non-polar carbon materials and iodine species, and the scarcity of catalytic sites for iodine conversion led to a reduced catalytic activity for the iodine redox reaction, which fails to completely inhibit the shuttling of iodine species. Here, 3D ultrafine Cu-anchored CNT-rGO carriers (3D Cu@CNT-rGO) with interconnected structures are prepared using a simple laser-induced reduction strategy. The 3D microporous structure and excellent electrical conductivity of 3D Cu@CNT-rGO make it an ideal host for iodine. Ultrafine Cu nanoparticles introduce as catalysts accelerate the redox kinetics, efficiently catalyze iodine/polyiodide conversion, inhibit polyiodide shuttling, and enhance the electrochemical performance of ZIBs. The fabricated zinc-iodide micro-batteries (ZIMBs) delivers a high specific area capacity of 1.29 mAh cm −2 , a high area energy density (1.55 mWh cm −2 ) and a high area power density (33.58 mW cm −2 ) as well as excellent cyclin stability (80% capacity retention after 4000 cycles). Meanwhile, ZIMBs have excellent mechanical flexibility and have great potential for application in the field of integrated, miniaturized and flexible electronic devices.

The rapid development of microelectronic devices has increased the demand for miniature energy storage systems that are highly safe and exhibit long cycling life and excellent energy density. However, the lack of low-cost and high-performance fabrication methods presents a significant challenge to thin-film electrode fabrication. This study reports a strategy combining controllable pre-curing treatment with rapid thermal annealing (RTA), which enables in situ fabrication of high-quality sodium vanadium phosphate [Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 ] thin films. RTA facilitates the cleavage of weak metal–O bonds in the precursor film, whereas optimisation of the pre-curing duration (0–100 s) effectively eliminates organic residues and strengthens the carbon framework, suppressing particle agglomeration. This synergistic control substantially improves crystallization uniformity and film densification, resulting in a refined grain structure and highly oriented crystal facets. Under optimal conditions, the thin film demonstrates a high specific capacity of 85.6 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , retains 72.5 mAh g −1 even at 20 A g −1 , and demonstrates 90.3 % capacity retention after 200 cycles. Moreover, the assembled full sodium-ion cell exhibits an average operating voltage of 1.3 V while maintaining 94.2 % capacity retention after 500 cycles. This study elucidates for the first time the synergistic regulation pathway of the pre-curing–RTA coupling mechanism in Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 thin-film fabrication and proposes an advanced preparation strategy for cost-effective, highly integrated, high-power sodium-ion thin-film devices, providing critical theoretical foundations and robust technical support for next-generation all–solid state sodium microbattery design and development.

Rechargeable zinc-ion micro-batteries (ZIMBs) are promising candidates for powering various microelectronic devices, although they typically exhibit low areal energy of ∼0.1 mWh cm − ². In this study, we reported the design and assembly of zinc micro-batteries through an ink extrusion-based printing approach. In the process, a three-axis printer was adopted, allowing for the fabrication of microelectrodes with large areal loading and diverse morphologies. Vanadium oxide anchored with carbon nanotubes was employed as the cathode material, zinc powder was used as the anode material, and a polyacrylamide gel containing ethylene glycol was selected as the electrolyte. The printed micro-batteries demonstrate an areal capacity of 0.51 mAh cm − ² and an energy density of 0.37 mWh cm − ² at a charge-discharge current of 0.2 mA, outperforming state-of-the-art zinc counterparts. This work provides a simple yet efficient solution to the development of high-energy micro-batteries.

Micro-batteries are promising power sources to drive miniaturized or portable electronic devices due to their higher energy density than micro-supercapacitors. Current micro-batteries still suffer from relatively large footprint and unsatisfactory areal electrochemical performance caused by loose electrode structure. Here, we develop a compact aqueous K-ion micro-battery through the self-shrinking of reduced graphene oxide hydrogel to realize small footprint and high areal capacity at the same time. With a volume of as small as 0.00381 cm −3 , this micro-battery delivers the highest areal capacity (5.1 mAh cm −2 ) and energy density (4.78 mWh cm −2 ) among all reported micro-batteries. Meanwhile, this micro-battery can be prepared into different shapes and attached onto a range of animals (ants, crabs and butterflies, etc.) for wide applications.

On-site screening of copper ions in body fluid plays a critical role in monitoring human health, especially in heavy pollution areas. In this study, we have developed a hybrid 3D printed integrated microdevice for the determination of copper ions in human body fluids. A fixed and low volume of sample was detected by using the integrated microdevice without any preprocessing. The hybrid channel enables sample uniform mixing and quantitative dilution with buffer solution by inducing the “horseshoe vortex” phenomenon. The electrolytic microcell based on the flow detection system shows a more effective copper ion reaction ratio and, as a result, a better sensitivity. The simulation of the finite element method (FEM) determined the relevant optimum parameters of the hybrid channel and the microcell. The design, fabrication, and detection procedure of the integrated microdevice are here illustrated. The microdevice presented superior detection properties towards copper ions. The calibration curves covered two linear ranges varying from 20 to 100 ppb and 100 to 400 ppb, respectively. The limit of detection was estimated to be 15 ppb ( S / N = 3). The relative standard deviation of the peak current measurements was 2.26%. The designed microdevice was further applied to detect copper ions in practical samples (calf serum sample and synthetic human urine sample) using a standard addition method, and the average recovery was found to be 95–104%. The performance of copper ion detection with the integrated microdevice was consistent with that of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in the same practical samples, demonstrating significant practicality in the test of body fluidics. The portable integrated microdevice is an excellent choice for on-site detection and has a promising prospect in the point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. Graphical abstract
