Quantum Dot Luminescence Microspheres Enable Ultra-Efficient and Bright Micro-LEDs

Ting Gong,Tongtong Xuan,Wenhao Bai,Haorui Dong,Kai Huang,Rong-Jun Xie

Quantum dot (QD)-converted micrometer-scale light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) are regarded as an effective solution for achieving high-performance full-color micro-LED displays because of their narrow-band emission, simplified mass transfer, facile drive circuits, and low cost. However, these micro-LEDs suffer from significant blue light leakage and unsatisfactory electroluminescence properties due to the poor light conversion efficiency and stability of the QDs. Herein, the construction of green and red QD luminescence microspheres with the simultaneously high conversion efficiency of blue light and strong photoluminescence stability are proposed. These luminescence microspheres exhibit high external photoluminescence quantum yields exceeding 46% under 450 nm excitation, along with excellent reliability against blue light, heat, and water-oxygen degradation, owing to the waveguide and spatial confinement effects of the microspheres. The microsphere-based green and red micro-LEDs achieve world-record external quantum efficiencies of 40.8% and 22.1%, respectively, and high brightness values of 1.7 × 10 8 and 7.6 × 10 7 cd m −2 , respectively. Finally, 0.6 inch red, green, and blue monochrome micro-LED displays are demonstrated by integrating microsphere-converted micro-LED arrays with thin-film transistor backplanes, which show a pixel resolution as high as 1700 PPI and brightness exceeding 10 000 cd m −2 .

Atomic-scale passivation strategy for stabilizing tricolor perovskite quantum dots with enhanced photoluminescence

Yilei Zhang,Di Wen,Min Wang,Tianwei Zhang,Kun Cao,Rong Chen

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are promising light-emitting materials for next-generation displays. Nevertheless, their practical applications are hindered by poor stability. In this study, we present a mild atomic layer deposition (ALD) method using dimethylaluminum isopropoxide (DMAI) precursor at a lower temperature (50 °C) to enable simultaneous stabilization of the RGB QDs while enhancing their photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The DMAI precursors react with the –COOH groups of oleic acid, passivating surface defects by forming Al–O bonds between the ligands and perovskite QDs, thereby improving optical performance. This is followed by the formation of a nanoscale AlOx thin film coating that protects the octahedral structure of the ODs. The passivated perovskite RGB QDs exhibit significantly enhanced PL intensity and prolonged fluorescence lifetime, retaining over 80% of their PL after exposure to water, intense light, and temperatures up to 150 °C. Furthermore, when used in tri-color micro-LEDs, the modified RGB perovskite QDs demonstrates 8 times longer operational stability compared to the original QDs. White LEDs have been also fabricated, exhibiting narrow spectra and stable PL intensity. These results highlight the potential of the mild ALD method with DMAI precursor in enhancing the stability and efficiency of optoelectronic devices under manufacturing and operating conditions.

Electrohydrodynamic Inkjet Printing of Three-Dimensional Perovskite Nanocrystal Arrays for Full-Color Micro-LED Displays

Yihang Chen,Xiao Yang,Xiaotong Fan,Ao Kang,Xuemin Kong,Guolong Chen,Chenming Zhong,Yijun Lu,Yi Fan,Xu Hou,Tingzhu Wu,Zhong Chen,Shuli Wang,Yue Lin

Perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC) arrays are showing a promising future in the next generation of micro-light-emitting-diode (micro-LED) displays due to the narrow emission linewidth and adjustable peak wavelength. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet printing, with merits of high resolution, uniformity, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, is among the competent candidates for constructing PeNC arrays. However, the fabrication of red light-emitting CsPbBrxI(3–x) nanocrystal arrays for micro-LED displays still faces challenges, such as low brightness and poor stability. This work proposes a design for a red PeNC colloidal ink that is specialized for the EHD inkjet printing of three-dimensional PeNC arrays with enhanced luminescence and stability as well as being adaptable to both rigid and flexible substrates. Made of a mixture of PeNCs, polymer polystyrene (PS), and a nonpolar xylene solvent, the PeNC colloidal ink enables precise control of array sizes and shapes, which facilitates on-demand micropillar construction. Additionally, the inclusion of PS significantly increases the brightness and environmental stability. By adopting this ink, the EHD printer successfully fabricated full-color 3D PeNC arrays with a spatial resolution over 2500 ppi. It shows the potential of the EHD inkjet printing strategy for high-resolution and robust PeNC color conversion layers for micro-LED displays.
