Removal of pigments from molasses wastewater by combining micro-electrolysis with biological treatment method

Chen Ben,Tian Xiaofei,Yu Lian,Wu Zhenqiang

Pigments in molasses wastewater (MWW) effluent, such as melanoidins, were considered as kinds of the most recalcitrant and hazardous colorant contaminants to the environment. In this study, de-coloring the MWW by a synergistic combination of micro-electrolysis with bio-treatment was performed. Aiming to a high de-colorization yield, levels of nutrition source supplies, MWW dilution ratio, and micro-electrolysis reaction time were optimized accordingly. For a diluted (50 %, v/v) MWW, an maximum overall de-colorization yield (97.1 ± 0.5 %, for absorbance at 475 nm) was achieved through the bio-electrolysis treatment. In electrolysis bio-treatment, the positive effect of micro-electrolysis was also revealed by a promoted growth of fungal biomass as well as activities of ligninolytic enzymes. Activities of lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, and laccase were promoted by 111.2, 103.9, and 7.7 %, respectively. This study also implied that the bio-treatment and the micro-electrolysis had different efficiencies on removal of pigments with distinct polarities.

Degradation of thiocyanate by Fe/Cu/C microelectrolysis: Role of pre-magnetization and enhancement mechanism

Min Zhang,Jin Wang,Xinyuan Zhan,Wusong Xu,Maolin He,Ding Ma,Zhengbo Yue

Thiocyanate (SCN − ), a non-volatile inorganic pollutant, is commonly found in various types of industrial wastewater, which is resistant to hydrolysis and has the potential to be toxic to organisms. Premagnetized iron-copper-carbon ternary micro-electrolytic filler (pre-Fe/Cu/C) was prepared to degrade SCN − . Pre-Fe/Cu/C exhibited the most significant enhancement effect on SCN − removal when magnetized for 5 min with an intensity of 100 mT, and the SCN − removal rate was the highest at an initial pH of 3.0 and an aeration rate of 1.6 L/min. The electrochemical corrosion and electron transfer in the pre-Fe/Cu/C system were confirmed through SEM, XPS , FTIR , XRD , and electrochemical tests. This resulted in the formation of more corrosion products and multiple cycles of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Cu 0 /Cu + /Cu 2+ . Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were utilized to illustrate the oxygen adsorption properties of the materials and the participation of reactive oxygen species ( 1 O 2 , ·O 2 − , and ·OH) in SCN − removal. The degradation products of SCN − were identified as SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , NH 4 + , and N 2 . This study introduced the use of permanent magnets for the first time to enhance Fe/Cu/C ternary micro-electrolytic fillers, offering a cost-effective, versatile, and stable approach that effectively effectively enhanced the degradation of SCN − .

Enhanced Fe-C micro-electrolytic reduction for Cu2+ removal, the important role of magnetic fields

Kecheng Wen,Shijin Zhang,Yanting Zhang,Xinyu Wang,Zhiwei Yang,Guozhong Zheng,Yuan Huang,Jinhui Xu,Jing Zhang

Performance enhancement of Fe-C materials for Cu 2+ removal, removal capacity, and pH range of applicability is achieved through the environmentally friendly, long-lasting magnetic fields in this study. Specifically, the utilization of the magnetic field to the Fe-C materials significantly improves the performance of Cu 2+ removal in contrast to the single Fe-C, which also brings about improvement under various water condition parameters. The concentrations of Cu 2+ , Cu + , Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in solution were monitored, and the relevant properties of Fe-C materials were characterised. Results showed that Cu 2+ was removed by reduction of Fe-C material either in solution or after adsorption onto the surface of the material. Additionally, the magnetic field accelerated the exposure of the active sites present in the material, leading to the acceleration of adsorption of Fe-C to Cu 2+ for reduction and removal, as well as accelerating mass transfer. In addition, the magnetic field facilitated Fe-C materials' active sites and expedited the adsorption of Fe-C onto Cu 2+ for reduction and removal, as well as accelerated mass transport. Furthermore, it was verified that MF maintained a positive reinforcing impact on the Fe-C micro-electrolysis system for eliminating other heavy metal ions, with a particular emphasis on paramagnetic heavy metal ions. This research has expanded our understanding of the mechanism underlying Fe-C/MF micro-electrolysis system, and aided in the application in Fe-C/MF micro-electrolysis system for the remediation of heavy metal ions present in water environment.

Resource utilization of copper slag for microelectrolysis material preparation for phenol degradation

Guihong Han,Baogang Cai,Shuzhen Yang,Xin Ding,Bingbing Liu,Yanfang Huang

Microelectrolysis (ME) is an efficient method for treating organic wastewater. The utilization of copper slag for high-performance microelectrolysis material preparation for pollutant degradation is meaningful for environmental conservation. Herein, a Fe-Cu-C microelectrolysis material (MEM) was prepared by carbothermal reduction with copper slag, copper powder and anthracite as the raw materials for phenol degradation in wastewater. The phase and structural transformations that occur in the reduction process of copper slag during MEM preparation were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and an electroprobe microanalyzer (EPMA). The prepared Fe-Cu-C MEMs were characterized by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The anchored structure of the iron droplets on the SiO 2 bulk surface is beneficial for the microelectrolysis reaction as well as for the stability of the microstructure. The Fe-Cu-C MEM displayed wide pH and temperature application ranges for phenol degradation. Interestingly, 1 O 2 was found to play a critical role in phenol degradation in the ME system. Under the optimal conditions, the phenol degradation efficiency of Fe-Cu-C MEM reached 96.48% after 60 min, with chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon removal rates of 82.65% and 67.34%, respectively. This research provides a feasible method for the production of Fe-Cu-C MEM and the degradation of phenol in wastewater.

Li Shuilian,Zhang Lishan,Zhong Shan,Zhu Jiayan,Wei Zengxian

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal This study reports the preparation of granular ternary micro-electrolysis materials and their effectiveness in removing the emerging contaminant PFOA. Al/nZVI/C@F granules were synthesized using a liquid-phase reduction method combined with high-temperature calcination. By comparing the removal of methylene blue dye by granules, the optimum preparation conditions were determined as follows: Fe:C = 5:1, fly ash = 50%, calcination temperature = 800 °C, and holding time = 1 h. Static batch experiments revealed that under optimal conditions (PFOA concentration = 25 mg/L, solid–liquid ratio = 30 g/L, pH = 3, reaction temperature = 15 °C), Al/nZVI/C@F achieved a PFOA removal rate of 97.83%. The removal efficiency of Al/nZVI/C@F (93.90%) was significantly higher than that of commercial iron-carbon (12.75%). After 45 days of dynamic column experiments, the removal efficiency of nZVI/C@F and Al/nZVI/C@F for PFOA (50 mg/L) remained above 60%, demonstrating strong practical application potential. Further adsorption–desorption experiments revealed that nZVI/C@F and Al/nZVI/C@F primarily removed 50 mg/L PFOA through adsorption. For a lower PFOA concentration of 0.5 mg/L, the defluorination rates were 53.2% for nZVI/C@F and 68.9% for Al/nZVI/C@F. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to analyze the intermediates formed during PFOA removal, leading to a proposed degradation pathway. Developed Al/nZVI/C via liquid-phase reduction and high-temperature calcination. Proven efficacy in PFOA removal from water using fly ash-Al/nZVI/C@F granules. Identified adsorption as the primary mechanism for over 50% PFOA removal. Degradation of PFOA to form short-chain fluorinated intermediates. The materials hold promise for PFOA removal in water treatment applications.

Micro-electrolysis based nitrate reduction from aqueous solution by CNTs-Al-Cu composite under alkaline environment

Zhiyu Wei,Jie Chen,Hongjin Tong,Mingchao Sun,Jing Tian,Lu Fan

CNTs-Al was prepared by ball milling combined with sintering process and then used for CNTs-Al-Cu synthesis with chemical deposition method. The obtained CNTs-Al-Cu composite was systematically characterized and its NO 3 − -N reduction performance under alkaline condition was also evaluated. As indicated by the reduction batch experiment, 80.2% of NO 3 − -N removal efficiency was obtained in 90 min at pH of 9. The product of the reduction process was dominated by NO 2 − -N, which was further reduced to harmless N 2 . The reusability of CNTs-Al-Cu composite was evaluated, and the experiment results showed that 68.1% of NO 3 − -N removal efficiency was maintained after 3 cycles of regeneration. Finally, based on the characterization results and kinetic analysis, it was concluded that micro-electrolysis was mainly responsible for the removal of NO 3 − -N by CNTs-Al-Cu.

Enhanced Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization by Fe0 coupled with biochar through galvanic interaction

Qian Zuo,Bing Li,Zhiyi Deng,Xiangyu Zheng,Ping Li,Jinhua Wu

Zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) is widely packed in filters for Cr(VI) removal, but it suffers from ferrochrome precipitate passivation. In this study, a mixed Fe 0 and biochar (BC) system was established and investigated for promoted Fe 0 corrosion and enhanced Cr(VI) removal through iron‑carbon micro-electrolysis (IC-ME) by batch and column experiments with Fe 0 and BC as controls. Due to electrochemical reaction between Fe 0 and BC, there was an enhancement in iron corrosion and subsequent formation of secondary minerals on Fe 0 surface. These minerals included magnetite, lepidocrocite, and goethite, which facilitated Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction. The Fe 0 -BC system therefore obtained a higher Cr(VI) removal rate of 86.3 % within 6 h than those of the BC (7.9 %) and Fe 0 (12.5 %) systems. Chromium species distribution showed that 76.2 % of removed Cr(VI) was converted to Cr(III). The resultant Cr(III) of 68.4 % was immobilized on Fe 0 and BC surfaces due to precipitation and sequestration. The optimal Fe/BC mass ratio was 2:1 for galvanic reaction and Cr(VI) removal. The removal of Cr(VI) by Fe 0 -BC exhibited a pH-dependency, with acidic conditions favoring higher removal rates. Additionally, the column experiment result revealed that Cr(VI) removal capacity of 4.0 mg Cr(VI)/(g Fe 0 ) and operational lifespan of 1851 PV in the Fe 0 -BC column were 6.7 and 3.9-fold greater than those in the Fe 0 column, further confirming that galvanic reaction could effectively alleviate Fe 0 surface passivation. These results indicated that mixed Fe 0 and BC as an effective medium in filter tanks could form IC-ME to enhance Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization during water treatment.

Enhanced degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene in groundwater by persulfate activated using iron–carbon micro-electrolysis

Zhifei Ma,Yu Yang,Yonghai Jiang,Beidou Xi,Tianxue Yang,Xing Peng,Xinying Lian,Kun Yan,Hongliang Liu

The reactivity of potassium persulfate (PP) in the degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), with when iron and carbon as activators, is investigated. Effects of pH, persulfate concentration, and ionic strength on the degradation efficiency of 2,4-DNT by persulfate are studied in batch experiments, with simulated groundwater environmental conditions of no light, neutral pH and low temperatures (15   °C). The degradation of 2,4-DNT heightens and follows the pseudo-first-order kinetic model in the system comprising Fe/AC and S 2 O 8 2− . Addition of activated carbon (AC) increases the release of Fe 2+ to activate PP. When the concentration of persulfate is 100   mg/L, the 2,4-DNT degradation is the best at an initial pH of 2. The 2,4-DNT removal efficiency increases in the order of pH 2   >   pH 9   >   pH 3   >   pH 5   >   pH 11   >   pH 7 in the Fe/AC   +   PP system. 2,4-DNT degradation in the presence of Cl − is slower in the first 100   min, but there is no obvious difference in degradation efficiency further on. This is most likely due to persulfate activation and Fe/AC reduction in this system. Meanwhile, the presence of bicarbonate ions inhibits the degradation of 2,4-DNT. A possible mechanism is proposed based on the reasons for the degradation of 2,4-DNT in the Fe/AC   +   PP system. Iron–carbon micro-electrolysis promotes micronmeter-sized iron to generate Fe 2+ . This study provides the design for an advanced, refractory organic matter-based oxidation technique for improved groundwater pollution remediation.

Degradation of organic dye wastewater by H2O2-enhanced aluminum carbon micro-electrolysis

Huang Xiaori,Chen Yiqun,Sun Dedong,Ma Hongchao,Wang Guowen,Dong Xiaoli

In this research, the treatment of methylene blue (MB) dye wastewater by a novel system that combines H 2 O 2 with an aluminum-carbon micro-electrolysis (ACE) was explored. The effects of the H 2 O 2 amount, initial pH, aluminum to carbon ratio, total aluminum-carbon mass, dye concentration, and reaction temperature on degradation of MB were investigated. The findings revealed that under the following conditions: H 2 O 2 34.0 mg/L, initial pH of 3.0, aluminum-to-carbon ratio of 2:1, total aluminum-carbon mass of 2.0 g/L, MB concentration of 20 mg/L, and 20 °C, the degradation rate of MB could reach 99.3% after 180 min, which is 18.4% more compared with ACE at the same conditions without H 2 O 2 . Through the quenching experiments, it was proved that the efficient free radicals produced during degradation are •OH and •O 2 - . Finally, a possible mechanism of H 2 O 2 enhanced aluminum carbon micro-electrolysis (HP-ACE) for MB degradation was discussed.

Chemical removal and selectivity reduction of nitrate from water by (nano) zero-valent iron/activated carbon micro-electrolysis

Ningfan Song,Jian Xu,Yunpeng Cao,Fan Xia,Jun Zhai,Hainan Ai,Dezhi Shi,Li Gu,Qiang He

The processes of (n)ZVI/AC((nano)zero valent iron/activated carbon)micro-electrolysis were applied for nitrate removal from groundwater, aiming to reduce nitrate to N 2 , an environmentally friendly end product. (n)ZVI was utilized and combined with selected commercial AC to form the micro-electrolysis. Effect of different operational parameters, including reductant dosage, (n)ZVI/AC ratios, and reaction pH, on nitrate and TN removal were cleared. The results showed that nZVI presents higher reaction activities than ZVI in micro-electrolysis. With the increase of the (n)ZVI/AC mass ration from 1:2 to 2:1, the TN removal increased from 16.8% to 38.9%, then declined with the further increase of the ratio. The nitrate removal was negatively correlated with the initial pH of the solution. Compared to ZVI particles, even with a lower dosage, nZVI presented 100% nitrate removal at acidic and neutral pH conditions, and TN removal could maintain higher than 35% with pH lower than 9.0. A kinetic model was also established to explain the pathways of nitrate removal, and the results indicated that AC not only enriched nitrate as an adsorbent but also present highly potential in catalytic converting nitrate to N 2 . The technique presented great potentials in removing nitrate from water and a promising application prospect.

More effective peroxymonosulfate activation for tetracycline removal from Co-FeN/@BC assisted by micro--electrolysis: Performance and mechanism

Fangke Yu,haoqing li,yueping guo

Preparation of N-doped bimetallic (Co/Fe) MOFs and their loading on biochar (Co-FeN/@BC). Micro-electrolytic co-catalyst activated PMS for the efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC). The mechanism was comprehensively investigated by EPR analysis, free radical quenching experiments and electrochemical measurements. The results showed that micro-electrolysis prompted the catalyst to synergize with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade TC, and the pathways of TC degradation included free radical, non-free radical and high-valent metal pathways. Microelectrolysis accelerates electron transfer, Fe/Co activates PMS to become a high-valent metal after electron transfer, and PMS is activated to produce 1O2 and SO·- 4. The main active substances for TC degradation by PMS activation were 1O2, SO·- 4, FeIVO2+ and CoIVO2+. The active substances attacked the TC molecules to form intermediates, which were eventually mineralized into CO2 and H2O.

Process design of high-concentration benzimidazole wastewater treatment based on the molecular structure of contaminants

Chenru Li,Kun Qian,Qinyao Liu,Qianyi Zhang,Chen Yao,Wei Song,Yihong Wang

Benzimidazole is an important intermediate in industry and it is usually difficult to be degraded by many treatment technologies. Looking for a highly effective, environment-friendly degradation process for benzimidazole wastewater is of great significance to reduce pollution. Based on the structure of contaminants, the micro-electrolysis (ME) coupled with the Fenton technique was chosen to degrade the industrial benzimidazole wastewater. Special feeding was applied to maintain the suitable hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration to produce the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) as much as possible and protect •OH from being quenched by excess H2O2 according to the reaction mechanism. The results showed that this combined technique was highly efficient to decompose benzimidazole compounds. More chemical oxygen demand (COD) could be reduced when flow control was used, compared to the flow not being controlled. The COD removal rate could reach 85.2% at optimal parameters. Then the effluent of this process was combined with the existing biochemical system for further degradation. The studies of Ultraviolet Spectrophotometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry showed that both 2-(a-Hydroxyethyl) benzimidazole and 2-Acetylbenzimidazole were decomposed to the isopropanolamine and aniline after the ME treatment; then the intermediates were oxidized into oxalic acid after the Fenton reaction.
