All-Cellulose Bioplastics from Waste Wood Particles

Jing Zhou,Muqiu You,Jinhao Xu,Yongcan Jin,Dagang Li,Zhaoyang Xu,Chuchu Chen

The concerning accumulation of nonbiodegradable plastic films in the environment and the associated risks have prompted a vigorous quest for biobased degradable substitutes. However, creating biomass-based plastics with a combination of high mechanical strength, water resistance, and rapid degradation in a natural environment presents a great challenge. Herein, we report a facile method to develop high-performance all-cellulose bioplastics from waste wood particles by low-energy microfibrillation and simple oxidation. The resulting oxidized all-cellulose microfiber films (OCMFs) containing a densely packed microscale fiber network structure simultaneously achieve high light transmittance (≈85.1%), low haze (≈6%), and notably high wet strength (≈32.34 MPa), superior to those of typical cellulose nanofiber films with inherent high hydrophilicity. Moreover, the thickness of OCMF can be easily regulated via a self-adhesive lamination approach, overcoming the limited film thickness formed by vacuum filtration. Coupled with low-valuable waste raw materials, all-cellulose components, low-energy microscale fabrication, and high optical clarity and water resistance, the proposed OCMF proves its bright future as ecofriendly alternative bioplastics in sustainable materials.

Hydrophobic cellulose films with excellent strength and toughness via ball milling activated acylation of microfibrillated cellulose

Sha Deng,Rui Huang,Mi Zhou,Feng Chen,Qiang Fu

Cellulose films with excellent mechanical strength are of interest to many researchers, but unfortunately they often lack the ductility and water resistance. This work demonstrates an efficient and easily industrialized method for hydrophobic cellulose films made of modified microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). Prior to film fabrication, the simultaneous exfoliation and acylation of MFC was achieved through the synergetic effect of mechanical and chemical actions generated from ball milling in the presence of hexanoyl chloride. Largely enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break have been achieved (4.98   MPa, 4.37% for original MFC films, 140   MPa, 21.3% for modified ones). Due to hydrophobicity and compact structure, modified films show excellent water resistance and decreased water vapor permeability. Moreover, optical performance of modified films is also improved compared with the original MFC films. Our work can largely expand the application of this biodegradable resource and ultimately reduce the need for petroleum-based plastics.

One-pot preparation of micro-fibrillated cellulose fiber (MCF) through the synergistic action of g-C3N4 and a diluted acid

Zhenyu Zhang,Anran Li,Haining Na,Fei Liu,Jin Zhu

Fibrillated cellulose with outstanding mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability and a high specific surface area has attracted widespread attention from researchers. Mechanical fibrillation is the most common preparation method, but a complex pretreatment and high energy consumption are inevitably required. In this study, amino-enriched g-C3N4 as both a relatively weak hydrogen bond donor and a solid base was used in MCF preparation. Almost all kinds of cellulose (without pretreatment) can be directly converted into MCF with a diameter of 200–300 nm with the synergistic action of g-C3N4 and acid (0.02 mol L−1 H2SO4) in 10 min under microwave irradiation. The length of the micro-fibrillated cellulose fiber (MCF) is consistent with the size of the cellulose crystalline region in raw materials. Furthermore, the obtained MCF successfully achieved real-time adsorption of a disperse blue dye and the residue contains a large amount of g-C3N4, which can be used for efficient photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. This research, into breaking the hydrogen bonds between fibril bundles by solid–solid interactions rather than mechanical fibrillation, provides a new strategy for MCF preparation.

Thiol-assisted bioinspired deposition of polyurethane onto cellulose as robust elastomer for reinforcing soy protein-based composites

Qian Yan,Shujun Zhao,Haijiao Kang,Shifeng Zhang

The development of natural fiber-reinforced composites is environmentally friendly and therefore presents great potential; however, these composites are characterized by poor water resistance and interfacial bonding, which therefore limits its practical applications. This study reported a facile and novel approach for the construction of a high-performance microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) elastomer using thiol-functionalized polyurethane (PU-SH) with the assistance of a bioinspired dopamine platform. This elastomer was then employed as a reactive reinforcer to improve soy protein isolated (SPI) adhesive. The surface modification of MFC included the formation of a polydopamine (PDA) layer and Michael addition reactions between PU-SH and PDA, which were characterized by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. It was found that the high-functional MFC elastomer served as a reactive cross-linker that gave rise to multiple physical and chemical interactions with the SPI matrix. This resulted in the optimization of the crosslinking system, which ultimately contributed to the solution of the bottleneck issues for natural fiber-reinforced composites. Consequently, the modified SPI-based adhesives notably enhanced the shear strength to 1.38 MPa, displaying a 236.6% increment compared to the unmodified adhesive. This strategy may provide a new insight into the design and preparation of superior natural plant-reinforced composites.

An ultralight, elastic, cost-effective, and highly recyclable superabsorbent from microfibrillated cellulose fibers for oil spillage cleanup

Sha Wang,Xinwen Peng,Linxin Zhong,Jiewen Tan,Shuangshuang Jing,Xuefei Cao,Wei Chen,Chuanfu Liu,Runcang Sun

The fabrication of superabsorbents for oil spillage cleanup is a hot topic today. However, the development of a low cost and highly efficient superabsorbent is still a big challenge. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple method to produce a low-cost, ultralight, elastic, and highly recyclable superabsorbent from renewable cellulose fibers via simple and environmentally friendly microfibrillation treatment and freeze-drying. Since microfibrillation of cellulose fibers resulted in hierarchical fibers that possess both fiber bulk and considerable microfibrils on the fiber surface, hierarchically porous sponges with ultralow density (0.0024 g cm−3) and high porosity (up to 99.84%) were obtained after freeze drying. The porous sponges after hydrophobic modification were elastic and exhibited rapid and outstanding absorption performances for various oils and organic solvents. The hydrophobic superabsorbent could selectively absorb oil from an oil–water mixture and showed an ultra-high absorption capacity of 88–228 g g−1, which is comparable to those of other novel carbon-based superabsorbents. More importantly, the superabsorbent showed excellent flexibility and elasticity, and could be repeatedly squeezed without structure failure (more than 30 times). The absorbed oil could be readily and rapidly recovered by means of simple mechanical squeezing, while the superabsorbent could be reused at once without any other treatment. The superabsorbent showed excellent recyclability and could be reused for at least 30 cycles while still maintaining high oil absorption capacity (137 g g−1 for pump oil). These advantages make the superabsorbent an ideal alternative for oil spillage cleaning.

Microfibrillated cellulose enhancement to mechanical and conductive properties of biocompatible hydrogels

Fengcai Lin,Ruting Zheng,Jianwen Chen,Wenmin Su,Biying Dong,Chensheng Lin,Biao Huang,Beili Lu

A combination of conductive polymer with natural biomass is an ideal alternative to the classical conductive materials. In this study, PPy/SA/TOMFC composite hydrogels were fabricated by incorporation of TEMPO-oxidized microfibrillated cellulose (TOMFC) into the alginate-based matrix along with the in situ polymerization of pyrrole monomer. It was found that the mechanical and conductive properties of the composite hydrogels were associated with the concentration of TOMFC, which facilitated the formation of more compact 3D network structures and the growing of PPy conductive network. The mechanical properties of the synthesized hydrogels were significantly enhanced by incorporation of higher amount of TOMFC. In addition, with the introduction of 5.0 wt% TOMFC, the electrical conductivity of composite hydrogels could be ten times higher than that of PPy/SA hydrogels. Moreover, the obtained PPy/SA/TOMFC hydrogels exhibited tunable swelling properties and good biocompatibility, making them promising candidates for the use as biomaterial.

Markedly improved hydrophobicity of cellulose film via a simple one-step aminosilane-assisted ball milling

Mengfan Jing,Lijie Zhang,Zhengbing Fan,Xuyang Liu,Yaming Wang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Most cellulose products lack water resistance due to the existence of abundant hydroxyl groups . In this work, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was modified via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-assisted ball milling . Under the synergism between high-energy mechanical force field and APTES-modification, the fibrillation and hydrophobization of MFC were achieved simultaneously. Free-standing translucent cellulose films made of modified MFC were fabricated. The original crystal form of cellulose is maintained. The hydrophobicity of cellulose film markedly increases and the water contact angle goes up to 133.2 ± 3.4°, which might be ascribed to the combined effects of APTES-modification and rough film surface. In addition, the thermostability and mechanical properties of cellulose film are also improved via mechanochemical modification. This work provides a novel one-step fibrillation-hydrophobization method for cellulose.

High-strength and super-hydrophobic multilayered paper based on nano-silica coating and micro-fibrillated cellulose

Haoying Chen,Bin Wang,Jinpeng Li,Guangdong Ying,Kefu Chen

Herein, a facile strategy was proposed for preparing a high-strength and super-hydrophobic packaging paper with improved moisture and air barrier properties, which was derived from cellulosic pulps, micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC), and nano-silica (n-SiO 2 ). Owning to the laminated process followed by spraying approach, MFC and n-SiO 2 were assembled onto two surfaces of the cellulose paper base, respectively, endowing the mechanical behaviors and superhydrophobic performance of this biodegradable composite papers as packaging material. The as-obtained multilayered papers demonstrated impressive dry tensile strength and remarkable wet tensile strength of 6542.5 N/m and 5875 N/m, which were increased by 56% and 2277%, respectively. In addition, the multilayered paper with rational mechanical properties possessed low permeabilities of air (3.17 × 10 −3  μm·Pa −1 ·s −1 ), oxygen (9.687 cm 3 ·m −2 ·day −1 ·atm), and water vapor (378.24 g·m −2 ·day −1 ), respectively, as well as a superhydrophobic performance with the contact angle of ~151.2°. Overall, the feasibility of large-scale production of biodegradable packaging materials in the paper-making industry is demonstrated by the fact that the micro/nanostructures and hydrophobic surfaces could be directly constructed on cellulosic paperboard .

In-situ synthesis and immobilization of silver nanoparticles on microfibrillated cellulose for long-term antibacterial applications

Ma Zhengxin,Liu Jie,Shen Guixian,Zheng Xuejing,Pei Ying,Tang Keyong

Abstract Synthesis of nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has drawn growing interest owing to their antimicrobial activity and tuneable physicochemical properties. In this study, we report the surface modification of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) with bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) followed by in-situ growth and immobilization of AgNPs. The resultant AgNPs-PDA-MFC nanocomposites were characterized by UV–Vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that crystalline face-centered cubic AgNPs with a mean diameter of 19.1 nm were randomly and firmly immobilized on MFC. The attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared analysis results confirmed the formation of AgNPs, and the content of silver in AgNPs-PDA-MFC was determined by thermogravimetry. The aqueous suspension of AgNPs-PDA-MFC was stable during 30 days of storage. Antibacterial activity of the AgNPs-PDA-MFC nanocomposites was evaluated with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Importantly, AgNPs-PDA-MFC exhibited excellent long-term antibacterial activity. This was ascribed to the extremely slow but sustained release of silver from the AgNPs-PDA-MFC (0.56% in 14 days). Furthermore, the application of AgNPs-PDA-MFC as coating and filling agents was preliminarily evaluated. This study suggests that the AgNPs-PDA-MFC nanocomposites with long-term antibacterial performance provide a promising solution for fighting against pathogenic bacteria. Graphic abstract

Highly compressible and hydrophobic aerogel from microfibrillated cellulose for efficient oil/water separation

Xiangjian Yang,Derong Tang,Lexiang Wang,Junming Wang,Chunjie Ye,Yaoting Liang,Ya Li,Yanjun Tang

Microfibrillated cellulose aerogel (MFCA) has gained increasing attention due to its eco-friendliness, low-cost production, and tunable surface chemistry. However, the utilization of MFCA in treating oil pollution is limited by poor selectivity in oil/water separation, weak mechanical properties and suboptimal adsorption capacities. In the present work, a highly compressible and hydrophobic aerogel was developed from microfibrillated cellulose via a combined silane acid hydrolysis and freeze-drying process. The influence of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) incorporation on the structure, hydrophobicity, oil-water separation and mechanical properties of MFCA was systematically explored. The successfully prepared aerogel displayed a disordered lamellar matrix with enhanced pore uniformity. Increasing the MTMS dosage from 10 mmol/g (MFC) to 50 mmol/g (MFC) led to a significant enhancement in the water contact angle, from 121.12° to 133.50°, while it resulted in a decrease in adsorption capacity from 94.68 g/g to 51.91 g/g. Notably, at an optimal MTMS dosage of 30 mmol/g, the modified aerogel simultaneously exhibited exceptional hydrophobicity and high lipophilicity, with an adsorption capacity of 94.68 g/g for n-heptane. Furthermore, the compression recovery properties of the MFCA were investigated. The results showed that as the MTMS concentration increased from 10 mmol/g (MFC) to 50 mmol/g (MFC) , the adsorption capacity recovery performance of the modified MFCA increased from 20.04 % to 37.60 % after 30 cycles. More importantly, it retained 54.53 % of its initial capacity after 30 cycles of reuse. This work highlights the potential of aerogel in oil/water separation, offering a scalable and eco-friendly solution to address environmental challenges.

Extraction and Characterization of Microfibrillated Cellulose from Discarded Cotton Fibers through Catalyst Preloaded Fenton Oxidation

Xianmeng Xu,Ning Lu,Shunmin Wang,Mengqi Huang,Shenglong Qu,Feng Xuan

With rapid developments in science and technology, mankind is faced with the dual severe challenges of obtaining needed resources and protecting the environment. The need for sustainable development strategies has become a global consensus. As the most abundant biological resource on Earth, cellulose is an inexhaustible, natural, and renewable polymer. Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) offers the advantages of abundant raw materials, high strength, and good degradability. Simultaneously, MFC prepared from natural materials has high practical significance due to its potential application in nanocomposites. In this study, we reported the preparation of MFCs from discarded cotton with short fibers by a combination of Fe2+ catalyst-preloading Fenton oxidation and a high-pressure homogenization cycle method. Lignin was removed from the discarded cotton with an acetic acid and sodium chlorite mixed solution. Then, the cotton was treated with NaOH solution to obtain cotton cellulose and oxidized using Fenton oxidation to obtain Fenton-oxidized cotton cellulose. The carboxylic acid content of the oxidized cotton cellulose was 126.87 μmol/g, and the zeta potential was −43.42 mV. Then, the Fenton-oxidized cotton cellulose was treated in a high-speed blender under a high-pressure homogenization cycle to obtain the MFC with a yield of 91.58%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that cotton cellulose was effectively oxidized by Fe2+ catalyst-preloading Fenton oxidation. The diameter of the MFC ranged from several nanometers to a few micrometers as determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the crystallinity index (CrI) of the MFC was 83.52% according to X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the thermal stability of the MFC was slightly reduced compared to cotton cellulose, as seen through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The use of catalyst-preloading Fenton oxidation technology, based on the principles of microreactors, along with high-pressure homogenization, was a promising technique to prepare MFCs from discarded cotton.

All-Tunicate Cellulose Film with Good Light Management Properties for High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Chen Jiang,Meiyan Wu,Fang Zhang,Chao Liu,Mingliang Sun,Bin Li

Tunicate nanocellulose with its unique properties, such as excellent mechanical strength, high crystallinity, and good biodegradability, has potential to be used for the preparation of light management film with tunable transmittance and haze. Herein, we prepared a whole tunicate cellulose film with tunable haze levels, by mixing tunicate microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and tunicate cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Then, the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with updated light management was used to modify the organic solar cell (OSC) substrate, aiming to improve the light utilization efficiency of OSC. Results showed that the dosage of MFC based on the weight of CNF was an important factor to adjust the haze and light transmittance of the prepared cellulose film. When the dosage of MFC was 3 wt.%, the haze of the obtained film increased 74.2% compared to the pure CNF film (39.2%). Moreover, the optimized tunicate cellulose film exhibited excellent mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength of 168 MPa, toughness of 5.7 MJ/m3) and high thermal stability, which will be beneficial to the workability and durability of OSC. More interestingly, we applied the obtained whole tunicate cellulose film with a high haze (68.3%) and high light transmittance (85.0%) as an additional layer to be adhered to the glass substrate of OSC, and a notable improvement (6.5%) of the power conversion efficiency was achieved. With the use of biodegradable tunicate cellulose, this work provides a simple strategy to enhance light management of the transparent substrate of OSC for improving power conversion efficiency. Keywords:cellulose composite films;cellulose nanofibrils;micro-fibrillated cellulose;tunicate;organic solar cells
