Low-temperature differential evaporation constitutes a promising direction for energy-saving desalination. Herein, a novel Janus interfacial structure with well-ordered micro/nanopores is developed. Fabricated Janus interfacial structure can weak the water intermolecular forces and pump water to the hydrophilic–hydrophobic junction. Within well-ordered nanochannels, the increased curvature of the meniscus increases the ratio of thin water layers, thereby enhancing microscale heat transfer at the heated walls; in addition, the smaller nanopores limit the development of microscale vortices at the liquid–gas interface and prevent back mixing of intermediate water at the interface, which possess the nanoscale effect on intensifying the interfacial evaporation. These effects are validated by theoretical and experimental studies. Optimized Janus (20 nm) 95°/25° structure exhibits evaporation fluxes up to 2.4 kg m −2 h −1 at 45 °C (feed side)/25 °C (permeate side, ambient pressure), as the theoretical evaporation enthalpy is only 30% of that for direct evaporation. The unique Janus structure simultaneously inhibits salt accumulation and achieve self-cleaning, thereby maintaining steady performance during 480 h of continuous desalination and 50 cycles of batch operation. This work highlights a promising structural design strategy for separation materials with specific micro/nanoscopic topologies to achieve high performance thermally driven desalination applications.

In this work, a simple anti-fingerprint strategy (reduced ≈40–60%) to rearrange fingerprint droplets by patterned micro/nano-pore/spoons texture, air cushion and low surface energy is reported. Superior to previous precise and complex preparation methods, the micro/nano-texture are fabricated through conventional process of spray and dip. The pore and spoon can be freely switched by changing the process. The number (N) and size (r) of pores and spoons are controlled intelligently by solvent volatilization and interfacial tension ( γ FP/PU − H 2 O ${{\bm{\gamma }}_{{\rm{FP/PU}}{\bm{ - }}{{\rm{H}}_2}{\rm{O}}}}$ and γ FP/PU − Solvent ), the key for pore/spoon's forming and expanding. A physical model of interface intelligent controlling the micro/nano-pore/spoon surface texture induced by “Vacancy-Capture” is proposed. The description is being reported, for the first time, to the knowledge, expecting to make it possible to prepare anti-fingerprint engineering materials with newly potential industrial applications on optical device for large-scale in the future.

Due to high thermal conductivity and excellent design flexibility, selective laser melting (SLM) metal substrate structured catalysts are widely used to enhance heat transfer in highly exothermic and endothermic reactions. However, the systematic investigation of porosity effects in SLM-processed substrates on active component distribution and catalytic performance has not been conducted. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study of structured catalysts using dense rolling FeCrAl and porous SLM AlSiMg substrates. SLM AlSiMg substrate displayed abundant micro-nano-scale pores after corrosion, and its pore area was 196 times larger than FeCrAl. The porous AlSiMg substrate modified the Co distribution and improved the dispersion in the coating, exhibiting a smaller particle size (15 nm) compared to FeCrAl (21 nm). Moreover, a fraction of Co was loaded on the porous substrate and exhibited catalytic activity, showing 20 % CO conversion and 96 % C 5+ selectivity at 230 °C and 4000 h −1 . Consequently, the optimal Co-loading of the AlSiMg substrate catalyst was higher than the FeCrAl substrate, which increased the maximum C 5+ yield by 126 %. These results confirm that porous metal substrates effectively improve catalyst activity, facilitating the application of SLM technology in catalyst development.

Oil pollution has always been an important issue affecting the ecological and residential environment, and the development of a highly efficient oil/water separation membrane has become a hot topic. In this paper, Janus polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membranes (PNM) were prepared by co-blending hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped with PAN (PNM-SiO2 and PNM-CNT, respectively) and then using sequential multilayer electrospinning. The existence of electrostatic mutual gravitational force between SiO2 and CNTs makes the binding between the multilayer membranes exist more firmly, which is conducive to withstand the osmotic pressure brought by the liquid. In addition, Janus PAN membranes have different wetting properties; they have a micro/nanopore structure that forms a permeable channel for liquids, thus enabling efficient separation of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions, which separates oil/water emulsions with flux as high as 2188 L m–2 h–1 and separation efficiency as high as 99.8%. This experiment further develops the application of Janus membranes in oil/water separation.
